I'm not sure how this place could get more than one star, I really don't see how it's possible. To start, the food is disgusting. Truly it does not look edible. When we got our food, it looked so disgusting we physically could not eat it. It was like slop on a plate. However, worst part was the service. Besides the terrible food, I couldn't believe how rude the waitress was. She gave me the wrong food, then swore it's what we ordered (it wasn't). Then she said she was still going to charge us for it. Who does that?? Unreal! Then when we got the bill, she had double charged us for everything. We had to fight her to reverse it. Sushi(Amaebi, Unagi, Uni, Scallop and Snowcrab) - tasty and fresh Grilled Whole Fish - the fish was a bit dry and not particularly flavorful. Really had to rely on the dipping sauce for favors. I would skip next time. Fresh Oysters - small and not particularly memorable. Uni with oyster and quail egg - dreamy and decadent combination. Uni Mint Leaf - uni wrapped in shiso, tempura-battered and deep-fried, served with a dipping sauce. A bit on the oily side and they were a bit skimpy on the uni. Lobster Roll - not particularly memorable. I've had better lobster roll elsewhere. My sushi fish also wasn't that fresh. The overall venue is dark, and above all it smelled funky. Like imagine old wet gym towels. I will not be going back here. I am a sushi aficionado. I have had sushi with kings (not really), presidents (definitely not), and titans of industry (I wish). But I've had a lot of sushi, all over the world, in restaurants with Michelin stars, with stars from other famous tire production companies, and with just really good sushi. So believe me when I say: Hana is incredible. Seriously, I don't understand how they have SUCH consistent, EXCELLENT sushi, visit after visit. I'm here so often, my wife is threatening to take control of our bank account. Every time, BAM, excellent uni, awesome toro, amazing fish all around. Their uni is as good as uni I had when living in Santa Barbara (which is where some crazy amount of the world's uni comes from!), their toro rivals toro I've had in Michelin-star places in Japan (not Jiro; I'm not that baller), and guess what? They're not JUST a sushi place! Half the time, we also order Gyu Don and literally roll out of the restaurant before we explode. Their appetizers are so imaginative and tasty (hello Mochi Shigure, Nasu Misoyaki, and their amazing take on Dynamite!) and their drinks knock it out of the park. I've loved coming to Hana's for sushi for many years- but hasn't been in quite some time. Was invited for a girlfriend's birthday and she forgot it was BYOB. They DO NOT serve alcohol but will provide you glasses if you bring your own. I ended up leaving and grabbing her a bottle of moscato and coming back. My daughter and I enjoyed some edamame, an Alaskan roll and a specialty roll called Mr. Dyno (i think) it was scallops and is baked - so it took quite a while to come out (everyone was almost done with their rolls when this came out). I've been told that Hana is the place to go for truly authentic Japanese cuisine, so I was delighted to finally have a chance to check it out. Even better, the food here is outstanding, so I have reasons to come back and try more of their cuisine. On our visit we had the tempura appetizer, the Yakibuta (slow marinated pork), and the tuna tataki roll. The tempura was light, not greasy and had a fun array of veggies plus shrimp. Really enjoyed it. However, the Yakituba and tuna tataki roll were unlike anything else I've had, and I would hands down order both of those again. The pork in the Yakibuta legitimately fell apart, it was so tender. And the tataki roll was so fresh and flavorful, but the little garlic chips on top gave it an extra punch of flavor that was fantastic. Note: Hana is BYOB, and you are welcome to bring anything you'd like to drink without a corkage fee, so if you have a favorite wine or sake you like to enjoy, definitely bring it along with you! Ok first of all their sushi was amazing!! Definitely high quality sushi with really great sake choices. Large portion of fish on the nigiri and easily one of the best places for sushi we have been to in Phoenix. However what will make me a loyal customer after coming here for the first time was how incredible the staff was! We brought my baby girl who was a bit fussy this evening (she's 16 months and poor baby is getting three new teeth in!) We did not want to be the parents with the crying baby so we kept taking her outside and trying to get her to calm down. Sonya one of the managers came over to our table, brought our baby a few different toys and helped calm her down. They brought her food out first and brought us ice cream (which was the trick btw!) I felt like I was in Japan as soon as I walked in. I've never actually been to Japan, but I assume that Hana Japanese Eatery is just like Japan. From the moment you walk in the door, you're greeted by the (super) busy sushi chefs, who are chopping, spicing, and mixing like crazy behind the bar. Being Sushiholic regulars, we have very high expectations of sushi restaurants: the sushi had better be dirt cheap, and if it isn't, it's got to be such high quality that I'm drooling all over myself between every bite. Hana Japanese Eatery definitely met our expectations. Although the price is slightly higher than other nearby restaurants, the quality was unbeatable. Any of the signature rolls are likely delicious, but we split the Hana Roll (shrimp tempura, but fancy), Hana Pride (riceless and filled with fresh fish), Tuna Tataki Roll (waiter's favorite roll), and the eel roll. From what we saw, there's also a ton of delicious traditional Japanese food. We'll be back to try that as well! read more

Turned 72 today and wanted to go out somewhere nice, and wanted someplace that something other than steak. We had been to Hana a while ago and loved it. Don't know why we haven't been back. But my wife thought of it and I got excited and so we went. So glad we did. We are greeted with a friendly welcome. Now you can't make a reservation, but at our age we eat fairly early. We got there around 6:00 on a Thursday . No problem getting a seat. They have a dish of Yellowtail Collar, which is very limited. But today they had one, SCORE!! Delicious. Tempura Figs, Yum. We had more, and I have to say Yum Yum Yum. Everything is presented with class. They time each thing to come after you've finished what you are currently eating. I do have to caution that this is not a very big place, so if you go on the weekend peak hours you probably will have a wait. There is outside seating, but in this heat, no thank you. I will definitely make sure we get back soon. Oh, and yes they have Sushi, and other Japanese things, so if you want a hit of great Sushi, Ramon, Sashimi, etc. yes they have that as well, fresh, and beautifully prepared. This used to be one of our better sushi restaurant choices for Central Phx. This time we were very disappointed. The food didn't taste fresh and was of low quality. I was surprised to read such positive reviews of Hana. I was underwhelmed. The service was quick and we were excited to dine in. We ordered squid maruyaki (whole grilled squid) and the Hana roll thinking we'd order more as we continued our meal. I paid almost $50 (tax and tip included). The squid was dry and the Hana roll was not filling at all (and it was difficult to eat because it was falling apart). We left to go to another sushi restaurant which was exponentially better. I don't mind paying a lot for sushi. I have paid over $275 for sushi just for me dining out. I cannot justify the prices at this place though. I left hungry and disappointed. I could give them 2.5 stars because the space was clean and they have a lot of variety. It's also wheelchair accessible. read more

Hana's fish is incredibly fresh and that includes their yellowtail, which positively melts in your mouth. That being said, I've ordered multiple rolls here and I feel like they aren't as well curated as some other locations in the valley that I consider to be on the same level as Hana. The rolls were pretty thickly cut, so take that how you will. The uni roll I received was not well balanced, as the amount of uni was not enough to overpower the seaweed wrap. The unagi nigiri was a bit dry during our recent visit, but the tuna was wonderful. Also, they are NO LONGER BYOB. They now have wine and beer available for purchase. I highly recommend the Kizakura Kyoto Matcha IPA. I really did appreciate how clean and spaced out the restaurant was. They require masks when standing and do offer some disposable masks at the door, if necessary. read more

I like Hana, and the service here is pretty great. I definitely think the quality of ingredients is up there, but I don't think the consistently higher price points justify the lackluster presentation and small portions. Located in its own small plaza, Hana sports sparse tables in a dimly lit interior. Perhaps the dimness is for an intimate ambiance, perhaps it's to keep the inside cool, but it bordered on being difficult to see. Service was attentive and considerate, to the point where our initial host asked if there were any food allergies and our waitress seemed psychic in anticipating tea and soda drink refills. $15 Rainbow Roll: I rarely mention pricing, but it seems that most of the rolls here are $15 or above. That would be fine if the presentation, portion, and quality all justified it, but I think this roll only did one out of the three. The fish was indeed fresh, but the roll seemed almost sloppily made, with one end obviously devoid of fish. The rolling was also not done well, and the roll fell apart quite easily while picking up. $15 for Spider Roll: I honestly don't think I've ever seen a Spider Roll priced at $15 unless it included other fish or expensive ingredients. I expected this to be larger than the standard six-piece soft shell crab roll, but it wasn't. Again the ingredients were good, and the soft shell crab was freshly fried with a nice light batter. But again the roll fell apart easily, and the pickled carrot inside was clumsily cut and took up too much space within the already-sparse roll. Uni and ankimo nigiri: I was so excited that there was uni and ankimo nigiri that night, and of course I had to try both. The uni was fresh and ankimo creamy, but the sushi rice had so much rice vinegar that I had a hard time tasting the delicate flavors of uni and ankimo. After the initial bite where I ate the nigiri in one piece, I took the uni and ankimo off to eat sashimi-style so that the rice wouldn't overwhelm them. Perhaps it's the norm in Arizona (I haven't tried enough places here to tell yet), but the ankimo was also twice as expensive as I'm used to. $3 for hot tea and $2.50 for soda (free refills). Not a big deal, but it also seems that most sushi places here don't offer complimentary hot tea. Just a tidbit if you're used to it like I initially was. I'm conflicted about Hana; I may come back for the fresh ingredients, but part of me thinks that the price point and other factors don't justify the product. read more
