After a full afternoon hiking to the Hanakapi'ai Falls and a kayak/snorkeling tour the very next morning, it was time to rejuvenate and tender our sore and worked out muscles. We found Hanalei Day Spa after reading their reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor and was impressed with what folks had to say. My wife called and set up an appointment for a couples massage. She chose the Lomi Lomi massage and I went with the Deep Tissue. I've had numerous massages ranging from ritzy super plush & expensive day spas to hole in the wall ones from Craigslist. I may have had the best massage by a masseuse thus far. I had pulled a neck muscle while doing yoga a few days before and had informed Thallon (sp) of such and he worked his magic. Either it's my skinny body with very low body fat that made it easy for him to feel the knots and tension or he's just that good. I can mentally picture him feeling his way through and unknotting the kinks and by the time we were done, I can rotate my head side to side with NO restrictions from the previous injury. The rest of my body was tenderized from head to toe. If you're looking for a great massage and not pay an arm and a leg for one, this is the place for you. Keep in mind this is not a day spa that has full amenities like sauna, steam room and a garden to relax. This is more like a lil house that's a very small operation that focuses on one thing... Providing great massages. If this place was closer to home, I'll be a regular for sure. The staff is very nice and polite like most locals here in north shore and they make you feel very welcomed. Oh, if you're using your iPhone or Droid with the Yelp App and clicked on "Directions to Business", you better make sure you're not going towards Princeville. It's the opposite side about 15 mins north passed the Hanalei Center. We called to tell them for directions and we can tell by his response that this happens quite often. My husband and I recently honeymooned on Kauai and were lucky enough to visit the Hanalei Day Spa where we received lovely massages. We were having a very leisurely vacation so we didn't call until the day of and they were able to get us in that very afternoon for a couple's massage. Great setting, friendly staff but their pricing is very misleading. They charged me an extra $15 for having the massage outside (meanwhile I could hear the neighbors drinking beers on their patio throughout the whole massage), an extra $15 to use the pregnancy pillow (I'm 26 weeks pregnant) and as I was heading out the door to the massage my therapist asked me if I wanted the "lomi lomi" massage...I agreed not realizing until after the massage that too was an extra $15. I think all the upcharges for the massage were a little ridiculous and I left there spending almost $50 more than I had planned going in and feeling like I had been had. read more

My sister and I signed up for massages and they gave us a 'couples' massage and body scrub in the same room. A bit odd but ok. After the massage started, they talked to us about add on services. The therapists gave each of us different add on options. We signed up for 80 minute massage and body scrub. The massage started about 20 after the hour (3 pm) and we were finished and showered by 5 pm. There was quite a bit of noise outside the room - people talking and also landscape or construction. First, we went and scoped out the behemoth that is the St. Regis and their spa before deciding to give this spot a chance. This isn't the same kind of animal, no lavish surroundings or wood lockers here. Had amazing time at this little cute spa. All the staff are nice and friendly. Had to do intake form prior to the arrival but it was easy. Had appointment for lomilomi but I changed to deep tissue when I came in. They were flexible enough to change the course for me. There was a bathroom in the massage room and we took shower after. Was nice to have own bathroom in the room. Yes, it is pricy but worth it. Relaxing music was nice, too. After the massage, I just wanted to take a nap. I started going to the Hanalei Day Spa about 4 years ago. This trip (July 2014) I thought I would try a different place, one in the town of Hanalei. After waiting for about 20 minutes, it was obvious that I had been stood up by this other place (door locked, no one around). I called the Hanalei Day Spa and they had an appointment for early that afternoon. I shouldn't even have tried to go somewhere else. Every massage I've received here has been relaxing and a great way to get rid of the stress of the 6 hour flight from the west coast. My masseuse, Shoshana (sp???) was excellent, right amount of pressure. I like the location. The fact that this is a small location is fine with me. The different staff I've had have been excellent. This was my 4th visit to this spa, and I have loved ever massage received! The spa has an old Hawaii charm, and is impressively quiet for being next to a restaurant and parking lot. This time I had Christopher who gave an amazing Lomi Lomi massage, but honestly I'd never had a bad experience at this spa. Will definitely be coming back before this trip is over - it's worth every penny! A few notes for massage newbies: when something isn't right, you have to let the masseuse know. They're not mind-readers, although it often feels that way. Also, this particular spa is in a small building next to a resort. There's going to be some background noise, and there's not much the staff can do about that. The sound of the ocean is one such noise, and in my opinion it more than makes up for any occasional car or restaurant sounds. Unfortunately not a fabulous experience for me. My therapist was polite and friendly but either the sheets or he smelled a little "ripe". He also needed a nail trim to keep from scratching me. The breeze and ocean sounds outside were nice to hear, but since the open air structure backed up to a popular restaurant, we could hear the staff tossing out their garbage and a random car alarm. I started my vacation off here with a full body massage, thanks to a Spa Finder gift card from my husband. They were the only spa on the island that accepted Spa Finder cards, so I was lucky they were in my area (they're in Hanalei - obviously - an we were staying in Princeville - about 30 minutes away). It's not too fancy of a place. It looks more like a small house, but on the larger Colony Resort property. However, it doesn't matter that it's not your typical "fancy" spa. The people are nice, the waiting area is comforting, the prices are reasonable and it's in as near to heaven as possible. I mean - you can even get a beachside massage as just a $15 add on! Pretty reasonable to me! My therapist seemed to massage every single muscle, from the bottom of my feet to the top of my scalp. The hour seemed just long enough and I felt completely relaxed at the end. VERY nice way to start my vacation! If I had time and money I would've gone again during my week on Kauai, but I'll definitely be back when I go to Kauai again! read more

My husband and I got a couples massage. Lovely, friendly atmosphere. His massage was outstanding. Mine was good, but not great. My therapist kept using her elbows up and down my spine. I thought she would sense it was painful by my gasps and flinching, but she did not. I finally had to ask her to stop doing that. The rest of the massage was good. I booked a massage for me & my best buddy. We have traveled extensively & experienced a wide variety of treatments around the United States. We were warmly greeted in the best aloha spirit immediately upon our arrival. The small facility was clean the the staff were all highly professional. We both chose the Abhyanga massage. This involved a total neck to toe soaking in warm oil. The massage is amazing & we give credit to the highly experienced massage therapist. It was quite obvious that he was well versed in the Abhyanga practice. We both agree this was the best massage treatment experience & we give the Hanalei Day spa our highest recommendation. The only improvement we would like to see is a better equipped shower facility for use after the treatment. read more

I received a 50 minute prenatal massage (I'm 34 weeks) at the Hanalei Day Spa and would highly recommend my therapist, Danielle. She used a body cushion (a special cushion that sits on top the table, allowing a pregnant person to comfortably lie face-down, face-up and on your side) and was very attentive to my comfort throughout the session. A prenatal massage is definitely not a deep tissue, however Danielle was still able to do some extra work on my aching low back and hips which felt amazing! Overall wonderful experience and I left feeling completely relaxed! Pricing seems typical for Kauai, on the expensive side but much better than the St. Regis. We stayed at the Hanalei Colony Resort for 5 nights and, while there, decided to get a couples massage at Hanalei Day Spa, which is on-site. We chose the beachside lomi lomi and it was worth the extra money on both counts. However, we only did 50 minute massages and we should have opted for the longer 80 minute option. Needless to say, after getting our massages in the morning, we bailed on our plans to go kayaking and rode our relaxation through the rest of the day. If we ever make it back to this paradise, we will be stopping back at this haven of relaxation. read more

We enjoyed a beachside massage for our anniversary. A lovely, scenic drive from Hanalei and Darci was so pleasant to work with. We worried a little about noise from the restaurant but that was not an issue at all. I heard kids playing for a bit on the beach and then I only heard waves. My husband had been dealing with some aches and pains and his therapist gave them plenty of attention. The breeze blowing in was so peaceful and I liked that we were not at a mega-resort. We ate at the Mediterranean restaurant afterwards, and they have great food and splendid views. A wonderful way to spend our 15th wedding anniversary! read more

This review is purely based on the quality and technique of the masseur. Son did my deep tissue massage today and it was absolutely PHENOMENAL. His technique is amazing. Now, I have had deep tissue massages for years and I'm completely familiar with the fact that to get pain relief and therapeutic effect, some of the massage may be a bit uncomfortable in that "hurts so good" kind of way. I arrived with a back and neck that was completely locked up, stiff and so tight I was having headaches. Son gave me the most amazing deep tissue massage that literally turned me and my back into jello. For those of you that really understand what a good massage is, Son is amazing. Highly recommend him!! FYI, The location is VERY basic. Imagine small shack near the beach with a few therapy rooms in it. It's NOT the Four Seasons, but as I said, this review is based purely on the quality of the massage with this particular masseur: Son. Request him as not all the therapists have his level of technique. My sister had a deep tissue massage at the same time as me and her experience with her therapist, while good, was not as amazing as mine. read more

Hanalei Day Spa is a gem. Darci is gracious, warm and welcoming. A heart as big as the island! We did a couples massage in the hut by the beach and it was heavenly. Love those open air massages. Went here with my husband for a beach-side couples massage toward the end of our vacation. We both have disc problems, and the hikes earlier in the vacation had us aching a bit. Was very pleased with the service, and the massage was lovely. We only wish we had sprung for 80 minutes or more! I felt like I could stand up straight for the first time in days! Such relief. Super laid back atmosphere, and very simplified massage experience. If you're expecting a major luxury spa with tons of amenities, this likely isn't the place for you, but if you're looking for friendly staff and a relaxing massage, Hanalei Day Spa has you covered! Me, my sister, and my parents went to Hanalei Day Spa looking for a peaceful massage in beautiful Kauai. We got everything but; it was a VERY poor experience. My sister and I got full body massages along with a mud wrap, while my parents got massages on the beach. The Hanalei Day Spa facility is extremely poor for the high prices they charge. They do not offer anywhere to change or robes to change into, and they do not offer guests showers in the ONE bathrom they have in the waiting room, which contains a noisy washer and dryer. The entire facility looks like a very small house and offers no luxuries. While my sister and I were having our massages, we could hear the phone ringing at the front desk and car alarms outside - the farthest thing from relaxing. In addition, my parents could hear people putting garbage in the dumpsters during their massages on the beach. Their massages were located in a small tent on the beach where they were told to change. The tent did not have any shield from others walking past and offered no privacy! The front receptionist was also rude. My sister and I requested female masseuses prior to coming to the spa, which was disregarded and the receptionist gave her a male masseuse. After our mud wraps, we were told to shower off. I had to run through the main room/lobby in a towel to the bathroom to shower off. When I exited the bathroom after my shower, I looked to the receptionist to see where to go. She continued to laugh with someone on the phone and ignore me while I was wet in my towel, standing in the waiting room. As far as the quality of the massages, they were mediocre. My dad said his masseuse wasn't very engaged in his massage and he felt like she wasn'teven putting effort to make the massage enjoyable. Overall, Hanalei Day Spa did not meet our expectations and we were left thoroughly disappointed. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Hanalei Day Spa! When I arrived in Kauai my back was in serious pain (and had been for over a week), and it was preventing me from fully enjoying my vacation experience. After a wonderful 50 minute massage to target my lower back pain, I felt completely better, and did for the rest of the trip-including an 8 mile hike with my son and daughter and a successful surfing lesson! My massage therapist really saved my vacation-she was truly skilled. The staff were extremely friendly, and the facilities were clean and welcoming.
