Tbh I've loved this place for a while, but this last bagel I got was totally unacceptable. Instead of toasting it, both halves were completely blackened - incinerated, basically - and inedible. It tasted like biting into charcoal with cream cheese on it. I had already left and gone home when I realized it, but am hoping it can be made right by someone in ownership here because wow - paying as much as you do, the quality control should be a lot better and if the bagels are burnt, they should remake and not serve something inedible to paying customers. read more

Hank's bagels are delicious! And their sandwiches are out of this world! I've had their lox sandwich and their smoked whitefish sandwich. The first one on a rosemary salt bagel, and the second on a pretzel bagel. I love the use of salted cucumbers slices, fresh dill, and a few slices of pickled red onion. The smoked white fish is close to a mousse consistency and it is some of the best I've ever had. The plain cream cheese is not overly heavy and a perfect pairing with the smoked white fish as well as the lox. The portions are so plentiful that each sandwich last me two meals. WOW! I just had a rosemary sea salt bagel with the fried egg, bacon, tomato, and cheddar, and it was the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had in my life! I have been coming here consistently since the grand opening and I really want to love it, but execution of the sandwiches has gone downhill...Oftentimes the placement of the lox is really sloppy and there is WAY too much cream cheese. Also, toasting is not sufficient even when double-toasting is requested. It just seems lazy. The staff is super friendly and any bagel shop is a welcome addition to Calabasas, but I hope they can fix things. Other requests would be to provide WiFi to guests, espresso drinks, and make the egg bagel an everyday item! While it's a style choice, I'd prefer if the bagels were less chewy and more crisp. read more

We have a neighbor that brought us Hank's bagels from Burbank and we had never heard of them, but they were awesome. Now we have one here in our Calabasas backyard! Been in at least 5 times and it never disappoints. Everything remains my go to, but you'll never have a biali quite like Hank's, and if poppy seed is your thing, theirs is amazing. And I love the way they make the egg to put on the bagel- no microwaved fake scramble here. And perhaps the best part is how genuinely friendly the staff are. Love this place. read more

"Hanks...a deli of sorts." Words etched on the glass doors of the small strip mall out in Calabasas. On this maiden voyage, I decided to dip in on a weekday right as they opened to get the freshest around. I was greeted by a wonderful cheery and friendly woman who asked me about my day, answered a few Bagel 101 questions I had, and provided exceptional customer service. I decided to try the Rosemary Salt bagel which had a nice balance of the two flavors, wrapped in a soft inner bread and a crispy outer layer. They also have wonderful sandwich options as well. The coffee is also pretty tasty. Hank's also controls the quantity throughout the day and are open until 2pm or when they sell out. Plenty of parking and a few tables outside to soak up that Basas energy. I'll be back. read more

My wife asked me to grab her a bagel so I ran down the street to a new place that opened. I've heard mixed opinions about this place. Many of us here are NY transplants so we know a good bagel. First thing I notice is while the guy in the back is making it he and a co worker are eating while preparing food . I asked for a bagel toasted with salmon schmere . I brought it to my wife to get some brownie points seeing it's Valentine's Day. First thing out of her mouth is it's not toasted. Someone brought these into work last week. I must say, these may be the best bagels that I have eaten. I am going back next week to get more. These toast up extra crispy on the outside like sourdough bread toasty on the outside soft inside. It has a bit of sourdough taste at least the one that I ate. I happen to love sourdough. So disappointing and does not at all live up to the hype. I ordered an onion bagel, toasted, with lox schmear. I can honestly say this is the worst version of this that I've ever had anywhere. First of all, the bagel was not toasted AT ALL in spite of my request. The bagel itself was extremely doughy and chewy (not to mention completely lacking in any onion flavor). Worse still, the lox schmear was a joke. Appeared to be super whipped up cream cheese (like air) with something added in to make it slightly pink. Zero taste of lox. Zero taste period. There is a ton of parking since this place is located in a shopping center. The staff is sooo nice and the service was amazing. When I first saw Hank's opening up here near the Commons, I immediately thought Really? Another bagel shop? But after trying a Parmesan garlic with the most generous amount shmear today I am thoroughly impressed by their bagels. Beautiful and crusty on the outside and soft, fluffy and flavorful on the inside? I'm sold. This is probably one of the best bagels I've had in my life and I've had bagels in both NY and Montreal. It's bagel magic here. I feel like their bagels will now reign supreme for the valley. Lots of bagel choices in LA and pretty much all of them are good, but Hank's really impressed me Their number 3 bagel sandwich with Hank's gravlax or Nova lox, scallion cc, capers, radish, pickled onion, salted cucumber, sprouts, tomato and dill might just be the best sandwich I've ever had. Not the best bagel sandwich, the best sandwich- it's that good. Get it on a Jalapeño everything cheese bagel and give your taste buds an overdose! My wife went Monday morning and raved about the great breakfast sandwich (#1) with an amazing bagel. When she took me for Lunch Saturday, we had a different experience. I got the #3 on a salted rosemary bagel. The lox were great as was the entire inside of the sandwich. The bagel, however, while well seasoned, was otherwise shockingly mediocre to pretty lousy. The outside of the bagel was so tough that my jaw was sore for about 20 minutes after eating it. I don't know if it was a bad batch, a stale bagel, or this is what people should expect here, but pretty inexcusable lack of quality control for a place with "Bagels" in the name. I'd rather just get what was in between the bagel and put it on a grocery store bagel. My wife was also disappointed with her sandwich and told me it was nothing like when she went earlier in the week. Mixed feeling on the sandwich. I wouldn't be against trying this again and hoping this visit was a fluke, but I can't see myself choosing to go back here. read more
