I came here over 10 years ago when I lived off 3rd Avenue and Camelback. They were the 1st sushi place to introduce me to fresh wasabi (it'll change your sushi experience). My car was having issues, set to go for repairs Friday. Thursday had to do some runs. Lyft to do my runs and I'm like I'm getting out the house. Sushi sounds like the plan. I pull up friendly Yelp and look to see if they are still around and they are. Lyft over and it doesn't disappoint, stellar sushi experience but it is on the higher cost side. I ordered the sea bass sashimi special, my favorite the cucumber special roll (just thought about it, this is the 1st place I had that roll). I order it at various places now. But what made my night was the Japanese old fashion. I'm going to see if I can find the simple syrup combo & make this at home it was amazing. I want to go back just for that flipping drink. My wife and I celebrated our 24th Anniversary and decided on coming here. This was our first visit. This is authentic Japanese cuisine and every dish is perfection. We ordered a lot between us two, we wanted to indulge for dinner. Ambience inside is quaint with dim lighting. Large TV flat screen showing the Lakers playing the Celtics. Lakers got crushed sadly. The hostess, the servers, and the entire staff were exceedingly accommodating. They refilled my Ginger Ale without me asking, very nice and appreciated. The have a very extensive alcohol selection. Everything that was served to us was masterfully created, taste was a taste bud paradise. So I'm born and raised in Hawaii, I know there's mediocre sushi and than there are places like Hana Japanese Eatery. This place is like eating sushi in Hawaii, super fresh and delicious. I came here many years ago and forgot about this place until recently. I don't know why I never came back because this place is AMAZING! Our favorites were the oysters shooters and the cod. That was probably one of the best prepared cod I have ever had! I can't say enough positive remarks about Hana after taking my husband here for his birthday. Having never been, the staff was thoughtful in guiding us through sake and food suggestions. We went on a Tuesday night and perhaps a much slower evening but the level of attention we received from Lynn (owner/chef) was unparalleled. We learned about sake, ordered specials and had an amazing evening of conversation. It is clear this locally owned restaurant takes quality seriously, with meticulous plating and tons of fresh seafood items. For the past 13-ish years, my Yelp buddy Monica O. and I have had the joy (and occasional challenge) of co-hosting the International Supper Club Unofficial Yelp Event (ISCUYE). In all that time, we've only returned to a handful of restaurants--maybe 3 to 5--because, you know, the world is big, and our stomachs are only so large. Hana happens to be one of those special few. I can't talk about Hana without tipping my hat to Mike O. (check out his reviews too!), who first introduced ISCUYE to this gem. The first time we visited, Hana was half the size, didn't have a liquor license, and thanks to Mike, I spent more money than I ever have at an ISCUYE event--because he had us ordering half the menu. No regrets. Fast forward to last fall... our second visit. I walk in and see someone who looks like Mike O. But I brush it off, assuming my brain is just inserting him into the scene for nostalgia's sake. (He lives on the East coast now).... Turns out, nope--I was looking at Mike O. himself, sitting right in our ISC spot like it was meant to be. What a reunion! That night, we also met the owner (Lori?), who helped prepare our meal. Since then, I've been back a couple of times, and she still remembers me and my kiddo. I love a place where everybody knows your name--and they're always glad you came! CHEERS! Central Phoenix is a sushi lover's playground, with at least three top-tier spots that deliver on quality and creativity. But Hana? Hana sits comfortably at the top of my list. Came here tonight with my boyfriend, we're 19 and look really young to give an idea. Took a while to be seated but once they sat us they ignored us for a WHILE. We visibly saw an older couple who was seated after us and they took their order before us. Once they took our order they ignored us the whole time. Even when they brought us food they didn't ask how everything was or if we needed anything. They never once checked in until we needed the bill. By that point we had visibly been done eating for 10 minutes just sitting. The restaurant wasn't crazy busy either and they were consistently checking on all the other tables. I think they thought we wouldn't tip well because we were young. The food was the worst Japanese food I've had in my life. The sashimi was bad, it tasted like it really bad quality fish, the rolls were bland, the salmon nigiri tasted fatty and weird. I love sushi and eat it so much and I didn't think sushi could ever taste this bad. I did get clams and those were actually really good, I would order again. Then the bill came and it was $85. For the worst sushi we've ever had. Despite how bad the food and service was he tipped $30 (35%) to prove a point. Any customer walking through the door could be a well tipping one and to not judge by looks. A lot of younger people don't tip well, that's doesn't mean all of us don't. As a restaurant you should be treating everyone fairly and to the best of your ability. It was so clear every other table was getting paid attention to and we were ignored. Never coming back. Came here about 5PM on a Sunday and there was almost no one in. Server recommended the sea bass crudo which was very tasty. Then ordered sashimi of Octopus, Tuna and Salmon. This might satisfy you if you've never ventured out of Peoria. For the rest of you, this will be highly disappointing. I got the shrimp tempura and the caterpillar roll. Both were mainly rice and had minuscule amounts of other ingredients. It did not satisfy in the least bit. I also shared agadashi tofu and the edamame with my friend. They were fine. The tofu was not as fried as other restaurants make it out to be. But with regards to the sushi, I have major buyer's remorse. I just think it was garbage and overpriced for the low quality that you got. Our waitress was very nice, though, so that's why I'm giving two stars instead of one. read more

We had a pleasant dinner on Sat Sept 10th. Upon our arrival, customers were being seated. There were only a few tables left 10 mins after opening. I can't say much besides what has been written prior regarding their fresh, authentic dishes. To drink I picked the chilled Blue Hue 3 oz sake. Smooth, a tad dry and delicious! I really enjoyed it cold and staying cool due to being served in a chilled shooter glass. The tempura with light and crisp batter was very good. I love the shisho leaf. The delicate green takes on a different flavor when prepared tempura style. My favorite chawan mushi was fair tasting but small in size for $16. On the way home, I was disappointed in reading Mike O's review on Yelp saying he paid $12 for the exact item just seven days prior. Oh well, this timing is the story of my life. Ha ha! After a long day in Sedona, we found this incredible Japanese restaurant in Phoenix. Not sure what the negative reviews are talking about but we thought the food was incredible. The freshness and quality of the fish was outstanding. The salmon and toro were so yummy. The Unagi was perfectly done. The tempura was incredible. The shrimp tempura was amazing and the vegetable tempura was also spot on. The batter was so light and airy to drip it in their tempura sauce was awesome. Tough to find incredible tempura nowadays. We also ordered excellent udon and steak but were too hungry and excited about this place that we forgot to take pictures. This is excellent all around Japanese restaurant in our opinion because they have both excellent sushi and cook food. Not everyone is a huge sushi fan but they could also choose excellent cooked Japanese food also. It was a perfect ending to a long day !! read more

Went tonight with my daughter who's visiting from Albuquerque. Always trying to find a good sushi spot in Phoenix. Can never find a place with excellent fish. Hana does a good job on the fish selection. Ordered the tuna and hamachi sashimi. Needless to say the fish was outstanding. Also ordered the salmon sushi and was equally good. Ordered three rolls, the Catapillar was good and tasty. The Vegas and Baked Salmon rolls were ok both of us agreed. Next time thinking of just ordering the nigiri sushi and sashimi. Yeah. I just can't help myself, can I? So this one is actually for a dinner I had way back in September (that I never got around to reviewing), but I still felt obligated to write this post regardless just to PSA people away from this place. That being said, even though Eater has always been the IGN of gastronomy, whoever it was that recommended this place in their sushi listings still needs to be fired (I hope they are already). So you could already guess that everything is tasteless, but let's go further than that. Let's look at the tamago. The tamagoyaki is supposed to be the true display of skill of any sushi chef (everyone who watched Jiro's would know), taking many more years to master after having gotten quite familiar with the fishes. The technique is quite complex and the timing has to be exact. There is a reason the most expensive omakase provider in all of Chicago prides himself on his special version of the tamago. So if this display of skill turns out like a very overcooked fried egg with ample brown spots on barely-held-together rice, we've got a problem. It's not even a good egg either. I-is this sh*t from Walmart?! Oh gosh... And the Great Value-ness doesn't stop there, either. Narutomaki (which they contentiously call "Hana Pride" despite having the peel uncut)? Bad. Gyudon nabe? Sloppiest goop I've ever had and not even that much beef. All the nigiris? Bad. Rice? Bad. That accursed seaweed salad that they charge $7 for? BAD!!! (Seriously, just get a seaweed salad from Kroger and you'll thank yourself.) Do I sound pissed off? Yes. After spending $120 for a waste of cucumbers, I do have a right to be. It should tell you something when every staff member aside from the owners looks like they're being held at gunpoint, slaving away at a sweatshop in Shenzhen serving FAAGDL【sushi】. TL;DR Note to self: Sushi in Phoenix is a bad idea (except Across the Pond...). Eater is a bad idea. Both of those combined is a VERY bad idea. read more

Stopped by here for dinner the other night after the Tanabata event hosted at the Japanese Friendship Garden since we had Japanese on the mind. My friend and I haven't been here in ages for really no specific reason so I am glad we thought of Hana. The service is as friendly and prompt as we'd remember. Order the squid appetizer (they use some sort of potato batter I think??) that is probably one of our favorite dishes here. Tried their baked salmon hand roll which was on what appeared to be a seasonal menu and loved it. Flavorful and just the right amount of sauce to provide a nice umami flavor. I ordered their takoyaki to go for later that night because I had plans to stay up late. Probably the best takoyaki in the central Phoenix area. The few other places that even offer takoyaki on the menu do not do the dish justice (they do not add onions, bonito flakes, and the other various toppings typically served with it). Now that Hana is back on my radar, I will try to come frequent them most often, especially to try some of their larger dinner items. read more

Went on a Saturday at 7pm- was seated quickly. To start, the environment is super loud and everyone was raising their voices to talk and sounds were echoing off the concrete floors and walls. Some tapestry decoration perhaps would be a cheap decoration to minimize the sound. For the food... - good mixed tempura - Hana special was a mix of many raw fish in a single roll which mixes the flavors and you can't tell them apart - the eel/unagi had bonito flakes on top which completely overpowered the flavor of the eel/sauce. Salmon and sea bass not bad - yaki udon had very salty/flavorful chicken bits but under seasoned and dry udon and veggies. Would've been better if the dish was a touch saucier (still relatively dry as I know this isn't a soup dish), and the seasoning was more uniform. read more

I found my go-to Japanese restaurant! I have been searching for proper gyoza and katsudon for some time now in Phoenix and I'm happy to say I've found it! I myself have been to Japan to visit my Dad who lived there for years, and their menu items brought me back to the streets of Tokyo walking around eating amazing food. (Don't walk around eating food in Tokyo) Their gyozas were fresh and pan fried, as they should be ( deep frying gyozas is a sin ). The tonkatsu was just like back in Japan, fresh, hot and amazing.
