First time playing Hansen Dam, Sunday tee time at 4:40pm. A friend and I walked while another older couple rode. Really enjoyed the course and it's conditions. We felt that the bunkers are well-placed just to make you think about your tee shots and approaches. No complaints about the fairways and rough. The greens also ran well, except for the unrepaired divots. The front 9 is easily walkable, but 10-12 has a few huge hills that killed my legs. Next time I play that late, I might only play the front 9. We ended up getting through 14 holes with enough daylight and played 15 and 16 near-dark. Barely had to wait at all, but the group behind was breathing down our neck a little. read more

Pretty low quality golf course. Carts are in really poor condition and the Bluetooth didn't even work on mine. Tee boxes look like soccer fields and so do the fairways. Putting green is cement on some holes and close to the dam it seems like they're actually well kept. Overall wouldn't bring anyone you like here. Might as well go to a driving range or save up and play a real golf course. read more

Not worth the time!!!! Flopping of the front 9 and back 9 has completely messed up the flow of what used to be a mediocre municipal course. The majority of the people employed for the starter position have the attitude that you are inconveniencing them when you try to check in and pay. Your reservation card and drivers license is sometimes not enough to prove you are a resident so I definitely recommend bringing 5 forms of identification..... This post can go on for days so I will stop while I am ahead. If you must play an LA Municipal course, I highly recommend visiting Balboa / Encino. This course is no joke. After calling various L.A. County golf courses (except east of the 110) around 5 pm on a Friday afternoon for a Saturday morning-- after 8 am, before 10 am-- tee time and getting laughed at by a couple of people who answered the phone, while on my computer doing double duty trying to make online reservations only to get a 'none available' message, I finally found a 7:18 tee time at Hansen Dam. I quickly Yelped it and saw that it had at least 3 stars and so I hit 'confirm'. I failed to read that the fairways were looooong! I usually have enough nerves to hit from the white tees, but not at HD; I had to hit from the gold tees. Even from the gold tees, the distances were mostly 300+ yards; if not, they sure felt like it. The front nine terrain included valleys and sharp doglegs, but the back 9 were fairly straightforward and flat-- but still long. The fairways and the greens were the best I've seen in a municipal course and other public courses. They were in better shape than Brookside and Malibu GC. Since my friend and I had an early tee time, it wasn't too crowded. The pace of play was kind of slow and got even slower by the time we finished. We were ok because the group behind us was slow; but I noticed that a couple of holes had a wait. Fun and challenging course. Or, challenging and fun course. Depends on your game, I guess. Regardless, great bargain. Bonus that the staff and other golfers were good-natured and very friendly. read more

This review is strictly to about the cart barn and range employees, 2 of them. They are both wildly rude. I know we are going through tough times right now and people are on edge, but come on. Last night I called the pro shop and asked if the driving range was open and until what time. I was told 9pm. I showed up at 7:50 and this mulleted old hick said, "Nope, we are closed!" There were 4 or 5 people hitting on the range at the time. I said I just drove from Pasadena 25 minutes bc I was told it was open until nine. "they might be open until 9 (the pro shop) but I'm closing." So I said, "you aren't going to let me hit a medium bucket and get out of here in 20 minutes?" He grumbled something and slammed a door in my face. I went to the ball machine were I could see him in the back and asked what he said under his breath. "grab a medium bucket and then I'm shutting the door/garage to range balls". Thanks fella, you were a real treat. I called the pro shop after and said they might want to coordinate with that guy if they are going to be answering the phone and giving hours of operations. Now today, I played, my buddy advised me that I couldn't take the cart into the parking lot so I unloaded my stuff and as I was walking back to the cart I thought of the Louie CK bit about just leaving his rental car at the terminal. "they are going to want it back, they are just going to go get it." Not cool, I know, and the reservation was under a friends name that plays there a lot so I got in the cart and went looking for the cart return. I stopped in front of the cart barn door to ask where the cart return is. The guy from last night's haggard wife snapped, "you're not thinking of parking that right there, are you?" I said, "No, I'm looking for the cart return." She couldn't have been nastier as she said, "you mean those yellow lines and the sign that says cart return right in front of you?" WTF? I told her she was a real treat and as I turned to leave I heard her say something to the affect of "some people are so stupid." Now if the manager of this course reads this you might want to think about talking to these two, either at the course in the office or in their trailer. Don't worry about replying to me because I wouldn't golf there again if it was free for life. Pro shop was well run under these conditions and everyone else was polite. Course was great! read more

I haven't played the course yet, so this review is for the Driving Range only. This driving range is actually better than most of the LA Muni driving ranges I've been to and is pretty well kept and green! The only thing that I don't necessarily like is that you're hitting towards a hillsides. If you're used to getting distance at other ranges, you probably won't get that distance here. The mats are actually in pretty good condition and not beat up, and I was surprised to see that the balls were also in newer condition. It does get busy here, and in the afternoons, the sun can get pretty harsh, so everyone tries to get the covered stalls. The evenings is when the mosquitos and bugs come out in full effect, probably because of the damn. I'm deducting one star because one time when I called in and asked about what the largest bucket was, the guy said it was $10 for 125. After buying the large bucket, a kid next to me had a much larger bucket, and he told me there's a jumbo bucket for $16. I would have gotten that one if I had known about it! read more

I used to play here a lot, before they changed the course layout. I finally got out and played the new layout this past saturday. Surprisingly, got out at about 2:30pm and finished around 7 even though it felt like our group was playing really slow. Usually it takes at least 5.5 hours to finish a round here. It was $32 per person with a cart for a 4 some. Not bad. I do prefer the old layout. I know they wanted the 18th to end in front of the clubhouse and maybe i'm just used to it but the older layout felt smoother and just flowed better. With the new layout, you don't play a par 3 hole until the 7th. I gotta minus a star for their clubhouse / snack bar. There was noone inside and the kitchen looked closed. 2 buddies went to get a hot dog at the turn but we had to wait for a lady to come from outside and grab the hotdogs from the kitchen where all the lights were off. Fairways/greens were average. The fairways are super wide so if you slice or hook, you can probably find your ball and if you're lucky, might even have a shot to the green. Par 5s are reachable, even for some amatuers. All in all, a decent city course. Really not bad especially if it's not too crowded. read more

Felt like doing a review considering the new course layout (back nine, front nine flip) First off, not a fan of the new layout. The old #1 was a much better starting hole and really set a nice tone for the course. Now, because of the short #1 & #2 the round is always getting off to a late start due to the backup at #2 due to people trying to drive the green. It just doesn't set up the round as well as before. I also don't find the greens to be in the best shape. Having played all the local courses I'd rate the Hansen greens at below average. They just don't seem to roll true. Still a fun course, very open, forgiving and a solid value. read more

If I could give this course 0 stars I probably would. From the beginning the service was horrible. It's dirty and unprofessional. On hole nine we attempted to contact the kitchen to order our lunch so that we can continue playing in a timely fashion. After five attempts of calling the course itself with no answer (after attempting to call the kitchen), we decided that we would just not eat and continue playing rather than holding everyone up.. This is one of the better (I use that term loosely) L.A. Municipal Courses, not so much for what shape it is in, but for the overall design of the course. The course is in decent shape and the greens were well kept considering how much play they get on a daily basis. Towards the end of the day, the greens got pretty bumpy, but what do you expect. The course has more character than the typical L.A. Muni Park-like layout. The greens have some severe slopes and tricky breaks. You have to be aware of where the dam is on this course, because everything breaks away from the dam. The par 3s on the back nine play very tough into the prevailing winds. 18 is actually a great finishing hole with a very tough green. The clubhouse is pretty run down and the bathrooms really suck. The golf shop, however, was well stocked and very up to date with the latest equipment. The Golf carts were a total piece of junk, and barely made it up the hill on #10. Don't come out here expecting to Riviera style golf, but it is a lot better than what I expected. BTW....Pacoima??? who goes to Pacoima to play golf. Note: Don't hit Driver on #10 unless you can carry the ball 300 yards. Layup to the 150 and take your chances from the flats. Score: 72 Handicap: 2 read more

I give it five stars for the value. two bucks per hole-- that are well kept. Its a public course people! . . .Went here on a Thursday at twilight and really enjoyed the golf for 10 holes though i could have played longer. The attendant was really nice and got me on quickly when i walked up. I played with a bunch of locals who were really funny and helped me with the nuances of the course. totally worth playing here for challenges to your entire golf game. . . tee boxes, greens, fairways were wide and really well kept. Course has a good variety of features on each hole, with good overall distance and elevation changes, blind approaches, long second shots, elevated tee boxes, elevated greens, small ravines, wind, etc. I am planning to come often. Did not see the driving range or clubhouse. Stayed out of the sand all day so do not have comment on that. read more

Course is actually fun and challenging but the starter needs to be fired. Of course he won't because he's a city employee but he's totally unprofessional and power trips over his little domain he gets to control. There was a line of us waiting for half an hour while he was just tinkering around in his little office. Then he comes out at 6:15 saying he will be back in 5 minutes, while there are people who have 6:12 tee times. No apologies, no explanation, nothing. Gee I wonder why it's slow here. Played 18 in exactly 4 hours This morning, a Sunday. Greens were in great shape, fairways pretty good. Layout is weird, due to dam hillsides being involved in at least three holes, but that makes it a unique course, for a muni. The hills and elevated tees make it more interesting than Balboa/Encino. This place is awesome, yeah they changed it around, no big deal. I haven't played here in years, the added cart paths and fixed this place up. They have a nicely stocked pro shop, lots of items and fair prices, dining area is pretty big, needs some updating, but it works. The snack shop gets your food out fast. We were booked for 9 holes but got rung up for 18. Didn't realize it until we were out on the links, but we thought "no big deal, we'll just tell them once we finsih 9" So we tell them at the Starter desk. But the young man tells us that he has to ask the manager on duty (Friday 10am August 18,2017) So he calls him on the overhead speaker. We wait for a few minutes and then comes over a young man probably in his late 30's early 40's and he's got tons of attitude. We try to explain what happened but he won't hear it. He just hears that we want a refund, so he tells us "It's city course policy. No refunds!" We try to talk some more and he just says "City policy. No refunds!" So we're bummed because that's 30 bucks down the drain which we didn't plan on spending but this guy won't even let us explain the situation. But to really put salt in the wound, the manager turns to the kid behind the desk and says "You made me hit a bad tee shot for this?" and then jumps in a golf cart with his buddies to go play a round. I just now have one question "Is it City Policy for a Manager to play golf on his shift?" Are we the tax payers paying for manager to play golf? Did the manager pay for that round of golf? I mean if it's a city course, then all city rules apply correct? Do other city workers get to play golf when they are working? read more

they just flipped the hole layout and I don't like it one bit. the opening hole was a nice, welcoming starting hole, now it's a modest par 4 with an extreme uphill green, one of the most difficult on the course. I think they made a big mistake here. I don't like the way the back 9 closes out now. other than that, it's a good course that's usually in decent shape and fun to play for the can't break 100 crowd. read more

Had a 7:36 tee time on a Saturday morning. The course was not crowded at all. A little confused where to check in due to lack of a clubhouse. The fairways were ok but the greens were excellent. Very fast and smooth. Not really the tightest course, so the occasional banana slice was not punished too badly. Finished in just over 4 hours. read more

Since other people I've asked that this was a decent course to play, I thought I'd give it a try. I played there with my golf buddy last Tuesday around 11AM. Front 9 was pretty easy (first 2 holes were more like long par 3's). The back 9 however, the heat (of 95degrees) got into both of us. My partner were half heat stricken, and due to men's tornament in the front of us, we had to wait on every hole in the back 9. The back 9 was excruciating. The starter even told us at the beginning of our round, there won't be a back up due to tornament, boy, was he wrong! My advice: Don't play there when there's tornament in front of you & don't play there when the temperature hits over 80 degrees! The greens & the practice area were awesome. But, I would not go back there to play again. read more

Hansen Dam is a great city owned course. Wide welcoming fairways. Soft accepting greens that are quicker then most I play. Nice elevation changes. The best part of Hansen is the staff and people who play here. All extremely friendly and helpful. Just good old fashion service. The only negative is at times the pace of play can move at a snails pace it has taken 5+ hours on a typical Saturday. read more

Played this course on a Sunday. 12:12 tee time. By the time we finished the 2nd hole, it was an hour and a half later! Finished 9 holes by 4:00 pm. Dark before we could finish 16. Never again. read more
