Every time I come to Rutland I know that I'm about to eat a heavier than I normally do. While there are some really delicious meals in this town, it will most likely be beer, wings, pizza and the like for my time here. Yellow Deli is the lighthouse in a land of meat and potatoes. And for the record, this isn't rated high from me because it's one of the very few "healthy" restaurants nearby. It's rated high because the food is just really good. You can tell that the food here was made from love and fresh, simple ingredients. This is a very interesting restaurant. We didn't know the backstory going in, but from our first steps in we knew something was different. The restaurant itself has a very rustic feel, and we later found out all of the decorations were made by the staff. Full disclosure- we did find out while sitting there, that it's owned by the Twelve Tribes, make of that what you will. We had lovely staff helping us out and the food wasn't bad. So this place is unique in that it is owned and operated by a bunch of hippies living together in a hostel. You can tell the attitude is very lax and the staff gets annoyed when customers walk up to the register to pay for their meals. But if you wait for someone to come around to your table you'll be stuck in the cafe all day. Also, I intended to grab some dessert to go, but our waitress didn't give me the opportunity to ask before she dropped our check on the table and said, "here ya go," as if we were the literal bane of her existence lol. The food is fine. Soups are decent, sourdough is AWFUL--super dense like it's under-proofed or something. The upside is that the hot beverages are delicious. read more

Yes, this is run by a religious group. Some people care, others don't. I'm one of the people who do not care. They have AMAZING food and an amazing atmosphere! My husband and I love the food here so much that we decided to stop by other Yellow Deli locations when traveling to other states and even abroad. It's a great community. The documentaries that were done on the Seven Tribes is extremely biased. There's always two sides of the story. I think this "tribe" is doing a great job running their owns farms and their own restaurants. Love that they provide home grown food when it's available. read more

Loved the interior Has a warm relaxed feeling to the place. They gave out samples of different tea and have a nice range of tea chai lattes drinks for the tea lovers. So was their sweet potato pound cake. Love the fact that they are open 24hrs so can get a tea latte anytime for your craving. If I lived around would definitely be my go to place. This place is fantastic. The inside is expertly crafted and a must see, very cozy and artistic. The prices are beyond fair and the food was delicious. We had the chili with artisan buckwheat gluten free bread that was warm from the oven and a cashew and cranberry salad that came with cranberry walnut bread and they also had root beer on tap that was very tasty. If you are staying at the hikers hostel in Rutland beware. This is a cult run establishment with unpaid workers some of whom have checked pasts (criminal history etc) although Most of the workers are kind and hospitable and I can see how a stay at the hostel can be pleasant and uneventful but this was not the experience of my friend and I during our brief stay on 6/13/23. We have been hiking the long trail and intended on spending the night in Rutland for a shower and resupply but ended up needing to fleeing to the comfort inn at 2 am in fear for our safety. My and my friend were the only ones staying in my hostel room and one worker was in charge of seeing to the hostel. He is middle aged with a long greyish beard long stringy hair maybe 5'10 with a wiry frame. He also served us food and we interacted with him sporadically without the day with nothing notable besides noticing he had a slightly awkward demeanor; a little bit off but it is a weird place after all so we didn't think anything of it. Anyways, around 10pm we turned the lights out and laid on our beds on our phones and the man comes in and shuffles past us goes into the bathroom for a minute and then leaves. We figured he was just doing a last sweep because lights out is 10pm. When he came back and did the same thing again a half hour later i was curious but not yet concerned. When he came back a couple more times we began to wonder what he could possibly be doing. We went through all the plausible reasons he might be tending to our room but nothing made sense. By midnight he had come in 3 different times all of which he briefly went into the bathroom before exiting quietly about a minute later. We decided to sit and wait for him to come back. Around 45 mins later at 130 am we were jarred as the door cracked open and he came in to see us sitting on a bed. We asked him what he was doing because it's really late and he said he'd been using the bathroom. We didn't buy it. There was no toilet flush any time and nothing in the toilet. We were too freaked out to go to sleep so we left. I'll never know what that guy's intentions were but I felt something was wrong and I couldn't let it slide. Be safe out there. read more

Hands down the best veggie burger on this planet. From the bun to the texture to the flavor to the toppings, Yellow Deli delivers. I go to Yellow Deli frequently in the summer and I would say it is a fun place (mostly because the veggie burgers are so good). Inside they play some music that makes me feel like I am in​ the countryside and the wall art is beautiful​. The reason why Yellow Deli gets three stars is that supporting Yellow Deli also means supporting Twelve Tribes of Israel. I guess every time you make a purchase you also make a political statement, but this is extremely direct. I would suggest you google Twelve Tribes (the group that owns the Yellow Deli) before going here and see how you feel after reading. But hey, a good veggie burger is a good veggie burger. read more

I stumbled upon this cafe with some friends when I was visiting Rutland a couple of years ago. The food was good, lots of vegetarian options and everything was natural and/or organic. I noticed a lot of folks eating there were wearing similar outfits and looked similar to the Amish including the waitstaff. Our waitress sat down with us while we were eating and made herself at home. She then proceeded to ask us about our religious affiliations, which I found a little strange. A little while later we witnessed a huge group of people attending the restaurant gather together in a corner of the restaurant to sing and dance. Which I also found a little strange to say the least. We left the cafe quite confused. After returning to Ludlow, I looked up the restaurant on the internet and found out that they are owned and operated by the Twelve Tribes of Israel, which sounded a lot like a religious cult. Anyway, if you're feeling like you need to get away from the real world and possibly join a cult and you also have some dietary restrictions, this is the place for you. read more

If I could give it -5 I would. First of all our wait person was a real dip. Showed no interest in us or her job. Secondly the menu says MAKE YOUR OWN SANDWICH. But they couldn't make me a BLT ???? So we ordered a turkey sandwich with swiss and lettuce & tomato. What part of that order would make you think I wanted the sandwich lathered in butter and toasted??? It was so greasy, it was disgusting. I just ate the insides with a fork. My friend ordered a green salad with vinaigrette on the side. The dressing was as thick as paste. The salad had at least a dull cup of croutons in it. And they were the cheap little cubes you buy in the grocery store in a box. Ick. Next to the salad was a thick slab of bread SOAKING in butter! Unbelievable. This place has awful. We imaged the cook in the kitchen must have a paint brush sitting in a bucket of melted butter and he just brushes everything that goes by. This place was awesome! Super quaint and cozy, came on a particularly cold day and got sat right next to the fire. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating. The butternut squash soup was a special that day and frankly the absolute best I've EVER had. I also had the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was perfect, a little heavy on the garlic mayo but incredibly tasty, the bread was soft and toasty. I LOVE The Yellow Deli! They have the best atmosphere and some of the best food in this town. The staff is always so pleasant to us and are always so punctual. After a long night, I used to go in with friends at like 3a.m. and they were still very happy to assist us.
