    Tempura
    Ana T.

This place is as good as Carlos Tendon and way cheaper. Dont be fooled that this is in a food court. Their tempura is soooo crispy and delicious. One of my favorite tempura spot and parking is easy too :) the service is fast too i ordered via the self order kiosk and got my food within 5 minutes

    Tempura combo with hot soba.

A casual Japanese tempura and soba kiosk inside the market. You quickly order on the tablet and they will call your number when ready. Tables available and restrooms as well. I recommend the tempura and soba combo! You can have it cold or hot soba.

Original Tendon was excellent. Well prepared. The sauce is especially notable. I was surprised that when I asked for a cup of water and was told: not available. I asked if there was freer water anywhere in the food court and and again told. No. So I had to go to the grocery becersge section and choose a Ochoa tea. What a senselessly stupid policy. Otherwise recommend

They specialize in tempura. Frshly served with hot ponzu dipping sauce. Fast and clean.

I think a lot of people are hating because they expect fine dining. That's not what this place is all about. Hannosuke has great fresh tempura dishes at half the price of anything you'll find on Sawtelle or Little Tokyo. There is also rarely a line up, or waiting for hours just to get a seat. Their shrimp tempura is a must, I usually get the bowl or combo depending on my mood. Also make sure to get the tempura poached egg, it's the star of the tempura show here. I'll definitely be back if I'm grocery shopping in Mitsuwa, in the future!

Although my last review was three years ago (in 2021), I've come back here a couple of times. And the last time was about a year ago. Notable points: They still have the plexiglass between you and and the staff. They don't accept cash. They now have a self-service POS terminal (see picture). So if you have a problem pressing your finger where everyone has pressed, that may be an issue. But it's good to know that they protect their staff. (And probably save on labor.) They still don't have free drinking water. Maybe that will never come back. So just need to buy or bring your own drinking water. A bottle of a 12-ounce water at Trade Joe's is only 17 cents so buy a couple when you do your groceries For my recent visit, I ordered the Vegetable Tempura for the first time bec I remembered after all the years that I was having Shrimp Tempura that I am allergic to Shrimp. I think the Vegetable Tempura came with Rice. But I'm sure it came with that Seaweed. And also Pepper. I also ordered a side of White Fish. That was good. The Vegetable Tempura was not so good. Maybe because it is vegetable. I wish I was not allergic to Shrimp. I also ordered Cold Soba. That was a lot of food. Next time I'm going to ask for a to-go container and bring home my leftover rice and vegetable tempura.

1.5 in unagi nuggets, made the shrimp look huge lol

Been going here for years. Ordered one unagi tempura combo and couldn't believe the smallest pieces of unagi I've ever seen. They were tiny nuggets! The menu pic is deceptive, they want $17 ($3 more than the original) for less vegetables and 2 tiny 1.5" unagi nuggets that don't even touch the edge of the bowl. Being half Japanese, this is a shame. I've never seen unagi donburi pieces this small before. You guys should just take it off the menu.

Our go to spot for tempura plate sets! Spicy chicken tempura is always nice and consistent when you are craving fried stuff and the rice and egg on top is always a beautiful addition to complete the meal. Always a clean plate for us when we do have lunch or dinner here. Then off to the bookstore and market we go.

There's not a lot of service to rate, but my review is strictly based on my experience with a delicious bowl of tempura. The 5 star rating is base on both quantity and quality. For about $15, you get a bowl of perfectly fried spicy chicken tender, (2) tempura shrimp, and tempura broccoli, seaweed, and pumpkin and lastly a tempura gooey egg too. They top everything off with their tempura sauce. I always get their chili powder because I like the heat. Why do I like this bowl of rice so much? Well, if you've ever taken bite of heaven and just know this food is done exceptionally well. Then is the the bowl of leave me alone to my moment kind of experience. This is one of my top restaurants to try in L.A. Then there's Mitsuwa where you can go get a nice drink, of dessert if you choose to.

After haircuts, I usually pop in to the Mitsuwa next door and have lunch. Hannosuke is one of the places we like for something quick and filling. However, small warning that while this spot is typically very good, there are days where the tempura can be just a tad bit too greasy. I wouldn't completely discount it though! The Original Tendon Set is still something I like to take my chances with because when it's still good. The reason for 4 stars only is because it's just not a hit 100% of the time. Food comes out fairly quickly but just make sure to listen carefully for your number to be called or you'll miss your meal!

Soba and Mini Tendon Set and Takoyaki
    Queenie M.

The store was clean and the staff were friendly, answered questions on the menu I had. I ordered the mini tendon + mini soba set & takoyaki! Probably wouldn't order the takoyaki next time but the mini tendon + mini soba set was good! I would come back again to try other items on the menu during lunchtime!

This place impressed me for being in a food court! This kids set was only $8 and it came with two shrimp, pumpkin, seaweed, egg, and rice! Love the runny egg and the batter on all the items was seasoned very well. Can't beat such a well priced meal in LA! Service was quick and food is fresh to order. Cozy cafeteria style seating too.

I enjoyed the easy ordering, delicious tempura, egg, shishito peppers. Had some nice togarishi seasonings as well. Serve yourself, and there's the food hall ambiance. Tempura was crispy, fresh, heavenly. I'll definitely be back soon!

The food here, particularly the tempura, is overall quite good. However, the customer service can sometimes be slow and not super polite.

The Santa Monica one is more grab and go as it's their smaller flagship location. This business has been carried by the owner Keiko who has brought a slice of Japan outside of the designated communities of West LA's Sawtelle and DTLA's Japan Town! Here (at either location) you will find unique delicious flavors of omusubi but also called onigiri rice balls! That you won't find anywhere else! Rice balls are actually shaped into triangles and stuffed or mixed with simple ingredients like a salted plum called ume (it tastes salty, and tangy with a touch of sweetness) To more engaging offerings like the lucky cat with japanese pickles with fresh wasabi, ginger, and bonito(dried fish that is sliced paper thin) These finger foods can be enjoyed as a snack or grab a few to make a meal. The Culver City Location has a decor that immerses you in Japan. They have a small market section with alcohol such as saki, handmade dishware from Japan, cute claw machines for kids, and expanded meal offerings! Besides Keiko being absolutely amazing, the food is as well! From curry stuffed to fresh shisho leaves and pickled wasabi!!! There's lots to choose from and the best part.,,.they have always had an expansive vegan menu! Yes they are very Vegan Friendly! I love the Eggplant Chili Miso and Wasabi Tsukudani. I highly suggest checking out the Culver City location so you can sit down and enjoy a drink and the ambiance and expanded offerings. After going to this place for nearly 16 years there are rare days where things like the rice may be off due to a mistake, but I've only experienced that a total of 2 times in 16 years so it's pretty rare!

The order took awhile (about 30 mins) but there is an online tracker and it's quite accurate. Both omusubis were made fresh. The rice was kinda falling apart. It could definitely use more protein. The curry one is sooooo good but needs a little more salt. The beef was good too, it reminded me of Yoshinoya. It was about $6 for one. They have a combo plate but I didn't need the sides.

Ever since the original owner Kenzo Yamada sold the marketplace to the Kohno family (two family members are retail consultants for Japanese department stores) and partner Alex Soto in 2021, Yama Sushi has been expanding beyond the flagship location in San Gabriel. There are currently 3 locations (San Gabriel, West LA, and Koreatown) as of September 2026 with a new 4th location in Sherman Oaks coming soon. [Parking]: Yama shares the same small and free parking lot with Chipotle and the lot is typically packed during busy hours, but there's a high turnover rate so cars are constantly driving in and out of the lot. Even if the lot is packed, there's still free street parking. [Atmosphere]: The marketplace is constantly busy with limited indoor and outdoor seating. [Ordering sashimi]: Visitors take a number first. Once your number is called, then visitors can select fishes that they want and a staff member will cut the fishes into sashimi. [Hot deli]: This location actually offers a hot deli unlike the flagship location in San Gabriel. Some of the items include chicken curry, curry pan, chicken katsu, unagi don, char siu bao, etc. Please note that many of these hot deli items were sold out by the time I got here at 6 PM. [Signature items]: Yama is best known for its signature California Rolls and the shop is constantly making these rolls due to high turnover rates so you know they are always fresh. Another one of my favorite items is the Poke Bowls, but they are always sold out past lunchtime. *** Bara Chirashi (jewels of the sea - tuna, salmon, yellowtail, ika, tamago, avocado, ikura, and seasoned rice - $14.95): This is one of their new items and honestly it is hard to find a chirashi bowl that costs less than $15 in 2026 and tastes this fresh nowadays. A-tier item. Unagi don (aka eel bowl - $9.95): This is one of the most inexpensive eel bowls in Los Angeles and Orange County. It is unbelievable how they can sell an eel bowl for less than $10 in 2026 when places like Marugame Udon sell their grilled eel bento for $20+. S-tier item. *** Come here for lunch for the best experience with the full selection. Expect fresh quality fish and incredible value at Yama. It would be nice if Yama decided to open another location in the South Bay with Torrance being the home to one of the largest Japanese populations outside of Japan. P.S. - Extra $0.20 for a takeout bag.
