My husband surprised me with a date night at Kodo Sushi. It was my first time eating here, but had heard him talking about it many times in the past. Upon arrival, the place doesn't look like anything special. It's inside a strip mall, and looks mediocre. However, do not judge too soon. Once you get inside, everything is well laid out & it's very nice. It was busy when we went in on a Friday night, BUT we got seated quicker than estimated- which is always a win! I was not happy with where we were seated, as it was facing the wall in the small bar area. We are people watchers by nature, so it's always fun to be in a spot where we can look around the room effortlessly. However, it wasn't the end of the world and I certainly didn't want to wait any longer, the food looked wonderful & I was starving! I do not remember exactly which rolls we got, but... all of them were EXCELLENT!! Everything was undoubtedly fresh, and made with quality ingredients. I thought the black rice was really neat! I've never seen that before. The waitstaff were very friendly and accommodating. It took no time at all to get our orders out, which was impressive considering that the place was packed near capacity! As we left, all of the sushi pros behind the glass thanked us for coming in and wished us a great rest of our evening. I thought that was very kind. It's not very often that you find a whole line of people stopping what they are doing to wish you well on your way out of their establishment. All in all, 10/10 experience! I stopped into Kodo Sushi Sake on Northsight Boulevard on a Friday right when they opened at 4:00 PM. I was dining solo and had no trouble finding a seat since there's plenty of seating throughout the restaurant. That said, I was surprised by how quickly the place started filling up after opening, which is always a good sign. One of the first things I noticed was the large sushi bar and being able to watch the sushi chefs at work. There were five of them, which I took as a sure sign this place gets busy. I ordered the spider roll, salmon avocado roll, and steamed edamame. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and exactly what I was hoping for. One unique thing about Kodo is their rice blend. They use a combination of black and white rice, which gives the sushi a distinctive purple color. It's not something you see every day, and it definitely makes their sushi stand out. I also have a food allergy, and the staff handled it carefully and without any issues. They offer fountain drinks, which I always prefer. And I liked their plastic to-go container. I want to preface this with I'm kind of a sushi snob because I have one of the best sushi restaurants by my house in Las Vegas that I've ever been to. We decided to try this place while traveling to see one of our friends. This location is in a strip mall it's very clean the service was amazing. Their theme is black rice so all the sushi rolls come out looking darker than you would normally see. The sushi was not bad at all but some of the rolls were a little bit fishier than I would like. We were greeted warmly and chose a booth towards the right. I had noticed their lunch specials offered M-F 11-2pm so we both ordered from that menu. I got the L/Cali+Shrimp Tempura Combo: California Roll (Half Size), Shrimp Tempura Roll (Half Size), Gyoga(3PCS), Miso Soup. My companion got the L/Rainbow+Dynamite Combo: Rainbow Roll (Half Size), Dynamite Roll (Half Size), 2PCS Nigiri (Chef Choice), Miso Soup. Our soups were brought out pretty quickly and our food not long after. For the price point ($12) and quantity, my lunch special was definitely worth it. It came with 10 California rolls, 5 shrimp tempura rolls, and 3 gyozas. I was pleased to see their gyozas have chicken in them, usually they have pork so I can't eat them. I love their purple rice - so unique. I don't think I'd tried it before and it was good. All of the items I tried were fresh and flavorful. The restaurant has booths, tables, and sushi bar seating. It can get busy during peak times, but I've never had to wait more than a minute or two for a table. The menu is simple and offers a lot of sushi, nigiri and sashimi choices. In this trip we got some sashimi, a few rolls and the delicious Ahi Tower. Everything was fresh and tasty. We came here for dinner and waited a bit since it was pretty busy and we were such a large group. They don't do reservations so you just have to put your name down on the waitlist. Plenty of parking since it is in a plaza. Omakase (4/5): This was 10 pieces of nigiri and a small side of sashimi. Honestly a pretty good deal since it was around $40. Me and a few other people got this combo and we all got different fish for our sashimi. I got yellowtail and it was fresh. here were some raw nigiri and some seared. I don't think they explained the different pieces to us. My favorites were probably the toro and eel. I will say that it took a very long time for the omakase plates to come out. Not sure if they were staggering it since other people ordered normal rolls and plates. The food was definitely good though so I guess I'll let it pass. Everyone else in my party enjoyed it too. The salmon sashimi I ordered was spot on, and really good. 8 slices for $15 is also the best pricing I have found in all of Scottsdale. I also ordered salmon skin and here is where the star deduction came into play. The salmon skin was served to me the way I asked - no rice, no sauce, no vegetables - BUT, it was burnt. So if I do go back, I would probably request them NOT to cook it so long. I ordered my husband a spicy tuna roll and a spicy salmon roll to go. A hidden gem of a sushi spot! Came in with the husb on a Saturday afternoon so we were quickly seated. The restaurant is medium-sized and has really elegant and tasteful decor - woven basket lampshades, torii gate over the entrance, and a colorful accents throughout the space. Combine that with the dim lighting and it makes for a very warm and inviting space. I'm a Toro lover so I immediately locked in on their signature Kodo Roll that has seared Toro and was really stuffed with ingredients with just a thin layer of rice. Love that they use black rice here! I also adore riceless rolls wrapped in Cucumber so we also ordered the Oasis Roll. Very fresh and crisp. Paired really nicely with the vinegar. Paired our rolled with the veggie tempura and seaweed salad (my husb's must-order). I skipped lunch so I was still a little hungry. I decided to add the Mango Crunch Roll to get some food diversity as it had salmon. Another smashing hit! All in all, they pack their rolls with a lot of really quality ingredients, a thin layer of black rice, and present them beautifully for your enjoyment. Service was fantastic as well. They offer countless kinds of rolls and sides as well as the best spicy edamame I've ever had. The service and ambiance is always great and they're typically very fast at this location. I had friends visiting from out of town and they absolutely loved this place. They've been talking about it ever since. My favorite role here is the Las Vegas roll and it is perfect when it comes out. When my friends were here they tried the natto and they said it was good if you're into that kind of thing. I ordered take out for two (4) rolls - the combo roll which is 3 choose ur own mini rolls with dynamite, rainbow, shrimp tempura and an eel cucumber roll. I love a combo roll since I like to try a bit of everything and it's hard to do so ordering solo. Rolls were ready really quickly and labeled nicely. Dynamite roll (3/5) it was just a bit too saucy so it made the roll a bit too salty and hid the flavors of the fish Rainbow roll (4/5) enjoyed the fish and it was fresh - their crab meat is with mayo so felt heavier Shrimp tempura roll (4.5/5) my fav roll of the night, shrimp was fried fresh! The OMG roll (the one that comes out on fire) is delicious and our family favorite. It has the perfect toasty flavor on the outside. We've even ordered this roll and packed it home for leftovers and ate it! The spider roll is also so crunchy and so fresh. Don't be turned away by the purple rice! It's a unique but it doesn't change the flavor of the sushi in my opinion. The yellowtail carpaccio is also delicious - we like to save the sauce and dip our rolls in there. The nigiri usually comes with fresh wasabi (not the colored horseradish paste) so if you're not a fan, I recommend asking them to take it off.
