Finally made it to Hansa in my endless effort to try all of Cleveland's fare. We ordered two flights of beer (8 beers total) and pretzels to munch on. Our server was very friendly and our beer and pretzels were served quickly. We sat at the bar for about 30 minutes watching women's golf while drinking and eating. The beers were tasty. Some were better than others. I love that the beer menus include the IBU because it is a very good indication if I will like a beer or not. I typically can't tolerate anything above 30 IBU, except for beers that taste like Guinness and coffee stouts. I think my favorite beer was the Hansanator Dopplebock. It had a nice color and flavor. The J.U.G. Weissbier was decent also. I didn't really like the blueberry beer as it also had lemon in it that took the flavor in a sour direction that I wasn't fond of. I don't like sauerbeer in general. It was a nice visit, but overall, we prefer Great Lakes food and beer, which is right across the street. Great little brewery on the edge of Ohio City. Sampled several beers and they were great. Apparently they have recently won several awards for their beers. We also tried the beef carpaccio, which was amazing and the pretzel that had a great mustard sauce. The place has plenty of room, a large patio for people watching and an import store next door. I love checking out all the local breweries. Stop by this place many times before but they weren't open yet. Well they finally opened and we stopped in to watch The World Cup.They were short staffed but still were able to provide us with beverages and amazing potato pancakes. Bright and welcoming is the atmosphere as soon as you walk into the bar. You're greeted with a giant colorful mural of Europe and an open restaurant space. We sat at the bar and received excellent service from Ben, who was extremely friendly. He had a voice reminiscent of a radio personality. We got the pretzels to start. The crust was crispy and the inside soft and warm. Soo goood. It came with a whole grain mustard, which the seeds were pre-broken. So we didn't have any issues with the seeds in our teeth. It also came with a creamy cheese sauce, it was warm and thin. You could tell it was actually made in house, not from a can. For lunch we shared meatloaf. There were two generous slices with zucchini, red pepper, mashed potatoes and a mushroom gravy sauce. They wrapped the meatloaf in a smoked bacon! It was phenomenal! The beer was also excellent. My personal favorite was the Out Cold coffee porter. It tasted like a glass of cold brew with a kick. They have a beer infuser (for lack of a better term). They utilize it to blend different flavors into their beer to enhance/create a new flavor profile. There may have been a mention of fruity pebbles being used at one point... We were recommended this place by a friend. We were all very surprised that this place existed. Clean and welcoming diner with authentic German decor. Parking can be found all around the area. There is a German store just next door. We came for lunch on this rainy day. Half a pint of Bier and a lunch special for me and the Original Schnitzel for my boyfriend. The lunch special had a carrot soup, salad, and Hackbraten. The Scnitzel came deep fried with a side of mixed vegetables and spætzel. There was a lot of food! To the hunger and deliciousness of the food it was gone by the end of our lunch along with our drinks. The house made tiramisu topped off our meal, definitely a must have. I have been to a lot of breweries around the world (probably several hundred locations), and I'm not sure my wife and I have ever liked all the beers we tried at one, but we did here. The bartender was super friendly, the space was a nice warm escape from the cold and the sausage platter was a pretty classic comforting taste of Germany. I had never been to Cleveland before but have already recommended people take a trip to visit this place. Of course it's not a fancy competitive kitchen to enjoy a night of fine dining, but if you want that, it would clash with the journey the beers would take your senses on at this top notch brewery. read more

Their chairs are comfortable and it is homey without being extremely loud like many German beer halls. So to start, the beer. We have been doing the craft beer passport (we are up to 3 stamps). I am particular about beer especially hefeweizen. Theirs doesn't taste right. There is something that tastes artificial. It was just strange. The food was good. We got potato pancakes which were excellent and their applesauce topping was great. My husband got the meatloaf and I got schnitzel. Found Hansa while researching on Yelp. Hansa brews are more of a German/European style, right up my alley. I started with a flight ($8) consisting of German Pilsner, Oktoberfest, Black Schwartzbier and Kolsch. My wife just went with a pint of the Black Schwartzbier ($5). I liked all four of my choices, but the Oktoberfest was definitely the best. Since none of us were very hungry, we opted to split a few things. My wife and I split the sausage p!atter ($15.50). The sausage platter contained three nice sized sausages, your choice of potato and sauerkraut. Very good platter. I ordered a full pint of the Oktoberfest ($6.50) The other couple ordered the Beef Carpaccio and pretzel and cheese. Both commented the Beef Carpaccio was the best they've had! My wife and I finished off with the Napoleon Kreme ($6). One thing to note, Hansa is only about a block from West Side Market. The entire area has numerous Brew pubs and restaurants. BTW, we did not have a reservation on a Saturday night. We were told by our server we we're lucky we got in. So I would recommend you have a reservation. Nice outside patio. read more

A winner! The owner Boris was a superb host on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Terrific wienerschnitzel (with jager gravy) and pot roast. Potato pancakes with homemade apple compote was awesome. Red cabbage, spaetzel, and roast potatoes can't be beat. I'd recommend the in-house Schwartz and Oktoberfest beers, both award winners. Save room for dessert, the struedel was delicious. We just happened upon this place while we were in town for something else. Thank goodness we found it. The staff was pleasant and working their booties off. The food was stellar authentic German food. For an appetizer we got potato cakes. The sour cream and the home made applesauce complimented the cakes well. Hansa is one of my favorite places to go hangout with friends and have a drink. Unlike most bars located near the West Side Market Hansa rarely gets over crowded. Due to this it is a great place to sit and actually hear someone talk. Outside of the ability to talk Hansa has amazing staff that make you feel like family. After going to the bar twice the bartender remembered my name and knew what I liked to drink. Hansa also offers a mug club, which I would suggest joining. They usually open it up during Feburary time. About once a month a new beer comes out and the mug club members get a sample of the beer. Also you get a $1 off every drink you order. Plentiful outdoor seating. I've been twice during COVID and have been very satisfied with each visit. Happy hour beer deals are amazing, flights of four for $8 and a variety of ciders to choose from as well. This was a great low-key option on a night the Cavs had a Finals game and most places were busting at the seams. The J.U.G Hefe was fantastic and the bartenders were very personable. Came here for second time with my in laws and husband. Good selection of beers on tap, nice ambiance and decor. Outdoor seating great on nice days. Wait staff friendly but seriously UNDER staffed! No one at hostess desk yet there is a sign asking you to wait to be seated. Took forever for our dirty plates to be cleared. The food is pretty good - not anything really great. But the management needs some help if they are going to stay in business. Had lunch at Hansa today. It was my first trip there and I was definitely impressed. My coworker and I both had the lunch special... which included beef noodle soup, side salad, turkey cordon bleu, and German style potato salad for $13.50. All food was perfect and in large portions. I sampled a couple of the beers (even though I was on my lunch break from work). The beer samples were also very good. Hansa has a very homey environment and feel. You feel relaxed just sitting there. Looking at the beer kegs is interesting. I find it a little funny just watching people tend to them. The wait service is very kind and welcoming. I don't speak much German but I could still hold a short conversation, which is nice comparing my attempted conversations in other languages at other restaurants. The environment is great I would go even without the food. Speaking of the food... The food is wonderful. You want to stay at Hansa for days, just to savor the food. I had a hackbraten (a German meatloaf) and it was wonderful. It was hard to savor it, but I did try. I normally don't like to get desert but I couldn't resist. I had an apple strudel and I wolfed it down too. It looked incredible but the taste was even better than its looks. I loved Hansa. I strongly recommend going for lunch sometime if you're into German food. P.S. We piled in the car and with much merriment entered a quiet Hansa Brewery. Hey, it was Sunday and as we sat there more people arrived. Loved the server/bar tender, so German in his manner (well, he IS German). Football played on the TVs and we orders beers all around. All enjoyable, especially my weis bier! The huz ordered pretzels w/mustard and beer cheese, hey you can't go wrong, and we all ordered schnitzel except my dieting sister-in-law who ordered the risotto (yeah, I know, right?). Now, I love a good schnitzel and am pretty good at making my own after the Icelandic Volcano event of 2010 when a trip to Germany got cancelled and I was craving it, and have eaten schnitzel around Germany, Switzerland, Austria and even England, so I have a pretty good base point for rating the slice of heaven known as this German delicacy. First, they offered pork, chicken, veal or turkey schnitzel. Wow! I opted for the pork with a hunter sauce, my fave, and opted for the spaetzle but they had others to choose from for a side (I don't think pomme frites were available which is my go to). It was served promptly and was piping hot and fresh! My kinda place! My sis-in-laws Risotto took a bit longer since it is made fresh, but was worth the wait (I had more than one taste). An excellent lunch all around! Dessert we ordered a PALAČINKA - CREPE to share, OMG, effin' amazing! It was all we could do not to lick the plate!
