I brought my vehicle to Hal's for an oil change and 30k/50k-mile maintenance recommendations. I will say that my first experience here about a year ago for an oil change was positive, and I left feeling like I had found a shop I could trust. At that time, my oil change was approximately $60. During this visit, the same oil change was nearly $100, which caught my attention and prompted me to take a closer look at the estimate. Unfortunately, what I found only raised more concerns. When I reviewed the maintenance estimate, I noticed several items that didn't seem right. The first was brake cleaning listed multiple times throughout the estimate, including places where it didn't appear to make sense. When I asked about it, my service advisor, Chris, acknowledged that several of the charges should not have been there and removed them. Next was a transfer case fluid service that included fluid priced at approximately $185 per liter. After researching the fluid myself and finding it available online for around $45 per liter, I questioned the charge. I was then told the wrong fluid had been listed. The price was subsequently reduced to approximately $85 per liter, which was certainly better than $185 but still appeared quite high compared to retail pricing. The reason, I'm only buying one, it's not like I have 300 in stock. The estimate also included a coolant flush and fuel injector cleaning--both expensive services that are not recommended by the manufacturer until much later in the maintenance schedule. When I pointed this out, it was acknowledged that these services were not yet due. At that point, it became difficult to view these recommendations as anything other than unnecessary upsells. Adding to my concerns, during one of our follow-up conversations I was told that spark plugs also needed to be replaced. This recommendation, which potentially legitimate, seemed to appear only after I had already questioned several other items on the estimate. By that point, it felt as though additional services kept getting added rather than confidence being built in the original recommendations. I also asked if there was any room to adjust the labor charges for the front and rear differential services, as they appeared significantly higher than comparable estimates I had obtained elsewhere. Chris responded that he didn't "just have discounts to throw around," yet ultimately offered a $50 discount. The contradiction, combined with the tone of the conversation, left me feeling as though asking reasonable questions about pricing was being viewed negatively rather than as part of being an informed customer. What was most disappointing was the overall interaction. After raising several legitimate questions about incorrect or unnecessary charges, I felt like I was being treated as though I was the problem rather than a customer trying to understand and verify the work being recommended. If I had not reviewed the estimate carefully, I could have easily authorized services that were either incorrectly quoted or not yet needed. I ultimately approved only the oil change and declined the remaining services. I was also surprised to learn that the shop's labor rate is $240 per hour, and after comparing estimates with another highly rated local shop, I found significant differences in both pricing and recommended work. I understand that mistakes can happen, and I don't mind paying for quality work. What I do expect is accurate estimates, recommendations that align with the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, and respectful treatment when asking questions, not irritation. Unfortunately, this experience left me with concerns about transparency and trust. The repeated corrections to the estimate only happened because I questioned the charges, and that is not the level of confidence I want to have in a repair shop. What ultimately solidified my decision not to return was the pickup experience. After multiple discussions regarding incorrect charges, unnecessary recommendations, and estimate revisions, there was no acknowledgment of the mistakes, no apology for the confusion, and no effort to rebuild trust. The interaction felt rushed and dismissive. I was simply handed my paperwork, told the total, and sent on my way. Customer service matters just as much as technical expertise, and unfortunately this experience fell short on both fronts. I appreciated the positive experience I had during my first visit, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I brought my vehicle to Hal's Auto Care based on a referral from a friend. I had recently installed brand‑new brake pads on both the front and rear, but the right front pad was making a noise. I requested a simple inspection only. Because I was leaving town for two days, I informed the shop that they could call my friend solely to notify him when the inspection was complete and what the problem was. At no time did I authorize him to make decisions or approve repairs on my behalf. I informed the shop I would be out of town for two days. While I was out of town, Hal's contacted my friend and told him that my vehicle "needed a complete brake job" and was "unsafe to drive." They also claimed the front pads had been installed backwards--an impossibility--and that both sets of pads were "old and damaged," despite the fact that they were brand new. My friend did not know my vehicle's maintenance record, only that my brakes were squeaking and I wanted them looked at and needed a ride from the shop to the rental car agency. When I returned, I learned that Hal's had proceeded with a full brake job without my authorization and without ever providing me with a written estimate, as required by California law. Under Business & Professions Code § 9884.9, an auto repair dealer must provide a written estimate and obtain the customer's authorization before performing any repairs. Additionally, Title 16 CCR § 3353-3356 requires that the estimate be in writing, signed or expressly authorized by the customer, and that no work may be performed without documented consent. None of these requirements were met. When I arrived to pick up my vehicle, I was presented with an invoice for approximately $1,500 for "premium" pads and rotors. I asked how a basic inspection had turned into a major repair, and I was again told that the pads were old and damaged. I paid the invoice only because I knew they would not release my vehicle otherwise. I also requested that the removed parts be placed in my trunk; they were not, despite Title 16 CCR § 3355, which requires shops to return replaced parts upon request. Most concerning, the $1,500 brake job did not resolve the original issue. The same noise continued daily for nearly two weeks afterward, which is documented. I sent a written demand for a refund, which the shop refused, claiming they had authorization. I asked to see it. They have never produced any document bearing my signature authorizing repairs, nor any written estimate. They also cannot produce any document showing that my friend signed anything, because he did not. Under Title 16 CCR § 3353, only the registered owner or their documented designee may authorize repairs. No such authorization exists. I filed a complaint with the Bureau of Automotive Repair. The investigator denied the claim based on the shop's assertion that they had my friend's signature. My friend never signed any document, and I am now in the process of subpoenaing the investigator's report to review what was relied upon. I have requested the investigator's supervisor's contact information but have received no response. I am noting the Bureau's determination here only because Hal's has already used it to claim they "did nothing wrong," with the BBB. My complaint with them is listed as "unresolved." Regardless of that claim, the shop performed an expensive repair without written authorization, without a written estimate, and without my consent--clear violations of the Automotive Repair Act. I am filing suit this week. When this matter is before a judge, rather than an investigator who accepted the shop's statements without verifying the alleged signature, I will update this review. If the shop produces a document containing my friend's signature, he will pursue legal action for forgery. This shop was unaware of the fact that I was a wholesale manager for many years in this industry and I have seen first-hand the type of bait-and-switch that this shop pulled on me and my friend. They absolutely took advantage of the situation. They stand by their assertment that the repairs were authorized and continue to refuse to refund my money, leaving no other option but to sue. Consumers should exercise caution. This business presents itself as friendly and accommodating, but my experience reflects unauthorized repairs, inconsistent explanations, and refusal to provide required documentation. I hope that Hal's leaves a comment, because I plan to update this after I have my day in court. If they convince the judge that they acted in accordance with the requirements of law, and can prove it, I will gladly acknowledge and apologize for this review. We had an excellent experience with Hal's Auto Care. The air conditioning on my 2023 Kia Niro had been inconsistent (sometimes working, sometimes not). Chris was working with us and he was extremely helpful: he explained what they found carefully and throughly in a way I could easily understand, answered all my questions, and gave me all of the information I needed to make an informed decision -- all without pressuring me in one direction or another. He explained my options and costs clearly. They gave us a loaner car during the 3 days they worked on our vehicle which was so helpful! And they kept us updated at every step of the way. They are clearly experts that you can trust. At the Kia dealership in Stockton I'd had some terrible experiences, and I was looking for a smaller operation that were incredible at what they so but also trustworthy and honest. Did not have a good experience here. I went to get my AC diagnosed and everything was great at first, even loaned me a car and/or ride back home. The issue came when I tried to pick my car up and the loaner car alarm started going off extremely loud and nothing would turn it off. Apparently it had an anti theft system that I was never informed of, I also realized they kept the paper I signed for the loaner car and never gave me a copy to show I was legally allowed to drive it if I was to get pulled over. The biggest issue was the service severely declined after I called to inform about the issue with the car alarm, the manager seemed frustrated that my experience was going bad and instead of trying to make up for it, he completely stepped back and the things they planned for my servicing as far as getting me another car, having a second look at my car for the day were rebuffed and I didn't find out until I came up there for the services. They chose to "take a quick look" again really fast which had me there for hours even though I had work, gave me a $3500 diagnosis and then wouldn't show me any in-depth pictures of the problems and when I asked if he could or had any he simply said "no, we don't." Very short and nasty lol. Great thing is I had a warranty from Honda and got my AC fixed for $0 this weekend! That's what happens when you're a good person, you will be blessed because of it. Not a trustworthy place you'd feel comfortable and I don't recommend giving any hard earned money to this place at all. read more

We are sorry to say that we will no longer be clients of your automotive shop. For many years, we trusted your business for minor automotive repairs and maintenance. Most recently, we brought in my mom's Toyota Camry due to issues with the motor mounts. After multiple visits and 2 repairs that left the car running unusually, we were told that this was the best that could be done and that no further improvements were possible. Unfortunately, the problem continued to worsen over the following months. We ultimately sought a second opinion from another garage. They determined that incorrect, low-quality motor mounts had been installed, and that these parts were actually less expensive than what we had been charged. In effect, we were billed dealership-level pricing for inferior parts, which turned out to be the root cause of the ongoing issue. We returned to your shop with documentation from the second garage. While we appreciate that you agreed to refund the $1,700 and accepted the return of the parts, the situation has significantly impacted our trust and confidence in your services. For this reason, we will not be returning as customers. read more

I had a coolant leak from my radiator they showed a photo of the leak then they broke down what it would cost to repair they kept me informed on what repairs they were doing and when done with repairs they showed a list what was done and what parts they used( good quality parts (Denso) also received a 10% discount for being a veteran. Very late review but I had my car serviced by Hal's on 10/06. I had an electrical inspection done initially to find out what was wrong with my car because my car battery was depleting by morning and I had just gotten a battery replacement elsewhere. The inspection costs $200 and is very detailed! They send you the breakdown of everything they checked and what they found through email and a link! JP kept me updated everyday as well! I had to get the ignition switch replaced and a new cylinder lock . My car was in the shop for 2.5 days but again JP notified me that I could use the shop's loaner car since I mentioned I had to work the following days. The price range is mid but definitely worth it! They were very transparent and informative about everything! 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to get their car fixed up. read more

Hope your experience is better: My dad is 94 and wants to sell his (beloved) car. He still drives but shouldn't ;). Had Hal's fix up the vehicle for sale - and everything was perfect. They did a great job for a reasonable price. They even called back to ensure we were satisfied. Flash forward a couple of months... Dad found a buyer for his car, but it wouldn't start and couldn't be jumped. Battery we got was new... so I figured no problem, these guy were great - I'll just go back and they will take care of me. I went in, and Mark tells me they don't sell the battery that was in the car! He gets angry and throws me (figuratively) out of his shop. He wouldn't look up our invoice or even speak to me. I was polite and contrite... but he kicked me out of his shop and told me to leave. He refused to speak with me. The car has only driven from the shop to home since the services were rendered. They turned in our old battery for a core charge / and there was only one battery in the car when I lifted he back seat! My dad certainly didn't swap the battery out... he can't even lift it. I understand Mark's skepticism, I'm sure people take advantage of some situations... but this guy treated me like a criminal instead of a loyal customer.. which we have been for years. I can't remember being treated in a more disrespectful manner. I believe they can do good work, but if you have an issue that you need to discuss.. you are out of luck. I have a classic car that needed some basic maintenance work done to it. Recognizing that many shops no longer work on older cars, I called ahead to ascertain if Hal's would work on my vehicle. The person with whom I spoke told me it wouldn't be a problem and shared stories of his own personal experience working on the same model car as mine, so I felt comfortable enough to leave my vehicle here. Every few days I would receive calls from the shop with new items that they found that needed attention, and each time it was a substantial increase in price. This is an old car that isn't driven much and I appreciate that things will go wrong with it; thus, I authorized each of the repairs, including extensive brake work. After a few weeks, I was told my car was ready and was asked if I want to have it towed out of the shop. The mechanics could not get the car to start and suspected the issue was related to the carburetor but didn't do the repair as they were not sure this was the cause. So, I have an exorbitant bill for repairs on a car that had not even been road tested following brake work and is now not running. This was unacceptable to me. I asked the shop to diagnose and repair the issue that was causing the car to not start and they replaced the carburetor but still couldn't get the car to drive. They had no idea where to go from there and suggested I have the car towed to another shop. The bill was excessive in my mind for the work that was performed but we ultimately came to a figure that--while still high--we both agreed upon. The car was towed to another place and finally repaired properly. Unfortunately, while the car was at the second shop it was discovered that some of the work that was supposed to be completed by Hal's did not appear to have been done. I called Hal's and the person with whom I spoke talked directly to the mechanic who insisted the work had been performed. Since I wasn't present when the Hal's mechanic was working on the car and I didn't see what the second shop saw, I cannot fairly say that I'm being lied to; however, the whole situation leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Hal's offered me a complimentary oil change--which is a nice gesture--but I will definitely not be bringing any of my vehicles to this shop. Although everyone was polite in my interactions, the inability to repair my car properly and my suspicion of integrity issues preclude me from endorsing this business. read more

Mechanics are one of the lines of work where you have to be careful because if you don't know much about cars you're vulnerable and am easy target to get ripped off. Not at Hal's, they show you pictures of your vehicle and explain everything thoroughly and even give you a report of your vehicle if an inspection applies to the services you're having done. All in all you can trust them, they are honest, and they care. Look no further, call them now to set up your appointment. As far as the one star reviews go.... check out the writers Yelp reviews bet they are mostly negative. At least that's what I've found. Needed an oil change and tire rotation. We were able to get in within a few days and was finished within reasonable time. A week late our tire pressure light went on so we called to asked to have them check it out since we couldn't find a nail in any of the tires. They checked it out and filled our tires with air: good as new and NO CHARGE. Honest, reliable, quick service. read more

My parents had their 2011 Camry repaired here last week. The car was towed in with a suspected dead alternator. -Hal's marks up the RETAIL price of all parts 3-4x. A $250 denso rebuilt alternator becomes $730, a $20 accessory belt becomes $100. - Their shop rate is $200 plus per hour for simple mechanical repairs. The computer tells them it takes 4 hours (which it doesn't). And total labor for a simple, easy to access part is $840. - in addition to the $840 for the alternator install, they then charge $20.00 to install an air filter element that takes probably 30 seconds. At the end of the day, this is a $2,000 bill to install a simple, easy to access and plentiful part. If the problem had been more exotic, I can't imagine what the cost would have been. read more

Russ and Mike are good communicators and provided detailed information on what needed to be done to get done and provided a quote before starting any work. Took my vehicle in for AC work. When I took it in, I was aware of one leak in the system but I asked them to diagnose the entire system to make sure there was no other issues with the system. After the diagnosis, they informed me that they had discovered a crack in the condenser thread. They recommended I replace the condenser and a couple of lines. I approved the work. Once they had everything put back together, they then called and told me the fan clutch needed replacing. I'm Confused as to why this was not discovered in the original diagnosis I paid for. They then charged me again for labor for taking everything bac apart to replace the fan clutch. After that I picked up the vehicle and the AC was working great. Now, the worst thing was the other damage caused by the shop when they were doing it. Power steering line was bent leaving a hose rubbing against a belt. This caused a massive leak and damage to the belt. In addition, the alternator bolts were not tightened properly after the work was completed. Very disappointed with the overall results. read more

I made an appointment last Friday for this Friday to get my ac fixed because it's unbearably hot then I got a call today from them saying that they needed to cancel or reschedule my appointment. I called and told them I already took the day off work and have a lot of stuff worked out to get this done and he said there was nothing they can do and basically he was being nice and doing me a favor by calling and telling me ahead of time. From the beginning it was made very clear they did not care if I rescheduled or not. read more

I'd give it a half star if I could. I'm usually always skeptic of mechanical shops as they are rip offs and upsells. My AC was not working and I had taken it to my mechanic. There was no leak, and the main issue was electrical. My mechanic did not work on electrical so he advised me to find an auto electrician. My electrician didn't show up so I found these guys and seemed to have good reviews. The main computer of my car would not initiate for the compressor to kick in. MY ac blew cold air but would struggle to stay cold. It'll turn cold and then hot. so the issue was of a signal not being sent. I called and got a quote stating they would do "diagnostic" and check for leaks etc. I already told them what I had found out myself. They charged me $150 to tell me the same exact thing I already told them. That there was "an issue" with the signal. They wanted additional $175 to "further diagnose it via electrical". Upsell and waste of money. I left the shop and my electrician was now back at his shop. He took 20 minutes, replaced a relay fuse and snip snapped some wire on and wha la! AC worked again and only charged me $80. This place is a complete money grabber. Don't waste your money. Told me things I already knew and still charged me $150. What a waste! read more

I have had my Party Bus serviced by this company, that Specialize in A/C Repair. Nick B. and Mark (at the front office) where Amazingly Cordial, & Helpful!! The Mechanic Nick C., worked on my busses A/C, for over 6 Hours (in 100+ Heat) and went Above (& Beyond) to fix the Leak, and re-route the hoses, so they were no longer rubbing on the frame. He Is a Very Good Mechanic, that Won't Quit, until his work holds up to this companies High Standards! He Is a Breath of COOL Air, that is Hard to Find, in this day & age!! They All, are Very Busy, and At Least a Week Out, but Mark realized my Desperation, and was able to get me in (1st Priority) as my business Relies on my passengers being Comfortable (during their trip) & I had a Busy Weekend Booked. Mike (Owner) was Incredibly Helpful, and is a Wonderful, & Fare Man to work with!!! I Am So Happy to see, that Compassion, Honesty, & Understanding, Still Exists, in the Mechanic Industry! So after posting my first experience about being screwed out of $150 for an a/c system diagnosis by Hal's, I took my car to another a/c mechanic who fixed the leak and then evacuated and recharged my a/c system for $30 labor and $37 parts! When I called Hal's back and told Kenny how pissed off I was about the situation, he could only say that the other mechanic is not doing it legally. What do I care? I don't give a ratsa#& if he is. He did exactly what I asked him to do for $67, not $150 with no solution nor satisfaction. Kenny, go lube yourself! read more

Took my class B RV to Hal's as recommended by our RV builder from Elkhart, Indiana for AC NOT cooling the van. Hal's did a though Service check of our RV 's AC unit and recommended a better build/ installation of the AC unit (Pro Air) for proper cooling. read more
