My husband and I were running errands in Montpelier, VA today, and stopped in to Dave & Phriends Grill for a dine-in lunch. (They also offer carry out and call ahead). It was our first visit. The lunch menu features burgers and hot dogs, submarine sandwiches, salads, desserts, and more. Also, of note, there is a deli case from which you can purchase deli meats, cheeses, homemade sides (such as macaroni salad, potato salad, coleslaw, or Italian pasta salad), and desserts (such as coconut cake, carrot cake, or chocolate chip cookies). Food. (4.5/5). We ordered two items to split: a 12" Philly Cheesesteak ($14.95) and a macaroni salad side (homemade. large, $4.25). The cheesesteak was juicy and very tasty. It was served warm on a long roll with grilled onions, grilled peppers, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. The fillings were generous; the restaurant did NOT skimp on the meat or veggies. The macaroni salad was fresh and good -- and I'm happy that we selected this item rather than fries or onion rings. In addition to the macaroni, the salad also featured mayo, small cubes of cheese, small tomatoes, and small pieces of jalapeño and banana peppers. We would've preferred it with celery and without the peppers but they weren't too overpowering. Service. (5/5). We ordered at the counter, and the girl there also brought my husband's water and later our food to the table. She was personable, and made it easy for us to eat our lunches -- having already cut and wrapped the foot-long sub into two servings, bringing two forks for the macaroni salad, etc. She independently handled all incoming patrons, both those who were dining in the restaurant and take out orders. Both she and the cook checked in on us to see if we needed anything else. Ambiance. (5/5). The restaurant has a cheery and comfortable environment. It seems to be popular with locals, as the girl at the counter greeted many of the patrons by name, and all seemed happy to be there. There are about six? tables that hold four persons each inside, and a few more outside with umbrellas. One corner has a book exchange, while the other side has self-service beverages, a cooler with drinks, and a condiments table. Finally. Pro: plentiful, free parking. Cons: (1) our table hadn't been wiped down, and had crumbs from the previous patrons. (2) the towel machine in the restroom didn't have towels and there wasn't an air dryer. (3) the cheesesteak was served on deli sandwich paper, which was messy with a juicy sub sandwich. We would eat here again when next in Montpelier!

Been coming here most Tuesdays since they moved here from Stanley's store. Best breakfast biscuits in the business hands down, would definitely recommend.

We stopped in here for a quick bite. It was pretty busy. It seems like many of the customers were regulars. I had a club sandwich and fries which were delicious. Very casual atmosphere.

I've been here many times. Dave is unique. Seems to remember folks and has a good time calling out to customers from the kitchen area. I often go for breakfast. I wish some things like the tots and the fries (for lunch) were a larger portion for what you pay. They specifically count out the number of tots and fries I believe and have them ready to be cooked on order. I think those portions are small for the money. The food is very good. Is it a little more $$ than if you went to say Short Pump? Maybe, but then I'd be driving back/forth. Like any business like this, he's had issues retaining staff. Sometimes I get very friendly service, other times a little more less polished. The quality of the food is what brings you back. I like the breakfast options.

Phenomenal phood at Dave & Phriends! Not that they are phishing for compliments, but they will be getting plenty of accolades with their phabulous menu! I've been there a phew times now, and have been pleasantly pleased each time! We ordered a delish burger and it was grilled to perfection. Next time I chose the fluffy breakfast biscuit with crispy bacon, egg and cheese which was just as satisfying! I would prefer some stronger "paper plates", the ones they serve their grub on are quite phlimsy and my meal spilled on the table. Just a suggestion ;-) I'm really glad this cozy spot has stayed afloat during the pandemic... it has made it a year since moving from Stanley's Store, a notable milestone! There's a handful of tables inside, and several others outside which is perfect for dining in warm weather! The restaurant and the restrooms are tidy and there's a self serve beverage station. There's also a deli case with cold cuts, cheeses, some prepared phoods, and some baked goods at the counter! For this type of eatery, it checks all the boxes, good prices, nice, fast service, friendly atmosphere, tidy and most of all yummy phood! This cool spot in Montpelier has a neighborhood feel and it has a strong community support! Whenever I'm in the area, I know I'll phind some good eats at phriends! (By the way, it's name pays homage to the owners fav band Phish!)

1egg,1 sausage patty, 2 silver dollar pancakes, 2 /8 oz coffees and 2 orders of tots!

I basically got a happy meal with an extra drink and tots for $17.xx 1 egg, 1 sausage patty, 2 silver dollar pancakes, 2/ 8 oz coffees, 2/ tots.

Dave's amazing "all the way" cheeseburger.

Best.Cheeseburger.Ever. Well... at least in a very long time. After learning today was my first visit, they happily explained their menu and highlighted customer favorites. Burgers are popular and I found out why. Amazing! Cooked perfectly to my requested "medium" temperature the loaded cheeseburger exceeded all expectations. I brought my to-go order home where my kids helped me finish it. They're already asking me to take them to Dave & Phriends. Great lunch stop! Next visit I'll try the Philly Cheesesteak.

Two large fries and a fountain drink

I can't believe I just paid $13.24 for two large fries (same box) and a 32 oz fountain Pepsi. Yikes. I know inflation is high but dang that's a lot.

Spacious patio area with clean tables and lots of seating.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found this little diner. Actually, it is spacious. Plenty of seating inside and out. The space is updated, yet comfy. Feels like you're at home. And the food definitely has a home-cooked vibe. I went for pancakes and cheesy eggs, with a mocha frappe (Starbucks). The menu was very straightforward and the cashier is helpful with suggestions. They do have a soda fountain as well as many choices for bottled drinks. They also have a nice little tea and coffee station. Everything is very neat and well organized. I love coming into a space where it's very clear that the staff takes pride in the business and how it's presented. What more can you ask for? There is plenty of parking. My meal was delicious, simple and extremely quick. The prices are reasonable. The restaurant is very clean, neat and inviting and the service is friendly. Most of the tables are for four people, so it would be easy to grab lunch with friends. Will probably visit again tomorrow while I'm in the area.

I was tasked with phoning in the reservation (thankfully the meal went better than that debacle)and since we were dining early it wasn't an issue. First of all, there are two places in the property; the Tavern and 5 Fields pizza and beer. We dined at the Tavern. GORGEOUS garden lining the old farmhouse! We went in and were seated inside right away. As it was almost 100 today it was ideal seating. The decore is well.... different. Where we sat was a truck grill from 1928, and there was more of a sports motiff. (If you go and sit in the same room, let me know if you can spot the crooked pic!) Once again, my curse at remembering names of the servers has hit again which is a real sham because she was beyond AWESOME. She was VERY patient with my extremely frustrating mum which was nice. We both got this truly genius idea of an appetizer to start; a veggie boat with a ranch style dressing. Omg it was perfect. Warm day, cruciferous veggies, ice cold drinks. Heaven. Next came the burgers, she got the Tavern burger, I got the Charles City burger. The Tavern has cheddar cheese and bacon, the Charles City has bree cheese and this creamy mojo ajo aoli along with fried shallots....there is probably more but all I know is that I feel like an idiot never having triple creme bree on a burger before. I have to take a moment to also inform you that they make the BEST Cosmo outside of NYC. Perfectly blended and chilled, and just strong enough to celebrate a Friday night. Yowza! One.more thing. They tempted me with a scoop of their home made butter pecan ice cream. I just want to move in and become one with this place it was so good. I haven't had butter pecan this good in 50 years!! After this essay I guess you could say that I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. It's in a beautiful area, lots of parking, great food & ambiance. I couldn't find a single fault.

They have a very limited menu at lunch so you have a few appetizers to choose from, a few salads and sandwiches and burgers, so straight up American food. It does skew southern with crab cake sandwich, pimento cheese and fried chicken. For an appetizer we decided to try the wings. They were good and came with ranch drizzled over the wings. For entrees my husband got their farm & oak burger with Cole slaw and I got their wedge salad with fried chicken. Both were good. The salad was nice and cold and crisp, which was appreciated on such a hot day. It did have too much dressing so next time I might ask for less dressing or have it on the side.
