The owner, Pete, was very helpful and made sure to ask exactly what I was looking for before making any recommendations. He immediately found me a helmet to use for a test ride and ultimately sent me off with three different options around my price point to try. After each ride, he asked what I liked/didn't like and made adjustments from there. I appreciated how much Pete trusted my perception of each ride -- he never made me feel out of my depth even though I'm no bike aficionado. He was friendly and absolutely fantastic to work with! I was looking to build up my bike after months of searching for parts. Given how busy the current market is, I had to look for a new shop unless I wanted to wait 3 weeks for an opening, so I found Handy. The group seemed nice and we're definitely happy to take the bike and assured me they were able to do the build. Well....not so much. There were delays in the build, which I wouldn't blame on them, however the work down was horrible. Initially the bars were loose and literally moved during my first ride, the crank wasn't tensioned properly, and the breaks were soft. Eventually, the bike stated to creak from every where. So I took it to the best mechanic in the area to get it fixed bc I had no confidence in the guys at Handy. Here's what he said. "Will, Your bike is ready to go. Here are the service notes: - Hoods were at two different heights. Evened out and fully secured hoods. $15 - Stem face plate gaps top to bottom were not even . Removed stem face plate. Applied grip paste to contact surfaces, anti-seize to bolt threads, torqued to spec. $15 - Kogel bottom bracket right bearing rough. New bearing on its way, aiming for Wednesday but likely Friday. Replaced bearing. Added 5x 1mm spacers (4 on right, one on left). $60 labor, $7.50 spacers - Removed rear tire, trued and tensioned wheel. Several left spokes were detensioned. Overall tension was a bit low as well, 950N right side. Increased to 1150-1200N right. Replaced tape, added 1oz sealant. $60 labor, $3 tape, $2 sealant. - Found both brake levers to have excessive travel. Reset caliper pistons to allow system to self adjust properly. Front caliper bolts were barely hand tight, Torx heads were rounded out. Replaced bolts, aligned caliper. $30 - Rear caliper had slight wetness at hose connection. Found compression nut to be extremely loose. Tightened more than one full turn to reach torque spec. Checked front hose fitting, same issue. Made a video. $30 - Test rode bike. Heard no noise except for the occasional seatpost noise due to its damage. - $210 labor, $12.50 parts. As you can see, I came across a couple issues with your brakes. I felt compelled to take care of them on safety grounds. The fittings not being tight is really dangerous. The hose could have disconnected with a hard enough squeeze. Please please don't go back to whoever worked on this prior." Imagine my surprise to hear they stripped bolts, broke my seatpost, and left the bike in a dangerous condition? And how much do you all think Handy will refund me for this? I kinda bet nothing. Stay away!!! read more

I had a great experience here. I definitely appreciated how friendly the employees were and how helpful they were. I came in to get a pedal removed and a wheel hub tightened. Ended up getting two hubs tightened, a pedal removed, and new ones installed. Also got to do a little bike talk while I was there. Pete was wonderful and helped me throughout the repair process. He was right on top of the repair effort and kept me informed and even sent pictures of problems he encountered throughout the process. I was looking for what I would call a bike tune-up and came across Handy Bikes on Yelp. All I can say is the little things that make a customer for life. I made the appointment (on Sunday - same day), show up and the Tech (sorry I can't remember his name) did a visual inspection first, then looked over the bike and check the tires. Told me when I can pick up the bike and then said the first step is to wash the bike. Picked the bike up, did a test ride in the parking lot. Made a few tweaks base on how I was riding the bike. Scenario: biking home from an exhilarating Nats game -- Harper was tossed for getting in the ump's face -- and I go right over a pot hole and get a flat. As I'm cursing to myself while walking my bike I look to my left and see a strange green vehicle on the side of the road. "Handy bikes"? I parked my bike close to here, hopped on a bike share and rode home. Experience: the following day I took the metro back to my bike and walked it up to the fellas outside the enigmatic green truck I'd seen the prior night. By golly it wasn't a mirage! I'm new to cycling, and had some chain rub going on. Tried to fix it on my own (YouTube) and just screwed everything up even worse. Made a quick appointment and brought the bike in. Peter diagnosed and fixed the problem quickly--all while describing what he was doing, and showed me how I could fix it in my own. When testing out the bike he gave me some pointers on shifting & riding, even made some adjustments for a better fit (no extra charge). Very reasonably priced. More importantly, a genuinely nice guy, trustworthy, and you can tell he really wants his customers to enjoy their bike. I took my bike in after a hard fall and after another bike shop did a poor job of putting on a wireless odometer. Lydia, and Pete, the owner worked on my bike. They noticed things I didn't. I spent a lot more than intended but I know the bike is in good shape. Unlike some other shops you will learn something about bikes and your bike specifically from just watching them do repairs and the nuggets they share. I would recommend this shop for hardcore riders and for newbies who might be intimidated going into other shops. You don't feel rushed in and out. They operate out of a warehouse area. Parking is plentiful and you have plenty of room to maneuver without worrying about hitting another car parked closely in the next spot... To get there, turn on the street and keep going past the U-Haul office on the left. Go almost to the dead end and then turn left. I saw the Handy Bikes truck at the U-Haul office and figured it was there. But you have to keep driving. If you do get lost you can ask for directions in the U-Haul office. read more

I brought my beloved (and busted) beater bike to Pete & his team this week for the basic tune up & cleaning package, plus some other repairs. Dupont area bike shops estimated the work & parts would cost over $250 but Handy Bikes fixed it up for a fraction of the cost. The bike feels 1,000 times better & Pete let me know what to come back for but didn't go crazy replacing everything. I'm also a big fan of their scheduling system. I've waited over an hour in other bike shops, but they're quick & attentive. Even if you're not in the Navy Yard area, Handy Bikes is worth the trip. They usually pop up a couple blocks from the metro & soon the "bike truck" will be ready to hit the road & pop up in more neighborhoods. read more

I learned of Handy Bikes from a buddy of mine and came here for a full tune-up on my brand new fixie. My buddy came with 2 fully geared road bikes for full tune-ups as well. It was very easy to get to Pete's and he was very flexible and accommodating to our schedule. We originally came to Pete because his prices are wayyyyyy better than your regular bike shop. I was pleasantly surprised with his level of courtesy and professionalism! He told both of us that we didn't need full tune-ups (we came for full tune-ups and he could definitely charged us for full tune-ups). I ended up getting a new crankset installed and my rear tire trued. When the bikes were finished a day or two later (he was flexible with the dates), I came to pick up the bike with no problem. He was prompt and I didn't have to wait for him. I'll be coming back here for all the work I'll need on my bike and have already recommended him to 2 of my buddies. read more

I decided to get my new (to me) single speed bike looked at after about a year after buying it off a friend. First bike in about a decade, and I've realized I know nothing about how to maintain it. Brought two bikes here in the past three months. One that is 15 years old and another that is probably 20 years old that have been stored indoors in my parent's garage. Used to be awesome. Handy Bikes used to be great...Pete was like having a personal friendly bike mechanic who you was on your side and did great work. Now it's just a bike shop, except you have to make an appointment. You can't just buy a part from Pete and have it installed, his mechanics do the bundling rip-off, where you have to buy a $40 tune-up you don't need or want just to have the part installed. So, I left with an expensive install and having to undo screwed-up adjustments that I didn't want but was forced to pay for. Yeah, sure, I'll make another appointment and ride across town to use the "warranty". The whole thing with Handy Bikes was that you knew you weren't getting scammed. Now any decent brick-and-mortar shop now has more to offer. read more
