Skeptically, I ordered a 1/2 dozen of oysters to try as a start. Then a dozen. These are a go to. View was cool aside from the natural uncured rubbish at a glance. Good for kids! Drinks: I didn't order drinks thanks to my other fellow elite member reviews (lack goodness and came in plastic cups). They were definitely correct. Absolutely disappointed in this place. Shameful to charge me $12 for this tiny glass of LaCrema in a cheap plastic cup. I thought it was a joke so I talked to the manager. I never took a sip before the photo. Manager did not care but sure could have created a happy and returning customer by pouring a bit more in my plastic cup. Instead he said "if the bartender measured it, that's what you get" So, we paid for the $12 sip of wine and left a $20 so the server got a good tip and left to get a better meal down the road. Slick lips actually served food on real plates and not baskets. Drinks in glasses, too. Will not return to Hammerheads. I'm here for a month and this place will not get another dollar. The website does not allow you to make any changes to instead you have to flag down someone and tell them. No on site restroom. You leave the restaurant and use one near by. No handicap access and it needs to be serviced. One in the party ordered a cheeseburger and wanted some additional pickles. Got a funny look and it took some time for the two small pickles to show up. Our table had no napkins or eating utensils. We had to search for them while our food for cooler. Chicken fingers were small and not much chicken, but lots of breading. Salad was nothing to write home about. Oysters were small and expensive. Yep you pay taxes, a service fee and additional fees. We were all pleasantly surprised about how much we liked the food and what generous portions they gave us. With a location like they have it could be easy to thrive on that alone. I mean the views were awesome, the outdoor patio and live band made it a great hangout spot. I don't have a ton of detail to go into. It was a pretty straight forward meal. French bread, plain cabbage with dressing, tomatoes, pickles and fries. My review is based on Happy hour, which is 4-6 every day. Raw oysters on the half shell are 50cents each, grilled with butter and parmesan are $1 each, half price appetizers, and $2 off bottled beer and wells. We ordered a dozen raw and a dozen grilled. They are Louisiana oysters, and were average size this time of year, but very tasty. The grilled were good, but the granules of 'parmesan' which did not melt made me wonder what kind of cheese it really was, and it was salty, but still good. We also ordered a shrimp queso appetizer, which was okay, but could have had more shrimp. The location on the water on the open air patio with a view sure helped with the the ambiance, and our server was outstanding. I'm glad for that, considering most of the bad reviews were for lack of service. So we couldn't help going back the next day to another happy hour for those delicious 50cent raw oysters on the half shell. This time we tried the bang bang shrimp, $5. They were pretty tasty. You might get lucky and have a good view of the marina but the food is pretty bland. The seating area is very cramped and when we went it stared to rain and many table got up to take cover hit there really wasn't anyplace for them to go. Service left much to be expected. So I've been coming here for years and realized yesterday they changed their menu. Additionally, they obviously no longer have the Happy Hour deals. Based on the reviews, I had pretty low expectations. We are staying in the village complex and just wanted something nearby. There was a relatively long wait because they only had 3 wait staff working. After about 45 minutes, they were able to seat us. They did let us know that they were out of boiled shrimp and oysters. The servers all had masks, the host didn't, and neither did the kitchen staff. We sat us outside. The sat us away from people which was great, but before we even settled in they sat another table right next to us, even though there was plenty of space elsewhere. No biggie, we just asked to move to create more space and they were fine with that. The food: The kids shared the Mac & Cheese ($7) and the chicken fingers ($8) kids plates. My daughter didn't care for the Mac, but my son ate it up. It was just box Mac and cheese, but that's pretty normal unfortunately. They both likes the chicken fingers and the waffle fries. My wife got the grouper tacos ($17). It came with 3 nice sized tacos, tortilla chips and salsa. They were very good and filling. I know, because I ate the last one! I got the grouper sandwich with waffle fries ($17). I was very happy with my meal. I thought it tasted good and was a pretty large serving. Overall, I thought the food was good. The service was fine, and the value was ok. I'd like to go back and try their happy hour oysters ($0.50/raw and $1/cooked). Update: We went back for the happy hour. We chose hammerheads simply because we were looking for outside seating beside the water and that's what they had. We walked in as a party of 5 and were seated immediately. Unlike most restaurants, the food, drinks, alcohol, and dessert are all ordered through QR code. There's no table side service here which could be an inconvenience if you need to ask questions or make substitutions. The greeter, Bob, stood in as everyone's waiter on this particular day...he was AMAZING! Out of the kindness of his heart he checked on each and every table, made small talk, helped with QR code ordering, refilled drinks, brought out food etc. Once he found out it was my daughter's birthday he threw in 2 slices of pie on the house! A slice of ultimate peanut butter pie and a slice of key lime. The key lime was good but the size of the slice wasn't worth the normal $8 charge. Bob is the reason for the 2 extra star rating, otherwise Hammerheads is really nothing special. The food came out quickly but was mediocre. In addition to that we ordered 2 grand margaritas ($12 each) which were pretty good. The only reason I'd make a return visit would be for the margarita and key lime pie. A service charge is added to the bill in addition to the tip. If there was a competition for the worst seafood in town, this restaurant would undoubtedly take home the gold medal! My experience here was so jaw-droppingly awful that I couldn't resist sharing my gastronomic misfortune with fellow seafood enthusiasts. Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by an overwhelming odor that can only be described as a cross between low tide at the beach and a stale fish market on a hot summer day. I should have taken that as a sign to run for the hills, but I braved the stench and decided to give their culinary offerings a fair chance. Oh, how I regret that decision! Let's start with the shrimp tacos. The tortillas were fair but the true calamity lay within. The shrimp, or what was left of them after a severe case of starvation followed by overcooking, were as tough as an old sailors boots. I've found barnacles with more tenderness. It could have been crustacean-flavored chewing gum. We also ordered the fish and shrimp combo. There was not enough fish to count a full order and it came with the same bad shrimp as the tacos. Masking poor food quality with mounds of fries seems to be their solution here. Basically $23 for a side of fries. I couldn't help but notice that every dish had something in common: a complete lack of seasoning. It was as if the chef had a vendetta against salt, pepper, and any other spice known to humankind. Perhaps they believed that the sea itself would imbue their dishes with flavor. Spoiler alert: It didn't. The service matched the quality of the food. The staff seemed disinterested, bored, and more focused on chatting amongst themselves than attending to the few unfortunate souls brave enough to dine here. It was as if they were aware of the horrors unfolding in the kitchen and had given up on trying to salvage any semblance of a decent dining experience. Several mistakes were made on our order and the beer was flat. In conclusion, if you have a hankering for some delicious seafood, do yourself a favor and swim in the opposite direction of this restaurant. Unless, of course, you enjoy culinary disappointment, flavorless seafood, and a complete disregard for your taste buds. But hey, at least it made for a memorable experience--one I'll be recounting for years to come, albeit with a shudder and a warning. A decent view of the bay and great dog friendly outdoor seating are marred by mediocre food and typical high beach prices. 1st and 2nd earned stars -- Neat location in Baytowne Wharf; dog friendly location We visited the Baytowne Wharf and needed someplace to eat that was dog friendly. Most restaurants had outside seating, which was perfect for a family of 3 + a dog. We made our way down to the more "colorful" end of the wharf and found the marina view restaurants. There were three of them clustered together, and after running into a woman who asked about our dog AND recommended Hammerheads, we settled on the joint for lunch. 3rd earned star -- Decent service Our server was scared of dogs, which we always try and be sensitive to. We agreed to keep the dog on a tight leash so she'd be comfortable while we also got a nice view of the Baytowne Marina (which we never actually visited). We got soft drinks to go with lunch (no beers for us this particular lunch outing), and we put in our orders. Overall, our server was really good. We made the visit with the dog work, and she actually became more comfortable with him as the meal went on. She kept our drinks topped off and did extra little things to help with our daughter too (e.g. bringing a little bonus pack of Oreos to go with her kid's lunch order). 4th and 5th lost star -- Mediocre food at high beach prices We enjoyed the breeze of the fans in the open dining room, the great music from a guy off to the side just singing for 1-2 of the restaurants on this end of the wharf, and the view of the yachts from the Baytowne Marina. Our food arrived after a bit, and, as I feared, it was mediocre. My wife had crab cakes that she claimed were really good, but she only ate one. My daughter's kid's shrimp basket was plentiful but the shrimp looked a bit chewy. I ordered a group sandwich, grilled, and the bun was cold / not toasted, and the "medium" sauce I ordered looked like clarified butter with some seasoning salt included. The fish itself wasn't terrible, but it was definitely over cooked. Combined with the strange tequila aftertaste I kept getting in my soft drink plastic cup, I chalked the entire experience up to ambiance over food quality. I think we spent about $60 - $70 total which is typical in these areas around beaches, but, still -- the food needs to be better. In summary, I'd give it a try again if the place were busy, but, honestly -- the class of restaurant this far into the wharf started to go from clean / respectable to tourist trap. You're going for the bayside experience at this point in your visit to Baytowne Wharf, so -- keep some perspective when visiting Hammerheads or any of the other places nearby. read more
