The shiitake mushroom was excellent. The shiso sauce was too thick and salty. They forgot the cabbage side. I had the yuzu soda: was housemade and very good. The server was not interested in serving anyone and was on her phone the entire time. She didn't seem to be wanting to work there. They had spotify but only the free version. This place is a diamond and James is AMAZING. Everything he recommended was incredible. My husband and I went here on date night on a Tuesday. It definitely could've been busier but honestly, it really didn't matter because the food and service were fantastic. The bar area where you eat has elegant wooden chairs, and there are only a few tables where you can actually sit down at a traditional western style table and eat. Contemporary Japanese inside, modern and not too minimal. One table, tons of bar seating, mostly around a long u-shaped bar that's surprisingly comfortable when it starts to fill up. Karaage is massive pieces, seems like they de-bone and de-skin chicken thighs but don't really cut them further-- would be nice if they did cut them a little smaller, because they were delicious otherwise. Sunomono is on-point. Soba menu seems to have evolved over time, the beef ribeye seems to be a constant one tho-- thin cold soba, thin sliced beef, with a soft-boiled egg. Execution is right, but was hoping to see the scallop soba, which apparently has rotated off the menu. 3.5 stars, but will round up. We made another visit to SOBAR tonight, I was reminded why it's a favorite. This time I had the soba with the rib eye, while my son had the egg drop soba. It's obviously costs a bit more for soba here in the States than it is in Japan (then again, hamburgers are expensive there) but as my son remarked, it's worth it to have a meal this good and authentic. The homemade noodles are as good as any I've had in Japan, but the broth is amazing. My son and I both consumed it all, it's that good. It compliments the noodles perfectly. We shouldn't forget we got an order of the kara age (Japanese fried chicken), it's one of the best we've ever had. This time I had a full glass of sake, it was amazingly smooth. We then topped it off with a small shot of plum wine, so much better than any other plum wine I've had. Their maitre'd James is the perfect host. He draws from his experience living in Japan to make spot-on recommendations and provide friendly conversation. He's the perfect host This isn't cheap eats. It really felt like you were in a cozy little family restaurant in Japan, with a counter on the side with seating, a few small tables, and a middle u-shaped bar area. We learned about the place from Groupon, and I really appreciate that they are offering excellent quality food with a discount - much appreciated in these times! This is kind of a small bites place, where you get a couple of smaller portions of meat and other sides as well as a main portion of stuff like cold or warm soba noodles. Since it was my bday, we did it up a little big and ordered many things... We tried the signature sobar lunch, which came with several courses (I got the traditional tsuyu with brisket, the cabbage, seared sashimi and grilled duck - delishhhh, and a handroll, along with a spiked lemonade drink, which was a delight). The vibe and ambiance were cool and the service was helpful and warm to us. Overall, the food was fresh and the flavors were mostly very good (particularly the duck and sashimi). I think maybe I'm not the biggest fan of cold noodle dishes, and the house broth was good, but didn't quite knock my socks off. I also felt like it was on the lighter side portion-wise, so I feel like I did leave the place still a little hungry. Given the average price on the menu, that part was a little disappointing. I think I went on an off day. Have been wanting to check this place out for a bit. I go to japan quite often and soba has become one of my favorite things to eat, so when this place came onto the scene I planned to check it out, and finally did a few weeks ago. Cool little spot, a little understaffed due to some turnover. Thats forgivable. The server did their best to accommodate since they were the only one running front of house that day. Lets get to the food though. I kept reading on the menu that these things have savory flavor, so i got one of the stars of the show the ribeye niku soba, and i've gotta say this was probably the most bland thing ive eaten in a long time. The broth had no flavor, the ribeye was essentially a bland korean bulgogi, but oddly very dry and hard to chew. I had to ask for some shicimi and salt to try to get any semblance of flavor out of the the dish, but honestly the worst part of it is that the broth itself tasted like mildew, and trust me i know the flavors im looking for and i can tell a difference between kombu and other flavors. We are talking about one of my all time favorite things to eat, i've had them all, and this just seemed like the filtration system they have for the water used may be broken, have an overdue filter replacement, or someone made a boo boo and used the wrong faucet. Even just a subtle flavor would have been enough here. I will say the soba they make is great with a really nice chew, but everything else in the niku soba was not. A bit disappointing of a visit as I had high hopes. I dont mind the prices as long as the taste is good, but I think the owners need to do some recon on how the cooks are preparing and sending out these dishes. I'm always willing to try a place a second time, so im hoping they make some changes here because its a shame that the soba is so good, but the rest of the things in one of their signature dishes was really bad. Stopped by for cold soba on a hot day and this just hit the spot. We were on a semi-rush and staff was understanding and we got our food, ate, and out the door in less than 45 minutes. We got the special lunch combo for $17. We ordered the Ribeye Niku Soba with Karaage and my friend got the Scallop Shiso Maze Soba with Tendon tempura bowl. Refreshing and perfect for the weather. The ribeye soba was meaty and flavorful. The tempura bowl and Karaage were were perfect compliments to the soba, filling and provides a nice contrast to taste and consistency. Might be my new favorite soba place. I drive by here every day to and from work and have been wanting to try it. We finally went and it did not disappoint. The buckwheat soba noodles are made fresh everyday and you can tell the difference. I had the scallop shiso chilled soba and if you love shiso this is the dish for you. I'm actually don't loooooove shiso (though I still enjoy it) and even for me this dish was so incredible. The micro shiso in the broth was just so much flavor but in the best way possible We also had some apps including the Sunomono and agadashi tofu. At Sobar, you're here for a calming experience at the U-shaped wooden live edge bar. As you listen to relaxing jazzy grooves, the team creates handcrafted soba noodles. Zaru Soba: The chilled soba is on a round bamboo sieve. The thin noodles have a subtle almost nutty flavor. They are firm and a little slick. The tsuyu is soy sauce plus dashi with a plate of scallions and a bump of wasabi. You pick up some of the soba and dip it in the tsuyu. The flavors are very precise, distinct, and understated. The friendly staff is happy to share their culture. They shared some new age sea salts for a non-traditional flavor boost. The salt flakes add jolts of yuzu and matcha. When the soba is finished, they'll bring a teapot. Pour the starchy white soba cooking water into the tsuyu so it becomes drinkable. The warm and savory soup is a comforting treat to end the meal. Chicken Karaage: The chicken is outstanding - plump and super juicy - as if they would burst. The big golden dark meat pieces are battered and fried to perfection. Although you do pay some West side mark ups for Asian food, the soba was still enjoyable. Their most popular dish, the Ribeye Niku Soba, skimped pretty hard on the ribeye but the scallop which was also the same price had just as much if not more protein than the ribeye. Relatively new spot (I think they have been open about a year or less as of early 2025) that specializes in soba noodles. With a pretty streamlined menu and a minimalist wooden decor inside a pretty small spot, this place feels like a cozy, sleek spot to grab some delicious Japanese food. Before coming here, my mind was already made up. I had to order the Kamo Negi Soba. I really wanted to savor the noodles and asked for the yuzu and matcha salt. I took small bites of the chewy, delicious noodles using the different salts and really trying to showcase the flavor before dipping the noodles in the broth. Such a simple, wonderful dish of beautifully crafted noodles. Minimalist like the surroundings at the bar. In addition to having the delicious noodles, we wanted to try a couple of the sides as well. I heard about this place through the LA Times. It's on the corner of Washington and Centinela. I found street parking 2 blocks away; the closest street has residential permit parking only, and there is metered parking on Washington. There was no signage on the restaurant before opening until they pull down a cloth screen that has the Sobar name. Next door is a vegan Japanese restaurant. I came for lunch. They take reservations by phone, but I was not asked if I had one. There was a single person in front doing everything. She was quite strict about where to sit. There is the main U-shaped bar in the middle, with another counter facing the wall and maybe 2 tables in front. Sobar specializes in ju-wari soba, made only from buckwheat flour and water. For weekday lunch, they offer their $35 Signature Sobar Lunch with Zaru soba (several soba and dipping sauce options) and 4 small dishes, in my case cabbage, salmon sashimi, grilled duck, shrimp tempura handroll. They also had a $17 Special Lunch combo (choice of soba and side + cabbage), or several a la carte soba options. I went with the Signature lunch. It sounded like a lot of food but it was not. The handroll was pretty traditional, but the salmon and duck were rather unique and delish. The cold soba was fine, I chose the traditional tsuyu dipping sauce with scallion and wasabe. I asked for yuzu salt (per the LA Times). I'm a soba novice, so I dipped the soba first in the salt and sauce bowl, then eventually just dumped the soba in the bowl and sipped up the leftover sauce like tea at the end. Perhaps Neanderthalic, but no one noticed or chastised me. The server, perhaps used to working alone, was an efficient whirling dervish, my meal was complete in less than an hour. I don't mind paying for quality food that makes it worth its value. With soba, you can easily make it at home and to pay an exorbitant price for soba seems a tad unreasonable. The appetizers were also very average; they look nice, but the taste is nothing spectacular. I absolutely loved my experience at Sobar! The moment we walked in, we were greeted with a cozy, relaxed atmosphere and the warm aroma of freshly made broth. The staff was friendly, attentve and seemed genuinely happy to be there, which made the whole dining experience even better. The soba is made in-house, daily with 100% organic buckweat which makes these noodles gluten free, healthier and delicious. Our lunch special allowed us to choose from a variety of their menu options. I chose the assorted tempura with rice and everything was spot-on! Crispy, light tempura which was perfectly sweet and salty not needing any sauce and scrumptious with the seasoned rice. We also ordered the Kakiage Soba which is also a warm soup of savory broth, topped with crispy shrimp, scallop and mixed vegetable fritters and a poached egg. Additionaly we ordered a small bowl of their Ribeye Niku Soba which was chilled with savory broth and poached egg. Every bite was a work of art; balanced flavors, nurturing, comforting and delicious! The presentation was simple but elegant, and even though the dishes were traditional, they had a modern touch that made them feel special. Wooden spoons and chopsticks elevate each bite and slurp. I have heard great things about Sobar and we headed over right when the restaurant opened at 5:30pm. There are two tables and lots of bar seating. We picked our seats and got otsukemono to start with a northern light sake. The pickeled vegetables were small but high quality with excellent crunch. The sake had a great apple taste which was delicious. I got zaru soba with shiso dipping sauce. My husband got the warm soba, the kamo negi which had slices of duck in the broth. The chilled noodles were chewy and were a lovely vessel for the dipping sauces. The shiso dipping sauce was bright green with all the shiso leaf added in with a hint of vinegar and garlic. This is a little challenging to eat so I suggest going slow as it can be a bit messy. The service was really fast and attentive. Overall I highly recommend this soba bar. read more

Blink and you might miss it but what a great find. While there is no designated parking lot, since it is located deep in Culver City, you can usually find street parking. With so many delicious options on the menu, it was a tough call but in the end we opted to share 3 dishes. Cucumber Sunomono ($7), Appetizer sampler, Maze Soba ($21). Everything was super flavorful, light, and refreshing. Just what you would expect from a Soba restaurant. We started with the crunchy cucumbers which was savoy with a touch of sweet, which flowed nicely into the slightly heavier and saltier sampler with the pork belly and duck. Very cute little resturant. Street parking only, which can be tricky when busy. I ordered the zaru chilled soba with two different dripping sauces. I liked that there was an option to try to different dipping sauces for an affordable add on rather than having to choose one. I really enjoyed the shiso dipping sauce and next time would only order that one. There are some hot soba dishes available for those more into warmer noodles. I have not found many soba specialty restaurants around. This was a delicious meal, the service was speedy, the atmosphere intimate and inviting. We really wanted to like Sobar... we're really jazzed to see an authentic soba noodle shop! But it was clear that they don't have their act together, and messed up in several critical ways. We had already been seated for quite some time we were told that they were out of nearly all dishes- all rice, as well as kariage, which affects almost every combo you would want, and most of the menu. A better business would have offered some free appetizers or tea to compensate for the inconvenience, but they did not. Completely ridiculous. Went here for dinner with friends the other night for the first time. It was my first time at a udon shop so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors. The shop is quiet and clean, and service is very friendly and fast. * We ordered from their specials menu which featured an appetizer plate of a variety of small bites including salmon and beef and it was soooo delicious. This was probably my favorite part of the whole meal. The pickled cabbage was perfectly crunchy and tangy, and each bite of the appetizers were filled with flavor. Stupid me didn't take a picture of the specials menu because I was too hungry but please refer to my included photo! I highly recommend it. * Agedashi nasu - Eggplant in a light dashi broth. It wasn't super memorable to me, I thought the flavor was quite plain to be completely honest. I would recommend skipping this. * Mongo Ika squid tempura - The squid itself was really good! It was fresh and tender. But the batter was really plain also unfortunately. Its served with some salt and a lemon wedge but I thought some spices were missing and wasn't super impressed. I've had better. * Kami Negi Soba - The soba was good! The flavor of the broth was actually really delicious. It had a very soy, umami flavor that was perfectly salted without being overly salty. The grilled duck was a good addition too, although I felt like it was slightly chewy. The soba was served cold and intended to dip. However, the service was very slow and erratic considering it was only 5:45 and we were one of two parties in the restaurant. Only one person at front of the house and they did not have a handle on the menu, who to take care of and in which order to do so, or when to check in. They accidentally poured hot tea on our table, which was a bummer. Luckily, no one was burned. I hope they are able to hire more staff or train existing staff better. Classy little eatery hidden near the corner of Washington and Centinela. Simple but beautiful interior gives a modern ambiance. We ordered the $65 Signature set with a number of appetizers and a choice of one soba. We added another soba dish and shared everything between the two of us. It was a good meal. We loved the duck breast (very tender, almost like a sashimi, but can be a bit more savory in my opinion), the salmon sashimi, and the tempuras. Between the Maze and Zaru soba, we like the Zaru better. The shiso sauce was very tasty. It was a Saturday night so very busy here. Service was fine - all staff working hard there, but the wait for our food was just a bit too long. Overall a nice dining experience. The quality of food was excellent. Our bill came to about $60 pp with taxes and tips included. I feel the dinner worth it. read more

Holy cow this place was good! Came in for the lunch special which is a screaming deal. I had the lemonade, chicken Katsu app and the ribeye soba. The lemonade is house made and sparkling but so bright and delicious. The chicken Katsu was crispy and moist -- though I wish I had an option for a sort of dipping sauce. The ribeye soba was a great portion size and came with a beautifully poached egg. The service was quite nice and the owner was greeting people throughout our time there. Regarding the ambiance, it is a more group-style setting so not super intimate if you wanted a table to yourself. There was a whole bunch of us seated around a bar but they will, of course, seat you with your party. read more
