So i have had two jettas a crown Vic and a neon and my neons timing belt snapped and the head gasket blew and per recommendation of another VW owner friend, he suggested I get the timing belt swapped out at 100K which I hired hans to do and I have ri say he did an amazing job and kept my baby on the road for another 100k and I highly recommend them. The dealership in San Rafael won't help me because there was a transmission issue and a engine issue and I'm that's cool I'd rather support mom and pop anyway being a former Lyft an DoorDash driver. 10 stars. My family has been going to Hans for almost 25 years. He has kept multiple cars (a '72 Volkswagen and a '92 Honda Accord) running past 315,000 miles! Even when I moved away to college, it was worth the trip from Santa Cruz to have Hans give my little civic the tlc it disserved. I have turned many people onto his service, and though most of us live in the city it is well worth the drive to know you are in good hands. An example: My girlfriend bought a car from a family friend of my parents. Hans had looked after it since its birth. It conked out one morning in our driveway in Santa Cruz, so we towed it to the local guy someone had recommended. That mechanic said the timing belt had broken, thus causing all the valves to bend and rendering the car unless (unless we wanted to pay 3K for a new engine). The mechanic offered to sell the car to another mechanic for us, so at least we could get $500 for the car. However, one call to Hans and the whole situation changed. "Not so fast!" he said (over the phone of course). Hans checked his records, found what he believed to be the (very minor) problem, and calmly instructed my distraught girlfriend as to what to ask the mechanic. Sure enough, he had not done any of the things Hans mentioned, and the car was fixed (by someone else!) for less than $200. One more- I was 7 at the time, and my father bravely drove my two siblings and I to Alaska. Our '74 Mercedes broke down in a town somewhere on the Alcan Highway, and the mechanic we took it to (the only one in town) had never scene a Mercedes. With the help of Hans on the phone, the Merc was brought back to life with parts from a snowmobile, and we were on our way once more, off to encounter even more trouble (though this time with unruly bears). Bottom Line: His honest opinion and attention to detail make Hans a real stand-up guy. He sets the bar in quality. read more

Let me start out by saying that Hans is the most righteous mechanic I ever had the pleasure of working with. Actually it was my son that needed his services. I just observed and couldn't believe how utterly cool this guy was to my son. Just a great human being! In short, my sons car got towed to the shop. Hans was super busy, but out of the kindness in his heart, wanted to help my son. The car was starting up but simply didn't run well. After reading the check engine light codes he put in 2 sensors and it didn't solve the problem in my son's old car. HE TOOK THEM OUT AND PUT THE OLD ONES BACK IN AND DID NOT CHARGE US!!!!! Basically I think Hans was hoping to help out my kid. But then it looked like it could be a major repair and he simply didn't have the time. He recommended we take it to our usual shop in Sebastopol and get a compression check on the engine. Bottom line, this guy has a heart of gold and lots of integrity! This is the best BMW mechanic I have had in the last 25 years. Good pricing, great repairs, and completely honest. I've been taking my BMW X5 to him from San Francisco for 3 years, that's how good he is. I recently had a problem with my X5 in SF, and had to take to a local shop where I used to go. The original estimate was for $1300, I called Hans and he said he could do it cheaper but it probably would not be worth towing to Novato, so I let the local shop do the repairs. Two days later the local shop told me I had to do more work to fix a leak on a coolant system connection which required taking the intake manifold off (another $1200). I called Hans and asked him if that was correct and he said NO! They could do the work without doing that. I told the local shop not to do that and they said ok. When the local shop gave me X5 back, they said they were able to repair the issue without the manifold work they told me I had to do. Bottom line, Hans saved me $1200 with a phone call to him. I now have AAA+ towing so if my car ever breaks down in the Bay Area, I can take it to Hans! read more

I too was a Han's customer 20 years ago. Great guy. I moved away then moved back a little time ago. Called & set up service with Daniel, Hans was on vacation. The whole thing was a nightmare. Daniel talked down to me. Tried to sell me service I didn't need & had the nerve to tell me my tires were shot to boot. I pick my car. Paid more than I though it should be & left. When I got home I noticed that 2 minor repairs that were not brought to my attention when Daniel called me & told me about the major stuff he said I needed. When I asked him about the minor repairs he said I thought you didn't want to spend any money so I didn't tell you. Funny thing my tires are a year & 1/2 old, but I did go into a tire shop for a tire quote. The guy tells me your fronts are at 65% & rears are at 45% you don't need tires. From my past experience if Han was there I thing thing would have been great. I even brough beer to Han once I was so happy with him. read more
