Overall, we had a good experience with Hampton Inn and Suites! Our intake person was extremely friendly, she made us feel at home! The staff was just as kind. Thank you! The gentleman in charge of the breakfast area was spot on! He kept the area clean & made sure the food served was plentiful & fresh! The bed was comfortable, pillows were too soft & small for our king size bed. We're thankful for our air conditioner functioning well in an extremely hot weather conditions but wow, it was loud. Our only complaint will be the lack of luggage racks as we waited over 30 minutes upon arrival. At our departure, we gave up on the wait (38 mins) and decided to take our luggage down in 2 trips. Hotel is on the older side. Some of the area on the side of the bathroom sink were a little dirty. The staff were very friendly and accommodating throughout my long stay here.Price was a little higher due to the demand at the time. The gym had basic dumbbells and cardio equipment. This is a nice hotel. Plenty of parking - nice open and clean lobby space - and great rooms. The room was spacious with a large sink area outside the shower/toilet area which was behind a closed door while the sink was more open to the room in an adjoining open nook. When you first enter there is a bar/counter space with a coffee/tea maker and small fridge. There was a sitting area with a couch as well as a desk and a king bed in our room with chargers on both sides and plugs for electronics (not all hotels are updated to have these on each side of the bed for both people). Lots of tv channels (HBO is one) on a nice new updated tv. Staff were very friendly and helped me with a heavy bag out to my car because I had an ankle sprain I was nursing while staying here. Location is great right off Benn's Church Blvd near to gas stations, food, pharmacies and a few grocery stores (Farm Fresh and Foodlion). It's also about 8 minutes from the main street in Smithfield (Church St.) which has a ton of antique shops, the bakery, Wharf Hill, Smithfield Station, Windsor Castle Park (my favorite park). Great service, friendly staff, clean rooms, and relatively quiet for being just off the main highway. I typically stay here when I'm Smithfield as my go to. Only complaints would be the size of the gym, really slow elevators and man are the doors loud when they close! All in all, a solid option if you need a place to lay your head in Smithfield. read more

I am a light sleeper. So light, my ice maker wakes me up. The faint sound of a ceiling fan. My phone vibrating. (Thank God for night mode.) That said, if you are like me, staying at this Hampton Inn might drive you crazy. The mini fridge was humming like it was about to blow. I thought of unplugging it, but I wasn't clear it was the only noise. The HVAC was also having a cow. It was the only view outside my window. And, I eventually determined it was louder than the fridge. So I got a new room, where the fridge was loud again but only sporadically. This place also desperately needs a renovation. Staff was nice and fresh cookies were bomb, though. read more

Better quality than Hilton Garden Inn. The decor was updated and befitting a Hilton brand: the lobby the inviting, has coffee at all hours and the two-story lounge/breakfast area is equipped with comfortable and stylish chairs and bench seats. Half sized fridge in the room and microwave are also convenient for those staying more than a few nights. Bathroom was high quality sink area, plentiful towels and good quality Neutrogena products. Room styling and comfort were great (very restful beds, duvet covers cleaned daily, plenty of pillows)! Full size desk and free wifi allow for easy work, if necessary. Comfortable additional chairs in the room for either watching television or working at the desk. Dense curtains effectively block out street lights and provide good privacy. Overall, high quality materials and peaceful, stylish room. Great front desk service too. Manager knew who i was on sight after my check in, and made great local recommendations. read more

I travel for work constantly and ALWAYS stay at Hampton Inns. They are generally clean and have a friendly staff. My experience at the Smithfield location couldn't have been more opposite. When I show up and walk into my room, I am overwhelmed by the smell of smoke. I saw a tip saying they still allow smoking rooms? What is this the 1800's? But, hey, that's their choice! So I walk down and ask if there's another room I could stay in that wouldn't leave me smelling like ash for my meeting the next day, I was informed by the very rude front desk person that they were booked completely.... On a Wednesday night in Smithfield, Virginia. (I still don't know if I believe that) So after traveling for 3 days straight, I go back up to my smokey room, take a shower and crawl into bed. As I get into the sheets, I realize, these people must have been smoking in the bed??? Because the sheets smell worse than the room. There's no way they just didn't change the sheets, I think to myself. So I call down to see if they can even get me a fresh set of sheets and I will put them on. But no, the very rude front desk person I mentioned before claims to be THE ONLY PERSON IN THE ENTIRE HOTEL. Anyways, changes need to be made at this location. And until they are, I would avoid it like the plague. And I am Yelp Elite. And what good is that, if I can't help my fellow Yelpers avoid the same horrors I've experienced? read more

Extremely comfy hotel. Bed was great, cookies and coffee all morning and night is a plus, and the good front desk service was greatly appreciated. Satellite was patchy during a heavy rainstorm but other than that no complaints. I only stayed for a night so I really didn't get to see much else than my room. I had a unique experience to spend multiple days at local hotels, and compare them to one another. Of the many hotels I stayed at Hampton was the second most expensive. It started with a booking issue, I used a third party website and pre paid. An error by the check in clerk made me have to call this third party, standing out in the rain as you get no cell service in the lobby or beneath the parking canopy. Only after a superior arrived did she realize the clerks mistake and check us in. The beds were not comfortable, the pillows were not good. The television is large but far from the bed in a king room. I had to purchase a pillow for myself and my wife at a store. Of all the hotels I stayed at this was the best shower, and second best breakfast. read more

Stayed at the Smithfield Hampton Inn for a wedding on Memorial Day weekend. We were told we had to book for a minimum stay of 2 nights which was disappointing, but this was the only decent (seemed to be) hotel in the area. Arrived to our room and the room seemed to be clean. My family and I showered and left for the wedding, returned back that evening and hopped in bed. I felt something crawling on my arm, I was hoping it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Unfortunately it was. A BED BUG! A baby bed bug at that. I jumped up and told my parents to check their bed, and there was an adult bed bug crawling up their comforter. DISGUSTING! We called the front desk and the lady came up to our room and took a look at the bugs. She offered to move our room and refund our money for the stay. My parents stayed and moved rooms but I decided to pack my things and drive 4 hours back home. I would never step foot in that hotel again. We both filled out an incident report and was told someone from Hampton would be in touch with us within a week or two to check up on us. Of course we haven't heard a word from them. VERY disappointing! I will never give Hampton or Hilton my business ever again. read more

My family needed a room on short notice because we worked all day and came home to no running water due to construction workers cutting our water line. We were made aware that there were only smoking rooms available, but given the short notice, I was okay accepting a smoking room. However, we were placed in a room that looked like it had not been cleaned in some time, and it smelled like an ashtray. We could get over the smell, but the filth was like nothing I've ever seen, and our family travels frequently. Dust covered the furniture, and it appeared that some white substance was splattered and dried all over the exterior of the refrigerator, bedside table, and headboards. There were also visible handprints all over the headboards. The desk was greasy, and the furniture was significantly stained. The remote and the informational cards were both sticky. I chose this hotel over the motel right down the street from my home and half the price because of the ratings, and I greatly regret it. When I called the front desk to tell them about the room, they said they would send the manager, but the attendant arrived with a key for the room next door. When I pointed out the dust, she replied, "that's the part they don't clean." I was utterly stunned at the response and the fact that the manager couldn't be bothered to address the situation. The new room smelled better and appeared somewhat cleaner, but after seeing the filth next door, I had to question the cleanliness of the new space. My daughter and I ended up taking a shower and leaving because we were so uncomfortable and dissatisfied with the lack of response from management. This place has tainted the Hilton name for us. Pretty nice hotel but not great. I'm here for business for my second time and it's been ok. The rooms are very clean and the beds are soft; not junky at all which is good...the bad...I would have to say that the "hot" portion of the morning breakfast could be a lot better. Not sure where the pre made omelets came from but they're bad. They do have a other items that are fine. I'd give them another star but the hot tub has been broken for a very long time; apparently well before my first trip here this past spring. Needless to say that it is a huge disappointment and if it weren't for my company sending me here I would go elsewhere based on that alone. read more

We stayed in a "handicap" room. The room itself was pretty. The shower was designed for someone who is in a wheel chair. The shower stall was missing an end cap to keep water from going out on the floor. There was mold in the bottom of the shower. We were on the first floor (room 125). We parked on the east side of the building. We observed thousands (no exaggeration) of generally red ants around the outside entrance door, and all over the sidewalk. We did not want to put any luggage on the sidewalk or the asphalt. We still got some ants on us (no big deal). There was a couple with a motorcycle parked near us. I mentioned the ants to them. I had visions of them riding on the road and suddenly getting bitten by ants. Their reaction to all of the ants that they could see was "wow." They said that the ants would blow off their bike at highway speed. On check-out, I told Michelle Chapman about the ants. I told her to have housekeeping mix a paste of borax and sugar. Ants will harvest and feed it to the colony queen. It kills the queen, ants that eat it, and causes a collapse of the ant colony. She told me that Terminix treats the building every 2 weeks. She then asked me to e-mail her. I worked for one of the top hotels in the world. I never asked a guest to "e-mail" me. Another guest during our check-out heard me. She said that there were ants in her room and that the room "smelled." I would have asked for a different room. The person at the front desk when we checked-in was very nice. Smithfield, I still can't believe there's a Hampton Inn in Smithfield. We normally stay in Hampton at the Hilton Garden Inn but they didn't have any rooms available so we stayed here. This Inn was so nice, not as busy as the Hilton and that's what we needed. We were able to relax and let the kids go to the pool without getting pushed around by other kids or adults. The Gym has three machines in there but it's something so no complaints there. I think we will stay at this location when we visit family from now on. read more

Why are there even hotels that still allow smoking? Our room was SO unacceptably overwhelmed with the combined stench of old ciggs and horrible perfume scented febreeze. I have stood here on two occasions, so this review is based on both of those. The first time I had no issues, the room was clean and spacious. I had no issues with the air conditioner or tv. The second time I stood there, the room seemed a little dated. The carpet seemed dirty and the room was humid. I took me over 5 hours to get the temperature in the room from 85 to 72. It was like staying in a sauna. They keep the location clean, cookies in the afternoon and they have a good buffet style breakfast. They offer waffles which for me is a plus. It is close to many of the food offerings in the city and the CVS is not too far. read more

First let me say that everyone at the hotel was super friendly. However Brandy at the front desk went out of her way on a very hot and busy day to find a room for my family and I on a last minute need to extend our stay in Smithfield. With graduation and a wedding scheduled we were looking at the possibililty of having to move to another hotel possibly as far away as Newport News/Hampton however Brandy went above and beyond to confirm reservations and find us a room. The room was a smoking room but we were given a very fair rate by Brandy and we had an enjoyable stay! Good job! read more
