We had the pleasure of dining here a few weekends ago while we were staying in Half Moon Bay. They do not take reservations here so we made sure to arrive early. Once we were seated we were immediately informed that the paella will take about 30 minutes to prepare, and we should outset that first so they get that started. We decided to try the tiger shrimp paella. While we waited we were brought their house bread with two different dipping oils. The inside was very nice and spacious. We were the first guest for the evening so we got to choose where we sat. The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. Our paella was delicious. We absolutely loved it. Our owner issue was the price they charged for the amount we got. Each order is to serve two people. The amount of food was not very much. It looks deceiving because it arrives in a large round paella dish but it is really shallow. We were still hungry after we finished it. A friend took me here for a meal and it was a great pick. I ordered the seafood paella and added chorizo. It came loaded with mussels, shrimp, and squid, all cooked nicely and not overdone. The rice had a good texture, not mushy, and was seasoned well with a bit of smokiness and saffron coming through. I'm writing this review specifically about the paella. After reading numerous positive reviews, I had high expectations--but unfortunately, the dish fell short. Traditional paella should have a crispy, caramelized layer at the bottom (socarrat), but what I received resembled more of a risotto in texture. Additionally, the seafood was overcooked and rubbery, likely due to being cooked for the entire duration rather than added toward the end, as it should be. Some mussels had broken shells, which is concerning from a food safety standpoint. For the price and reputation, this was a major letdown. I've been to Half Moon Bay more than a few times but this was my first time here so being the adventurous guy I am and using Yelp it was time to give it a try. On the coast I believe that seafood is the ticket to a cultural experience and this restaurant filled the bill. I love spicy and combination of local seafood and Spanish flare seemed appropriate, to start was some French fries which had a splendid snap to them really top notch the Lobster bisque actually had a split lobster tail in it adding texture to a very smooth blend, the main course did not disappoint me and I'm sure any seafood lover would agree, clams (two kinds) mussels, calamari, shrimp and scallops on a bed of seasoned rice. The service was very professional and projected small town charm that was appreciated, for me I like restaurants that are friendly and people minded as opposed to so formal you can't blink kinda of thing (smirking) the decor was elegant but simple and very I'm sure a late evening here would be intimate especially if a musician was play the baby grand piano that's next to the bar (yes a baby grand piano) All and all a fabulous dining experience for me. read more

We went to Half Moon bay for sunset but it was extremely foggy, so instead we just went straight to dinner. Found this place nearby and it seemed be available. Lots of great reviews as well. So, we decided to give it a try. Let's start with drinks. We went with a glass of Albarino (white wine, $15.95 a glass) and a glass of Pinot Noir ($25.95 a glass). Frankly, Pinot Noir was decent, but not worth that price tag. Albarino tasted like fruit juice and definitely not worth the price tag, not even at a 1 michelin restaurant. I guess this was all the "location" tax haha. Food wise, we ordered crab cakes, scallops, and fish and chips. Crab cakes were ok, pretty heavy in ginger! Scallop was well cooked, and the cauliflower with it was nice. Fish and chips - fish's batter was not as you would think fully coating the fish.. it was all open and broken, although pretty crispy, so that was ok. Fish was alright. Service was good as we were the only guests in the restaurant. And, our server came like 6 times to ask how's everything.. lol.. he was enthusiastic but that seemed a bit much! read more

I enjoyed a delightful lunch of seared scallops. They were paired with delicately sliced cauliflower, pine nuts & currants or raisins. The gentleman server was extremely gracious and attentive. I ate at Evangeline Cuisine for the first time. I had been interested and excited to try the gluten free fish and chips. I was one of two people eating at the restaurant late afternoon. The restaurant seems like its trying hard to be "fancy" which feels like too much. I want to provide feedback to not call customers "m'lady" its gendered and weird...and felt a little over the top. In terms of the food, I was impressed with the cook of the fish. However, it wasn't super crispy and the fish really needed seasoning. Please add salt before frying and perhaps add seasoning to the batter? I had to ask for some hot sauce to add a bit more flavor. The fries were super tasty and crispy! I think the price for this dish is a bit bloated, $25 for fish and chips is a lot. I won't come back again for this but glad I tried it. read more

We came here on the first night of our baby moon to enjoy some paella because we wanted to try a change of scenery to our usual food choices. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. WHAT WE ORDERED: - Lobster Bisque - creamy soup with 2 halved lobster tails ($38) - Mixed Paella - Spanish rice topped with clams, mussels, squid, shrimp, and chorizo, topped off with an aioli ($50) Both orders were perfect to split between 2 people. We wished the lobster bisque didn't end. It was the perfect combination of tang from the tomato base and creaminess from the cream. The bisque had great spice and flavor, which kept us guessing which spices were used. The lobster tails were not over cooked and the bisque is served with sliced bread which helped clean the bowl. The rice in the paella was perfectly Al dente - not too mushy and not undercooked. The squid and shrimp were big bites and moist, but the clams and mussels were over cooked. I think they were baked too long with the rice so they shriveled up in the oven. It would have been nice to have those plump like the quid and shrimp. We also wish there was more aioli because we are saucy folks like that, but overall, this dish was still great. Arjash is one of the owners of the restaurant and he provided excellent customer service. He was attentive from start to finish and even make small talk with us which was really welcoming since we were visiting from out of town. Him and his wife have a great story on how they opened up their restaurant, which makes us want to support them even more. We came on a Wednesday night and it was not busy but we can imagine how busy this place can get on the weekends! When researching places to eat, this was probably the only place that serves paella in the area so if you are looking for something different, this is the place to be! read more

Everything went well! We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday and Evangeline did not disappoint. First, the service was excellent. My son is allergic to tree based nuts and the server triple checked the ingredients to make sure it's safe. We had a party of 6. We ordered the Patatas Bravas, Gambas Al Ajillo, Caramelized Scallops and Llobster Tail Paella, along with various deserts (pretty much all of them). I've been on a quest for the best Paella that I can find. During a weekend trip to our favorite hotel in Half Moon Bay a Yelp search brought us to Evangeline Cuisine. My wife and I arrived at 2PM and were the only customers in the restaurant. Our waiter, Adolfo was personable and helpful. We ordered the Lobster Bisque as a starter and the Seafood Paella for our main course. The Lobster Bisque consisted of a split lobster tail in a richly flavored creamy broth. It was so delicious that it set the standards high for our expectations of the Paella. We were not disappointed. The Paella was constructed with perfectly seasoned Bomba rice, soft shelled crab, squid, baby octopus, scallops and prawns. I've had good Paella but Evangeline's set a new standard of excellence for us. The only thing I felt was lacking was the crispy layer of soccorat at the bottom of the pan. Adolfo mentioned we could request that element should we visit again. Knowing that we will visit them again before we return home. Read the revews and most were a pretty good sing that the food was going to be great tasting and satisfying. Got in the car and enjoyed the ride there and then took the scenic drive home along the coast. The place was small and intimate with indoor and outdoor seating. Decor was simple with a piano in the dinning area. I wonder what days they have live music, or is it just for show? I should have asked, lol. The young boy taking our order was welcoming, polite and took care of us. Ordered the seafood paella and it did not disappoint . It was our first time having paella and we really enjoyed it. The portion was a good size for 2 people to enjoy. The rice was fluffy and and the seafood was cooked to perfection. This dish was flavorful and satisfying. Will definatley return for the paella because it was that good. Just keep in mind it takes about 30 minutes to prepare, so be patient, its worth th wait. The owner was vrey friendly and we talked about family and food. She talked about how her food is prepared , why it takes a bit to be ready, and I knew the food was freshly made evrytime its ordered. We happened to stumble across this restaurant during our little excursion to HMB. This is the definition of a restaurant that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The food quality is very good. My only knock is the limited menu and the lack of any salads on the menu. I ordered the Fish & Chips and really enjoyed it. The fish was succulent, not dry at all and the batter was perfect. The fries are really, really good here too! Service was attentive & responsive. The team was very friendly as well. The restaurant space is bright, but that's more due to the pink walls and decor. We stopped by this restaurant mid-afternoon on a Friday, and my wife and sister were the only diners at such an odd hour. We came for the seafood paella after seeing the reviews on Yelp. We also ordered an appetizer sampler that consists of slices of cheese, Spanish ham, and bread. Both were delicious and serving portions were just right. I also tried a Spanish handcrafted beer which was very good. Our young server seemed new but he did very well, was attentive to our needs, and did his best to describe the items in their menu. Let me break down what we had and how it all faired Mixed paella - some shrimp sone clams some mussels, scallops and few other items on a whole the dish can feed two, if your looking at portion and add 3 plates maybe this is enough, for me it was not enough rice. Flavor wise it was good, well made next time I will have to comeback and try the seafood paella or lobster paella Gambas - scramp in a light oil seasoned well to be served on a small slice of bread no sauce just the buttery oil the shrimp was cooked in, good flavor for an appetizer Fish and chips - fish slice was fairly large, the cut is two large for my taste, maybe half the size would have been perfect, dense, not flaky season well but again to large of a piece, fries are thin and seasoned well Carmelized scallops - just 3 pieces seasoned well and prepped well with side serving of what tasted like home fries, I would have appreciated more scallops, on a whole dish it was savory in taste but minimal on portion If your coming here on a date, possibly with a person you don"t really know this would be a good spot to try out, if your trying to get full lol this is not the place to visit, portions are small and paella does take awhile to make I get it, 30min out is allot to ask for if you got hungry kids again dates spot yes with kids you will have to pass, unless they are patient lol Again definitely a date a spot to eat just enough not to pig out. We came on a Friday evening and it wasn't too busy. We had to sit outdoors 'cause we brought our dog with us. They don't provide any shade/coverings outdoors so it was insanely hot! We got the Seafood Paella and Gambas Al Ajillo. Since the Paella takes about 35 minutes to be served, we decided to get something small while we waited. The Gambas Al Ajillo was a bit of a disappointment, it was just marinated shrimp with bread. For $15, it wasn't worth it. However, the paella was super delicious! Best paella I've ever had so far! Very flavorful and more than enough servings for the 2 of us. The French fries were good too, we ask for aoli sauce on the side and Ajash granted, even tho it wasn't on the menu to add the aoli sauce. Fries were kiiiiiinda greasy for my liking but my partner and I enjoyed it. Sad they weren't serving sushi at the time. We understood the establishment have to accomodate to the demand of the customers. He very kindly explained why they weren't serving it at the time. We had flan as well for desserts, I personally like my flan more firm which is what they served. So 10/10 on the flan. read more

This small restaurant on Hwy 1 in Half Moon Bay serves some of the best scallops and paella I've ever had. We ordered the caramelized scallops, which were cooked on top of a unique mixture of cauliflower, pine nuts, and golden raisins in a light white sauce. Excellently cooked scallops, full if flavor. I came here on a Friday night and had a very mixed experience. The food was fantastic and while the service was good (waters refilled quickly) it was a bit over the top and made me feel very uncomfortable... The server working asked a lot of in depth questions about where I was from, how I came here, which freeway/direction, and just a lot of details. And would not leave the table. He kept forcing more questions, to the point where he was stopping and closing his eyes and trying to think of more things to ask. Just very forced and uncomfortable. And finally the last thing that made me even more uncomfortable were his indirect relentless questions about my age. He asked if I was in college or just graduated. I said it had been a while and he asked again, how long? How many years? And then I said again, "a while" and I'm pretty uncomfortable at this point. He asked again, what year? And again I said, it's been a while. At this point I don't want to say anything personal about myself or give any details. When asked why, he said I looked very young. The whole experience made me extremely uncomfortable and unsettled and was just a very bizarre situation. We tried making lunch reservations for Valentine's Day but we were told they do not take reservations. That's fine because not all restaurants take reservations. However, when we showed up at 11:00 AM this morning, we were turned away at the door and told they open at 11:30 AM. Their website states "Monday: 11:00 am to 8:00 pm" and their Yelp page states "Mon 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM." It was a disappointing experience because their menu does look tasty. read more

I was served by every member of the family that owns the restaurant at one point or another, and they were all just CRAZY sweet. It's like hospitality runs in their DNA. Their son is a server as well, and I didn't realize he was as young as he is because of his great engagement skills. This family really stole my heart with their kindness. The outdoor seating added to the experience on the sunny day I was there. Gambas ai ajillo: didn't know I'd ever love the flavor of just oil alone so much until I had this dish.
