Hanco's is a tiny restaurant in Boerum Hill specializing in Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) and Bubble Tea. The Banh Mi come in the usual varieties - classic, chicken, pork, plus a tofu version. I have tried the chicken, pork, and tofu. All were quite good. The sandwiches are available in Mild (no hot sauce or peppers), Medium (sri racha hot sauce, no peppers), and Hot (hot sauce and peppers). The difference between the different hotness levels is not explained on the menu... I learned it the hard way (when I ordered hot). The prices are slightly higher than at Nicky's but still very reasonable at about $4.25 per sandwich. read more

Came here after listening to an interesting sketch on NPR's "This American Life" involving Hanco's. It's difficult for me to find banh mi I like in NYC, but Hanco's is a great option. I liked the Pork Chop banh mi more than the classic. Full of meat and veggies (shredded carrots and turnips) on toasted bread, nice and crispy on the outside. Order spicy for a nice kick. Their bubble tea is expensive, $4+ for a 16 oz. Not familiar with the Brooklyn market pricing on boba, but guess that may be one thing that costs less in Manhattan! read more

Generic pho generator with rude staff should be avoided unless you like undercooked food. I dined in and their kitchen staff propped the doors open three times while they restocked their kitchen with supplies. I closed it the first time because it was around 29 degrees outside and the restaurant was already cold. When they saw me closing it, they looked like they wanted to fight me. I gotta admit Hanco's is pretty cool. For instance, take their grilled chicken banh mi, the baguettes are lightly buttered, overstuffed with authentic pickled pickles/carrots/ cilantro and mayo...you got yourself a perfect meal! The baguette just hits the spot, the bread is soft and warm unlike other Viet baguettes that are pretty dry and flaky. And the green tea is not too sweet or bland. Hub always goes for their traditional classic while I stick with my adventurous route. You'll def taste the difference in quality from the marinated stuffing, meat, and baguette itself. read more

I've bought lunches and drinks many times here and people who work there seem to be nice overall! I loved this place until they screwed up my drink and it's because my drink was way too sweet even after I asked them twice for making it less sweet. I still went back after that for a few times as I sometimes want something hot to drink and I wanna get something other than coffee, latte or tea. This time I asked for a medium hot almond tea with no bubble, less sweet and skim milk. I actually have the same requests every time I got my tea. Okay, I am not an expert on banh mi but I do know joy on a baguette when I taste it. This is everything I want a sandwich to be -- meal-quality ingredients on fresh bread. I had the pork sandwich, spicy, and my husband had the classic, spicy. Both were revelatory. The sweetness of the pickled carrots and radishes played well off of the spice and the cilantro just elevated the palate. Everything tasted very fresh and very flavorful. We ordered original bubble tea with milk, too, and it was great. Strong tea presence, the appropriate amount of milk and springy, sweet tapioca. While the dining room won't win any awards for decor, any ambiance shortcomings melt away in the depths of sandwich-happiness. I'll be back soon to see if consistency is a strong-point. read more

With friendly service with a smile, the lady at the counter greets me and kindly asks me what I would like to order. I love the welcoming feel of Hanco's. Without a hesitation, I order the sandwich #1(mild--I'm not crazy enough to test these tastebuds or what's left of them), also known as the Paris special, with 3 different meats(pate, turkey, ground pork), mayo, cilantro, cucumbers, sweet & tart pickled julienne carrots and turnips. There are about 4 or 5 tables where one could sit and eat your meal in content. It's a nice space with art pieces which are the traditional Vietnamese foods that you could order there. They have the place newly repainted with nicer soothing hues. I like the beverages that we got. Having their Thai iced tea was refreshingly cool and their iced espresso with condensed milk was just as awesome. Last time, I had their iced lemonade, and it was really good with sugar and just enough lemons to make it tart. My fiancee had the veggie pork, in another words, pork that is tofu, but looks like meat. He had the extra spicy flavor and said it roared down his esophagus and was worth the blaze that it trailed. =) I take it as a good thing. read more

I was glad to find a place where I can get a rice vermicelli salad in Brooklyn. That has to be one of my favorite meals. Hanco's makes my favorite Banh Mi's around (I've been to Ba Xuyen but it was a little too "real" for me)! Sometimes though, I feel like they shove too much veg in there and I always seem to get a mouthful of cilantro stems rather than the good stuff. This is the first unenjoyable vietnamese sandwhich I have ever had. And I know my banh mi. I ordered the pork sandwhich. First the bread: its some weird hoagie roll and not a baguette. Condiments: they use regular jar mayonnaise- no spicy garlic mayo at Hanco's. Meat: the pork was underseasoned and seemed to be steamed and not grilly. The pork was also very fatty and tendony and because of the way it was cooked it wasnt a pleasant sensory experience. I had to take some of the meat out because it was that bad. Extras: Theyre light on the cilantro, give tons of carrot but not much daikon. All in all I was very underwhelmed. The ratio of meat to bread was wrong with way too much unpleasant pork to hoagie bread; so much so that the bread got super soggy and not in a good way. If you have never had banh mi before please go somewhere else like Paris Sandwhich or Saigon or really anywhere else in Chinatown. If you are on the hood and MUST have a sandwhich go to Nicky's. read more

I love Hanco's and usually order the rice vermicelli with tofu -- it's the perfect light meal and the tofu has a nice honey sweetness to it.
