In some ways, I'm a particularly great Hall Madden/made-to-measure customer: I don't fit super well into standard off-the-rack sizes (long arms, broad chest and shoulders, preference for a high armhole, etc), but I'm sufficiently close to the company's made-to-measure block pattern that the adjustments remain relatively straightforward. If you fall into that camp (and the majority of us will), give them a shot. I've used several MTM tailors over the years, and Hall Madden has clearly been the best among them. Andrew at the SF store capably guided me through fabric selections, styling choices, and measurements. He talked me out of one bad choice, and talked me into one good choice -- imho, that's exactly what you want from a tailoring shop. He then delivered a very well-made and well-fitting sport coat that didn't need any further alternations (which Hall Madden would have made, if necessary). Very happy with the result; and I'll return for more. We stopped in to talk about potentially ordering a custom tux for my partner. The lead staff member (forgot his name) just came off a bit arrogant/haughty instead of being helpful. Not sure how their suits come out ultimately (they may be really great and many seem to love them!) but we didn't feel a ton of excitement or confidence based on the consultation and decided not to move forward. We just got the sense that they didn't really have the time of day for us. We totally understand schedules may be busy and you might not be able to make a suit within our desired timeline, but then all you need to do is just say so beforehand (we had inputted our dates / timelines during the appointment booking). I work for an event space in SF that specializes in weddings and have recommended Proper Suit to a variety of bride and grooms looking for a special outfit for the big day. Planning a wedding can be as stressful as it can be fun, and it's great that they don't have to worry about looking sharp on their wedding day thanks to Proper Suit. A couple tips that I've noticed: They will probably need around 2 months from first fitting to the wedding date, although they have made suits quicker for some grooms in a bind in the past. Made to measure and custom suiting can be outrageously expensive and stuffy but these prices are very fair and reasonable compared to what you can find off the rack at Saks or N Marcus and those suits don't even fit and you have very few options there. I had the pleasure of having McGregor assist me on my latest blazer purchase. They stock all the regular fabrics but after looking extensively I found the most perfect fabric in one of their seasonal books. All the fabrics are either Italian or English and they have good relationships with the mills so the prices are awesome. This fabric is cashmere and I can't wait to wear it this winter for business events. Fit is always spot on. The service is amazing. I don't feel like a client with Proper Suit but rather a friend. I like this suit, a lot. It's the best fitting piece of clothing I own. I find myself looking for places to wear it because I feel damn good in the thing; bought it for my summer wedding, with plans to use for business afterwards, a tough cross but I think we pulled it off. The experience was something entirely new for me. Finding the studio in an old firehouse was tricky the first time, but it certainly added to the allure. Max was immediately personable, and an educator. I don't stomp around in New Balance shoes, but I am also out of my element when it comes to style or fashion. Like a true professional Max listened to my case, why I needed the suit, prompted me for things I like and don't like, budget, personal taste...all things he brought into his suggestions on details of the suit; wools, buttons, linings, pockets, the myriad of cuts. My fiancée joined me for the fitting, as it was a suit meant for our wedding, and she too came away thoroughly impressed with the experience. Some weeks later the suit arrived and I went back for the final fitting. Hot dog it fit well. I'm between short and regular jacket lengths, but no matter when it's made to measure for me. The pants were a tad long so those were taken back for the tailor, but they provide a slim fit without the spandex look for my soccer legs. I also used the opportunity to pick Max's brain for style advice on pairing with the blue suit. In all about a 6 week process, but now they have my measurements for my next suitS. The experience was a nice mix between modern convenience with old school, classic quality. I've been recommending to all my friends. Had my first experience at getting a custom suit at Hall Madden and it was terrific. Scheduling appointments process was pretty simple. Up to date technology lets you pick a day and time. Initial fitting appointment was great. Andrew walked me through the different fits, sizes, fabric, etc. Gave a wide variety of price ranges to choose from as well. I went for a sharkskin, most expensive one, for my wedding. Follow up appointments were simple as well. Let me start by saying Woah and not in a good way. I booked an appointment online with Hall Madden. The initial call to confirm the appointment he was quite rude not communicating well. When I arrived for my fitting, Andrew did not have my appointment despite my confirmation email or conversation. He had me confused with someone else he was working with. He was unorganized and lost in his own thoughts. Within the first ten minutes being in the store he managed to lose his phone twice no exaggeration. Both times I helped him relocate it where it was right on the table. He then managed to get my name wrong more then once. I asked him if we should reschedule as he seemed rushed and not clear headed. He clapped his hands and replied we have 27 minutes. He started flipping through suits without asking me what I wanted. Not only was he rushed but he was unaware. He continued to rush me through the process. He did not want to help me to think about what I wanted, he was just there to overcharge for a suit once I had a decision. In addition to being unhelpful he wasn't kind. His tonality to me is one thing but the way he treated my Mom was unacceptable. In addition, he dressed sloppy, his suit was wrinkled! He was unaware of the Juneteenth holiday and showed no compassion for my questions on the process. For someone who "helped" with suits daily he was useless. One word of advice Andrew - completion. You're not the only tailor on the block and I would never spend $1500 with you. Really confused by all the great reviews, but I cannot recommend Hall Madden. read more

I've owned jackets all my life, but I've never loved any of them until Andrew helped me make exactly what I wanted - even though I didn't know what I wanted until I met him and went through the process. Off the rack patterns fit me, but I'm really particular about the details, and I was tired of searching for the fabric color I wanted, the pockets I wanted, and so on. (Heck, I build my own keyboards for my computer to get exactly what I want; is it any surprise I'm trying to do the same for my clothes?) After several tries to get a jacket elsewhere, some of which were regrettable returns, I decided I needed fully canvassed construction because my shoulders are so broad that I need the help draping the fabric across them. I also wanted a pen pocket because I write with fountain pens and you need to carry them tip up. After meeting Andrew, he pulled out fabric swatches and I ordered this awesome charcoal gray flannel with a natural stretch. He also explained that part of what I didn't like about my current jacket was that the lining was probably synthetic and I should get a high-quality Bemberg lining instead. The fitting process is cool. Andrew builds you a "test" jacket out of cheap fabric to get the fit right. In between my original fit and the test fit, I lost weight. We made some subtle adjustments to the fit based on the test jacket and how I intended to use it. I travel a lot, and I wanted to be able to wear the jacket and be comfortable schlepping luggage around in overhead bins, trains, and taxis. Well, the jacket was done, and the final version fit like a dream. When I put it on for the first time, it just slid over my shoulders like nothing I've ever owned. When I ran an errand later that day, I used my new jacket instead of my standard outwear (an Arcteryx softshell) just to see what it was like. The fit is so good that combined with the natural stretch of the flannel, it's like I wasn't wearing a second layer. The finishing is outstanding. There are a couple of fun details: the inside of the pocket flaps are lined, and underneath the back collar, Andrew stitched in my initials. Yes, Andrew is more expensive than many custom places.
