Hands on Moving worked great for me and my family. I was provided the best quote in the area, which was twice as low as local moving companies. Tajah in the office, was able to accommodate me despite the many last minute hick-ups and always with a great attitude. We contacted Hands on Moving in November and they sent someone out to give us an estimate. We were quoted $1,370, and given they were significantly cheaper than the other estimate and had great reviews online we chose to go with them. The men who came to do our job were very friendly however that is where anything positive I have to say about this company ends. First, the movers damaged SO much of our furniture. Little care was taken to ensure the furniture wasn't damaged and even worse, our floors, walls, and door frames in the new house were damaged as well. To make matters worse, at the end of the first day, we were asked to pay $1,980 and told they weren't going to be able to finish the job and would need to return the following day at a rate of $110/hour. When my husband spoke with Xzavier, the owner, to explain our outrage regarding the extreme difference in cost, he agreed to give us a "deal" of $140 for the second day. The problem with that deal is they were only willing to make one run with the truck, because they said they had another job, so we were forced to rent a truck to move the rest of our things that they left!!! That means we're out well over $2,000 for the move with this company!!! Xzavier contacted me after I sent him the pictures of all of the damage to say that someone would be coming out to see if he could repair our items. I asked him what would happen if they couldn't be repaired as some of the damage is significant. He said I would get the $.60/pound and "at least it was something". I implore you to think twice before using this company if you have furniture you do not want damaged! The furniture repairman came today and made every attempt to repair the damaged pieces but almost all of the damage is still noticeable. AND we still have to repaint our stairwell and door jams ourselves. Moving is stressful enough without using a company that doesn't know what they're doing or care to make things right with their customers when they screw up in multiple ways !!!! We gave Xzavier the opportunity to make this right multiple times but clearly all that matters to him is his bottom line!! read more

Gavin and his crew were excellent. We used another New Haven mover (Studs) on our prior move and this move was significantly better -- and less expensive. I appreciated the reminder emails in advance as well as the confirmation call the day prior to our move. i do not like making a broadbrush statement.However most moving company's park their trucks on the sidewalk. Therefore strollers or wheelchairs can not pass. We have to go on the street which is dangerous. NOT this company they park properly so everyone can use the sidewalk. I felt as though my furniture was being held hostage while an additional $45 fee was negotiated. I had an OKAY but somewhat frustrating move today with Hands on Moving. My move was scheduled to start during an 8AM-9AM window on Sunday morning. I was ready to start at 8AM and received a call at 845 that they were having issues with their truck and would arrive at 10AM. 10AM came and went and around 1030 I started calling and texting to check the status but no one was answering, which is infuriating. It takes 5 seconds to send a text. Finally around 1045 I received a call back to say that the truck had arrived. When I shared my frustration over the phone I was told "I'm really busy", which is probably the most unhelpful response I can imagine. As a concession they offered a fourth guy for free. During the loading portion I was disappointed to see the same guy talking on his cellphone, leaving the apartment to the truck with nothing in his hands, and just generally milling around at times. For a move that started late, was only 40 mins away, and over $1,100 I expected some hustle. I was ready to work and was disappointed not everyone on the team didn't show up to do the same. The final straw was that they didn't bring any moving blankets! We have a nice wood bedroom set and coffee table and they were trying to put it on the truck with absolutely no protection. I had to give very specific instructions on how it should be wrapped to prevents scratches. Given that there were no moving blankets they had to breakdown cardboard boxes and lay them on top. I then had to tell them to wrap them in plastic to keep the cardboard secure. It looked absolutely nothing like their promotional picture on this Yelp page where everything is wrapped and secure in blue covering. Mr. Lazy even tried to load our $1,200 leather recliner with nothing on it as well. Luckily, we had extra bubble wrap laying around and asked that it be wrapped. When all was said and done I was disappointed to see a few dings but not surprised. Overall, Hands on Moving could have been better. Given all the great reviews I expected a company that alleviated the challenge of a move not add to it. read more

The comment from the owner is a lie, and he knows it! I had a call from the company yesterday to discuss a claim I had filed with my mother's home insurance company to cover an antique mirror that one of the movers damaged before even packing it. The question was had I filed a claim with the insurance for the move, which I had not because it was only for $.60/lb. not being listed as a special item for the additional coverage. The owner had offered to have someone fix the mirror at his expense that was not an antique restoration specialist, so I had declined in favor of filing the claim with my mother's home insurance that would only use an antique restoration specialist. All of this is known by the owner who in his comment is denying that I used his company! If that isn't the height of sleaziness and an outright effort to deceive the public, than I don't know what is! Do not use this company if you value your belongings, especially if you have fine furniture and/or antiques they hire just anyone as movers and don't train them to handle the items properly. read more

I used Hands On Moving to bring two sectional sofas to a client's home. The guys were great. Very helpful and brought the furniture right into the room they belong. This is more than regular delivery service that must be discussed beforehand. They laid down blankets and runners from the garage to the room and took away the shipping boxes once I opened each container. The guys were professional and very pleasant in front of the client. I was absolutely, positively, superlatively satisfied with Hands On Moving. I hired a team of 3 to move across town. The guys showed up promptly; they were dressed professionally; they were super nice; and they treated my things as though they were their own. I have lots of very old, fragile family furniture. They were so patient with me as I worried over every piece, but they knew exactly what they were doing. Everything was delivered exactly as it arrived. They even helped me put little felt pads on the bottom of every piece. I hope I never ever have to move again, but if I do, I'll call them first! FYI, they have kind of a weird phone system--it involves a posh British woman (robot) who directs your call, but they very quickly call or email back. read more

Great moving company. This was the second time I used them for a more and I would use them again. We lived on the fourth floor of a building with no elevators. Having a skilled crew was crucial. The crew arrived on time and moved all of our things efficiently. We packed in a way such that the movers didn't have to do anything other than move our things. Prep work is key in any move. These movers were really incredible. I cannot say enough nice things about them. They showed up exactly on time and were extremely professional. This was tough move-- my mother was moving from her home to an assisted living community. The movers were so thoughtful and helpful. The main foreman helped me to think through what furniture would fit in her new space and really saved us so much trouble as we were definitely bringing too much stuff! It would him been a disaster if we had brought everything-- he took the time to talk us through it, having moved other families with similar moves, he was aware of the space constraints better than we were. When we got the new apartment, we had the bedroom furniture set up one way and then realized that it didn't have the bed near the call button-- he and his crew rearranged the furniture to make it all fit. Sorry to not be able to give these guys a better review because I had high hopes based on the other reviews! Unfortunately my crew was unprofessional, did not communicate well (showed up an hour later than they said they would, and they never said "hello" when answering the phone or "goodbye" when ending a phone conversation, just started talking or hung up), and did not do the best job of moving my stuff (when they weren't standing around seemingly doing nothing, things were constantly being dropped on the floor). Luckily I pack very well at this stage of my life and nothing seems to have been broken with one exception. But honestly all of this aside, I might have given these guys three stars had it not been for the bed. The biggest reason I needed a moving crew was to have someone take apart and put back together my bed. I explicitly asked about this when I called for my quote, and mentioned to every person I talked to about the move that they would need to do this and they would need to bring a drill. Everyone assured me this would be fine. Well, the crew arrived on moving day without a drill and proceeded to hack my bed apart with a wrench. When it came time to put the bed back together, it was done so poorly that the first time I sat on it, it collapsed. I called the guys back and they put it back together again - only this time, it has a sag in the middle because they put the middle bar too low. I thought maybe this wouldn't be a big deal but after one night I realized the bed was un-sleepable. I called the owner the next day and he assured me someone would be out to fix it ASAP but not that day. I went out of town for a few days, and when I returned, called the manager in the morning. No one picked up, l left a message, and no one returned my call. I had to call again and again until finally at about 4:30 PM someone reached out... saying some guys would be out the next day. Another sleepless night passed but thankfully the next morning some guys came out and finally fixed it. I am so disappointed because this is literally the only reason I hired a moving company. If you don't need someone to care for your furniture (also echoing another reviewer - despite telling you otherwise, they will not wrap your furniture) or hustle as if they aren't trying to run up the clock and scam more money out of you, these guys might be for you. This time I needed a very heavy mechanical chair moved from East Haven to my office in New Haven and they were able to fit me in right away and the move was perfect. A few months ago, I needed a dumpster at my house...one phone call and it was delivered to my driveway for a great price. Another recent service was junk removal...we had to rip up our basement carpeting after a flood and had about 30 trash bags. A truck arrived the next day to remove them. I have referred Hands On Moving to many of my friends and clients over the years and have heard nothing but raves for their moving services. Like others recently, I had a confusing experience. Hands On Moving was recommended to me by a friend who had a great experience with them. Mine was not so great. Unfortunately, I felt that there were more "cons" than "pros" in this particular experience. I get the sense that perhaps the company has grown a bit bigger than expected a bit too fast and they are having a hard time managing that. I really wanted this to go well, and I can see that many people have had very positive experiences. PROS: 1. Some of the movers were amazing. Junior, in particular, was incredibly kind and professional! But, in general, most of the crew was very charismatic and friendly. 2. Almost everything made it (although, see cons below), and I did have a lot of stuff to pack up. CONS: 1. My final cost was nearly twice what I was quoted ($1300 instead of $700 - a very significant difference). I was told that this was because I had an unexpected amount of packing. But, I was originally told that packing was a flat fee, which seemed too good to be true. It was. When Xavier said that it was "too much" for them to pack, I asked why he gives out a flat fee quote without assessing volume. No response (well, a long-winded response about things off-topic, but no actual answer to the question). I was also told that the movers had to touch things that most people don't make them touch, like two boxes of tampons and sanitary pads in the bathroom. Are you serious? This comment was one of the most misogynistic, ridiculous things I have heard. I was really charged extra because I requested a "full pack" and then was told that bathroom cabinets aren't packed, and the guys were offended about touching some boxes of tampons? I mean, really?? 2. No inventory was made, and boxes were not labeled by room. When I asked Xavier about that, he said that this was a "special request" and that I should have been directing the movers. That is not the way I understood the process would occur. Hands on Moving are the professional movers. I should not have to direct anything. He then told me about the years of experience he has moving (which I don't doubt). But, I have also moved quite a few times and have hired professional movers for each move, and boxes get labeled automatically by every other company I've used. 3. Because there was no inventory, there was no way to know how many boxes I had, how many a "typical" move should have, and then no way to understand why I was being charged twice as much as I was quoted, despite the amount of packing that was being done while I was already being charged for moving. 4. A wheel from my bed frame was lost, and Xavier suggested I go to Goodwill to get a new one. It cost less than $10 on Amazon to replace. Had they offered to give me a $10 wheel when I paid $1300 for the move, I would have at least felt like I had some kind of human response from the company. 5. I had a variable number of people working on my move. Three showed up and had no idea I had requested a full pack, despite my reservation from months earlier. It was the FIRST PACKING JOB that they had ever worked on. This would be no problem, except that again, if packing takes too long (although a time is never specified as to "too long," you end up paying for it). One immediately stopped working for an hour because he was ill. A replacement showed up later, but had clearly been woken up, and was slooooooooow. And again, if packing takes too long (although a time is never specified as to "too long," you end up paying for it). Guys got switched out during the day. I did get a "refund" for 30 minutes of moving time because I had a reduced team later on in the afternoon during the switches, but they happened so often it was pretty confusing. And, the "refund" came when people were still packing despite moving me onto "billable" moving hours. 6. Because a different crew finished the job than started it (entirely a different crew), the trash that the morning crew found in the van and stashed on the side of the house I was moving out of was not removed by the afternoon crew. My landlord was really not happy about that. They did return to remove that trash the next day after I called to ask them to do so, however. read more

The guys were great, but i feel like having them pack and unpack wears them out too much prolonging the move. My husband is military and we've moved alot. We even had less this time then any other time. Everytime we have moved its takin a max 2 hrs to load 2 hrs to unload. This move took 7 hrs and we moved only 5 miles away. We also had everything boxed and in only 2 rooms of the house to make it quick. Again they were great but its alot for one move i guess turning a 4 hr move into 7 hours. They also didnt try to organize when we told them the room and just put everything in the most awkward spot so at 9pm when they were finally done are bed couldnt move because 2 dressers were blocking it and we had to sleep on the floor and i was 9 months pregnant. I probably wouldnt hire again because it cost $900 bucks with a coupon to move and when we just moved 6 months prior with more stuff we hired two companies one to load and unload and it was only $450 combined at the same hr rate with no coupon. Again because they weren't exhausted. I believe thats the biggest problem. They should charge a flat fee instead of hourly because they slowed down and were exhausted by the time they had to unload. Also because of us having a baby so soon we unpacked so slow. We realized a month later one of our tvs was cracked down the middle. I'm also missing my 3 foot gold bedroom mirror. The thing was big and you can't miss it so im not sure if it broke and they hide it thinking we wouldn't notice or what. ,but thats my review. read more

I did not have a typical moving request. I have a two car garage and I needed things to be reorganized. That small issue did not stop the Hand On Moving team from doing a superb job. They moved everything out of the garage and neatly and orderly put everything back in. When it was done, they threw out loads of empty boxes for me, hauled away broken items and other larger items that I would not have been easily able to dispose of, and overall, provided amazing customer service.
