Used to be my favorite spit. But the inconsistency of the food really ruined my appetite. Sometimes the salmon or mackerel could be fresh, and sometimes dry and old. The service is non existent. The same cashier who has been working there for years did not provide napkin or sauce before calling my number. I will take my business elsewhere. I hope their Vancouver location does a better job. First time going to Mitsuya Market and a friend told me about Hannosuke. Arrived at 12 and there was a very long line for the go-to orders- a very good sign in the Covid era. I ordered the tempura combo and chicken tendon combo. After 20 minute car ride with the tempura smell permeating in my car, I couldn't wait to taste it! The chicken tendon was lightly battered, almost too light. The shrimp tempura was fried nicely as well as the vegetables. Miso soup - excellent. I liked the soft boiled egg on top of the rice. This restaurant is inside the Mitsuwa Market Place food court. They specialize in tempura and tempura rice bowls. Overall, the quality of their tempura is ok, actually fine for a fast food restaurant. The prices are not bad, either. I ordered the Edomae Tendon (Tokyo style tempura rice bowl because I like sea eel. Ironically, the part I was most unhappy about was the eel. It was a bit too smelly. Eels often do have some smell, but their eel had a bit too much of it. It's probably because they use a very inexpensive low quality ingredient. Also, as you can see in my photos, there's a clear difference between what you are supposed to get and what you do get. In fact, they forgot to put a shishito pepper on my bowl. Otherwise, my experience here is ok, nothing to brag about. I'll probably come back here but I would not order anything with eels. read more

Nothing special to me, good to get some calories to survive throughout the day, and that's pretty much all I can say. My favorite tendon place! I've been coming back here for years. It's a worth-it price! The original, shrimp, and chicken are all $10.98 per bowl. Each gives a good amount of food to leave you feeling satisfied. The tendon is made by frying but this place typically serves it soft, not crispy. The side of hot miso soup it comes with is pretty decent and the ultimate finisher for the tendon bowl. I almost always order the Original. It comes with a piece of fish fillet, 2 shrimps, a soft boiled egg, 1 strip of tempura covered seaweed, shishito pepper, pumpkin, and a chunky broccoli. The fish and shrimps are always juicy and flavorful. The shishito pepper isn't spicy at all if you're worried about that. The pumpkin is a nice, sweet treat that contrasts with the overall saltiness of the other dishes. The broccoli is admittedly my least favorite part but I eat it and pat myself on the back for eating my vegetables. Make sure to give yourself a pat too. read more

The food I received that was edible was pretty good. Soba and tempura were above average. My problem is the food I received that wasn't edible. I ordered the grilled mackerel. An order consists of 2 pieces of fish. 1 piece was normal and tasted good, the other piece was dark brown, hard as a rock, and obviously burnt. (See picture) I understand mistakes happen in the kitchen, but considering just how awful the fish looked, especially compared to the other piece of fish served in the same to go box that is the same type of fish, this was not a mistake, it was lazy and intentional. I placed my to-go order a half hour before the restaurant closed. I received my food about 5 minutes before they closed, and since I didn't get the food to eat there, the cook must have known they can give me this bad fish and by the time I realized it they would be closed by the time I drove back. I love Hannosuke. The chain in Japan that is. That is because quality and service are strictly observed there. Not so here at the Mar Vista branch. I want to support this place but they are just poorly managed on multiple fronts: Service: Rarely will the employees there look at you in the eyes. Typically they are moving from one section of the narrow kitchen to another. They are either busy looking down at their orders, cash register, or at each other. But their focus is never on their customers. I've never seen a smile by any employees there. The attitudes by the employees is the opposite of Japanese service and hospitality. Food: I could ignore the service if the food quality had not gone down so significantly over the past year or so. I've included a photo which highlights two important taboos in Japanese cooking: 1. Never overcook rice 2. Never undercook fried foods. The rice was wet, meaning the cooks carelessly eyeballed the amount of water to make it, and tempura was undercooked, which looks like it was simply rushed. The photo shows both if you know what you are looking at. Whoever owns this franchise, I encourage you to dedicate more time here.
