Stopped by during the weekday for a sandwich at lunchtime. This place was busy with people coming in with orders, to taking orders on the phone or through doordash. We ordered the reuben pastrami and it was delicious. Just the right amount of meat and saukerkaut to make the sandwich just salty enough. They give a good amount of the mayo based dressing but personally, I didn't think it need it. Comes with chips and a pickle. Get the New Yorker! This is by far the best sandwich I've had since moving to Vermont. The rye bread was soft and fresh. The pastrami (pictured) and corned beef is made IN HOUSE!! Having lived in NYC for 10 years this place brought back some memories of one of my favorite delis "Eisenbergs" near the Flatiron building. I got a pastrami with melted cheese, mustard, a pickle on the side and a bag of chips with an ice cold Coke and it hit the spot. The staff was generous and friendly the only thing they were missing (and maybe I missed it) was an old school soda fountain for Lime Rickeys and other classic fountain drinks! The quality of their house made meat is exceptional, and the care they put into each of their sandwiches is apparent with every bite. I have been to Ernie's many times but this is my first Yelp review of it. I usually get the same thing which is Pastrami on rye with yellow mustard sometimes with cheese sometimes without, depending on my mood. My wife gets the corn beef brisket usually on rye but she will switch it up. They have a couple other meats including roast beef, turkey and usually a couple specials too. I have never had a reason to stray from the pastrami or maybe split my wife's brisket since these are the best in Vermont and compare to any in NY or Montreal. If you question this make the trip and try it, you will be eating these words and many sandwiches from Ernie's in the future. I do want to add not only are the sandwiches great Ernie is there making your sandwich everyday and he is the nicest guy you can meet. The other lady the works there everyday, who I have not figured out if she is related or not, is equally as nice as well. So you get a great sandwich made by super nice people! Excellent friendly spot for a sandwich or soup. We went in with friends and kids. They will offer non-menu items like a gooey grilled cheese for little ones. I had the corned beef sandwich on rye with spicy mustard. The difference in all the meats is that they are made in house. The chef is right in the front window carving the sandwich meats. As for the corned beef, perfect texture and flavor while not being too fatty. This spot is perfect if you want a hearty meal after hiking the Long Trail or skiing the mountains. Straight forward menu. Place your order and you can watch the meats carved. The butternut cheese soup was also spiced well without an overpowering cheddar flavor. read more

I can never get there on a weekday, but my husband was in the area so he brought home two sandwiches. First impression? Where' the beef? 'Very underloaded sandwiches! And the meat was in little pieces as it would be for hash, not in slices. The corned beef was very fatty but tasted good. The coleslaw (I asked for on the side) was so skimpy, that it was barely enough to cover the sandwich. The bread was very good and very fresh. The pastrami was leaner but did not have much flavor.In fact, it lacked the delicious flavor of pastrami altogether. The sour pickle was okay, but I much prefer half sours. The potato chips were totally stale. I am disappointed and very surprised at all the raves from fellow Yelpers. I conclude y'all have not been to Katz's Deli in Manhattan or Carnegie Deli - or any other REAL delicatessen. The difference is oasis vs. desert. read more

Since I do not live in Rutland, I called them during business hours and left a detailed message. No one called back. I called again and left a detailed message. Still no call back.
