Surprise get together with family. My brother came in from Hawaii and was wanting to go to Maine for Lobster, there was no time to travel to Maine from South Carolina. I contacted my daughter Sarah who lives in Hallowell and she gave me this stores information. We couldn't get to Maine for lobster so we had Maine lobster come to us! The guys were very helpful and professional, helped me decide what I needed and gave info about the shipping process. We ordered 10 lobster. We made lobster and a seafood boil. Let me tell you the lobster was amazing! I would absolutely do business with them again! That was another check off our bucket list. Thank you so much. UPDATE: 3 weeks ago I was contacted by Hallowell Seafood regarding this review via text message. I responded and simply stated, "if you want to make it right, simply send me a check." I provided my address. No check ever arrived. ORIGINAL REVIEW: We had been searching for someone who sells Tourtière (French Canadian Meat Pie) and found that this place allegedly did. We bought 2 but found out when we got home that it was not Tourtière Pie. They sold me something that looked brain matter grey with bits of darker grey and orange chunks. Absolutely disgusting. I went back the next day to return them. When I tried to inform the kid behind the counter, he became argumentative and defensive stating that that is Tourtiere Pie and that is what it's supposed to look like. He questioned where I was from, I informed him that I grew up in Maine and have eaten it thousands of times. This is not what I wanted and paid for. I wanted my money back...that's all. Still wanted to argue.. telling me to take it up with the people who bake the pies for them...that's the pie he grew up eating. I asked him to google images so that he could show me one that looked grey and contained orange "meat." It is not out there. He eventually stopped arguing and went to the register and clicked a few buttons seemingly to reimburse my debit card. The funds never were returned according to my bank records. I've been buying seafood here since they opened. It's a nice little shop and the seafood is usually very good. I did get some mussels once that were literally beyond their expiration date but mistakes can happen. Anyway, I'm writing because you should be warned of a couple of things - they will always try to upsell you with "It's a little over. Is that okay?" or something similar. Every. Time. Also, weigh your items when you get home. You might be surprised at what you find. Also, often they have 2 prices, a credit and a cash price. If you are paying cash be sure they charge you the cash price and not the credit price. Pay attention when you shop here. read more

My wife comes here whenever we need a pound of raw shrimp and often asks if they can peel and devein them for her. She stated that the older gentlemen (owner) is very helpful with this however the younger gentlemen often tries to give the runaround when asked. She was told if she called ahead they could do it for her and have it ready to be picked up by the time she got there. She tried calling, a different worker gave her the runaround. I was stopping by today and called ahead and the younger gentlemen was telling me they sell the raw shrimp in 2 lb bags raw and ready to go. I realized the miscommunication after the phone call that he probably thought I was fine with frozen shrimp (I'm not). I go to the store and made the mistake of ringing up a pound of pre cooked shrimp which I realized shortly after it was rang up. What I needed was the raw (unfrozen) shrimp peeled and deveined. So, we voided that and I told the guy that the shrimp I went over to was what I actually needed. He then proceeds to try to sell me the 2 lb bags raw of frozen shrimp. I tell him that's not what I need. He tells me I can just keep what I don't use for later. I tell him I don't have the freezer space for it. I tell him I need the raw shrimp I'm looking at peeled and deveined and he acts like he doesn't know what I'm talking about stating "so you're looking for shrimp that you can peel and deveined at home?". It was at this point I had lost my patience and decided not to give this place my business. Seriously, if you have an issue peeling and deveining shrimp just be straight forward with me so I can go elsewhere and not waste my time. I understand the 2 lb bag of frozen shrimp would've been cheaper but ultimately I'm not going there on tight budget. If I was; it's a lot cheaper to get peeled and deveined raw, frozen, shrimp from hannaford. Which is where I ended up going. Huge ball drop on the customer service side of things. read more

JUST GO THERE! Stopped in this small but well stocked Seafood & Produce store while my wife was antique shopping in town. I was just looking with no intention of buying anything. The owner (I assume) was bantering with an employee in the back room and having fun, then he started on me, my Massachusetts accent got him going. Before I knew it, he had me in the back room for a taste of homemade lobster stew he was making. It was the best I ever had...a simple blend of tons of lobster, cream, butter, pepper and salt I think. I purchased a quart and it was packed with lobster meat, also bought some lobster salad to bring home. The Lobster salad was unbelievable, fresh cooked, and hand picked for sure because all the meat was there, stringy leg meat, claws, tail, knuckles etc. If you know anything about fresh lobster salad, what I've described is hard to find...and very little mayo! We live maybe an hour away in Bath and will drive there to bring home stew and lobster salad without hesitation! If you want "Red's Seafood like quality" to bring home...this is the place!!! read more

Wow, I'm suprised no one has reviewed this place yet. Since I'm in Augusta for work during the week, I decided to get some of the famous Maine lobsters and bring them back to Boston with me for dinner. A coworker recommended this place. This place is totally market-style with fresh produce, jams and jellies, and other Maine specific items. They have lots of fresh seafood, including both hard shell and soft shell lobsters. The guys working behind the counter were very helpful, even to an out of towner like me. They walked me back to the tank and helped me pick my dinner. Prices are super cheap and they have fresh crab meat and lobster tail meat as well. They packed the little guys in an insulated bag and assured me they would be okay until I got home. 6 hours later, the lobsters were still alive and kicking. Hallowell seafood is amazing! The owner Justin(the whole staff really) is so friendly and goes above and beyond for his patrons. This is our spot for lobster, salmon and shellfish, we love to cook and wouldn't dream of buying seafood anywhere else. I just recently learned they offer lobster rolls so of course we had to try one! The lobster roll runs about $18, on a soft hoagie roll about 8" long, mountains of quality claw and tail meat. The only critique I can make is that there was quite a bit too much mayo, it over shadowed the impressive amount of lobster. I really love a bit of lettuce on my lobster rolls, I think that would be a good option to have. Next time I'll ask for light mayo as there will definitely be a next time read more

This is a great place to get fresh, high quality fish and seafood. They also have a nice selection of seasonal vegetables, pickles, wines, and other edible delights. We recently bought some of their pre-made lobster salad. It wasn't cheap, but we didn't have the time or energy to boil and shell lobsters that day so we were happy to pay extra for the convenience. Didn't weigh what it was supposed to weigh when I checked on my digital scale. I thought it seemed a little light.

Watch what you get charged and pay. Ask for 1/2 pound you get charged for 3/4. When a customer says what they want give it to them, don't say "oh, I went a little over". Scammy has heck. Then when you ask for some to come off to make it right, they say "already packaged". Seafood may be good but sketchy sales practices are not. Keep an eye on them. Crooked Crooked Crooked! for the second time RIPPED off. I went in with another person, bought 109.00 worth of seafood, we all heard the number. days later my husband asked me why did you spend + $144.00 for seafood??!! I said I didn't!!! I went though and even added up with sales tax, $108. I went in and asked for the guy to call me 2x. last time I went in I left my bank statement showing what he charged me and told him I am contacting the better business bureau, got a message. Then I go in, he was there, I tell him why I am there, he acts like new news to him and his ENTIRE demeanor changed; NASTY. By the way, this is the second time I got ripped off by this place. bought 3 lobsters for my parents right before I went back to my duty station in Germany. was supposed to be less than $30. my credit card was charged $60. YES SIXTY dollars for 3 1lb and 1/4 lobsters, he didn't think that was STRANGE??!!!! So this time when he told me the cost of my purchase I had a witness that the bill was 109.00 and my bank statement says 144. I see what is going on!!! HE is all MR. friendly, while he doesn't give an itemized receipt and pads the bill etc. BUYER BEWARE THIS GUY IS A SCUM BAG. Oh and he said, talk to my customers they are happy with me, and I laughed because I talked to 3 people and they told me how they order 1 pound of something, with other items, and he will sell you 3 pounds of something. nothing is marked, there is no weigh scale with the price print out. Never this would happen here. Cute store, guy seems friendly, talks fast repeats himself, catch him in his lie and you will see how it really is. I've just returned from a girls' weekend away in Maine. My sister (it was HER birthday weekend!) treated us to lobsters and steamers from Hallowell Seafood. Hands down, the best steamers I've ever had...and I'm a New England native who enjoyed many clambakes as a kid because my aunt and uncle used to dig clams every weekend. Justin steamed the lobsters for us, and they were perfectly done. He had everything ready in insulated containers so all we had to do was crack them open and enjoy.
