This evening Carol and I plus a large group of Hathaway Tower residents attend the play Gabriel "The True Story You Were Never Told" at the Historic Hanover Tavern in Hanover Virginia. The play details the life of Gabriel Prosser, who planned and led one of the most significant slave rebellions in American history. Born in 1776, Gabriel fought for the freedom of enslaved Virginians during a time when promises of liberty were denied to many, and he ultimately sacrificed his life for the cause. The musical, featuring new and rewritten songs, runs from September 26 to November 9, 2025 and in my humble opinion is a must see. read more

Quaint historic pub/restaurant. Ample parking and charming exterior and interior. Staff is friendly and cheerful. The menu offers a variety of options and includes specials (Wednesdays - $10 burger and fries). The club sandwich I ordered was a generous portion of fresh ingredients and very tasty. Fries were hand cut but a bit greasy and undercooked. Prices are very reasonable. Soft rock music playing added to the relaxing ambience. read more

It's been years since I left a review, but last nights dinner was pitiful. Dinner for 6 and a busy night. Ordered drinks, apps, apps came out quickly and were good (fried oysters and cheese curds). But our problems began when our waitress Lisa brought the drinks from the bar. My husband ordered the inkjet blackberry mint cider and was brought a beer, suspect it was probably DB, which he likes both but a cider is certainly not a beer. When he confronted our waitress and brought the discrepancy to her attention, she was argumentative and invited my husband to go down to the bar with her to sort it out. He took her up on her offer and did return to the table with cider not with what she had initially served him. Mistakes happen but piss poor attitude makes it an issue. Dinner was not great for any of us (steak frites x3, fried catfish, rockfish, and shrimp and grits). Fried okra, fried catfish, and the shrimp (fried and not fried) were the edible items. Food was unseasoned overall and needed hot sauce which we requested and received. We let the manager know of our issues when she came by our table, not looking for hand outs or comps but for majority of us having been in the service industry at one time, and one currently in the service industry, let her know the disappointment in the dinner but mostly with our waitress. Checks brought and our friend (the one in the service industry) was told when her check was delivered that the comped her husband's meal. The steak frites that were completely inedible with added shrimp. She looked at the bill and they ended up discounting the shrimp. Unexpected but a bit misleading considering it was the entree he didn't eat. We enjoyed our show after dinner. But we will never return to the restaurant, bad food and worse service. read more

We attended Hanover Tavern's "Titanic Tea" event today and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience! I tried new foods and new tea at a new place with new people! My favorite tea was the Darjeeling. I loved trying all the treats with cream, too. I really liked ham and pimento. And my favorite scone was the tomato! I surprised myself with that one. It was also interesting to try the scones with various combinations of the clotted cream, strawberry jam, and butter.  A few suggestions from the table:  Consider serving pots of brewed tea. Teas have specific temps and stepping times and we oversteeped a few times. Also, we had a really difficult time opening some of the tea bag packaging and stepping for 5-7 mins uses time and attention we could spend enjoying the event. Premade tea also seems more genuine to the theme. Possibly rotate the teapot variety for each course, kind of like wine pairing. Three courses, three teas, three items in each course with three accoutrements!  Consider fresh plates between courses. This seems like standard practice and may be more authentic to the theme. Serving each person directly instead of shared trays would also provide a fresh plate between courses and help with people not touching each other's food and getting the correct quantity.  Consider adding a photo backdrop with your event logo and/or brand logo somewhere in the frame. We attended a pop up bar/show called Shipwreck Saloon here this past weekend. We weren't sure what to expect but you always have a vision in your head. Well, it was nothing like the vision I had and when it began, I thought I would be disappointed but I am glad to say I wasn't. It was a simple stage and the best way to describe it is a 4 part story telling about the life of a pirate who opened Shipwreck Saloon. It was entertaining and funny and there was some hilarious audience participation. In between the 4 parts, a different rum cocktail was served which were good. I would recommend this show if you find it in your area. It was something different for an evening out and was entertaining! read more

We recently held a gala of about 120ish people for a small non profit. The staff were helpful and kind. The food was hot and delicious. We needed in a little early and it wasn't an inconvenience. Nice little niche place to stop. Is one of the two remaining taverns on the trail from Richmond to Washington DC during the colonial times. Staff was amazingly, friendly and attentive . The soups were outstanding, however, the entrée we chose was a pasta special with chicken added. The chicken was done very well. The cornbread was amazing. The pasta was executed very poorly in texture taste and ingredients. Still it's worth a stop, the fireplace was warm and the staff was wonderful. I am surprised they did not dress in. A fun night out to see a show in the theater and have dinner. So nice you can do both here. The food was really good and we love the small intimate nature of the theater. Very cool ambiance and I enjoyed learning some of the history. The food was fantastic. I had the oyster Benedict and it was absolutely delicious. Service is very slow, but we also had a big party on a busy Sunday brunch timeframe. The server was very nice, but just not necessarily in a hurry. I loved learning some of the history of the building. They were hosting a bridal show later that day, so they were just beginning to set up for that, as well. There were lots of things on the menu that looked absolutely delicious. Pricing was reasonable, if not a little expensive, but the quality of the food was top notch. If I could leave ZERO STARS I would. This was the absolute WORST, overpriced, and disgusting experience I have had in my 30+ years on this planet. Every single item that came to my table was inedible. Every single food item was over seasoned, over or UNDER cooked, and yet also somehow cold. When I voiced my complaints to the staff, including server, bartender, and manager; I was met with the most disgusting attitudes, thinly veiled insults to myself and my party, as well as a for lack of better words "fake folksy charm", that left me not only thouroughly dissatisfied but was also offended ZERO compensation for the inedible food and drinks. This establishment is a sad, horrible, overprice, poorly managed, nightmare. Do yourself a favor and steer clear. 0/10. read more

Hanover Tavern is steeped in history and is a nice spot to visit for a break from the city or if you're already in the area. I've been twice - once for lunch and more recently for dinner. For lunch, I ordered from their brunch items menu and selected the snickerdoodle pancakes. They came with cooked apples and home fries, and I added a side of bacon. The bacon was delicious, but the pancakes were a tad dry. I heard the pecan French toast was phenomenal, though. My second visit was a mid-week dinner reservation. I booked for 6:30 about a week in advance and they take reservations until 7 pm. Upon arrival, there was some confusion among the hosts as to where to sit us since the dining room was booked. I said first available was fine in an attempt to make it easier, and they moved an outside table out of direct sun and into a shady part. Unfortunately they didn't assign us a server, so after at least 20 minutes of watching the two servers walk by us without looking over, a manager came over to take our orders. I ordered the roast turkey with mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts, and my mom ordered fried chicken. The food arrived in a timely fashion. But then we were forgotten again. Eventually the events manager came over and asked if we had gotten our checks. My mom wanted dessert, and they said it'd be on the house for all the hiccups (at this point, it was almost fully dark and bats were flying). She asked for it to go, but then it didn't come out until we asked someone where it was because we wanted to leave. It was a super long affair for what should've been a basic dinner. My mom loved her food and kept raving about how good it was, so I don't think it'd deter a return. I was just confused considering they realized within the first half hour that we didn't have a server. Why weren't we then given a server...? Organizational issues aside, I'd maybe return one day once staffing issues are sorted, and I'm sure the service would be better with a server. read more

Group of 6 dined for Sunday brunch. They had just opened, so they weren't busy. The orders were taken, and after an extensive wait, three of the orders were delivered to the table. One additional plate of food arrived, but it was a completely incorrect order and was sent back. Over 20 minutes later parts of the other three orders started to arrive. Eggs that came were cooked incorrectly and were sent back, bread came with no butter. Food was cold. In addition, from the original three orders that were first delivered, a salad arrived after the meal was almost completely eaten, and an order of grits, which were inedible, were delivered as the food was just about gone. Of course, when the checks came, two of the three were wrong. On top of all this, never once was there an apology for the delay. Never once was there an apology for the wrong food being delivered. The manager never made an appearance. Luckily this wasn't any of our first visits, so we know they're capable of a better experience, but after this one, we most likely will never come back. read more

Beautiful tavern with historical relevance. It was a picture perfect day as there was a wedding getting set up downstairs. My friend and I made a random stop for lunch and couldn't have made a better choice in Ashland. I don't remember what I ordered for lunch but I'm here to say the crispy Brussels Sprouts are drool worthy. I ate all of it and got an order to go! My family and I revisited Hanover tavern today, and besides still being an awesome historic site with a really knowledgeable front desk, we also had a great dining experience. I think we came on an off day last time because the food was amazing this time. We started with the hush puppies and pretzels and beer cheese which were both really tasty. I had eggs Benny, the hollandaise was super creamy and the English muffin was amazing. We also had the fried chicken sandwich, the kitchener, and revisited the brisket sandwich. Everything was tasty. The brisket sandwich was actually brisket and tasted amazing. I'm glad we gave this place another try. I would definitely recommend it. read more

Lunch with friends - we all ordered the "special" at $17 - fish and sides. Fish was cooked well but was the size of a woman's palm - and very thin. The french fries - a huge pile - were nearly burnt and inedible. Cole slaw amounted to about two bites, served in a condiment container. Waitress was unkempt and indifferent. We had my daughter's wedding reception in the Taylor Room in mid June and I cannot sing praises high enough. The staff (If I get any of these names wrong, I apologize) was incredible, from Krissy and Mel organizing everything, to Kelly and Becca working as wait staff, to Don, the bartender making everyone feel at ease. I would really like to call out Tristan, who handled any problem we thought we had, almost before we knew it. The wedding was held at Maymont Park, in Richmond, then we had a small, intimate reception. The team at Hanover Tavern made the whole event memorable and enjoyable. The food was fantastic, and the overall mood was incredible. The fried chicken and hushpuppies were particularly memorable. The team allowed us to come in the day before and spend an hour setting up, making the already busy wedding day, go incredibly smoothly, and allowing us to put our own feel on the already cozy space. read more

I was in the Hanover area attending a Randolph Macon football game and decided to check out the Hanover Tavern. I'd seen sign for it and was curious about it. It's a beautiful building with lots of different rooms to dine in. We ultimately decided to sit in the bar area. It was cozy, with low ceilings and lower lighting. I had the fried green tomatoes and hush puppies. Both were delicious!! My friend had a burger that was also very good. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and she definitely made us feel welcome. Definitely a great experience! read more

Originally came to do the Cadaver Escape Room, but as we were waiting for our friends we were told that our reservations would be cancelled due to the worker having an emergency. It would have been nice to have been told sooner, but on the upside they did offer a full refund and free lunch for our whole party, which was a group of eight. That is awesome customer service because you don't really see that too often. Lunch was great, all the food was good and tasty and the the service was excellent. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. We didn't get a chance to look around, but did see that they offered self guided tavern tours and different dinner events and a guided ghost tour. It all looked very interesting and fun. We would like to go back and do the escape room and other tours. It is a very nice place with a lot of history. read more

My wife had a smash burger and gave it high marks-pretty good achievement from someone who is a burger connoisseur!!! I had the country fried steak and would rate it outstanding. On a stormy Sunday evening we pulled into the Hanover Tavern parking lot looking for a nice dinner before continuing North to our home outside of Annapolis, Maryland. Having traveled this route many times we knew the Hanover Tavern was the last place for dinner for many more miles in the distance. When we entered the Tavern we were informed very cordially by Linda that the restaurant had already closed. We thanked Linda and asked if she knew of another restaurant in the area. There wasn't. Linda, however, asked us to wait a moment. When she returned Linda was accompanied by Mary Catherine ("MC") the Hanover Tavern Chef. Both asked for us to stay for dinner and that it would be no problem to keep the kitchen open. We thanked both for their kind offer but replied we did not want to impose. Linda and MC were adamant that we stay for dinner. We are so happy we did! The dinner MC prepared was absolutely fabulous. For my wife MC cooked a delicious and buttery salmon accompanied by a grilled squash medley, spoon bread, and herb sauce. Linda served a nice dry, but also buttery, Chardonnay. I ordered the amazing Pork Burgoo. The largest pork chop I have ever seen. The server (Jake) agreed. He called it "Big Boy." Big Boy is a locally grown in-bone Duroc pork chop. It was served over Kentucky Burgoo (a medley of corn, carrots, celery, and Lima beans), saffron rice, and topped with a red pepper relish. Delicious! Although the size of Big Boy almost put me into a food coma, my wife had room for the peach bread pudding. A wise choice. My wife loves bread pudding but the bread pudding served was the best she ever tasted. It was about three to four inches tall, filled with tasty local peaches, and whip cream on the side. After seeing this desert I had to snap out of my near coma and take a bite...or two...or three. Wonderful. Throughout the dinner Linda was frequently checking on us to ensure everything was in order and if we needed anything else. She kept my iced tea glass full. I was the driver. As wonderful as the meal was what impressed us the most was Linda's, MC's, and Jake's kindness and hospitality. We were treated like family. We frequently make the Richmond to Annapolis trip. A stop at the Hanover Tavern will be a permanent part of our agenda. We unequivocally recommend the historic Hanover Tavern. read more

We booked Hanover Tavern for our wedding reception, after being married across the street at the historic Hanover courthouse. AMAZING experience. Tammy at Hanover Tavern was there every step and answered all of my questions, and I had a ton. I highly recommend this as a venue for anyone looking for a low key, intimate celebration, party or event. We had approx. 45 people (including 10 children!), and it was perfect. They made our special day so easy and carefree! Beautiful decorations, delicious food (try to pulled pork YUM), and a wonderful calm environment. The staff was so great, it was like they were just part of the group of friends, helping out to make the day great! Plus it was super affordable! By far the best choice in the area for a budget! I really enjoyed this who experience and can't wait to celebrate our anniversary with them in the future. read more

We just recently moved to Mechanicsville and everyone said to try Hanover Tavern. I took my wife there for Valentines Day dinner. They had a great special in which you can pick 2 entrees. We both ordered the Filet and Scallops. They then informed us they were out of Baked Brussel Sprouts and were substituting Asparagus. Ok, wasn't what we wanted but were ok. Mind you, this was a special Menu for Valentines Day. About 20 minutes later, the hostess came out and asked if we had ordered the filet? She then informed us they were out of the Filet and could substitute for a Flat Iron Steak! Now, there is a big difference between a Filet and a Flat Iron Steak...but we really had no choice. The balance of the dinner was very good. Loved the Waldorf Salad with peanuts (very different) and the Mashed Potatoes were amazing! For desert we had the Creme Brûlée, which was also amazing. When the check came, they did discount our meal 20%, but there is still a bit of disappointment over not having the filet. I thought they would have planned better for their "special menu". The restaurant is very nice for being such a historic building and the history is amazing. It was really cool to eat in a building with such history and that is really the draw. I do recommend it for anyone who is especially a History buff! read more

The only thing worse than the service is the food. Ordered the "classic Benny," a version of Eggs Benedict with country ham in place of Canadian bacon, and got two hard boiled eggs on cold bread with no hollandaise sauce and no ham of any kind. When i ordered, the waitress asked if I'd like hash browns or apples...I said hash browns would be fine. The food came with country potatoes/home fries - which I honestly prefer to hash browns - but this option was never discussed. When asked how the food was I stated "there's no ham and the eggs are over cooked - but - I'm glad y'all served home fries instead of hash browns." The waitress said she'd fix the issues then returned a few minutes later and said "here are some more hash browns for you!" and handed me a bowl of home fries we later learned they charged us for. Turns out they just don't know what hash browns are...the issue of no ham being present was never acknowledged. The issues with service were that half the food we ordered was forgotten so we had to wait with only half of us having food getting cold while the waitress had the kitchen make the items she'd forgotten, then when plates were finished and second courses came the waitress just left all the dishes on our table - I had to gather them and move them to an empty table while the waitress stood there shocked we hadn't bussed our own table before she arrived. Terrible food, terrible service, and no attempts to take responsibility for or correct any of their errors - avoid Hanover Tavern unless you're looking for a good laugh and find mind blowing incompetence hilarious. read more

This is my third visit - dinner then a play. The plays are outstanding. Dinner is awful with horrible weight staff (we have gone every 6 months). A group of 4 takes 2 1/2 hours to get the meal therefore making you late for the play. As for food: 1 - filet mignon - when requesting "well done", it comes bloody rare (returned it, got another barely warmed - the positive, they did remove the charge) 2 - grilled veggies (brussel sprouts or broccoli) are deep fried first then broiled to get a blackened color - extremely oily and burned 3 - shrimp and grits are decent 4 - if you can get a desert, the pies generally seem to be homemade with generous portions Wait staff and person bringing food: 1 - don't refill water glasses 2 - don't check up on you to see if if food is ok 3 - dinner delivered at a separate time than other people at the table 3 - run out of desert by 7:45 4 - don't time coffee with desert 5 - person delivering food cannot change/correct an order or get you a bill 6 - waitress dawdles before coming with the check It isn't rocket science to see who has tickets to the theater (just ASK) - not that you should be rushed through your meal but you should be finished on time for the seating of the play. It's a shame they have terrible quality control. It's frustrating because it is convenient to the play and should be enjoyable. We will no longer have dinner here. read more

We followed the brown "historic site" signs on a whim and ended up being treated to a dining space with some great underground character, the house's excellent taste in music, and some truly wonderful food. It turned out to be the best night out for dinner we've had in a long time. Our server, Ryland was attentive and pleasant, and the chef for the night, Zach G not only prepared some fantastic meals, but came out to make sure we enjoyed the food. Apparently, they've made some changes recently, and whatever it was, we think it has paid off handsomely. Our first experience at the Hanover Tavern was absolutely delicious, and we'll be stopping by again on our trips through the area. P.S. With two side-dishes for your entrees, don't pass up on the four-cheese macaroni. It carried a lot of flavour without being overly salty the way cheese sauces can get. read more

My husband and I saw the games a foot show last Thursday. It was very good! Very funny and the actors were entertaining! The theater itself is small but in a comfy, quaint way. We did not have dinner so I cannot speak to this but the show was great. read more
