While traveling across the United States, we made a stop near Mount Rushmore and discovered Halley's West, a charming restaurant owned and operated by a father-and-son team. Although the space is cozy, it offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor area providing some great views. We visited with a group of seven, and despite the restaurant being busy, our order was taken quickly. The service was excellent--our server was attentive, friendly, and made sure everyone in our group was well taken care of throughout our visit. After placing our orders, we grabbed our drinks from the fountain and settled in to enjoy lunch. One highlight that deserves special mention is their house-made root beer. If you're a root beer fan, you're in for a treat. My brother Luis absolutely loved it and couldn't stop talking about how good it was. The restaurant was clean, welcoming, and full of interesting items available for purchase. The food was equally impressive. The cheese curds and jalapeño poppers were delicious appetizers, and the burger was cooked perfectly. The home fries tasted fresh and homemade, adding a nice touch to the meal. One thing to note is that the restaurant does not have its own restroom. If needed, you'll have to use the public restroom located nearby along the same strip. However, this was only a minor inconvenience and did not take away from our overall experience. What stood out most was the son of the ownership team, who was working the floor during our visit. He was approachable, professional, and genuinely cared about providing great service to every customer who walked through the door. Overall, our visit was quick, enjoyable, and memorable. If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by Halley's West for a buffalo burger and a glass of their homemade root beer. It's a wonderful local spot with great food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere. On to the next adventure--and don't forget to tip your servers!

We were staying at the nearby Roosevelt Inn and we wanted to grab a quick bite before heading to Mount Rushmore for the evening. We stopped here because they had the best reviews on Yelp in their strip mall. The owner took our orders at the counter. Three of us had the Buffalo Burger and fries which was tasty. We also had a Root Beer Float and the owner brought us extra root beer. We got our food quickly. The owner was super friendly and let the kids in our group pick a rock from a bag. I took off one star because it wasn't air conditioned (they also have outdoor seating) and the door was propped open so flies were dive bombing us while we ate.

Best pickles I've ever had

I've tried a bison burger a couple times since visiting South Dakota and this place is #1. Absolutely delicious bison burger, and the french fries topped it off perfectly. The pickles on the burger were some of the best pickles I've tasted, and I'm a huge Claussen fan usually. The guy running the shop hooked me up with a couple more pickles to finish off my burger and was super cool about it. Really nice guy. There is small amount of seating on the inside and a little patio outside with tables and chairs, although I did witness people swatting the bees off of their food a lot. The service was excellent and the staff were very nice and attentive. I would absolutely come here again and grab another bison burger.

If you're looking for top notch customer service, flavorful food, and timely service, look no further than Halley's West. The owner goes above and beyond to make sure you feel right at home. They allowed us to taste test the ice cream and drinks to ensure we would love our order and experience.

This is a wonderful place to stop and eat!! 2 miles away from Mount Rushmore. The service was great, the food was fresh, hot and tasty. I had the double Buffalo burger with pepper jack cheese and it was divine. The homemade, house cut fries are hot and delicious. I love fries like that. They feature a very good root beer on tap here as well, served in a frosty mug!! I enjoyed the great outdoor patio seating for my visit. They serve ice cream too and of course delicious root beer floats. A bit pricey, but hey small resort town...the usual. It was worth it and very scrumptious. I left for Mount Rushmore very satisfied. There's a lot of food options in this center and this place definitely holds it own, try it out.

Great burger and home cut fries but bring something to kill the flies. Flies keep it from being a 5 star.

Very polite staff, owners on site. Great wine selection, 4…read moreseat bar as well as tables inside and outside. Small, quaint, romantic restaurant with high(er) end food. They do need to update the online menu. Filet listed online for $40.75 was $55. Date listed $6.75 were $10. Filet Mignon w/veal Demi glaze was awesome, you could cut it with a butter knife. I didn't like the small potato bites. Should have mashed potatoes $55 Bison ravioli was good (not made in house) but the sauce was on the salty side. Medjool dates filled with blue cheese were great $10. $10 is too expensive for these though. Overall a great place for a relaxing dinner. Or just have wine and appetizers.

Apparently, they don't serve actual wedges because it causes too much waste. The owner agreed they need to change the name of the salad. My beet salad was tasty. Now after waiting 50 minutes with only one other couple in the restaurant, our entrees were served. They should have some games to play at the table for the long wait times. We were actually planning to order dessert but ran out of time. My salmon was cooked very well and tasted fresh. My husband's vegetable lasagna was saved by the mushroom gravy otherwise it lacked flavor.

Best selection of wine in the black hills with view and service to match. Wife and I come here…read moreweekly!

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Deadwood…read more My wife and I stumbled upon this incredibly unique and peaceful wine house just steps away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Deadwood--and what a discovery it was. In a city known for its casinos and saloons, this beautifully restored home offers an entirely different kind of experience: one centered around relaxation, quality, and taste. Housed in a gorgeously maintained historic property, this spot features multiple cozy rooms filled with elegant furnishings and stained glass windows, along with spacious porches both upstairs and downstairs where you can unwind with a glass or bottle of wine. The ambiance alone makes it worth a visit. The wine selection is top-tier and surprisingly affordable, especially for South Dakota. They offer a solid list of wines by the glass or bottle, but also have a curated room filled with exceptional bottles from around the world--at prices that beat anything else we saw in the area, whether in Custer or Deadwood. You can enjoy your wine there (with a small corkage fee) or take it home. To complement the wine, they serve thoughtfully arranged charcuterie boards featuring a variety of cheeses, fruits, and other healthy bites. You can also add sliced salami to customize your board further to enhance the experience. This isn't your typical restaurant or wine bar--it's more like being invited into someone's beautifully curated home for a relaxing afternoon or evening. It's a peaceful, upscale oasis in a town that can sometimes feel a little wild. Highly recommended if you're looking for something refined, memorable, and just a short stroll from the main strip.
