Just finished eating there. Get the super toro roll...it was really good. Everything was good, but especially the super toro.

This is our favorite sushi restaurant in Hampton roads. The staff is always welcoming and attentive. The restaurant is always clean, and the food is consistent. My wife and I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was quite a few people there but it took us no time to get our food after we had decided what we wanted. We had the shumai as an appetizer and we had it fried. It was hot and delicious. The sauce it comes with is mainly sweet with a little salt. For entrees my wife ordered the Outer Banks roll and the Hanaki roll which she throughly enjoyed. I had the Teriyaki Steak box lunch which came with quite a bit of food. The steak wasn't as flavorful as I'd like but was cooked well. The gyoza was a little tough but ok overall, and the California roll was made perfectly! Pictures attached. read more

5 YEARS LATER UPDATE STILL a regular here and looking back, it was oversight on my part not to full stop mention this is the BEST SUSHI PLACE IN ALL OF HAMPTON ROADS. Every single thing I've ever gotten from this place in the probably 6-7 years I've been a regular here has been fresh, delicious, and fairly priced. Waitresses will remember you and your nuances. Ex: I always always get siracha for my sushi. Everyone is warm and genuine. The owner is the sweetest man. So happy to continue to be able to say I give them my business even 5 years later. Cannot be beat, there's no competition here. Hands down, they CRUSH everyone. My heart and belly are happy every time I visit this place. A cut FAR above the rest! read more

My husband and I decided to try a local place on Yelp where we have never been while my daughter was away. This is a bit of a drive since it's located in Hanbury but it's well worth it in my opinion. While waiting for the meal to arrive we commented that it was taking a bit longer than we are accustomed to however once it arrived it was clear why. The dishes are not just delicious, they are works of art! We tried a few of the locally named dishes including the Great Bridge and the Outerbanks rolls as well as the crab cake and volcano rolls. Each one just as delicious as the last. We have since gone back with family from out of town and each time was just as good. We will be visiting Haru again soon. read more

So it's now called "Hanaki"!? Still, this is the only place for great sushi in Chesapeake. Conveniently located for me as it's right down the street from my house. This is the only place I go to for that sushi craving. Once inside, feel free to sit at the sushi bar or at the tables. The Food. -Cucumber salad: Always given as the start to the meal. It has pickled cucumbers with pieces of crab/shrimp (?) meat to give it a zing to this palette cleanser of a dish. -Miso soup: Another must order for me. Lots of flavor, but then it would be a shame to mess up a staple like this. -Treasury roll (pictured): My all time favorite roll in this place. Don't ask me what's in it since I wouldn't know unless I memorized it. It does have tons of roe and tempura flakes for a good crunch. Sometimes, it evens has gold flecks in it for kicks! I usually get it with extra sauce. -Fried cheesecake (pictured): The first place where I've tried this and it serves as the standard for it. It always comes with come chocolate drizzle and a bit strawberry. Loveee it! The Service. Always excellent! They start by giving you a hot towel. The waitresses are very attentive and are always picking up trash on the table almost as soon as we set it to the side. The sushi chefs are always so polite and they will make special requests! In addition, they always do wonderful presentation of the food. Try the volcano roll for an example. Overall, my favorite local sushi place. I never get disappointed here! PS. I was very surprised with all the positive reviews how utterly disappointed I was. They're just you're typical sushi restaurant, nothing special. The prices are priced too high for the quality we had. They're an extremely small location so don't expect to get a big group in this place. We were all crammed together in a corner with hardly any elbow room to eat. The service could go either way. On one hand they were very quick to refill our drinks yet on the other they're even faster to get you in and out. A Very rushed pace. When my father was asking questions about their specials or how certain things were made they did give him an attitude which clearly aggravated my Dad. (And ruined the mood) The food was just ok, for the price you'd expect a lot more bang for your buck. I don't think I'd come back if it were up to me to choose. I frequently dine at Hanaki for dinner and I have never had a bad experience. The service is consistently prompt and friendly. That atmosphere is somewhat intimate due to the dim lights and small interior. As soon as you are seated for dinner, you are given a hot towel to clean your hands as well as a small portion of cucumber salad-which I appreciate. We have been coming back to this restaurant for many years, before the name change... Still the best sushi and yakisoba in the Chesapeake area... Lived in Japan for eighteen months, and for Hampton Roads, this place is top notch. Lots more than just sushi on the menu, too. My spouse and I went for a mix. She got the Carribean Salad, straight sashimi and a Disney Roll, and I got the Chirushi and a Rainbow Roll. All had a surprisingly good variety of quality fish. If you are wondering where the old chefs from Nagoya (now Domo) in Chesapeake went...well they opened up a new restaurant called Haru! The food was excellent and I mean EXCELLENT. Every roll had a distinct flavor and every roll (including the appetizers) really was outstanding. Jessica and Vincent have truly taken the sushi experience to another level. Due to its location it's a place we go to quite a bit, when we're craving sushi but not interested in taking a long drive. The trendy warm aesthetics is refreshing compared to the typical look and feel of the restaurants in the area. Staff: The friendly and responsive welcome you with hot towels and a small cucumber salad once your seated. What I really enjoy is the fact that the servers don't have to ask the chef what is contained in roll. They all know the menu. Food: The menu offers good amount of choices and the wall board lists any specials for the day. The fish is fresh, which is paramount to any sushi restaurant but sadly not a commonality, even in seafood area like Hampton Roads. Having been here many times with family and friends I think I've tasted just about everything on the menu and can attest that anything the chefs make, be it a cut of sashimi, piece of sushi or a roll tastes really good. Overall: Clean throughout and bathrooms are good size giving a rating of 4 Stars. read more

Because of high rating, tried dinner here. When we got there on Friday night, there were many poeple waiting, that usualy means the food is good so I was excited. To be honest, we all were disapointed. Atmosphere was nice, presentation was really nice, and rolls were pretty good. But that's all. If you are only after the rolls, probably wouldn't notice, but fish quality wasn't so good. Plus when I saw even "Tsuma" wasn't property prepared (which the most basic for Sushi chef), I lost some interest. Service wasn't so great, the way they seved Sake wasn't present (Oviously they don't know about Sake much). This is the closet Sushi restaurant from our house, so wish it were a little better, but can't really recommend, especialy if you'd like to have real Sushi, real Japanese food. read more

So good and fresh sushi, never had a bad dish there. The food looks like art, it's so beautiful, so delish!!!

Mediocre the most. The soup, miso soup, had two little cubes of tofu in it. Both of us in the party had that soup and think it was the reason for the upset stomach. The sushi was ok! The yellow tail was not fresh. If it tastes really fishy...it's not fresh. We sat at the bar watching them make orders, it was entertaining. I had the strawberry Sprite, the Japanese version, it was an interactive tasty drink. I love their use of crunchy Panko bread crumbs in the sushi, what a great level of texture. Sanitary measures need to be taken. They used the same damp towel to wipe knives, their hands, cutting/prepping boards, and also the counter tops......where is the sanitizer buckets, where are more towels...BACTERIA CROSS CONTAMINATION!!! Board of health would give them negative points for that. Some inspector was there to do an inspection and we overheard them being told that their equipment is not up to par. We were there at 2pm and at 3pm, they stop serving and close until dinner time. Right at 3pm, they tried rushing us to get out. We were still eating. Then the young Sushi maker took his hat off and rubbed his head and hair for at least 30 seconds where Sushi was just made. Then all the employees start sitting down and eating their lunch and ignored all of us customers in their finishing our lunches. There are many other Sushi places around that are far much better. read more
