Recently our gas-powered water heater sprang a fatal leak. With 2020's climate change-fueled drought and wildfires fresh in mind, we decided to switch from natural gas to carbon-neutral electricity, with a heat pump water heater (HPWH). Art Hansen responded immediately, came over to assess our garage space, and gave us a clear, accurate, reasonable written proposal. He apologized that his van was in the shop, but as soon as it was fixed (two days) he and his assistant came and installed the HPWH, coordinating well with our electrician (Tom O'Connor). Art returned a couple days later to seal wall holes he made to run condensate and overflow drain pipes out over dirt (required for HPWHs). The HPWH works great and exceeds the uniform energy factor required for our city's rebate (though the city has not responded to our rebate application after two weeks). We expect the HPWH to reduce our monthly utility bill, as it's much more energy-efficient than a gas-burning water heater. As a nice side effect, it cools our garage during summer. After I got off the phone with Guy Plumbing I went out to my water heater and found A. G. Hansen sticker on it and called him to see if I could get my water heater working again. Art was great and since I got to him early he could order the parts after I gave him the model and serial number. Art was out the next day and was excellent to update the status of when he would arrive. Art replaced what he thought was the failure of the thermocouple but after a quick test found out that was not the problem. He figured out the gas valve had failed and found a replacement part the same day and had it fixed. He gave me a break on the labor since the first part he replaced did not fix the problem. On a Thursday night, our shower handle stopped working -- while the faucet was on! We had to shut off the water to the entire house to stop the bathtub from overflowing. The handle had gotten slightly harder to use over the previous couple of nights but didn't think it was noteworthy until we couldn't turn the water off. I called a plumbing service and it took them over 30 minutes to call back and say they couldn't come out. Then I called 5 of the top plumbing services in the Palo Alto area. Art was the only person who answered. He came out the same night and installed a replacement part. We were able to turn our water back on. Then he came back and performed follow up work to prevent the original issue from resurfacing over time. Super friendly, communicated clearly throughout the entire process. We had a leak in a built-in tub faucet that had suddenly had spouted into a stream. The great thing about them was that they were at my doorstep within 20 minutes. He figured out what was wrong with my faucet but needed a special ceramic stem from that manufacture. He didn't have that part on hand but was able to go to his supplier and be back to fix the faucet within an hour. He had a problem getting the handles on. It seemed the fitting-washers for this faucet had to be put on just right. He didn't charge for the extra time needed to figure this out. It seemed that the installed stems were about a millimeter too short. We were able to get it all installed but took the extra trouble to call me back the next day to let me know that he had checked with the manufacture of the faucet to see if they had a longer stem to fit this fixture and they didn't. read more

my first review on Yelp... We returned from a trip to find that upstairs toilet had 'blown a gasket' and water had overflowed tank leaking through the floor. Art came out within 2 hours of my call. He diagnosed what happened and rebuilt the shutoff valve assembly with parts from his truck, saving me the cost of a second visit. Toilet working again for $143. Cheapest plumber visit I've ever had! Art's the best. I was in panic mode when my six-year old water heater started leaking water. I did a quick google search, only to find an eHow article describing the steps to DIY-ing. I read the word "solder" and got the hell out of there. I'm not what you (or anyone else) would call a 'handyman', so I went down the Yelp list of plumbers, only to find the water heating biz is a task many don't seem too specialized in. Art came over to help with a leaking sink in a house we rent. He didn't solve the problem, left a puddle of water on our things underneath the sink and wouldn't answer my questions. He was also quite rude to me in person and to my landlord on the phone- he repeatedly interrupted me when I tried to ask basic questions about what information he needed and next steps, said to me "yes you already said that," and to my (female) landlord, "I'm going to repeat myself again so-and-so," and seemed angry with her. He seems to have a problem working with female customers if I had to guess the discrepancy in experiences posted here. Send the male of your household if you have to deal with him. When I asked him to calm down, he didn't apologize. He picked up his wrench. So I asked him to leave. The leak remains. read more

I called Art Hansen early one Sunday morning in November, 2014, when my husband was away on business, to ask if he could come to stop a wildly running toilet that could not be turned off at the wall. I was more than pleased that Art answered the phone himself and agreed to come on the spur of the moment to help. He arrived promptly, quickly assessed the situation, and called the water company to turn the water off at the street, since it was not possible to turn it off otherwise. He explained everything that he was doing that day and then the next day in great detail. His charge for the 2-part/2-day work was very reasonable, and I was happy to pay it. This is a repeat of what I wrote on another occasion. We recently again had need of Art's capable hands for a home plumbing problem. Everything I wrote before applies, so I am gratefully resubmitting this review: I wouldn't hesitate for one minute to recommend Art Hansen for a plumbing job. We are a senior couple who had put off some plumbing repairs in our 1924 Palo Alto home until we could ignore them no longer. Not knowing where to turn, I looked at the reference page of Yelp and I was convinced immediately that he was our guy. Art was everything a professional plumber should be and so much more. He's thoroughly professional, responsive, diligent and highly skilled. Understanding what some of our plumbing issues were (past tense) with our vintage fixtures, he went about remedying our long standing problems. He took pains to explain the nature of the problems and the possible remedies. Had I known how little effort it should take to flush a toilet or to stop a faucet from dripping, we would have called him long ago. I want to add that our problems were not trivial. This was not a question of a washer here or there. Parts (difficult to find) were required, and Art had to return several times to complete the job. He did all work neatly and cheerfully, actually working with my husband to find sources for the parts. We recommend him with confidence. read more
