While their tempura is pretty good, I'm not sure if I'll be back. The good thing about food courts is that your group can pick different things they'd like to eat, but you can still sit together. That advantage was taken away due to the ridiculously extremely long wait at Hannosuke on a Saturday early afternoon. After waiting a while in line, I placed 2 orders. The first one was ready in about 15 minutes. The second one took a while, so we went back to check a few times. The last time we checked, they mistakenly gave the order to someone else (score for that person!), so they had to remake the entire order. To make up for the ridiculous wait and error, unprompted the cashier said they would give us 2 extra shrimp tempura. When the order came, it was only 1 extra shrimp tempura. When I asked the cashier, she just shrugged. I get it, she's overwhelmed with the line and the orders, and apparently can't count, though not her fault the place is understaffed. By the time we got our full order, the rest of the group was already finished eating their entire meals. Next time, I'd look elsewhere in the food court first. read more

This is the place I mentioned on my review in Kaz (see my review for full context). This is the closest soba place that I know of, besides Kaz, around our area. For $13 you'll get soba with a side of 2 tempura, egg and rice. Dont go sleepin on the taste now coz it's really good! The tempura has that right amount of saltiness and the wasabi adds more spice to it. The tempura and the deep fried egg solidifies your eating experience too. Im not saying it's the best soba place but for the price you pay it's a sweet deal. Really filling too! If you're craving for soba, you should give this place a shot. read more

If you saw my previous review, you would know how rude the server was to my family and I and when we got our order, we found a little piece of metal in one of the dishes. So I've decided that this is one of my favorite restaurants ever! Located in the mitsuwa market as one of the food court options it is chaotic and usually hard to find a seat, but go here ITS WORTH IT. This place specializes in tempura bowls.. They have a variety of combos and the taste is out of this world! I usually get the combo with white fish, shrimp, peppers, seaweed in it and comes with miso soup. Their tempura is fried to absolute perfection, and the sauce just goes so well with it that you would be mind blown. The EGG. Omg the egg. Is probably the best thing that ever existed. It is so amazing to me that it warranted its own paragraph. It is the half cooked half raw type but fried into a tempura masterpiece. The miso soup is not bad, a bit salty but I can live with it. Their soba noodle soup is aight I guess, I can't really taste it after eating the tempura though due to the saltiness of the tempura (it's salty but the deliciousness makes that forgivable-- drink a lot of water!). IMO this is the best vendor at mitsuwa hands down. If this place is a person I'd wanna marry it. read more

Large parking lot Located in Mitsuwa market They always make their food fresh to order so you'll have to wait a few minutes for them to cook it for you. The tempura plate is amazing. It usually has a tempura shrimp, veggies, white fish, white rice, tempura egg. The tempura sauce has a great flavor and tastes wonderful drizzled on the rice and tempura. We've also ordered from here for takeout during covid times. The food quality has stayed high and is just as great as before. Was a huge fan of the location in Torrance first time I have tried this location. Ordered my usual mixed tempura plate and it was terrible I am not sure I'd they used old oil but all the pieces had a funny taste. Also I ordered a soba with my tempura plate they forgot the order and the tempura sat there and got cold while the cashier just kept waiting for the soba to arrive I finally got up and asked them to give me the tempura first the soba took another 10 minutes to make and they were not overly busy no long lines like then Torrance location. This location is in a Japanese food market. My aunt (authentic Japanese) highly raved about this place and said the tempura is great here. I was a little skeptical, but hey, if she likes the place it must be good. OMG it was fantastic. The original combo is amazing, it has fish, vegetables, shrimp etc. It was phenomenal. Winner Winner Tempura Dinner!!! I've been craving tempura for quite some time. I heard about Hannosuke a while back. Today was my lucky day. This wonderful Japanese food establishment is located inside Mitsuwa Market, a Japanese grocery store. About 1/2 the space is food stalls and a shared central eating area. Kinda like what you would see in normal mall. Four places featuring Japanese food, another is a B-Bee Crepe and Boba, a bakery, J.sweets, and lastly a cosmetic store. I ordered the #2 Original Tempura Plate $10.98; white fish, two shrimp, seaweed, pumpkin, broccoli and shishito pepper. Also included was miso soup, rice with a soft boiled egg on top, a bowl of tempura sauce and a small cup of ginger. I also added onto that, the four $1.00 each specials; lotus root, shiitake mushroom, egg plant and sweet potato. Plus a can of Japanese green tea. $18.04 w tax. Plus I dropped a few bucks in the tip jar and. I left $2.00 on the table for the hardworking woman who kept the eating area spotless. Everything was fabulous. I especially liked the light batter that was used. I recently ate a fish and chips lunch at Dinah's, a restaurant known for its fried chicken. The batter coating Dinah's fish was like heavy concrete...it was horrible. I can't wait to take people to Hannosuke as it is a real treasure. In addition, easy parking and the restroom was spotless. I was a loyal customer of the Hannosuke that was in Torrance, so I was so looking forward to the one in Mitsuwa on Centinela. We were the first customers of the day. The rice was awful. It was the first rice of the day and they got the water ratio wrong. It was dry. You could tell just by looking at it. Tasting it verified that they screwed up the rice. At a Japanese restaurant there can be no greater screw up. The tempura was okay, but not anywhere near the quality that I was used to in Torrance. read more

PROS: - absolutely delicious - very fresh tempura! so crispy! - deceivingly large portion; bowl looks small but it's actually A LOT of food - complimentary miso soup is a nice touch - grab extra tendon sauce to dip the tempura in or to just smother your rice in! - original tendon dish comes with a very good variety of tempura (fish, shrimp, pumpkin, broccoli, shishito pepper and even tempura seaweed!) - decent amount of parking in the plaza! CONS: - $12+ after tax so it's not the cheapest - since it's in the Mitsuwa market, it can be hard to find a place to sit I've been to Hannosuke twice so far and I've loved it both times! I love it so much that I can't waste a bite and I force myself to eat allllll the rice. I'm a sucker for tempura so this place has a special place in my heart. We went on Saturday (2/26), just before 6pm. We stood at the counter, waiting to put an order in, just as was a woman with two kids. A heavy-set girl was calling out numbers & putting together orders, continuously in our faces, but never, ever, ever acknowledged us. She seemed to think that she would be better served by putting forth no eye contact or any acknowledgment whatsoever- a very bad sign of the worst customer service & complete lack of perspective from a customer standpoint... that is, until she experiences it. But even then, she seemed so unaware of self that even if she experienced it, she would be very upset/angry about it, but would certainly not see it in herself. Sad. Hannosuke has good food, but not so good that we are willing to pay for bad people. We left and went for some delicious katsu kare at Tokyo Shokudo. The woman at the front was so nice, even though she was busy, and she had a smile behind her mask. If you are familiar with the politeness, if not kindness, of Japanese service, Tokyo Shokudo is where you want to enjoy the experience & food. (The woman & her two kids also left after we all chatted about how Hannosuke staff made it not worth patronizing.) We also went to Gindaco Takoyaki. They seemed to be having something going on, but the young guy at the takoyaki station (Kevin?) smiled & held up a finger asking to please wait- it was obvious he was being kind & gracious about it. He came over soon after & was so nice in taking our order. Service, in my opinion, can make or break a "relationship" for us. Hannosuke is making some pretty poor staffing choices, and although the food industry may be having difficult times, it doesn't mean one has to settle for people who will give the business a bad name. Oh man I'm still pretty glad no one really has found out about this place yet. I mean who doesn't like some deep fried goodness in their lives, what you don't like greasy things? Have no fear, tempura is not greasy and that's the beauty of it. The crust on a tempura offers you something what I would imagine if you were to grab a cloud and use that as batter to deep fry things would be. This place will change your life and all your thoughts on tempura, this is truly perfection at its finest. If you've never had tempura, think of it as this really airy, light, delicate, crisp, batter(no maybe not batter, batter sounds too thick. Whatever's the light less viscous version of batter is) fried goodness. It's like the souffle of frying things. Everything here is god damn amazing, all the ingredients taste fresh and bright and when incorporated with their perfected tempura batter, you'll be seeing little tempura bits in your dreams for days. They probably carbonate their water ever more than normal or something. I wouldn't be surprised if the chef/creator sold his/her soul to have learned the secrets of tempura making. The ingredients and tempura batter compliment each other perfectly, not one outshining the other. I've had a chance to try just almost everything they offer, but of course the what makes this place uniquely special and what caught my attention is the tempura soft-egg. Now I remember the first time I had this, I just felt so silly, how could I never have though of making something like this, it's so genius and simple yet complex that's what makes it so damn beautiful. I am almost certain this was the reason the chicken crossed the road, this guy was just making tempura battered chicken feed and the chicken couldn't stop having enough of it. Till one day the chicken didn't make it. The tempura master went to look for the chicken and saw the chicken's children, and you know what he decided to do to honor the chicken? The master tempura battered the chicken's children and we have today, the most amazing tempura creation to exists. In all seriousness, this place is amazing I hope this review doesn't overcrowd this place. As with the other Mitsuwa food court options this is a no frills eatery. I recommend their signature soba noodles, which are cooked a nudge past al dente and are served with their umami-laden broth (if you order hot soba, which I prefer) or dipping sauce (for cold soba). In Taiwan, Hannosuke is most known for their tempura and after taking a bite of their boiled egg tempura, I could see why. The breading was crispy and satisfyingly fried without being overly greasy. I was particularly partial to the boiled egg because hello rich oozing egg yolk, but the shrimp tempura and vegetable tempura were all insanely delicious. Ramen is soba's flashier younger cousin and people often go to Mitsuwa to eat at Santouka. But give this Japanese classic a try! read more

This is my go to spot in the food court. I love their tempura as it is always well fried. I always get the original tendon. It is one of the pricier stores in this food court, but it's worth it. Finally I went to this tempura restaurant inside Mitsuwa. Ordered edomae and original tendons. Not talking about connective tissue that connects muscle to bone. Ten for tempura and don for donburi. Ten-don = tempura over rice. Edomae ($12.95): Unagi, 2 shrimps, sishito pepper, scallop-shrimp tempura, sweet potato and seaweed. I could just get its original $8.95 bowl but I wanted the unagi tempura. The unagi tempura is soggy and sadly my least favorite item in this bowl. Original ($8.95): The same as edomae but you get white fish instead of unagi. The white fish tasted kinda similar to its unagi friend. The sauce is good and the tempura batter is yum. Too bad the tempuras are soggy. They are freshly made and you ahve to wait about 10 minutes. Your meal comes with miso soup and yummy ginger. Hannosuke isn't quite Hanno-Suck-ay, but it wasn't very good Tempura. Located in the Mitsuwa Marketplace, Olivia and I split a #1 Original Plate. I might give it another try sometime, but neither of us was very impressed with our first taste test. The tempura plate came with White Rice, a Soft-Fried Egg, and a pile of Vegetables and Shrimp fried Tempura-style. Unfortunately, the tempura pieces were overbreaded with thick tempura-like texture and dripping oil instead of a light, crunchy panko freshness. The best part of the meal might of been the Egg. For fast food, it wasn't very fast. It took more than 30 minutes to get our order. We ordered ramen from Santouka and were almost done eating the noodles by the time the tempura order was ready. The Portuguese may have introduced tempura to Japan back in the day, but the Japanese have taken it to another level. Coming from Hawaii, I like to think that we have some great Japanese food, but the Edomae Tendon at Hannosuke just blew me away. Situated in the food court of the Mitsuwa Marketplace, what I love about Hannosuke is that they specialize in one thing and that is tendon (tempura rice bowl). Being that I was quite hungry after a long night of drinking, I decided to go with the Edomae Tendon. Priced at only $13, this delectable bowl of fried goodness over rice consisted of the following deep fried items: anago, shrimp, nori, egg, kakiage, sweet potato, etc. As delicious as everything was, what I also liked were the generous portions and the fact that everything is cooked made to order. Needless to say, I was quite satisfied by not only the sheer quantity of food, but also the high quality. Next level tempura... That probably sums it up. I remember eating next door at Santouka many years ago and noticing how good the tempura over at Hannosuke looked. I regret not trying it soon after. In recent months, I've heard so many good things so I finally had to make my way over to Mar Vista. I ordered the edomae tendon ($12.99). That comes with a big piece of anago, 2 pieces of shrimp, soft boiled egg, kakiage, seaweed and a shishito pepper. All of which were new to me in tempura dining except the shrimp. The anago was delicious. I loved it. In sushi, anago is my absolute favorite so I already knew this was a sure thing. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. All of the tempura pieces were. The seaweed was good. The shishito pepper was a little too spicy for my taste. The soft boiled egg was interesting but good. Crack it and let the yolk run over the rice, Yumm... The kakiage was excellent. It was a mixture of baby shrimp and vegetables, in kind of like pancake form. I could eat double the amount of ingredients they served. It was all so tasty. The batter was perfectly crunchy. The sweet broth they pour over the tendon (tempura bowl) was perfect in flavor. The rice was even cooked perfectly. I cant wait to go back. I need more anago. I need more kakiage. And I def need another soft boiled egg tempura in my life. I think next time I will get the more basic bowl and add the extras that I'm craving. My mouth... Hannosuke specializes in Ten-Don or Tempura rice bowl. Everything is fried, down to the soft boiled egg and the sheet of seaweed so it's not exactly health food. You can choose from 10-12 different combinations. The original has 2 shrimps, a fairly big slice of whtie fish, sweet potato, seaweed, and an egg. That's confusingly #2 on the menu. The Ten-Don itself is pretty darn awesome except for the fact that there was no veggies in my bowl at all. Everything is fried fresh when you order and they dip the tempura in this amazing sauce. It's not the typical ginger and soy sauce you usually get at Japanese restaurants. Their sauce is more robust and does a great job at sticking to the tempura. Hannosuke is located inside the food court at the Mitsuwa near Mar Vista. They only take cash. In fact, the whole food court only accepts cash. They do have a little BofA ATM inside and there's a Chase in the same plaza. I will be back one day to try their #1 bowl called the Edomae Ten-Don. Instead of white fish, they use anago or sea eel. It is a thing at penetrates ones imagination, surrounds ones defenses and unravels the deepest chambers of ones heart. Tendon #2 with Ango. The combination of crisp/soft/rich satisfaction is crowned by the golden river of yolk that flows from the crunchy encasement. Follow the lines of people; don't be tempted by the plastic bowls of udon, curry, and chicken katsu in other shops' windows!There are really only two good options if you find yourself at Mitsuwa: ramen (Santouka) and tempura (Hannosuke). Everything else is rather forgettable. In general, the tempura at Hannosuke is probably some of the best I've had in LA. Each piece is coated in crunchy, thick, flavorful batter that would probably ruin any diet. Your choice of tendon (original, edomae, shrimp, or chicken) will dictate what fried pieces of goodness you receive. Basically, all four variations feature kakiage (mixed tempura), shrimp (normally two pieces), pepper, seaweed, and soft boiled egg. But, the original comes with whitefish, the edomae comes with a HUGE piece of anago (conger eel), the shrimp comes with two extra pieces of shrimp, and the chicken, as the name suggests, has a piece of chicken. All this is served over a sizable bed of rice, which probably has absorbed some of the sweet sauce poured over the tempura. You might be surprised that you don't receive any dipping sauce, but you really don't need this since the drizzled sauce nicely complements the flavor of the batter. In addition to the entree, you also get a small bowl of miso soup and some ginger to cleanse your palate with. Aside from the tendon, Hannosuke also has combinations of soba (hot or cold) and tempura / tendon as well as tempura / vegetable boxes. Unlike some of the other restaurants at Mitsuwa, you can use credit card (Visa or MC) as long as your order is a minimum of $5. Parking in the Mitsuwa parking lot can be tough during peak hours, but if you're patient enough, you most likely will find something. Otherwise, you might try parking in the residential neighborhoods nearby. Definitely try Hannosuke if you're looking for something deep-friend and delicious! I just love coming to Mitsuwa Marketplace for its awesome food court. I was here last week having ramen at Santouka when I noticed a gentleman next to me was enjoying a delicious bowl piled with mixed seafood tempura. It was a sight of heavenly bites. I knew right then and there that a return visit over the weekend was a must as my insatiable appetite had me craving fried and battered. Like most of the eateries in Matsuwa, there are no full service wait staff and cash only. You simply order at the window, handed a slip of paper with a number and wait for your number to be called over the PA. Specializing in seafood tempura, the menu is simple and the pictures over the counter is universally stupid proof in any language. One glance at #1 Edomae Tendon photo had me at "Hello." This seafood delight was comprised of fried eel, soft-boiled egg, shrimp, sweet potato, nori, shishito peppers and kakiage of shrimp (shrimp like fritters) and scallops. Modestly priced at $12, it was certainly worth it. Everything is fresh and made to order. While waiting for my seafood treat, I had the opportunity to watch the chefs prepare my order through the kitchen door partially covered by a curtain. I waited 15 minutes for my order to be called and while walking back to my table, everyone that I passed were at "oooh" & "aah" envious of my heaven in a bowl. It was nicely presented, piled high and accompanied with a small bowl of miso soup and pickled ginger. The batter was beautifully golden, not oily and perfectly crisp drizzled with edo-style sauce (dashi, Miriam and soy sauce). One bite and I was in fried seafood bliss. The shrimp and fried eel were seasoned well, tender and delicious. I love hard boil egg, but battered and deep fried...simply sublime! I poked it with my chopstick and the yolk started oozing out coating the rice. Oh maaan! I truly feel the love in this dish. Every component, including the shishito peppers, nori and sweet potatoes were terrific. What a great gem Mitsuwa Marketplace has been. Not only do I have a great ramen place to visit, I now have superb seafood tempura joint to satisfy my insatiable appetite for Japanese food. All that is missing is good sushi which hopefully will come someday, but one thing is certain I will be back for these deep fried delectable treats. read more

Hannosuke is one of the staple foods everytime we went to Mitsuwa (either this Mitsuwa or the one in Torrance). We always ordered Hannosuke number 1: the original tendon (fried fish, shrimps, seaweed, broccoli on top of rice). Or sometimes when we got other stuffs like ramen from Santouka or curry, we only got a la carte tempura, like shrimps or fish. I had been to their original location in Japan, where I had to wait for 2 hours for their tempura don. I know that the tempura here cannot compete with the one in Japan, but for 2 minutes wait in Mitsuwa, I think that will be do. Oh, and also my dad really likes the tempura dipping sauce. He said it is some kind of special soy sauce or something. For me, it is just regular tempura sauce. But, you can prove me wrong! read more

"OMG that looks delicious, everything is fried!" - Person walking by and saw our food. Yes. Tendon is a bowl of tempura deliciousness. The boyfriend was craving tendon, so after a few days of waiting we went! I was always curious about this place. It was the last food establishment in the Mitsuwa food court that I had yet to try. I got the shrimp bowl ($8.95) was worth the price with all the shrimp varieties that were in it. There was a tempura shisito pepper and nori that was also dipped in batter and fried. The piece de resistance was the tempura soft boiled egg. Make room in your bowl for the runny yolk goodness that will ensue when you pop that bad boy. The meal comes with the small bowl of miso soup, and the rice underneath the tempura is cooked just right. I would have preferred they not put sauce on the tendon before hand so we can season to our liking. I also could have stood to have the shrimp a little crispier. Generous food portions, the tempura is spot on. Very crunchy and tasty. Fast fresh service...the only complaint would be one of the cashiers outfit. It has nothing to do with the food and service but she was wearing cropped top...it was distracting and tasteless. We came back to pick up our food and her supervisor asked her where her shirt was and she said her shirt would give them more tips and business. Not sure what kind of business you're trying to get but this is not a hooters or Plan B. It's a family type food court and were a bit disgusted knowing that her belly was sticking out near our food. read more
