Having stayed at boutique hotels here and in the UK, the skimpy breakfast option provided was disappointing.....well, it was nonexistent. Cereal and fruit were empty. I don't expect a European spread, but a simple continental breakfast was, in fact, part of the reservation. We finally just left. Post-survey, nobody followed up. Customer service was so terrible (other than the people working the front desk). The front desk team was helpful and professional. So, clean room and front desk team was great, comfort and customer service were nonexistent. Not a good experience AT ALL.

It has a mixture of contemporary flair and 1950s retro. I hope they continue to keep some of the 50s style and furniture. The rooms are a good size and have a small refrigerator and microwave. The prices are reasonable and much less than the B&Bs in town, so a nice financial break. There are plenty of places to eat in town and there's always the truck stop Sting Rays just a few miles south on Rt 13 for breakfast. The motel is very close to Rt 13 but I did not hear the traffic at all. The grounds surrounding the motel are peaceful with pines and rhododendrons. There's a Food Lion / liquor store just across Rt 13. I'm hoping the couple succeeds in refurbishing this classic motel and creating a very nice play to stay.

Each room has it's own mini kitchen area where you can prepare simple meals. Coffee maker/toaster to help with breakfast. We often pick the room in the back because it has a screened patio so we can eat outside if we like (there's another picnic table outside for all to use if desired). They have charcoal grills in the shed (BYO charcoal). They have a stainless steel fish cleaning table (with wood boards) to help you clean your catch. The hose reaches the table easy to help was everything clean. They have a fish freezer in the shed to help keep your catch good for travel home. BYO freezer bags. They sell huge bags of cube ice for your cooler for $2 (all in the shed as well). Flounder fishing can be great there, especially mid to late April and May. Current owner, Katrina, has been very helpful with our stays in the past. She lives close to the house and can help keep your stay there going good if you need help with anything there at the house. Katrina knows the nearby communities and restaurants and can help point you in the right direction if you ask.

I daresay our experience at Colonial Manor goes beyond even those scant bouts of exemplary service. Our accommodations were delightful, the atmosphere is second-to-none, and don't even get me started on what an incredible deal it was (I won't belabor the subject but it's well below the rate of the industry standard for far above the level of service which these establishments would provide). We felt very welcome, and were quite pleased with the degree of flexibility in which our stay was tailored to our needs. We did not worry once during the trip as we felt ourselves to be in expert hands. Our gracious hosts, themselves the embodiment of southern charm and hospitality, provided us with meals I'll never forget and with such immersive and knowledgeable stories that they will be forever used as a benchmark for others to live up to. We have since returned home, only to find ourselves utterly spellbound and captivated by the experience. How often is it that you return from a vacation truly relaxed and refreshed anymore? not entirely experienced with the whole B&B thing, but i thought CMI was a good start, in a small…read morewharf town of onancock. i stayed for 2 nights at this quaint establishment and had a much-needed relaxing time. the innkeeper was accommodating on our rather late check-in and encouraged us to explore the house. room 4 (our room) was on the 2nd floor and located across the hall from a pretty diverse library, ornate w/ antiquities. actually, the ENTIRE inn is decorated w/ original oil paintings, antiques, and various knickknacks. room was accommodating and fit our needs. the host (linda's mother) makes scrumptious pastries for breakfast but she forgot the food allergies i had initially stated prior to arriving (for god sakes, no pineapple or meat please). but we never left hungry. ever. my favorite area of the inn was the enclosed front patio. though it is not air-conditioned and does get quite warm, there are patio furniture, and several board game tables to spend lazy summer nights playing w/ friends and family. for the price in comparison to other B&Bs in the relative vicinity, it was a nice stay.

I wrote a letter to the atty general of the county and this is what I wrote including the link to their video.. PLEASE takes this seriously and take action. This a company that created a YouTube video, that said it was providing housing for the homeless in your county in the city of Cape Charles, and it is not, not even with charging $374 a night do they donate any of the proceeds to the homeless (no mention of that.) What particularly angers me, is that the very cheap housing that they bought up COULD have been used to house the homeless but instead used for their profit making venture. Please have someone better yet the attorney general of your county, write a letter to them, telling them you don't have any objection to them running their hotel, but they can NOT claim that they are helping the homeless if they are NOT, their unhappy circumstances should not be exploited. They are located about 6 minutes from downtown Cape Charles, easy to find, and we received an email and text with all the info we needed for our stay including wifi, check-in and out time, policy on pets (they are welcome in certain homes only) and the code for the door. Everything is well-loved and taken care of here. Our room was tiny, but included a full bathroom with shower, a sitting area with a TV, wifi, a small kitchenette with coffee provided and a small fridge and microwave with a sink and full assortment of kitchen items like bowls, plates, silverware, etc. We spent most of our time in town walking, shopping and eating, but the owners are always on site, very personable and friendly, and always have a fire going in the main area at night to hang out if you'd like to socialize. The bed was super comfy, the room was spotless and well appointed with towels, soap, toilet paper, etc. We didn't want for anything and it was easygoing and stress free the entire weekend! I couldn't speak highly enough about this gem. So cute. They do have a small venue area for micro weddings or events, I could see renting this out for your small wedding and everyone gets their own little house for the weekend, how cute!

The greeting we received from the friendly bearded gentlemen at the gate station set the positive tone and made us smile. The sites are relatively flat and took minimal effort to level our camper. Good water pressure and a solid Wi-Fi signal. Our initial site had a view of the pond and the bay. Unfortunately, there was a small electrical issue the first morning of our visit. I called maintenance and within three minutes they arrived and began trouble shooting the issue. Very friendly and professional. The team (Cody & Steve) worked to identify the issue (faulty breaker inside the travel trailer parked beside us). We understood their frustration and offered to move sites if that would work. The team quickly got us a new site in a different loop and within 30 minutes we were packed and set up on the new site, which had amazing views of the bay. The maintenance team stopped back that evening and the next day to check on us, which was very impressive. Amenities were great from the adult only pool beside the water and the family pools to the fun activities planned each day. The general store was well stocked and the café had a nice range of menu items, including huge scoops of Hershey's ice cream. The only minor minus we encountered is the bayside beach is lackluster and not inviting to lounge on, but the pool made up for that. There is a shuttle that will take you into town and runs on a regular/as needed basis. Walt is the man in the shuttle and is more of your personal tour guide. Give him a call and he will take you where you need to go! Overall, it was an amazing visit and we will definitely be back and hope to see the amazing staff again next year.

This was our family's first trip to Sun Outdoors Virginia. We originally booked an 8-night stay but…read moredecided to leave a day early because we had run out of things to do. The campground is in a fairly secluded location, so entertainment options are limited, especially on hot days. Cape Charles is about 15 minutes away and is a quaint, charming town with a few boutiques and three ice cream shops. Many of the shops and restaurants have limited hours, and the dining options tend to be more upscale than family-friendly, which made it a little harder to find meals that appealed to our younger kids. Virginia Beach is about an hour away if you're looking for more activities, but keep in mind you'll pay about $15 each way to cross the bridge-tunnel, adding roughly $30 in tolls to every round trip. The campground itself is very large. Our kids loved the pools, although they close at 8:00 p.m. The jumping pillows were also a big hit, but they have very little shade, making them difficult to enjoy during the hottest part of the day. They also close at 8:00 p.m. The private beach is a nice feature. Since it's on the bay, the water is shallow and calm with no waves, making it great for younger children. However, the beach could benefit from more regular grooming. There was quite a bit of debris in the sand, and daily raking like many public beaches do would make a noticeable improvement. One concern we had was the lack of rule enforcement. Staff members were frequently driving around in golf carts, but we rarely saw them addressing unsafe behavior. There were many clearly underage kids driving golf carts and riding around at high speeds with little regard for pedestrians or cyclists. My husband was nearly hit by an intoxicated golf cart driver while riding his bike, and my son was knocked completely off his bike by a child on a motor scooter. We also witnessed a group of young girls parked beside the pool fence openly smoking marijuana. While I don't expect an overly strict campground, a greater focus on safety would have made us feel much more comfortable. Our campsite was clean, level, and well maintained. One thing we found odd was that there were no fire rings. It appeared they may have been removed, which led many campers to create their own fire pits directly on their sites. That didn't seem like the safest solution. Depending on your site's location, mosquitoes and other bugs can also be quite bad, particularly near taller grass or standing water. The multiple dog parks were a nice amenity. However, one of the waste bag stations remained empty until our sixth day, and many owners apparently didn't bring their own bags. As a result, there was quite a bit of dog waste left throughout the park. We also noticed several people leaving their dogs unattended inside the dog parks while they returned to their campsites. The on-site café was convenient and offered a good option for grabbing a meal without having to cook, especially during the hottest part of the day. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Sun Outdoors Virginia, and I would still recommend it to others, particularly families with younger children looking for a relaxing camping trip. For our family, though, we found ourselves getting bored after about five days due to the limited nearby attractions. If we return to the area, we'd likely choose a campground closer to Virginia Beach where there are more activities to keep the kids entertained.

Our room was pretty and the sleep number bed was sooo comfortable. I think there is only one room available so not appropriate if you have a group. It is just over a mile to the beach but it was unfortunately too cold and rainy to really enjoy it. On the property there is a well lit path through the forested area that surrounds the house to a nearby marshy waterway. Nice scenery. Lots of plants, flowers and green space surround the house. I saw a hummingbird flitting around the yard! What a bonus!! There were some shops and restaurants for dinner a few miles away but we ventured further to Gwynn Island and had delicious food, especially the shrimp and crabcake, at Hole In The Wall which has a great view over the water. It was cloudy the whole time we were there but on nights with clear skies I'm sure the star gazing is epic. You definitely feel like you are out in the country. You order your breakfast the night before so that what you want for breakfast is ready when you choose. I loved having a dip in the outdoor (but under the front porch roof) hot tub before heading to bed. There are several steps up to the front porch and to the guestroom itself so if you have mobility issues it is something to consider. Breakfast was hot, delicious and beautifully served right on time. We really enjoyed ourselves and hope to stay here again sometime. On a side note there is a cool old cemetery nearby that includes headstones dating back to the mid-1800s if you are in to that kind of history. We found it very interesting.

Let's start with the good. This campground is located about 5 miles down a heavily wooded road to…read morethe point you will begin to think you've gone the wrong way. At night, these woods can honestly, be a little creepy, but they're still very beautiful. There is an abundance of wildlife to see as well - especially deer - so be careful when driving, no matter the time of day or night. We also saw foxes, raccoons, possums, deer of all ages and genders - including two bucks fighting during one experience, baby/tiny crabs, live oysters, etc. So if you're looking for wildlife, this is definitely a great spot to find and see it! On the weekends they do breakfast and lunches at the lodge. Our first Saturday here, we were unaware of this and headed right upstairs to the billiards room. One of the female staff came up and got us to see if we were hungry. She went out of her way to get us and that definitely left a wonderful impression. The lunch was great, that seems to be an every Saturday affair which is super nice. Breakfast seems to be every Sunday morning starting at 9am. The bad part about this is that there's no notices or announcements or anything to let you know of these things going on. So that's a small negative. I feel like maybe this should be included with your check in package so you're aware of these get together going on. Now, speaking of the billiards/game room, this is actually where we spent a majority of our time. There are two pool tables, 2 table tennis set ups, and 2 air hockey tables. One of the pool tables and one of the air hockey tables do not work. The one air hockey table has been broken since we first came here. The pool table however was damaged by children on our last Saturday at this campground. All the games are free to play and you're unsupervised. The stuff is old and it's not in perfect shape but it's there and it worked. So it was so sad to see that a family came in there and allowed this destruction. When we called the rangers, they were so upset to hear about it. I hope that they're able to put up a camera, at least at the entrance of the lodge so they know whose coming and going from now on. We have learned that this campground does not get much funding and frankly, it shows. This campground though really deserves more funding. The staff are great and the park has so much potential. It's beautiful here! Unlike what you might expect from pictures or map view, there is no beach or swimming available unless the pool is open. The "beaches" are more along the lines of swamp land and marshes more then anything. You can go oyster fishing here as there are tons of them! Fishing is best to do during high tide only. There is a fishing pier that is kind of lopsided but seems otherwise okay. There's also a boat ramp and appears to have once been floating docks. The boat ramp can only be used during high tide because otherwise it's just a mud pit with absolutely no water. The floating docks have been blocked off as they're just a complete mess. I'm not sure if a storm damaged them or what but they're in awful shape. There are two playground at this campground and I wouldn't trust my kids on either of them. One is by the pool and then another is by the cabins. Swings are held up by rope or are broken due to age, wood looks old and discerning, just for example. It just looks dangerous and run down. There's no volleyball set up and the mini golf is a disaster. The carpets are missing on most of them, they're all straight shots, and most of the side rails are non-existent. We never would have known it was closed if we hadn't come across the fallen over, hand written sign that just sits propped up against one of the holes. We had mentioned in the office in front of a male staffer that we had intended to play mini golf but he had made no mention of it being closed or that it was in basically completely unusable condition. As for the pool, it was offseason so it was closed but it was still full of pool water which considering the weather, if it's not emptied and winterized soon, there won't be a pool next year. Moving around the campground, most of the lots have no power (as in the power isn't working or shut off) so you can't park there. I'd say this goes for about half the camp sites. As for full hookups, there's maybe 6 sites total. All the rest are just electric and water hook ups. The good news though is that a majority of the sites are pretty level and there are several sites in the wooded area that are just gorgeous! Over all, the scenery is beautiful, the wild life is amazing, the staff is very friendly, but the campground could use a lot of work. The campground is run down, out dated, and just needs some upgrades and maintenance done. I wouldn't recommend this park at this time. We really hope that they get funding and can improve the place because we'd love to come back in a few years and see it doing better.

Many site's hookups are broken (like 50% or more), and their best full hookup sites were flooded to the point of being closed. Seems like it was once a great spot and has declined in the last 20 years. There are also *lots* of bugs. We were there in October and got eaten alive - so I can't imagine what it's like when mosquitoes and flies are in full swing. There's also not much to do in the immediate area - you have to drive at least 30 minutes away to do pretty much anything. So it's not a great spot if kids are involved. The guy working the gatehouse called us while we were en route, and was palpably irritated that we wouldn't be arriving until 5:30 because he usually leaves at 5. Really? All of that said, if you're after a sleepy, quiet place and aren't bothered by biting insects, it could be for you.
