    Tempura
    Ana T.

This place is as good as Carlos Tendon and way cheaper. Dont be fooled that this is in a food court. Their tempura is soooo crispy and delicious. One of my favorite tempura spot and parking is easy too :) the service is fast too i ordered via the self order kiosk and got my food within 5 minutes

You have to get over the horrid service and you will be fine. Hannosuke is in a food court inside the most wonderful Japanese Market in Los Angeles. There are several places to eat there and a lot of seating to be had. Parking is easy in their huge lot. We go there a lot. We often get take away, but we have eaten there several times. We love their food. Their prices are fair and you get what you pay for. They make it fresh there so it is never cold or dried out. They have some of the best shrimp tempura we have had. It is just as good as fine dinning. The shrimp are a good size and the batter is perfect, never just too much batter. Their rice is great and we really love the dumplings. You can order this as a meal, the menu is on the wall. They have a great selection of dishes. I always change my up. I just want tempura, not the fried veg. The dumplings are great as is. It is all great. The table you sit at is kept clean by someone I assume the food court shares. Now, the bad news. The service here is just beyond rude, unhelpful and this is always the way it is when we are there. We have been maybe 10 times. It is always the same woman who just wants nothing to do with you. She sits behind a dirty, thick glass and if you try to talk to her, have fun. She will point to the wall, have you look to the note on the counter that says "here" and "To go". She really wants you to order from this tablet. I do have to speak to her to tell her all shrimp tempura, no veg. She does not respond. Now, she can talk and she does speak English. She is just so very rude and I guess hates her job. Anyway, you get a bill, you pay her and you get a number. When your food is ready you go get it. Now, she can pull this all off so rudely, never with a smile. She is just not a nice person. But suck it up. The food is worth it.

A casual Japanese tempura and soba kiosk inside the market. You quickly order on the tablet and they will call your number when ready. Tables available and restrooms as well. I recommend the tempura and soba combo! You can have it cold or hot soba.

They specialize in tempura. Frshly served with hot ponzu dipping sauce. Fast and clean.

Original Tendon was excellent. Well prepared. The sauce is especially notable. I was surprised that when I asked for a cup of water and was told: not available. I asked if there was freer water anywhere in the food court and and again told. No. So I had to go to the grocery becersge section and choose a Ochoa tea. What a senselessly stupid policy. Otherwise recommend

I think a lot of people are hating because they expect fine dining. That's not what this place is all about. Hannosuke has great fresh tempura dishes at half the price of anything you'll find on Sawtelle or Little Tokyo. There is also rarely a line up, or waiting for hours just to get a seat. Their shrimp tempura is a must, I usually get the bowl or combo depending on my mood. Also make sure to get the tempura poached egg, it's the star of the tempura show here. I'll definitely be back if I'm grocery shopping in Mitsuwa, in the future!

    Staff is protected with Plexiglass.

Although my last review was three years ago (in 2021), I've come back here a couple of times. And the last time was about a year ago. Notable points: They still have the plexiglass between you and and the staff. They don't accept cash. They now have a self-service POS terminal (see picture). So if you have a problem pressing your finger where everyone has pressed, that may be an issue. But it's good to know that they protect their staff. (And probably save on labor.) They still don't have free drinking water. Maybe that will never come back. So just need to buy or bring your own drinking water. A bottle of a 12-ounce water at Trade Joe's is only 17 cents so buy a couple when you do your groceries For my recent visit, I ordered the Vegetable Tempura for the first time bec I remembered after all the years that I was having Shrimp Tempura that I am allergic to Shrimp. I think the Vegetable Tempura came with Rice. But I'm sure it came with that Seaweed. And also Pepper. I also ordered a side of White Fish. That was good. The Vegetable Tempura was not so good. Maybe because it is vegetable. I wish I was not allergic to Shrimp. I also ordered Cold Soba. That was a lot of food. Next time I'm going to ask for a to-go container and bring home my leftover rice and vegetable tempura.

1.5 in unagi nuggets, made the shrimp look huge lol
    Maya M.

Been going here for years. Ordered one unagi tempura combo and couldn't believe the smallest pieces of unagi I've ever seen. They were tiny nuggets! The menu pic is deceptive, they want $17 ($3 more than the original) for less vegetables and 2 tiny 1.5" unagi nuggets that don't even touch the edge of the bowl. Being half Japanese, this is a shame. I've never seen unagi donburi pieces this small before. You guys should just take it off the menu.

After haircuts, I usually pop in to the Mitsuwa next door and have lunch. Hannosuke is one of the places we like for something quick and filling. However, small warning that while this spot is typically very good, there are days where the tempura can be just a tad bit too greasy. I wouldn't completely discount it though! The Original Tendon Set is still something I like to take my chances with because when it's still good. The reason for 4 stars only is because it's just not a hit 100% of the time. Food comes out fairly quickly but just make sure to listen carefully for your number to be called or you'll miss your meal!

Our go to spot for tempura plate sets! Spicy chicken tempura is always nice and consistent when you are craving fried stuff and the rice and egg on top is always a beautiful addition to complete the meal. Always a clean plate for us when we do have lunch or dinner here. Then off to the bookstore and market we go.

There's not a lot of service to rate, but my review is strictly based on my experience with a delicious bowl of tempura. The 5 star rating is base on both quantity and quality. For about $15, you get a bowl of perfectly fried spicy chicken tender, (2) tempura shrimp, and tempura broccoli, seaweed, and pumpkin and lastly a tempura gooey egg too. They top everything off with their tempura sauce. I always get their chili powder because I like the heat. Why do I like this bowl of rice so much? Well, if you've ever taken bite of heaven and just know this food is done exceptionally well. Then is the the bowl of leave me alone to my moment kind of experience. This is one of my top restaurants to try in L.A. Then there's Mitsuwa where you can go get a nice drink, of dessert if you choose to.

    Kids Tendon set
    Ashley H.

This place impressed me for being in a food court! This kids set was only $8 and it came with two shrimp, pumpkin, seaweed, egg, and rice! Love the runny egg and the batter on all the items was seasoned very well. Can't beat such a well priced meal in LA! Service was quick and food is fresh to order. Cozy cafeteria style seating too.

I enjoyed the easy ordering, delicious tempura, egg, shishito peppers. Had some nice togarishi seasonings as well. Serve yourself, and there's the food hall ambiance. Tempura was crispy, fresh, heavenly. I'll definitely be back soon!

Even though I have dietary restrictions, I'm pretty sure there's going to be something on the menu that I could eat. Now when I got there and I saw the very brief menu, I was stunned and I was like, oh my gosh, I should've looked at the menu before I came here This looks like I'm about to be eating a bunch of raw fish. But to my surprise when I looked closely, I was able to see that there was a whole section of grilled foods and appetizers that I could eat. I ended up ordering: - the miso soup - the edamame - the cucumber salad (for appetizers) - sea bass - oyster mushrooms - shrimp - the ginkgo nuts Every single food item that I ordered was delicious. I was genuinely surprised by how flavorful everything was and I was particularly impressed with the sea bass and oyster mushrooms. These two dishes were phenomenal. I don't know how they made that sea bass so flaky and moist and just melt in your mouth but it was so good. I don't know what sauce they put on top of it but that thing was amazing. The oyster mushrooms were so good that we ordered two more orders of it. For the edamame, the only thing I didn't like was that it was served cold. I don't know if that's like a traditional way of serving it or something but I'm used to having my edamame be served warm or hot so that was unusual for me. The server was amazing, super attentive and very kind. He always made sure we had what we needed and there was even something that was mistakenly served to us but he took it off the bill and allowed my friend to eat it anyway so we were grateful for him. He was also really good at explaining the menu and the dishes that he liked. The vibe in here is social but a little classy. There were these ladies that were sitting to the left of us and one of them just randomly started talking to us and asking us if we were from the neighborhood, which was a little odd because... why are you asking me those questions??? Other than that the vibe was fine and I would definitely come back here again. One thing to note though is that the food is served kind of like tapas style so if you're expecting massive portions and to be stuffed to discomfort, this is not the place where that's going to happen.

The Santa Monica one is more grab and go as it's their smaller flagship location. This business has been carried by the owner Keiko who has brought a slice of Japan outside of the designated communities of West LA's Sawtelle and DTLA's Japan Town! Here (at either location) you will find unique delicious flavors of omusubi but also called onigiri rice balls! That you won't find anywhere else! Rice balls are actually shaped into triangles and stuffed or mixed with simple ingredients like a salted plum called ume (it tastes salty, and tangy with a touch of sweetness) To more engaging offerings like the lucky cat with japanese pickles with fresh wasabi, ginger, and bonito(dried fish that is sliced paper thin) These finger foods can be enjoyed as a snack or grab a few to make a meal. The Culver City Location has a decor that immerses you in Japan. They have a small market section with alcohol such as saki, handmade dishware from Japan, cute claw machines for kids, and expanded meal offerings! Besides Keiko being absolutely amazing, the food is as well! From curry stuffed to fresh shisho leaves and pickled wasabi!!! There's lots to choose from and the best part.,,.they have always had an expansive vegan menu! Yes they are very Vegan Friendly! I love the Eggplant Chili Miso and Wasabi Tsukudani. We were in the area for my son's doctor's appointment and discovered this place nearby. What a bonus! If you're anywhere close, it's absolutely worth a visit. The sushi here is next-level. You can immediately taste the quality of the ingredients--the freshness of the rice, the fish, and the attention to detail in every bite. I started with salmon and tuna nigiri, plus a salmon roll that was cut into small bite-sized pieces. Honestly, I was popping them into my mouth like candy. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. They also have a great selection of hot foods. Right when you walk in, you're greeted by freshly prepared unagi (eel), which looked amazing. They also offer katsu, and other ready-to-eat items. I grabbed a Spam musubi, and wow--it may be the best Spam musubi I've ever had, even better than some I've had in Hawaii. The Spam still had a slight crispiness, the egg added richness, and the seasoning brought everything together with an incredible umami flavor. What I love most is that the place reminds me of a Japanese convenience store (konbini)--but an upscale version. It's like Tsukigi market had a store in Ginza. You can buy fresh seafood, ingredients to make your own sushi at home, or simply grab a meal and enjoy it there. The quality throughout the store is outstanding. The atmosphere is great too. There's always a buzz of people shopping for sushi or enjoying their food outside in the seating area. It feels lively and authentic. One suggestion: try to get there early if you can. They had so many ready-made sushi trays, rolls, nigiri, and prepared foods available, but a lot of them were already nearly sold out by the time I got there. I noticed a sign saying items are made fresh regularly throughout the day, which is a great sign of how popular and fresh everything is. Still, if you want first pick of all the goodies, I'd recommend arriving earlier. My only real complaint is the parking. The lot is small, and during busy times you'll probably need some patience. I visited on a weekday during rush hour, but once I got my food, it was completely worth it. The drive back to Simi Valley flew by because I couldn't stop eating and thinking about how good everything was. I honestly can't wait to find another excuse to come back. This place is such a treat. If you're looking for high-quality sushi, fresh seafood, delicious prepared foods, and a taste of Japan without getting on a plane, this place delivers.

Also, Jeremy Allen White from The Bear also touted it as one of his favorite restaurants in LA. That being said, I was really excited to potentially try this place when I was in the area this past weekend. Although I did not have a reservation, my friends and I waited outside 30 minutes before opening to see if there was a chance that maybe my group could grab dinner at the bar or maybe sneak in a walk-in table. For a Saturday night, we were second in line for standby and we lucked out! The hostess was really accommodating though she said we had to be out within an hour and 45 minutes, which was totally feasible (so long as the team expedited our dishes)! The ambience of the place was beautiful, and I particularly enjoyed the fact that we were on the rooftop area, so it had an alfresco dining feel. What we ordered: COCKTAILS (recommend both) 1) Last word - very tasty and refreshing 2) White Negroni - refreshing as well! FOOD 1) Duck confit mixed rice - The portion was incredibly small and while it was unique, not sure I would order it again 2) Sweet corn - This was surprisingly yummy and exceeded my expectations (since I was expecting creamed corn) 3) Bluefin tuna sashimi - This was a bit underwhelming for the price. 4) Crispy aji sando - This was certainly unique but not that memorable 5) Chicken thighs karaage - This was quite delicious and reminded me of my dad's cooking. Lots of flavor, crispy while not being too oily. 6) Apricots with purple daikon - Very refreshing and love how the apricots were highlighted 7) Japanese eggplant - Disappointed since it was under seasoned. Needed acid and or salt to bring some depth 8) Charred broccolini - Delish and flavorful. Reminded me of the charred broccoli dish at Campfire in Carlsbad 9) Roasted sweet potato - Had great flavor and really enjoyed this one! 10) Duck meatball - Very flavorful and no surprise it is a popular dish 11) Lamb shoulder - Not gamey at all and was very delish as well! All in all, we were happy to try this place since it was on the list for a while. The ambience and service were great and while we appreciated the vast menu, we were left a bit underwhelmed for the price. Perhaps its the price tag that comes with having a restaurant in Venice.

-- Amazing Sushi & A Dining Experience Like No Other! We…read moretook our 2-year-old and had the most incredible family dinner at Mikomi Sushi in Santa Monica. From the moment we sat down, everything was just perfect. The sushi was absolutely outstanding -- fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The sauces were on another level, perfectly complementing every single bite. Everything we ordered was delicious, and you can tell real care goes into every dish coming out of that kitchen. The ambiance was really lovely too -- warm, comfortable, and inviting. The kind of place where you just settle in and feel good being there. It made the whole evening that much more enjoyable for the whole family. Now here's what made this visit truly special -- there was a robot server delivering sushi right to the table! My 2-year-old was completely glued to it -- wide eyes, the biggest smile, entertained the entire meal. As any parent knows, keeping a toddler happy at a restaurant is half the battle, and Mikomi made that effortless and fun. The human staff were also incredibly warm and attentive, making us feel genuinely welcomed the whole time. If you want top-tier sushi and a dining experience that's fun for the whole family, Mikomi Sushi is an absolute must. We will definitely be back! P.S. -- My wife loved it so much that she visited twice on her own while I was at work. I think that says everything you need to know.
