It's been nearly 10 years since I was last here. My friend and I were in the area and decided to put down some sushi. It's small, but intimate and for a Tuesday evening getting a table was not an issue. The service was great. The food was great. The seafood was fresh, and we were excited for the whole grilled squid. Not too many places have a whole squid around here. We went kind of crazy and got the love boat to share and some extra rolls on the side. I really gotta bump up my rating of Hanaki to a 5 star! Since we've moved to the area, it's become our go-to place for sushi since it's so close. It's not just the convenience that keeps us going back though. I am super impressed with how they are consistent through and through, whether we have dined in or made an order for takeout. The staff and sushi chefs are always nice and kind, very attentive and very prompt with all requests. They are always nice to our kids and bring the "kiddie" chopsticks for our youngest (still in training LOL). For the food, everything is always prepared with care and always fresh. My faves on the menu are yellowtail jalapeno, Hanaki platter, Sushi Deluxe, it just really depends what I am in the mood for. Their hot kitchen items are always great too. We've had everything from chicken, to beef, to shrimp and salmon. Most meals come with soup, salad and rice so the meals are always filling! I ran through every 4-letter word in the book when Ang's Sushi in Greenbrier changed hands and went to AYCE. They were the highest quality, best service, top notch sushi bar in the area. We have looked for probably 2 years now for a good replacement sushi joint. Hanaki, so far, is a top runner. At the recommendation of friends, we used a recent date night to check out Hanaki. It is located in a strip shopping center near Harris Teeter next to a pilates studio. The sign is small and nondescript, so you'll miss it if you aren't looking carefully. We were seated at a table next to a boisterous couple and were able to move to another table near the doors. I will say the seating is a bit cramped given the layout. The tables flanking the entryway don't have much room so you will be able to hear every conversation next to you. I'd recommend they space things out, but I can see why so many tables - they were all full. We've been twice in 2 weeks and favorites so far were the Triple Fancy Maki (a great value which comes with miso soup and salad), Hanbury and Boston Rolls. Our daughter loved the chicken teriyaki and shrimp skewers. The Shumai was a slight disappointment as it was not hot when it arrived. The Blue Hawaiian was good, but needed a slightly thicker slice of mango and kiwi as neither had much flavor to bring to the party. Ang's Volcano roll still hasn't been bested - the one at Hanaki seemed slightly overfried. Hubby enjoyed a hot saki on our recent visit and I liked the Riesling. Service was good on both visits and, when busy, they definitely tag-team tables to make sure you have everything you need. Overall, two very good experiences and we are sure to return! read more

On the recommendation of a friend who goes here regularly...YUM! We all had cucumber salad...super fresh and super huge portion. Definitely enough to split! Yellowtail Tartare was not what I expected but absolutely delightful. We also had the Hallloween roll, the Fire Dragon Roll and the seared tuna dinner. All were wonderful. Having eaten sushi all over the country in my travels, this place was definitely one of the best, and very reasonably priced as well. I've been here a couple times now. Always busy and pleasant. I have ordered their grilled salmon teriyaki lunch box special. It comes with soup, salad, 2 pieces of gyoza, 3 pieces of California roll, white rice, and some fruit (usually oranges). So overall not a bad lunch. Especially for $12. The salmon portion was a nice size. However, the salad dressing is more like a mix of yum yum sauce and ranch, and you only can get California roll. They ask you if you want white or fried rice like it's an interchangeable option, but be aware fried rice is $2 extra. Additionally, my 2nd visit, I noticed I received shumai rather than the gyoza I was expecting (and is written as such on the menu). I was told it was chef's choice?? That wasn't what was written or told to me when I ordered. I have a sense it was what they had and ran out of gyoza but passed it off suddenly that it was chef choice when I asked. I much prefer gyoza over shumai and felt they should have just been up front and said they ran out of gyoza. I had ordered the same bento box lunch before and it came with gyoza then. Lastly, both times, they never served the bento boxes with wasabi and ginger. I had to ask for wasabi the first time and they gave me a huge amount that was too much. I didn't bother to ask the 2nd time because of this. It seemed wasteful the first time. I thought it was a fluke to be missing these essential items in a bento box, but now that it happened again, I'm starting to think this is the norm for them. But I've never ordered a bento box that comes with sushi and wasn't served with wasabi and ginger. I'm actually shocked that no other reviews have noted this glaring omission in their lunch bentos. I see a photo where there is ginger but don't see wasabi. Others are like mine. It seems inconsistent. One review is from over 5 years ago and it seems to have wasabi and ginger. I didn't even know this place has been here that long. But there's no consistency over the years of including these condiments. So odd. I know it's just 3 pieces of California roll, but I need my wasabi and ginger. Will see if this changes in subsequent visits. This is one of the few places that offer beef negimaki appetizer. At $11 though, I haven't tried it yet. I have not eaten dinner here, but their teriyaki salmon is $22, which is $3 more than another place I had it, so unless it's a really good sized portion, it seems pricey in comparison. I read how some reviews noted they don't appear very friendly, and I feel it's not that they're rude, but they seem indifferent. The male waiters seem to be a tad more personable. Overall, I think the lunch is a great value for what you get. The little issues are somewhat minor. It's hard finding one place that hits all the check boxes. Sometimes you accept the minuses for the other pluses. I recommend this place for a good and inexpensive lunch. read more

The steak was burnt and bland, the rice was bland, sushi was not right, wrong consistency and did not have good flavor and the soba noodles lacked flavor! Not the same as it used to be! They prepare vegetables fried rice with sticky and half cooked sushi rice, the broccoli is half yellow half bright green (going bad), no taste. The tuna cocktail barely had any seaweed or special sauce, just chunks of tuna in various sizes in a small bowl. So I'm not a die-hard Sushi person but when I do go, I'm kinda picky. Went out here b/c the people we wanted to go with said they love this place. Must admit, out of all the Sushi places we've been, this has been my absolute favorite. They took it back to service with warm wash cloths for that 'pre-eating' refreshing feel. Its been a long time since I'd been somewhere that offered that service. You can tell that this place hasn't been so 'Americanized' such that the service is single threaded. This place reminds me of some of my foreign travels where they are working hard to make sure that the customer is always satisfied and been given the best experience possible. Everything from refilled waters, authentic cuisine, and happy service, it's just awesome. The chef's in the back were working fervently on all their rolls and that alone was a sight to behold. The passion behind their work showed in the plates we received. The way the rolls were laid out on our plate was gorgeous. I can't emphasize this enough. This place is all about the detail. Will it cost a little more? Yes.. yes it will. However, if you're looking for good food, great service, and a quality experience overall, go here. I actually like it here more than 3 stars. The sushi was fresh and the staff was polite and attentive. A small sushi restaurant in a busy strip mall off of Hanbury Road. The only reason they received 3 stars instead of 4 is because they were very very skimpy with their salmon in the spicy salmon roll... maybe they were running low on fresh salmon? The other roll I ordered was a spicy tuna and there was plenty of tuna in the roll, so I cannot assume they were skimpy as a general rule. But there was just SO much of the crispy panko, it was really off-putting. I may give this restaurant another chance and will let you know how that goes. read more

The best sushi in the Virginia Beach/Chesapeake area. My son and I stopped in here while running errands and new we had found a gem. We brought the rest of the family back and our rave reviews held up. The Super Star roll is warm and delicious, the Zebra roll is a favorite. The various fish with an asparagus snap and the perfect side sauce. The seafood fried rice is a large portion and you can see they use whole shrimp, scallops and lots of crab.
