I was offered water and tea when I arrived, and Brianna explained the services to me very clearly before pairing me with the wonderful Jay as my massage therapist. Jay was very calm and thorough when explaining the massage and asking what I wanted to focus on. She is extremely knowledgeable and clearly takes her work seriously. I am always hesitant to join a membership, but this is one I am very happy with and continue my membership throughout the year. Not only is the facility clean and relaxing. The specialists here really try to provide you with the best experience possible. They have a variety of people to choose from, and if you don't know who you'd like, they will have recommendations. I highly suggest that when you call into the hot line to ask the customer care to directly transfer you to the store. The staff members at the store is very professional and courteous to meet your needs with empathy and compassion. Time after time, I cannot tell you how much the staff personally takes an interest in my well-being from the moment I walk through those doors, especially the assistant manager (Miranda) and her team. My go to masseuses is Christian. Christian is trained in a variety of pressure and really pays attention to the reaction of your body. Christian's personality is so bubbly that it just makes you feel welcome every time he greets me. Janelle is fantastic with facials, too. She studied as a beautician and checks in on you every step to make sure none of the beauty products being used irritates your skin or you. She's also gentle with your needs and pays attention to the sensitivity of your skin, looking for any reaction if there is any. I've seen another therapist a few years ago and didn't come out feeling new with a mediocre light masseuse. I really like to gain something from my sessions have either tension released or looser muscles so my massages are more intensive which is how I like 'em. Only see Richard if you're the same. Oh, how I loathe to do this, however I think that current and future clients deserve to be aware. I have been a H&S member for 6 years. The front desk staff is excellent, the massage therapists are excellent, and the estheticians are excellent. They all deserve 5 starts all around. Here are a few things you need to know: 1. Canceling your membership is nearly impossible and you have to hound them for weeks in order to do so before being charged for your next cycle. I thought it would be as easy as showing up or a phone call, however only the manager has the authority to cancel memberships. The manager is only available on Tuesdays after 1pm. They will give you a call, but it's usually during your working hours so you will miss that call. And once you miss it, you're out of luck until they're in the next week. I had to play phone tag for weeks and still wasn't able to get the manager on the phone, but one of the staff members was able to work around the issue and I was finally able to cancel my membership. 2. Being a member for several years, I've seen so many faces come and go. The turnover rate for employees here is extremely high. I rarely see anyone last a year. That really should have been a red flag for me. I learned that employees here are mistreated by their employer, who isn't even a California resident, btw. Apparently, the owner likes California money, but actually hates California so they take their angst out on their employees. If you think you're supporting a local business by visiting Alameda H&S, you're actually not. 3. They raise membership rates with little to no notice. When I started, membership was $79 a month. At some point, it rose to $89/mo. Ok, fine another $10, I guess I could deal with that. But within the last year, it's been hiked up to $99. I didn't get an email or text that the price was being increased yet again. The only notification, because I happened to be looking in the right place at the right time, was a tiny little sign about the size of a Post-It that said that rates would be increasing on a certain date. So, yeah. While the services rendered and the customer service while you're on-site is great. Keep in mind that everything is wonderful until membership prices rise without notice and you try to cancel. I feel so bad for all of the employees at this location. On principle, I would advise against visiting or frequenting this business. read more

I had an hour massage with Mao and added on CBD as well as Himalayan Salt treatments. Someone gifted me three services here. It was nice. Ambience is "professional corporate massage". The people at the front desk are attentive and friendly, and they will give you tea or naturally flavored water. I dinged them a star for two reasons: 1. Of the three services I had, the experience was definitely hit and miss depending on who you get. I had a massage and two facials. They were all fine, but two were much better than the third. So I think it probably pays to look at reviews here on Yelp and try to figure out who the best, people are and set your appointments up with them. 2. They also do a ridiculous amount of upsell and you have to be very clear with them about what the cost of those upsells are and be very clear and definitive about saying no if you don't want to jack up the cost of your treatment. They're very pushy about it. I'm sure they're being told to do that by the owners. It's more than a little annoying. Larnice helped me on the phone the other day and she was so patient with me and answered all of my questions! I have been a member for about 4 to 5 years and I felt like she deserves an outstanding shout out! I have not gotten a massage since December 2019 and work with immunocompromised children so did not want to risk it for them when it comes to covid. I asked Larnice all the protocols that they are doing to prevent the spread and she had a wealth of knowledge. They clean and sanitize each room and they change the sheets as well. Rooms are in high demand so there isn't time to air out each room before each customer. But you can go early in the morning and be the first one in there. Also with facials, you can ask the esthetician to wear a face shield too since your mask will be off. I usually get massages and not facials but ever since wearing a mask at work for 12 hours I have gotten a lot of acne and now have acne scarring. Larnice explained the different facials to me and how it all works! I had questions after questions and Larnice answered them all with grace and patience. The worst facial experience of my life - ruined my birthday and my skin! I went to Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa to treat myself on my birthday, and it turned into an absolute nightmare. This was my first time getting a facial there, and it will definitely be my last. Everything started normally - the esthetician immediately tried to upsell me an extra hydration package, and since I was in a good mood, I agreed. Big mistake. Right after the first product was applied, I told her my skin was burning - not tingling, burning - on my cheeks and forehead. She literally laughed at me and brushed it off, saying it must just be a tickle. I kept telling her something was wrong, and only after my skin started reacting more severely, she finally removed the product and began slathering on moisturizer. At the end, she casually said, "Oh yeah, your skin definitely reacted to the product!" -- as if I hadn't warned her the moment it started. She clearly had no clue what she was doing. She just told me to moisturize and stay out of the sun. I followed every instruction and did my best to heal my skin, but here we are: two weeks later, my face is still peeling, and now I have dark patches on both my cheeks and forehead. As if that wasn't bad enough, I've been calling them for 10 days straight to request a refund. I've spoken to almost every staff member, but the manager is somehow always "too busy" to speak to me. No call back, no follow-up, no accountability. Just complete disrespect and incompetence across the board. This experience has been a complete disaster from start to finish. I am now left with damaged skin, frustration, and zero support from the spa. Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY from this place. They're unprofessional, unqualified, and clearly don't care about their clients' well-being. read more

Horrible business practices. Massages are mediocre, big turnover in their massage therapists. Do NOT get the membership. The membership is absolutely predatory- cannot cancel it or remove your card online- In order to cancel your membership, you have to call. Then they tell you a manager will call you back in a couple days. Then that manager will email you a PDF, which you have to fill out, and return. Then you're still liable for 30 days. When you do go be prepared for them to be constantly pushing add ons. read more

I really do like the all the Masseuse's here at this location they all are very experienced and know what they are doing! My favorite masseuse is Dominique! She is so in tune with the body and she reallllyyyy listens to you when you explain what your problem areas are! She helps me so much every time I go! Honestly she releases so much tension in my body that I feel a little light headed afterwards. If your looking for a masseuse that's knows what she's doing and is patient then she is the best choice for you. She also makes you feel like your her only client which always makes me feel good because I don't feel like a number where I'm rushed along. A lot of corporate massage places can make you feel that way but not with Dominique she's the best! Only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is because the front literally always mess up my appointment. Not all the girls but I always have a miscommunication. If I book a 2 hour massage somehow it ends up only being an hour or an hour n a half. They will change it with out letting me know. It's so frustrating. It makes things so hard for me that I've actually decided to cancel my membership things never go smoothly. If I book with certain girls things go great but when I book with others theirs always confusion. If you book an appointment just be sure it's not canceled or it's the amount of time you hoped for. Writing as a first time non-member here... I would give this place two stars for pricing and three stars for actual service. Let me tell you why! I came in for a dermalogica ad on treatment, as well as the facial. The facial was introductory price of $89 and the dermalogica ad on treatment luminfusion was $150. I was told the facial usually takes about an hour and the dermalogica takes about 30 to 60 minutes. My therapist was great throughout the process and I actually learned a lot from her about skin care about the order of which to apply certain serums or when to exfoliate etc. Usually most facials for me take over an hour and between the actual facial and the dermological treatment it was done in just 1 hour. While the facial was fine, There are no extractions done. This was the first for me and I found to be unusual. I didn't mention anything along the process cuz I thought she was going to get to it at some point but she never did. I feel like compared to facials I've had other establishment. It definitely is not as robust or thorough. The luminfusion treatment was done in between different facial steps and she also ended with a facial massage using these very cold glass balls which was amazing. However, when I got to paying it seems that in addition to the services that i booked which was the facial and the dermalogica treatment which should have been 239$ total, I was charged for for a "Dermalogica Pro Restore Booster" of $30 and then a mini cold stone face massage of 20$! At no point during the service did she indicate that these were up charges or inform me how much they were going to be. I honestly don't even know when she used the booster on me. I don't think this is good business practice to just do whatever you want to the client without telling them how much it would be. Who does this?? I've never had this experience at any spa before. The mini cold stone massage while felt great was a max of 2 minutes. I assume both things were included in the overall service as isn't a facial massage part of a facial?? I informed the receptionist staff that I was not told that these would be up charges and she said oh that's up to the service staff. The front desk tried to upsell me on a monthly package but at this point I felt a bit put off and wasn't very happy about the extra charges Obviously so declined it. Although I felt that therapist was knowledgeable about what she was doing I had actually considered coming back. Then upon paying another therapist came out from the back and told me that as part of my dermalogica booster charge I was supposed to get the full-size bottle of the remainder treatment that was not utilized But since they can't give that to me, she gave me this little sample. Womp. Confusing. It was then that my therapist came out and asked if I had any further questions and I told her that I didn't realize that there were up charges in that since she didn't mention, I assumed it was part of the service. Yet her response was a shrug on the shoulders . ?!?!! Its too bad their charging practices are a bit shady as I was planning to come back here but guess this will not be the case... DO NOT BUY A GIFT CARD - I was given a $90 gift card to cover a full introductory massage until I was told at booking that gift cards can not be used towards introductory pricing and that the new price was $150. Hand & Stone knowingly sold my mom 4 gift cards for $90 each for my siblings to get massages even though they knew we would be turned away when we tried to use the cards to pay for our introductory massages. Total waste of money, would've been better off gifting $90 cash and scheduling the massages for us. They also claim to not have a direct corporate phone number which is false. read more

Legit massage that offers a monthly membership. This is a bit of a unicorn, in that you can get a great massage and at a pretty decent price. It definitely benefits to grab that membership (especially if you can get that membership fee waived), but it's not too bad if you choose not to, either. I like that they actually have separate rooms (not just curtains), for the massages. Sounds like a minor thing, but if you like your privacy and not to hear talking, it's not. The space is really clean and a very chill and relaxing ambiance. The location is in a shopping center, so there is tons of parking available. If you get a great therapist (most are), stick with them and try and book in advance to ensure you will be seen. It can be challenging to get a massage last minute, but not always impossible (but this totally depends - booking in advance is the best rule of thumb). read more
