We were greeted warmly by the ladies at the counter and they patiently waited for us to make our selections. I ordered the brisket platter with smoked Gouda Mac and cheese and braised mustard greens. My brother ordered the shrimp and catfish platter with a double order of fried okra. I don't know if it was the time of day or what, but my brisket was dry and tough. My boyfriend convinced me to try this place again, and I'm glad he did! We ordered to go. I got a double meat combo with sweet potato casserole and mac and cheese. He got the same sides, but with ribs and chicken. Unfortunately, they gave him the wrong order. We received a double meat combo with sausage and beans instead and no ribs. We drive 25 minutes to pick up because we did like this place so much. Tonight my husband gets home with the half order of cheese fries, and I'm questioning if people know that cheese is one of the main ingredients in this. I was lucky to see 3 shreds of cheese on this and BARELY any bbq sauce. So basically I paid $10 for French Fries. Even after adding the small amount of shredded cheese in my fridge that I had, these still were not what I consider CHEESE fries. (Compare my picture to the few others that have been posted in the past) Let's talk about my pulled pork sandwich...since when can pulled pork be picked up with hands like it's a hamburger? That's right - I picked up the entire pork "patty". I'm going to assume the pork was old and they stuck it on the grill. I just don't understand what it's going on with the pork. Hannah Q has the best wings in Baton Rouge. Before you excoriate me or that statement above, let me explain. I love smoked wings. Besides brisket and jalapeno cheese sausage, they are my favorite smoked food. Hannah Q does a wonderful job with theirs and I would rank them only slightly behind Blue Oak in Nola. Hanah Q is located on the now reduced-capacity Government Street. It used to be my go-to shortcut but the traffic is awful thanks to the geniuses who came up with the road diet. But I digress. The point of this rant is to suggest you get here early. Waiting till 12 or later may mean a traffic jam. Ordering is done here at the counter and delivered to your table. The wings come whole so plan on some disassembly at your table. If you are at work, like I always am when I come here, you will need to wash your hands extra well. You will also need to eat with co-workers who won't say anything as you get your hands dirty eating wings. The wings are smokey, juicy, and packed with bbq flavor. I do not think they fry after smoking but if they do, it doesn't ruin the wing. I do not like overcooked or super crispy wings. I like smoked wings and Hannah Q delivers. These are legit good. If you like blue cheese with your wings, their version is different than the typical one and is also great. I don't know what makes it different but you will know what I mean when you order it. The brisket is among the best I have had in Baton Rouge. BR does not have a lot of good BBQ so it is nice to get real brisket here. My one complaint with Hannah Q is the sauce. It is way too sweet. While attempting to work with the owner through his assistant, they limited our choices to sides to accommodate my wife's request. I was told no. This is what was discussed 4 months prior to the event and out can't be changed. The owner refused to visit the venue as requested saying I don't go until a few weeks from the event. I advised him there are too many moving parts to our wedding to make time that close to the event. I requested the other 2 sides my wife wants as extras and was never responded too. They want to charge $90 per hour for 2 servers each who can't bring the plates to the tables. The venue is extremely small and with 50 guests out well be better to only have the 2 servers moving about instead of all the guests moving truth a line. Now mind you, there will be only 50 people there in a confined space. I was denied and told in short, oh sorry he can't accommodate you that day. What hideous customer service!! Hanna Q Smokehouse has brought their flavor of quality BBQ to Mid-City! I was familiar with the brand from their original location on Airline Highway in Prairieville, so I was glad to see it open up a second location in the middle of the Government Street Arts and Entertainment District. The Government Street location has a number of great features. They have an interior dining area, divided into two sections. There is an outside covered dining area at the back (with a TV). They have a walk-up window on the side, which is great for grabbing a call-in order. There are even some small tables out front for outdoor dining. Parking is on the side or in the rear. The main attraction is of course the BBQ! It's hard to select a favorite, but I think if I had to do so I would go with the smoked wings. This are extreamly well done, and are flavorful while still being juicy. There are all your favorite BBQ meats, and even smoked turkey for a lighter choice. There are also great sandwiches, my favorite is probably the Pit Sandwich. This towering creation has several meats, and coleslaw, on a toasty bun. There are also fried seafood po-boys, that someone not fond of BBQ, or wanting something different could choose. You can make these a combo with a side and a drink. Another different option are the bowls, which can make a decent lunch. These include my favorite, the BBQ Spaghetti. Other options are the pork roast with rice and gravy, red beans and rice, and Jambalaya. These come with a toast slice. I guess we should mention the sides. These are a bit different than your average BBQ joint. Sure, you can have coleslaw and beans. However, you can also have sweet potato casserole, Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese, Braised Greens, Loaded Potato Salad, and Southern Corn Pudding. There are also the sauces, they have four! So if you are ready to get your BBQ craving satisfied, Hanna Q is a great place to choose. It's a step above the average, and worth checking into. read more

The fries are curly and crispy and the brisket is tender, flavorful, and juicy. I crave it! The other items on the menu I really love are the brisket quesadillas and the smoked wings and these aren't half wings they are full wings. This is a review of my second experience. My first meal was great, so I suggested this to my mother in law. She got the 1/4 chicken, sausage, and ribs. I got the ribs and brisket. When I ate my ribs, they were tough and hard to cut into, like the membrane was still on the bone. The brisket (marbled) was amazing. I live right down the street from this location and I am a to-go regular. I have been getting the same to go order for awhile and that would be the brisket fries and coleslaw as a side. It is usually ready ahead of time and the fries hit the spot when I want something cheesy and meaty. I have gotten it with jalapeños before but I find it to be a little too spicy for my taste. The portion is huge and for me, I can eat it over three meals. The slaw is very unique and I like the bit of extra seasoning that you get with the sauce. Starts with my favorite was the brisket; it was super soft and juicy, you don't even need to chew soft. Next favorite was the burger, very flavorful, the Pattie was a bit dry but I was still satisfied. I thought the chicken and the sausages were decent, nothing special. What I did not like was the ribs, it was extremely dry; it seems like they cooked it a bit long. As you may have seen with your own family, we just could never decide on anything. When we finally got our orders straight, we went to the counter and was greeted by a smiling cashier that was patiently waiting for our orders. After we ordered, we thanked the cashier and went to sit down at a table. The cashier would usually put our orders on the counter and have us pick them up. However, the cashier decided to deliver the food to our table to help us. It was really nice of him. The food was pretty good. The brisket was nice and juicy. The smoked Gouda Mac was really good. It had a great cheese-y flavor and was pretty good, especially with the taste difference. The pulled pork and beans were more like regular baked beans where I couldn't taste the pulled pork in it. The Texas toast was good and flakey. It was not too oily which was great. I didn't feel bad after eating that meal where I would normally when I'm eating tons of fatty meats and oily food. The ribs were pretty good as well but not as fall off the bone as I would have liked. The corn pudding was a little too sweet for my taste. The loaded potato salad was pretty good and worked more as a palette cleanser than a source of sour and rich from the mayo and the potato. The fried catfish were good and well fried but I believe that it could be crispier. For the food, I would have to take a half star off as it had not yet reached what it could be. I would have to take the other half star off of the restaurant from the placement of the furniture and the style of the restaurant. The walkway to see the menu and the cashier line was way too small, and we had to squish ourselves down whenever we were letting people through. It made the restaurant feel really cramp, more than it does just looking at the space. The tables themselves were really tiny and could barely fit all of my family's food (4 total) on the table. Overall, this place is a pretty good place to try out if you're feeling the need for barbecue. The barbecue here is smokey and the service here is great! read more
