It's a family-owned local business, and when we walked in the mom, dad, daughter, and grandpa were all working together--it was incredibly sweet to see. They greeted us so enthusiastically and genuinely helped us decide what to order. After we ordered, they brought our food to the table and continued checking in to make sure everything was good. I had two of the best sandwiches of my life at the Sandwich Shoppe, a family-owned small business in downtown Rutland. The Big Robin, a popular sandwich, was sublime. Consisting of grilled chicken salad, bacon, and honey mustard on toasted wheat bread, this was so utterly delicious. It was a great combination of savory and sweet and different textures. I also loved the eggplant parm sub. The eggplant parm itself was perfection, and it went so well on the toasted roll. The hospitality from the owners was one of the best parts of the experience. The duo was absolutely warm and kind. They were also so friendly with our children. I wish I had more stomach space and time in Rutland to try more of the options. This is a funky place right in the main downtown area of Rutland. It's very definitely a family-owned and operated place, and they go out of their way to welcome you and engage you when you walk in the door. This isn't just an assembly line of sandwiches to send you on your way. It's small, but there are a few tables inside. Immediately after walking into the sandwich shop I was met with the most Italian "Hey how you doing" I've ever heard. After recommendations from the owners I decided to get the Italian Stallion sub and it was the greatest Italian sub I've ever had. Ok, so yeah, I've never been to a place that had so many sandwich/sub/wrap/burger choices in my entire life. Basically, just get ready to be overwhelmed if you plan of looking at their entire chalkboard menu as it seems to go on for weeks. If you want friendly service at a mom and pop owned business (thank you, brother...you'll know what I mean once you visit) literally, and you want a quality sandwich/sub etc., then you should definitely visit. This place has been open for decades, so they obviously know how to get it done. Prices are respectfully in line with the portion size and inside in which to sit and I did a to go order so I didn't have time to check to see if they have WiFi. Their unisex bathroom is in the basement, and yeah, it's kinda weird going down there. I ordered a meatball sub for myself (about 7 bucks) and a corned beef reuben for my lady. We both enjoyed them and would order them again. Meatballs were quite large, had to be homemade and the sauce was excellent. Melty sharp provolone was requested and received and was a part of what was definitely a fresh made roll. Smartly, they served it inside wax paper which was then inside aluminum foil and this kept it nice and hot without it sticking to the aluminum foil at all. Overall the meatball sub didn't look huge, but I could only finish half of it at once. My wife said she really liked her reuben, which was also much too big to finish in her first sitting; she said it actually reheated pretty well in the toaster oven too, though I'm not thinking so about the sauerkraut...but she said it was good. Her sandwich was also about 7 bucks. Chips are extra as are bottled sodas, etc. from the refrigerated cases. I'll be back and will be ready to have my brain scrambled again by so many different menu choices. Right now I'm kinda leaning toward a Juicy Lucy. Can't wait! read more

Founded in 1979, It is still a family run business with the 90-year-old matriarch taking orders. Everyone here was so, so kind and welcoming and took extra care to make sure each order was correct and delivered with care.
