I have been here several times and my usual is the Spicy Pork Soup Dumplings. This time, we got the sticky rice in banana leaf, egg custard bao and spicy pork bao in addition to the spicy pork soup dumplings and everything was phenomenal! My favorite of the bunch was the sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf - I had it with the chilli oil and it was such a satisfying meal in itself. I think it would be great if you are under the weather and want a pick me up. The egg custard bao was really delicious as well. I wasn't a fan of the spicy pork bao buns - the filling was too less and at the same time the chunks of pork were too big. The dim sum here was a miss for me. It still tastes like Chinese food, but having tried dim sum in many places before, I felt that the food here was lacking in flavor. They also stopped making a good portion of the dishes that they show in the photo menu. The only ones they still offer are listed in the paper ordering menu, which was disappointing because we wanted several dishes shown on the photo menu. My favorite dish would be their pork soup dumplings. The egg tarts weren't very crispy and the pickled garlic cucumber didn't taste as good. Ordered takeout from here recently and I really enjoyed the dry pot style fish - it comes with a small carton of rice and a level 2 is still fairly mild in terms of spice level. Their spiciness scale is not like Han Dynasty, where even a level 1 is painful sometimes haha! The beef chow fun was honestly not great. It was extremely salty and I had a sneaking suspicion it would be even at first glance because the noodles were so dark in color. After getting delivery for years, I finally dropped in for a quick lunch on Saturday around 12:30 pm. I was quickly seated by a warm and friendly host. As a Chinese American (2nd generation born in USA), I have a decent handle on what to look for in a restaurant. While there are aspects of traditional Chinese restaurants at Dim Sum House, this is definitely far more accessible to customers who might be less accustomed. For example, you need to order tea if you want it (not automatically served), the service is very attentive and helpful (a rarity in many a Chinatown restaurant), and there aren't any typos on the menu! As a customer with a gluten sensitivity, it's a blessing that they are so good at labeling the menu and offering options. I did need to double check with one of the servers who brought a dish with dipping sauce and he did in fact have to switch it out for a GF sauce. So for the very gluten sensitive/allergic, be mindful and kindly remind them. This place used to be really good. I recently went a group of 5. We got the worst service I've seen in recent years. We didn't get enough dipping sauces for the table and a tiny bowl of rice. The server looked uncomfortable when we asked for more. They never refilled our drinks and didn't give us napkins until we asked. Also the fish and chips tofu entree had too much salt this time and we wanted to send it back but decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Then they had the audacity to tack on 20% tip. Maybe this is why the service was so bad. If the servers are already getting 20% then they have no reason to provide even average service. While there's a wide variety of options, this also means that none of their cuisines have been perfected. I've previously gone for dimsum, and while their dimsum isn't bad, it also wouldn't be my first choice. This time I got mapo tofu for takeout. It was not bad, but had more chili oil than I would've liked and tasted very different from mapo tofu I've had elsewhere (lots of lemongrass?). It doesn't come with rice, but the side order of rice is about two bowls worth for $1. If you're around this area, I think sangkee on 34th street is worth the walk for for better Chinese food. read more

It's time for an updated review. I came here before the name changed. The decor and everything remains about the same. I came here recently with a friend. Our waitress was attentive and helpful, especially when we had to send stuff back. First , she told me that I ordered the worst dish at the restaurant, the asparagus, which to her is so bland. It was. It tasted like no salt was ever added. My friend's dish came out spicy when we asked for no spicy. We also got salt and pepper salt, which was tender but could use more salt. My son didn't try the dumplings or bao buns, though. The food was served in a timely fashion and we were able to dig in. The dumplings were fresh and juicy. The Bao Buns were pillowy soft and the meat was juicy and tender. Would definitely order them again. My son was a little overwhelmed by portion size of the General Tso's Chicken and barely made a dent in it. We had to get a to-go box for it. The waitress was extremely nice and was there when we needed her. The ambiance was nice. It was loud, but that was to be expected. Not too loud that we couldn't hold a conversation with one another. Dim Sum House in University City has been one of my go to dinner spots for several years. I recently visited the Rittenhouse location when I was in the area with friends. Great restaurant for a casual dim sum night. They have great Happy hour (5-7pm) deals ($5 or $6 dumplings/other small plates) and a few drink specials. The staff is attentive - your water glass will never be empty! The food is high quality dim sum (loved the soup dumplings and pork buns), and with the happy hour deals you'll leave with a full stomach and a pretty full wallet. I will say that the larger entrees are a little pricey (~$25), so I stuck to the small plates. We are back in Philly and wanted to give this place a second chance as last time there was a gee things that they needed better. Inside has a full bar and fish tanks for the freah seafood. Maleah, our server, was very helpful in choosing the best dishes. Dim sum is meant to be shared with everyone and I think Jane G's Dim Sum House does a great job with the menu and space to make it feel comfortable for everyone.
