I have been here a few times, and every time I visit, menu always different. So, I got Uji Matcha Latte and Uji Matcha hazelnut cake which I never tried. Cake was very good. There were layer of matcha mousse with hazelnut crisp at the bottom and side was covered by thin slice of matcha hazelnut chocolate. It was not too sweet, but, sweetness was pefect. Presentation was very beautiful. I really liked this cake. Highlight was Uji Matcha Latte! It had very bold strong flavor. Sweetness was regular level which was perfect. Size was very generous. I tried the Sunset in Thai cake which had Thai tea sponge cake, Thai tea cremeux, and coconut passionfruit. It was quite a big piece of cake and I enjoyed all the different layers. It was fairly light and not too sweet. For drinks, they had a few mochi drinks that looked interesting and I got the Mochi Longjing Tea which had lots of soft mochi and pretty strong tea flavour. The Super Mango Coconut was also pretty good if you don't want to line up for Macu Tea. Both were $7.99. They have some seating upstairs unlike most bubble tea places these days and there's also free wifi if you need to work or study. Despite their outside appearance, the inside is actually much bigger than I thought and includes an upstairs seating area. The cake was so so good. There's a hard layer of cream on the outside to break through when you get into the cake but it's SO good. The cake is light and airy, and not too sweet. Just discover this tea shop and wow, the inside wall decor was amazingly impressive. They do have two floors which Im looking forward to try it out when they open for dine ins. I was actually looking for dessert luckily they still have some cake left where I ordered four flavours that they packed in a nice fancy box. All the cakes were not sweet which is my type of cakes as well as so aesthetically beautiful, I got the hazelnut matcha roll, chatramue, matcha fog and hokkaido. My favourite would be the hokkaido as its so creamy and tasty the other three are okay but not that flavoursome. Came here on a weekend evening so it was pretty crowded. Ambience is gorgeous, with a split-level upper floor that has more seating and can accommodate larger groups. I had a Hanlin Black Tea Latte and a Strawberry roll cake. The drink was very sweet, but the flavour was kinda meh. The cake was delicious -- with soft sponge, cream, and topped with half a strawberry. I liked that it wasn't overly sweet. It was a little overpriced though, at $8.99 for a pretty small slice. Very aesthetic interior and bubble tea. Prices are ok, bubble tea could be better. I happened to be here when they had their brown sugar pearl macchiato on promotion for $4.70 instead of $6.39. I don't know where they advertised this, as their Instagram is not updated and the promotional sign is inside the cafe. Anyway, for this price, I'd get it again, but for regular price, probably not. I felt like it was on par with Xing Fu Tang's brown sugar pearl milk drink, and it looks very similar too. I tried to go again while the promotion was still on, but they were out of brown sugar pearls. The only substitution they could offer was regular pearls, even though brown sugar pudding costs the same as an add-on ($1 for brown sugar pearl add-on). So that was disappointing. Another downside is they don't have a stamp card. My dad got a hot milk tea, I can't remember which one, and he liked the tea taste, although it was a little on the sweet side. On a side note, I don't know how I feel about having a plastic seal and using a plastic straw to drink hot tea. At least the cup was paper. The interior is very nice and fancy looking. The chairs are comfortable; I could see myself hanging out here for awhile. If they have more promotions, I'd come back to hang out, but other than that, I probably won't come back to try their other drinks. read more

Bubble tea and dessert house with a very polished but comfortable aesthetic. I was a bit let down because I called ahead before visiting to see if it was possible to order any of the sandwiches from their formulé box individually and the person on the phone said it was, but when I arrived and tried to order an individual salmon roe sandwich, they said the sandwiches only came in a set. I don't eat meat so I couldn't eat the other sandwiches in the set, and the croissants which they seem to sell individually also contained meat, so I ended up just getting a drink and cake slice. The drink and cake were very good though, and filling enough on their own, so I didn't leave unhappy. I had their Watermelon Fruit Tea Slush with Cheese and Black Pearls and a slice of Thai Milk Tea Cake. The slush had a nice natural watermelon flavour and the texture wasn't too icy or too watery. They apparently use green tea but the taste of the tea was so subtle I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't expecting it. They gave a nice thick layer of cheese foam and I was actually surprised by how well it went with the watermelon. I got this at 30% sugar which is their minimum sweetness level for this drink and found it to be a nice mild sweetness, I think getting it at full sugar might overwhelm the natural sweetness of the fruit. The Thai Tea Cake is a custard cake on top of a crumb crust. I liked the toasty flavour of the cake and thought it captured the essence of a good Thai tea pretty well. Although this was definitely sweet, I appreciated that it was less sweet than most Western-style desserts. Although they were inconsistent with my sandwich question, the service was super friendly and because they weren't busy when I visited at about 1:30 on a Sunday, they were able to make my drink pretty quickly. The staff were able to answer our questions and offered to give us recommendations. The "panda" drinks have both white and black pearls, but they don't recommend adding pearls to other drinks because they alter the taste. BUT if you are feeling rebellious, you can add black pearls to other drinks for an additional $0.50. Drinks can be a little pricey depending on what your order. They are priced from around $5 - $7 or a little more depending on whether you add pearls or not. We ordered their tea lattes and honestly, the drinks tasted watered down. The tea flavour is weak. This is before the ice melted! The pearls were on the softer side. Maybe the fruity drinks are better? I saw they were cutting real fruits. This place is absolutely beautiful and nothing like other bubble tea place in Richmond in terms of design and ambience. I tried a variety of drinks at Hanlin before and I would say they're definitely on the less sugary side for drinks. I would say you never have to get a drink with 'less sugar' because their drinks are naturally not very sugary. (Aka Healthy!) My favourites are the fruit and tea-related drinks the most. Their Orange Fruit Tea⁠ is THE BEST for a nice hot summer day. It's super refreshing and filled with so many oranges that, if you would like to, you can go home, add more tea/water, and you got yourself another cup cause the oranges are just that flavourful. They also serve cake WHICH IS GREAT cause during the beginning of the lockdown, they were one of the only places to serve cake (and boba). Their cake is pretty decent too. We ordered a matcha latte, panda puer latte and 2 cakes. There are so many bubble tea shops opening it's hard to keep track of them all! I've been to Hanlin twice now, first time to try their black sugar pearl macchiato and today the cheese foam green tea. Taste wise, both were excellent, but to this day I still don't get the hype over black sugar pearl milk. The cheese foam tea was good, their tea flavour is bold and I like how all drinks are customizable in sweetness, even their black sugar drinks. I typically come here for their signature 'panda' series milk tea ('panda' in reference to a 50/50 tapioca pearl to standard pearl ratio). I particular love this series of drinks because they are so great at cooking the pearls to its *prime* chewiness - highly recommend! I tried the Thai milk tea today, I was surprised they don't overwhelm the drink with evaporated milk (a major plus for my evaporated-milk-sensitive-self). Though the drink and pearls tasted great, this drink is priced on the steeper side, approx $6 for a medium sized drink. Another drink I got was the mango slush with cheese. This was a bigger disappointment than the last, my drink was so icy and bland, was only 3/4 full and costed closer to the $9 price point. This is not the drink I'd come back for. So the drinks menu is a hit or miss, but I have to point out that Hanlin is one of the most aesthetically thoughtful bubble tea shops I've been to.
