Halwani is a quiet little joint off the alley behind the former Fifth Avenue Giant Eagle. An Italian restaurant, its cozy dining room is warm with dark red colors, and it has about seven to ten tables. There is seating outside on their thin sidewalk, a couple metal bistro sets uncovered, a nicer environment then you'd imagine as the alley is sleepy and there are neighborhood trees that provides some shade. The former supermarker provides plenty of parking. Not a place to go on lunch break if you have only 30 minutes; even small dishes can take the lion share of your lunch time to make, leaving you to scarf down the meal in the remaining seconds you have left. That's what happened to me with my Stromboli; they said it would take ten minutes but it took nearly twice that. Not really a complaint, good food takes time especially fresh rolled Stroms, but for those that need to get in and get out take note. Buffalo Chicken was the filling I chose. Their medium size priced at $9 and change would be considered an individual large at other places. It met my heavy appetite, but for lighter eaters a small will do. Baked perfectly, I loved the crust. Equally delicious was the chicken mixed with liquidated onions, and chesses. Jalapenos gave each bite a hot kick which balanced the sweatness of the provalone and mozzarella. The only dissapointment with the Stromboli was the hot sauce; I really didn't think it tasted, for lack of a better description, 'Buffalo' enough. Still, it was a awesome meal. Another good Stromboli I recommend is their Spinach Feta. Their specialty pizzas are a must try for the enterprising foody or pizza pie adventurer. The menu pretty extensive for a small shop. A great Grandview area bistro that I recommend trying on lazy, chill-out days when you have time. For those with short lunch breaks though, wait until after work to visit. read more

I was in the mood for pizza - definitely was looking for the "unusual". I remembered Halwani's is a pizza joint, and have read great things about their Tandoori Chicken Pizza. Perfect timing! They're kinda off the beaten path of Grandview Ave, yet a few quick steps and you're back on the main drag. It's a small pizza joint on the inside. Five four-top tables. It was rainy and cold, so I was the only patron. I imagine they do justice with delivery. Yes, I followed the hype and got a small Tandoori Chicken pie. Great place for speciality pizza. And they deliver!! We first ordered from Halwani based on Yelp reviews during a snowstorm. The friendly owner warned us that they were really busy and moving slower than usual due to the weather. That was fine with me...we were ordering well enough in advance and as long as I didn't have to brave the snow, I was happy. He said it would take about an hour and he was right - 1 hour later, just as my stomach began to growl, the pizza arrived. And the best part was, it was still hot!! What we've had here: Tandoori chicken pizza - so far, our favorite! The chicken is wonderfully seasoned and the pizza is loaded with fresh toppings. The Hawaiian - pretty good. I think it could have used more pineapple and more cheese. The almond slices were a nice touch. The BBQ Chicken - hmmm, not as good as the other two but not bad. I think some red onion and cilantro would kick this up a notch! Crazy Meat - How can you go wrong with a medley of meat? It is no surprise to me that the pizza and service here receive nearly uniform high marks. What WAS a surprise was the fact that we were able to get a pizza with barely any wait on a weekend night, and that we encountered no one else when we went to pick it up. Given the quality of the pizza, I would have expected it to be packed. We got the signature tandoori chicken pizza, and I'd absolutely order it again. It was flavorful, spicy (with a nice slow burn that built up over time), and tasted great cold the next day. If I had any complaint it would probably be that the very edge part of the crust was only standard. It did not detract from the pizza in any way. But as a typical bready option it was lacking any additional flavor to make it stand out. In my mind, it would be a perfect candidate for a dipping sauce. Finally, the service was great. The owner was friendly when I came to pick up the pizza. And, demonstrating the attention he pays to his customers, noted that I had not been in to pick up a pizza before. I hate to do this, because the white pizza here is probably my favorite in columbus. But tonight's order was...disappointing. We ordered a medium pepperoni, sausage and banana pepper; it arrived with no pepperoni. I ordered my usual white pizza, but decided to add bacon. When it arrived I was...surprised (see photo). It was a white pizza with almost raw pieces of what I am fairly certain was turkey bacon placed on top of the cheese. It was pretty gross. We actually laughed when we saw it. Ordered carry out. The owner took my call and was very friendly. I ordered 3 pizzas and some wings. The wings were really good. Grilled nicely and great flavor. The pizzas were unfortunately not quite what we expected. They tasted okay. Not bad, not great, but okay. The problem for me was the crust. From looking at the pics on Yelp and on the website I expected a nice fluffy bubbly crust. Not even close. Really really thin, flat and bland. I don't know if I ordered wrong or what, but I didn't see any options for different crusts. Soooo tired of flat Columbus pizza crust. I'm really disappointment about my experience recently with Halwani Cuisine. My fiance and I ordered this off of Door Dash. We received a small Buffalo Chicken Pizza, and an order of Cheese Ravioli. My fiance said his pizza was good, but I am very upset about the ravioli. It was $10.99 for the ravioli entree, and I received 3 raviolis and half a slice of garlic bread. They were not large raviolis either, only about 1.5 inches in diameter each. 3 raviolis for $10.99?! I was still hungry after. Were the raviolis good? Yes...but they were nothing extraordinary, that warranted the price and small amount. The total was $21.00 before Door Dash service fee and driver tip. I absolutely feel like I overpaid for something I could have made at home. I will never order, or eat at, Halwani Cuisine again. read more

Rather disappointed - I tried the much-acclaimed signature tandoori chicken pizza, and found it to be boneless chicken with a lot of hot sauce. Too spicy for me perhaps, even though I have a reasonable spice tolerance, and I didn't think much of the pizza crust/cheese either. I ordered the Classic Pizza and swapped out the mushrooms with green peppers. Although, it did not come with green peppers it was still delicious! I also ordered mild wings and bbq wings, I did not think there was enough sauce on them and the mild sauce was a tad bit on the greasy side, however they had a nice crisp breading on them. I will for sure be back, this time I got the hand tossed crust by mistake, next time I will try the original. I definitely want to try the tandoori chicken that I've heard so much about. The employees were very friendly and assisted me when I couldn't find their location. After two years in Grandview finally tried this place. Wish I had tried sooner because this was great pizza. It's wasn't like your typical central Ohio pizza, which I would say is strange. The square cuts, and most pizzaria's have almost a cracker like crust. The crust generally lacks in any "yeast" taste to it so it doesn't seem as fresh as New York Style Pizza. Thankfully, this pizza was anything but typical Central Ohio Style. It's not 100% NY Style but it's relatively close as far as thin, fresh crust. So, I had the standard go-to Cheese & Pepperoni since it was my first trip and basics first. Crust was thin and fresh, corn meal dusted to add a little crunch. The sauce was good mildly spicy and not sweet. I cannot stand sweet pizza sauce it should be outlawed. Just right amount of cheese, and the all-beef pepperoni was tasty. Pie was cooked just right. I like the cheese slightly browned and bubbly. Inside it's ho-hum but no need for frills. Small outdoor seating area which is nice. Spoke with the owner and he was quite nice and told him it was my first visit. He made sure I let him know exactly I felt about the pizza and gladly told him it was excellent. I will be back! I've read some of the reviews of the Tandori Chicken Pizza so that's next on the hit list. 4 of 5 stars because finding the perfect pizza is nearly impossible in central Ohio! 2 weekends in a row we tried ordering from here. The first time it took them 2 1/2 hours before delivering to us, considering we were asleep at this point there was no refund, no apologizes. This weekend we gave them another chance and brought up our experience from last weekend. Nope. The only thing this place has going for it is the good attitudes of the people working there. The owner has a very long essay on the back of the menu explaining that he used to work in IT and it's his lifelong dream to make pizza and he guarantees his pizza is the best you'll ever have or your money back. Well, there's more psychology than gastronomy going on at Halwani Cuisine. We ordered the white pizza, the crazy meat pizza, the taco pizza, and the South African steak pizza. The steak pizza went over ok. There were a number of issues. The first problem was that everything was underdone, so the crust wasn't crisp and the cheese wasn't melty and bubbly. The overall quality of the ingredients seemed pretty poor. I don't get the impression that anything other than the veggies are being prepared in house. This pizzeria does not utilize pork products of any kind. My people have been friends of the pig for eons. I am sure that people with strict pork related dietary restrictions would be really happy to find this place. Good customer service and good pizza too! While scoping out the Grandview pizza scene, Halwani showed up with excellent reviews in the area. With little outside knowledge, we explored the menu. The menu is full of pictures and descriptions, which definitely sold me on the place. I had wanted to try the South African pizza as something different. Unfortunately, they were out of steak. So, we stuck with a classic, the margarita. We also ordered a side of cheesy garlic bread. The manager placed our order. He was very kind and interested in why we selected his establishment. That's what I call "building the business". The service was very quick (around 20 minutes to pick up). Just enough time to grab a beer around the corner. Food was decent. Margarita pizza was very thin, but flavorful with thick chunks of garlic. Garlic bread was delicious with a nice ratio of cheese to garlic. As you can tell, I love garlic. That's Italian for me! I'd definitely try Halwani again to experience one of their unique pizza offerings like the South African. I'd recommend them as well. I probably never would have tried Halwani because it is hidden away in an alley and I wouldn't have noticed it, but we found it last year on the Fifth by Northwest Pizza Crawl and thought it was the best (so did others, as it won best pizza). Just had it again last night and am kicking myself for not getting it more often. This isn't really much of a sit-down place, but carryout or delivery is solid, and they are on Uber Eats. The menu variety make Halwani a unique place. They have a Tandoori chicken pizza, a Shanghai shrimp pizza, a South African Pizza, a Moroccan pizza, and so on, most of which I've never seen anywhere else. They also have all your standard fare and strombolis. We got one on the wild side and one standard pizza. The Tandoori chicken pizza was fantastic. It tasted just like delicious Indian food on a pizza. Beware, it is VERY spicy after a couple slices. The plain old pepperoni and peppers pizza was also quite good. Their sauce is delicious. They serve pizza, Stromboli etc but the catch is... it's with an international flare!! You see they make pizzas inspired by other countries / regions. Like a South African pizza, Chinese Pizza, Greek Pizza, Mexican Pizza, Indian pizza, Moroccan Pizza etc. and of course they have the tried and true American classics. Also what's amazing is the owners story. He has an IT PhD and left corporate America to pursue what he actually loved and that was to cook!!! That's definitely inspiring because often people do stuff for money vs. what they actually love. He is a testament of the latter. I love Columbus because of the various small businesses around the city. Some that you can't quite get anywhere. Decided to try this place as an alternate from our typical delivery spots. The cheesy garlic bread was super yummy! And yay! Pizzas are cut in triangles, not squares! As an Ohioan I guess I am supposed to like the square cut, but I just can't get there... They don't use any pork products so the pepperoni we had on our pizza was made of beef. It only had a slight taste difference from what I'm used to and overall thought it was pretty good. Prices were reasonable and we had a coupon to help out. Delivery was quick and the driver was friendly. I'm not sure I'd ever go for their more inventive sounding pizzas, just because I like standard pizza toppings the best. If you're looking for an awesome pizza spot in Grandview/Columbus, you must try Halwani! There are many different specialty pizzas (my favorite is the Crazy Meat), each served on an awesome, fluffy, pillowy crust that is somehow still strong enough to hold the pizza and all of the toppings up. The owner is extremely friendly and welcoming. There are regular pizza shops, and special pizza shops. Halwani's is the latter. I've tried the BBQ, Tandoori chicken, and pepperoni (all beef!) always with the hand-tossed or thick crust and a Stromboli. Just delish! Their food is not super oily and since they don't use pork you don't get that heavy fatty feeling like you would on other meaty pizzas. Just tasty, satisfying pies! read more

Tandoori wasn't spicy (I'm Indian though so my tastebuds are pretty numb at this point) like a few others have said. The crust was amazing. Almost like a garlic bread crust. - The lady there was extremely friendly and helpful Cons: - It was definitely warm in there. - There is seating but it's limited. I used to like this place. Heck, I considered it had pretty decent pizza outside of the downtown area. Now, what I have come to find, is the once "highly acclaimed" tandoori pizza has been reduced to wet paper dough with red paste smeared over it. Did I just pay $18.99 for a large pizza that was stretched out from a smaller ball of dough? This pizza was so thin neither the cheese, the 8 bites of chicken, or the chunks of jalapenos (which would never be used in Indian cuisine, btw) would actually stick to a served slice. I was looking to try something new last night, so I jumped on Yelp and combed over the Granview area. I finally decided on Halwani, but then it took me another 20 minutes to figure out what I wanted, since I'd never tried it before. I've heard mixed reviews for the place and didn't really know what pizza they were known for, so I just went with the classic Halwani's Supreme. I called in for take out, and it took about about 20 min. It's pretty easy to miss this place, since it's on a side street off the main drag of downtown Grandview, but it's right behind/adjacent the old Giant Eagle. They have a sign out on the sidewalk of Grandview Ave as well which informs people that not only is the restaurant back in the alle,y but that they are known for their Tandoori Chicken pizza (whoops, guess I'll have to wait until next time). There is some seating in there, but you wouldn't be able to take a big party. The pizza smelled amazing the entire drive home, and I had to keep myself from eating it in the car which was a good thing, because the slices were pretty flimsy, and I would have got it everywhere. I really really liked the taste of the pizza, especially the beef pepperoni and sausage mixed with the banana peppers. The crust was very crispy with nice flavor (I got the hand tossed crust which is an extra $.75), and the mushrooms were fantastic, probably my favorite part. My only gripe is the price is a little high at $14.99 for a medium, 12" pizza. I had no problem downing it on my own, and it definitely isn't big enough to share and actually be full. The next biggest size is the large at 14", which, depending on the pizza, hovers between $16-$19. I'm not sure if that'd be enough food for 2 or not. Halwani has a pretty large menu of specialty pies, subs, and strombolis, so I'm definitely going to swing back again and try one of these. They use quality ingredients, so I'm sure the other items will be pretty tasty as well. read more
