Corn cakes! We drive 40 mins for these corn cakes on a somewhat regular basis. If you love pollenta these are for you. Most corn cakes (pancakes with cornmeal) end up really crunchy and weird consistency. But, these are fluffy in the middle and crispy on the outside. I suggest switching sausage for the apple chicken sausages. We asked for the recipe and they won't share it but we are working on it. The staff is very warm and kind (motherly almost). I went on sunday and though I wanted the plantain souffle I was not willing to wait. You can guage a good place based on the line and this line was a good one! I got the eggs, cornmeal pancakes and chicken apple sausage. The pancakes I would give 5 Stars! SO good! But sausage, i have had better. Service, ok. You really can't go wrong when you go to Hallie's for breakfast. That is, if it's not during Saturday or Sunday, when you will encounter lines to get in. Granted, when I see folks queuing up outside a restaurant it's a good sign. But in my humble opinion it's not THAT good. We had the standard two eggs, toast, and home fries, and it was all prepared just right: nicely browned toast with butter, perfectly scrambled eggs, and the home fries were more along the lines of hash browns which IMO are better than just fries. What would have made a nice touch would be to put the jam and marmalade (that came with the toast) in a little crockery pot rather than a dish of Smuckers pre-packaged individual servings. The coffee and orange juice were very good, as was the service, in fact out server's cheerful demeanor helped make our experience more enjoyable. read more

Great spot with fond memories from decades back! Homey atmosphere with old Petaluma flavor. Enormous menu for such a little place. My friend and I were curious to try Hallies diner. We waited for a seat and we're seated outside on a beautiful afternoon. There was a radio propped up on the wall next to us playing non descriptive but annoying music. None of the diners outside were listening, so we just turned the radio off. Other diners showed their approval. Then an employee came and turned it on, we were outside, mind you and the "music" was not even discernible, just background noise. Again we turned it off, again to the nods of other diners. A staff member said the owner wanted the radio on, period, even though the diners clearly were happy to have this noise off. We changed tables, to get away from the radio and it was turned up. At no time was the staff apologetic or thoughtful to us, the customer. We ordered and the food took an inordinately long time to arrive. The wait staff was unfriendly. Though, I must say, when the food arrived, it was delicious, except for the burnt toast. Very disappointing service! Very slow to take our order and even slower to cook it. We couldn't tell who was really our server as a different person brought the food than who took the order and never once returned to see how we were doing. Had to finally grab another waitress to ask for a refill on coffee. There were even 2 empty tables, so it wasn't super busy at 12 noon on a Saturday. Mixed reviews on the food. The waffle was the thinnest and flattest waffle I have ever seen. Don't expect anything close to a Belgium waffle. French toast was good and fluffy. Salmon scrambled eggs with onions and cream cheese was delicious. The chorizo-avocado omelette was ok but not great. Nice that they don't skimp on the avocado. One of us had a descent portion of potatoes and the other had a slim portion of them. End result is the food is about a B- and service was D+. Nothing "wowed" us so doubt it was worth the $45 breakfast bill for 3 people. read more

I really like this place since it opened in the old Swensen's Ice Cream location. The corned beef hash with poached egg is excellent, love the blueberry pancakes and the bacon and ham as sides are thick and delicious. Hit Petaluma on a rainy December Saturday morning hungry with a big shopping day ahead. My wife recommended Halle's for breakfast based on word of mouth, so I took the gamble. Ordered the corn cakes, which they are known for. My meal was dissatisfying. The corn cakes were hard and tasteless. The chicken apple sausage was only marginally edible. On the plus side, my eggs were perfectly poached. Not a hard task, but surprisingly hard to come by in most cafes. Two sets of obnoxious kids didn't help either. read more

Nice to find an excellent breakfast spot in Petaluma after being here for five months. Service is top notch, food is delicious, portions are big enough but not disgustingly big, and nothing is overly salty like you often find with breakfast places. Yum! I had the Petaluma eggs- I think it was called? (ham, spinach and lemon sauce with a side of potatoes) It was really good. My friend got the salmon scramble, he loved it but said mine was better! I had a bite of his, it was really good, I thought it was equal to mine=) The best part was we sat at one of the two small tables outside with our dog. The server was so friendly.. and she brought our dog water before we could even ask. I will definitely go back. As others have stated, the service and "system" needs an update at this place. We didn't even get a chance to taste the food because we left when we found out they were seating people who arrived after us. Here is what happened: We arrived on a Sunday morning and there was nothing available, we said we would take anything first available and put our names on the list. Then some time later I notice people who arrived after us being seated. 3 parties, to be exact. I walked inside and asked why these people were being seated before us. They told me that they don't seat people outside unless they "specifically ask to be seated outside". I reiterated that we would sit ANYWHERE. So just then another outdoor table became available and I walked outside to tell my hubby what was going on. A woman came out to clear the table as I was telling my hubby what had happened. The woman turned to us in a very snarky voice and said "that is just the way we do things, so NOW you know". My hubby and I took one look at eachother and said, no thank you, we are not spending our money here and we are going somewhere else! If we were next on the list, we should be given a choice of where to sit, end of story. Even when we said ANYWHERE they still sat people before us. Plus, 3 parties were seated before us and there were only 2 outdoor tables, so they really need to get it together. read more

Hallies was great! The five stars are mostly for the service and the fact that they have an espresso machine! The food was great, not exceptional. I had the Ranch scramble and the onions and linguica bits were good but it could have used more linguica, it was alot of eggs. The side of bacon I ordered was decent. Came here for breakfast and ordered the crabcake benedict. I was a little disappointed that the "crab" cake was not real crab. I would have liked to be warned about that. I also would have gladly paid extra for real crab. However, everything else (including the way I wanted my eggs cooked) was fine and the service was quick and attentive. Great breakfast and lunch options. Just finished wolfing down the roast turkey sandwich with pesto and a salad - it might be my favorite lunch sandwich option in town. Hallie's is about as consistent you can get for food, I've not had a bad meal there, and often times it is excellent. Lots of people are giving this place bad reviews due to the long wait outside and of parking situations. There's free parking in the garage across the street and the wait isn't too long. Make sure to go in to get your name on the list. Really the wait doesn't bother me, the food comes fast enough to pay that off. They have a good variety of food, but I would not recommend their pancakes. They suck up all the syrup and have a horrible texture. If you are a huge fan of hash-browns, they don't have any. It's not overly noisy, even with the crowd. Servers are nice, and the food is pretty good. Overall, I would recommend this place as long as your not in a huge rush. read more

A friend took me to Hallie's Diner years ago. I ordered the Latin Scramble and it's still my favorite. Home fries with sour cream are killer. I like to come for breakfast on the weekend after my massage. The counter or a booth are best. The staff is friendly and they refill your coffee cup often!
