This family owned business is clean, easy parking, and the friendliest polite service you can ask for. The fish and taste melt in your mouth. After coming here for over 20 years I will still drive 45 mins to dine here and I love the food and customer service. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. Sushi quality was very high, really fresh and well-made but the owners are greedy and deceptive. We ordered "chef's choice" which is, as usual, a fixed amount of food, but then they kept bringing more without notifying us that we had exceeded the chef's choice amount. I don't believe it's up to the (first time) customer to keep track of how many courses they are serving and I expect the servers to tell us we were now in pay-as-you-go territory, esp when we were presented a bill ~2x what we had been "quoted" for the chef's choice. No remorse, understanding of the situation, or apologies from the owners when we expressed our frustration. Maybe this is why we were the ONLY customers in there on a Thursday night? read more

Hands down the best sushi in LA. 3 generations of my family have been going here for over 15 years. One of my sisters' lives in Baltimore and every year when she visits during Christmas, she goes straight from the airport to Hiko and the rest of us meet her there. We plan our entire 2 weeks together around when we can go to Hiko while she's here. We celebrate everyone's birthday here. My mom just turned 70 and all she wanted, like every year prior, was to eat at Hiko. I am shocked this place has anything less than 5 stars, but people seem to be surprised that it costs more than any average frilly sushi joint which is no reason to dock a star IMO. Soko is probably the closest I've had in terms of quality, but the experience there is more frilly and not authentic the way Hiko is. You definitely get what you pay for and more. Every piece of fish is crafted and served to perfection, the rice is warm and the seasoning is just right. It just melts in your mouth. The uni is the best I have ever had, I am drooling just thinking about it. When I was in Japan, my fiancé and I compared every sushi place we went to from the chains to the Michelin starred and Hiko beat all of them by a long shot. I love how small and cozy it is. I love that there are no phones allowed. I love that there are only a handful of people making the entire place go, and your entire meal is brought out piece by piece in the correct order for the ultimate eating experience. I love that I don't have to shout to have a conversation. It feels like a comfortable nook in your home and not a busy, overstuffed and loud restaurant like almost every other place in LA. The owners (husband & wife, chef and FOH) are the nicest and sweetest people on the planet, they know all of their regulars (there's always a bunch guaranteed to be there!) If you prefer an authentic menu with no Americanized rolls with tons of fillers and covered in spicy mayo and truly enjoy the beauty of melt in your mouth sushi, freshly hand picked each morning at the market and served to perfection, this is absolutely the place for you. The sushi was. Absolutely. Delicious. Even on a random Monday night, it was incredibly fresh and had so much flavor. I especially loved the uni and the salmon. The only thing is that it is very traditional Japanese sushi so it's just fish and rice and the portions are very small. There's a four order per person minimum. There's a parking lot in the plaza. It's a little small but there are a few spots reserved just for the restaurant. You also have to call and make a reservation ahead of time. Who knew there's a little Japanese sushi gem in the middle of a quiet plaza near the 405 freeway exit? We've been living here for the past 6 years and never once even noticed the existence of Hiko Sushi especially with the glaring Galby King sign next door. There's a few rules in this restaurant - min of 4 sushi per person, reservations only (preferably I think), no talking on the phone, etc etc. They don't serve your usual dragon roll, rainbow roll, crunchy roll, California roll, etc if that's what you are looking for. All they serve are nigiri rolls, two per order, and a few handrolls. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the sushi here. The fresh water eel sushi was amazingly grilled, scallops a nice balance of a tinge of sweet and sour and so so soft, sweet shrimp so so good, uni was so fresh and creamy and baby tuna with the ponzu was perfectly seasoned. Our bill ended up to be close to $200 for two adults for about 13-14 sushi. The service was really nice too. Will definitely visit again for a nice quiet no fuss dinner. read more

Warning: NOT for those who crave "clown rolls" like those drenched with sriracha, tons of mayonnaise, 'eel sauce', Tempura flakes. It is NOT party central where you whoop & holler and down extra cheap Sakè & small bivalve in a small shot glass better known as an oyster shooter while listening to time warp music of Nine Inch Nails.   Also, no cooked food such as Tempura, Teriyaki, nor Sashimi & cut rolls. Hiko- Sushi is very old school Èdomaè (eh doh mah eh) Sushi that serves Nigiri (nee ghee ree) & Tèmaki/small hand rolls.  In fact, they will not honor special orders such as putting together Uni (oo nee) & Ikura to make a Tèmaki/handroll even though they have both those ingredients. However, they insist on presenting them separately in a Nigiri style called Gunkan since they are shaped like boats with Nori/seaweed paper around the edge of the Nigiri to keep the Nèta (neh tah)/Sushi toppings from sliding off.  Just like at Kappo- Irifunè in Torrance, it is good to see a Japanese female Sushi chef displaying her knife skills in a predominantly male profession. Perhaps a more female perspective may create a new aesthetic approach to Sushi.  Rice here tends toward barely warm which is fine to keep the Nori from getting stale quickly since warm rice has steam which will cause the Nori to become chewy, leathery & elastic in a bad way.   There is a 4 order minimum from the à la carte menu or 5 order minimum for Omakasè (oh mah kah seh) at a table. The Sushi bar is for Omakasè  only. Tèmaki (teh mah kee): 1) Toro is very soft, unctuous, rich Maguro/bluefin tuna probably scrapped from near the bone & under the skin in a cigar shaped Nori wrapped Tèmaki. 2) Ankimo/Angler fish liver Torchon slice that is steamed. Like a Foie Gras from the sea, it has a light liver flavour, soft plushness that is accented by Sumiso which is Japanese rice vinegar, Miso paste agrodolce sauce.    3) Lobster is warm glazed with a soupçon  of mayonnaise for a subtle egginess, touch of gastrique to enliven the ocean sweet, rougher textured lobster. Chopped button mushroom added an earthy forest funghi scent to contrast against this gift from the sea.  4)  Unagi (oo nah ghee)/fresh water eel is baked with a touch of sweet eel sauce paired with 2 sticks of crunchy Japanese cucumber. Sansho no Kona added a countervailing peppery bitterness to the sweet oiliness of the eel. 1-4a) Urakasumi Sakè (sah keh): Strong taste of ripe Japanese Nashi/pear. Smooth, sweet and the light, refreshing bitterness & touch of acidity creeps in to refresh the palate. Rather bold for delicate white meat fish such as halibut, Japanese sea bream, Botan Èbi/sweet shrimp, but Urakasumi paired well with what I had ordered since they were sweet and/or fatty.  At the next opportunity I'd like to sample the Omakasè  to ascertain the mettle of what Hiko- Sushi has to offer. I've been ordering from here consistently and can't wait for the day I can experience their omakase in person. Hidden sushi spot I found out about from a friend. Kind of a hole in the wall spot. Someone came out and showed us the menu to confirm we were okay with not eating at a place with a bunch of fancy rolls with eel sauce and spicy mayo , etc. They also seem to require a minimum order per person, which seems a bit odd to me as well. This place serves simple sashimi and sushi only with a few Japanese small bites. It reminds me a little bit of Sugarfish, but with a more family owned feel. Reserved for Omakase course , 6 items (6 pieces ) of sushi for $65.50 per person. Most sushi is fresh and very delicious. If you want more sushi you can ask chef to continue and pay extra . Downside is that it's not the fancy omakase you hope for and chef is not very communicative; they do not ask you your preferences instead just feed you what they have. A bit disappointing even though the sushi is delicious. Also 6 pieces of sushi is not enough for almost everybody. That means if you want to fill up your stomach expect to pay $100 plus. I can say this place is a good place to order sushi (a la carte) but not the kind of place you expect to get a great course. read more

This was a wonderful belated birthday gift to me from a good friend of mine. First of all, come here with no, and I mean NO, too much high expectations. Why ? Because people do that all the time, me especially, then you just have this unimaginable expectations of the food taste. Not saying that this place will disappoint, but you get the idea. That being said .. I still need to share how awesome my experience was, you can come and discuss how good it was after you have tried here too ;) First Rule - NO TEXTING, NO TALKING ON THE PHONE! The NO PHONE rule is posted everywhere in the restaurant. They will send you the bill and tell you to be on your way if they see you messing around. When you come to eat, you freaking sit down, enjoy your food and no getting distracted by any sort of outside source. I love this rule. Too many people go out to 'hang out', but then always end up only burying their face in their phones. Silence throughout the whole meal. That is just annoying. Second Rule - Get the Omakase; and when you do, FINISH the food. He doesn't give you a mountain of rice or food, so don't be wasteful. Third Rule - This is more of a task for any of you that's up for a challenge. Sit at the sushi bar and just try, try to make the chef laugh or smile. He hears compliments, but just keeping a straight face the entire time. Now on to the food (As you can tell, this will be a longer review) - Baby Tuna Sashimi - in a sesame sauce. The sauce he drowned the salmon in, was just so addictive! It would go really great with just rice. Fresh, but you can't taste it too well since it's drowned in sauce. No complaints though, I still love this dish. Great to start with. Albacore (I think it was) with just a little bit of lemon and salt and Toro was the second dish. It was such a pleasant refreshing surprise when I tasted the lemon and salt. So simple but does wonders. Toro was even more awesome - it was so fresh and thick-cut. Then comes the Crab hand-roll. This was done very well too, but maybe it just didn't stand out too much as opposed to everything else I had that night. Now.. this is my absolutely favorite thing all night, Escolar. I have heard very bad things about escolar. If not purchased at the right place or prepared right, you can get grossly-orange-explosive-diarrhea. In this case, I did not. He put a sweet, thinner than paper, slice of leaf on each of the sushi. It was total MOUTH-GASM! Whatever it is you are saying while I was eating this, I did not hear you. Last but not least, Salmon, one with just simple sesame seeds on it. The other with that very thinly-cut sweet leaf. Loved both, though it seemed a little bit more fishy than I would like. All the sashimi were thick-cuts, fresh and very little sushi rice underneath. If you have a big appetite, you can keep on ordering the Omakase and he will keep making, but whenever you are ready, you can call it quits, there's no limit (as far as I know). I was bad, I just wanted to document on what I ate and how good it was, so I did sneak in some pictures of the food. They didn't hand me the bill, luckily. On a normal weekend and Friday night, they do get busy, so make sure you come on a weeknight or come early. read more

This is Michelin Star worthy sushi. Eat here while you can still get a reservation. It'll definitely blow up soon. Small, family owned restaurant with deliciously fresh fish. Staff was incredibly friendly. No phones allowed - well phones are welcome but you can't play anything out loud or the sushi chef will yell at you. Their omakase has a great selection of high quality fresh fishes. The restaurant operates with the Omakase-style option at the bar. Essentially, this means that the chef picks what you eat at the bar and you can't choose off a menu. The bar required a minimum of five orders. The tables contain your usual standard menu choices and requires four orders minimum. The staff is strict about cellphone usage. You can text or go online or yelp, but no phone conversations in the restaurant were allowed. Started the night off with baby tuna sashimi, red snapper, halibut, and the monk fish liver. Baby tuna sashimi had good sesame and lime aroma. It was practically "breaded" with sesame seeds. Great flavor! I must say I have fallen in love with ponzu sauce. This was my favorite item on the menu. The red snapper came with lime and pepper sauce. It had a spicy flavor to it almost like wasabi. The sushi was slightly warmed up and really good. The halibut had ponzu sauce and yuzu peppers added hot flavors to the dish. The Monkfish liver roll had miso sauce inside, which was blended into the meat of the fish. There was a little too much sauce for my enjoyment, but it was still good! Finished my first four orders and decided to try the toro and salmon skin roll! Toro roll was actually really good (also most expensive item on the menu!). The roll came with huge pieces of toro. The salmon skin takes time too cook, but the skin was nice and crispy when it came out. I wasn't disappointed. read more

The chef is meticulous in selection and preparation so you keep finding subtleties in the offerings that delight you. It is an immersive experience, perfectly sequenced and paced. WOW. If you enjoy good sushi, you have to try this place. The prices are good ($6-8 for a 2 piece order of nigiri) for some of the best fish I've ever had. It reminded me of sugarfish with its simplicity & prices, although much better quality fish and they have beer & sake (both hot & a nice selection of cold ones) to drink. If you're looking for fancy rolls or an experiential atmosphere, this isn't the place. Try something like Sushi Bar in Encino for a westernized, over the top omakase experience with ingredients like bone marrow. Hiko is a quiet, hole in the wall spot with only a few seats and a simple menu. But as someone who has had a lot of good sushi both in the US and Japan, I can confirm the fish here is *chef's kiss* We did the omakase where they keep bringing out plates until you're full. They do ask if you don't like anything on the menu, so if there's something you want to avoid like monkfish liver or whatever, you're welcome to do that with no judgement. You can also order à la carte. While the service is minimal (just bringing out plates & refilling drinks), our waitress was attentive, extremely pleasant, and made us feel welcome. I've heard the chef can be somewhat of a hardass about eating your whole plate, but honestly, get over it. This isn't a place that overfills the pieces with rice, so there's no reason to pick rice off and leave any on your plate. Eat your sushi the way the chef intended you to eat it and you shouldn't have any issues :) I enjoyed every piece of fish - even the rolls wrapped in seaweed which can be really hit or miss for me. All the nigiri was delicious and I could have done a second order of any of them although we chose the snapper for our repeat item at the end since it's not one we have as often & I'm a sucker for the yuzu kosho they put on it. The baby tuna sashimi is also a must. We each had 16-18 pieces of nigiri, a large portion of sashimi, edamame, 3 rolls, and plenty of sake for about $125 a person. Not cheap, but that is also A LOT of food plus a nice buzz so the pricing is spot on in my opinion. In contrast, Sushi Bar's omakase is $125 a person for 17 pieces of nigiri that might be more inventive/experimental but uses fish that, while decent, doesn't even come close to the quality of Hiko's. 10/10 will be back soon and am looking forward to taking my friends who love good fish here. read more

So just for a touch context: I've had sushi in Japan dozens of times, from the highest formal experiences to the ally stalls with only 4 stools. I love sushi in general, and can even appreciate that there are occasionally cheap, yummy sushi joints perfect for lunch. I've certainly done most of the uber expensive sushi places in LA several times over. There's uber fancy sushi joints in LA that come and go, with Lots of fancy accoutrements... Long lines out the doors... Hip music... And then they're closed six months later. Here's my opinion of Hiko: do not go here for a fun date. Do not go here for a fun/party atmosphere. Do not go here for friendly smiles and self affirmation from waitstaff and talky cool chefs. Do not go here for cutting edge, nouveau, or experimental Sushi presentations. There's only one reason to ever go to hiko: to have the very best, formal/traditional Tokyo style sushi available in all of Los Angeles. I've gone through periods where I eat here over 100 times a year (office nearby)... And sometimes, as is the case now, I only go here every other month or so. But in my thousand or so sushi meals in my life... the hundreds I've had at Hiko has never once disappointed (because I didn't have the wrong expectations of what it was). Hiko is a serious opportunity to have gratitude for life, the fish that were sacrificed, and the restaurant that holds everything sushi in an almost sacred light. read more

Extremely disappointing, poor quality sushi at such a high price point. Fish quality was fine, but not particularly great. Uni was lousy. Selection of fish was totally run of the mill. Same thing you could order at any half decent sushi restaurant in the South Bay. What is the point of omakase if you are just going to serve the standard stuff (hamachi, otoro, tai, hotate, etc) that I can order off the menu? Preparation was poor. Too much ponzu sauce on everything. Rolls were hastily tossed together and were falling apart. Fish not formed on top of rice properly ("nigiri" is from the Japanese verb "nigiru": to clutch or mold. This was not done properly in this case). Sushi rice was warm (?!) Waitress was pleasant. Sushi chef was surly, didn't talk or make eye contact even though we were the only customers. To be "fair", this spot is famous for the surly service, so this was no surprise to us. Cost for the sushi alone, just under $300 for a total of 24 pieces. Outrageous! There are tons of great sushi restaurants in LA, including right up the street in Little Osaka. Time to pass this place by and let it fade away. read more

I found this place by accident, but I'm SO glad I did. I wanted sushi and this showed up as less than a mile away from me, so I decided to try it out. Parking is very limited, the restaurant is small AND they have "rules." Some of the rules include not being able to leave rice, a minimum order per person, not being able to use your phone for calls while dining, etc. It's honestly a bit intimidating, but luckily the server tells you all of this when you walk in, so if you have an issue with any of that, you can leave before sitting down. Also, they don't do sushi rolls. Just nigiri and hand rolls, so if you're looking for a "filling" meal, be prepared to spend a lot of $$$ for it. ALL THAT BEING SAID, when I ate my first $3 piece of salmon nigiri, it was truly heaven. Definitely one of the freshest pieces of fish I've ever had, and I love that they don't serve it with an overwhelming amount of rice, so you actually get to enjoy the fish. I also tried the albacore sushi and yellow tuna hand roll, and both were equally delicious. The food was okay. My main disappointment was the service and overall experience. The moment I walked in the server felt inclined to write down the prices for me, as though I needed to be informed to ensure I could afford it. The server then explained to me that there was a four order minimum for sushi, which wasn't an issue. The issue was that she refused to put in my order unless I put it all in at once; forbidding me from ordering what I like as my meal went on. She claimed the chef needed to know at once all I was ordering and I couldn't eat there otherwise. I obliged even though it seemed like a ridiculous request and it did not appear other diners were forced to do the same. I'll also note that the kitchen brought out all of the orders individually, suggesting the chef wasn't concerned with putting all of my order on one plate. Lastly, when I finished my last bite the server came up with the bill, saying that was all for me, as though she wanted me out.
