I went with my BFF and her boyfriend after hearing all the hype, and let's just say, the hype is real (and very filling). The Food: Why it Beats a Traditional Steakhouse We went with the Classic Dinner, and the quality was top-tier. The Favorites: The Bulgogi and Hanger Steak were flavored to perfection. The Short Ribs were a total dream, and the Gyoza and Fried Shrimp were the perfect crispy distraction while we waited for the grill to heat up. The Value: Think about it--at a fancy steakhouse, you'd pay $50+ for one steak and maybe a side. Here, for a similar price, you get an unlimited parade of high-quality meats, seafood, and appetizers. Our 2nd visit in the last 12 months. 1st visit was ok, 2nd visit knocked it out of the park. Great ratings and reviews, and hungry for some good Korean food, provoked us to come back. Our server, Sophia, was exemplary in service, knowledge and customer service. We didn't catch the managers name but, she stopped by the tables numerous times on our visit. Everything about this restaurant was genuinely fantastic. The restaurant itself was very clean, very decorative and well-kept. Our food didn't take long to show to our table at all, and all of the meat was very fresh and absolutely delicious. The beef bulgogi was my favorite by far. It was fantastic and juicy, the scallops were so fresh tasting and satisfying, along with everything else. It was a great time for all of us getting to cook our own food on the grill. Our waiter, Brian, just made the experience all the better. When he first greeted us, after learning I was new he took the time to explain their items and how things work and he was clear and kind. Pretty good AYCE KBBQ. Two menus to choose from - the classic is the right choice. The premium has sea bass and filet which aren't really good on the grill IMO. The appetizers are pretty good; would recommend the fried shrimp, tuna carpaccio, and gyoza. Pass on the kimbap. For meat, the kalbi, beef bulgogi, and hanger steak are good. Great service from the start! My family of 10 came in on a Tuesday night and accommodated our party size immediately. Our server Sammy was great as soon as we got seated with asking and getting us anything we needed or for a "just in case" situation, she was so friendly and funny as well! The manager Jaime came over to let us know we can always ask for anything if needed or any complaints or concerns. She gave us soju on the house and a soju as a gift! After several recommendations to come here we finally tried Hanwoo. Our party of 4 all ordered the classic meals. The food had very good taste to it. We didn't like the small area of heat where you cook the meats. When you have 4 people trying to cook it's too small. We also don't like that we had to cook our own food. Port Orange finally has a KBBQ at Hanwoo in the old Mellow Mushroom on Taylor Road. They're still in a bit of a soft opening phase but let me tell you that did not reflect in the service which was spot on. The only tell is that they were out of some items - corn dog, chicken wings, marinated roast beef, bean sprouts. Hopefully they'll work out sourcing issues soon. I eat a lot of KBBQ down in Orlando and this is a great entry level place if you've never tried it before. The seasoning is toned down so nothings overly spicy or strongly flavored. There are plenty of "recognizable" meat options and things like butter garlic shrimp and chicken teriyaki for less adventurous eaters. I guess my point is it's good, but it's safe good. I'll give them huge props for absolutely tender and flavorful lamb and gator - two meats I've never seen at a KBBQ before. But the kimchi and gochujang were mild. Chopsticks and dipping sauces are upon request. While the banchan are unlimited they come in tiny single-serve dishes which says to me they're afraid of waste because people might not like them (the table behind us was adamantly against even trying kimchi). The place underwent an amazing transformation and it's clean, modern, and trendy/romantic without feeling pretentious or stuffy. Despite a hot grill at your table the temperature was very comfortable. Also gotta love a front desk that's a giant bull sculpture. I do hope they'll embrace the K of KBBQ a bit more as time goes on but I'll definitely be back because it was all quality ingredients and great staff. We had a great experience tonight at Hanwoo. It was a lovely first Korean Barbecue experience. The ambience is comfortable for either couples or large groups. They have a fantastic selection of different sides, appetizers and proteins, and everything we tried was very tasty. In case you don't know, Korean Barbecue is all-you-can eat (but there is not taking home leftovers). You sit at a booth with a wire-topped grill in the center of the table underneath a pergola. After telling the server which of the meal options you'd like (we did the Signature dinner) you can begin choosing from the options available with your package. Your proteins and veggies come uncooked (proteins are prepared with marinades/seasonings) and you butter them up and cook them on the wire grill while munching on your chosen appetizers or sides. What makes this experience so cool is that you dictate what you're eating and when. We started with all the appetizers this time, but next time we'll choose a few appetizers and a few proteins so we can mix it up! The food comes out very quickly because the proteins are raw, so keep that in mind. Excelsior, you followers of the most *down* reviewer around, Peter Periwinkle! Here's ya main boo comin' at ya with a review of Hanwoo, doo doo doo! Listen, here's the rub, chums. This place is great. I have zero complaints about the food or service. Both were excellent. The only real catch here is that you're going to be shelling out at least 40 or so bucks a person, and probably more with drinks etc. For that, you get as much buh-buh-beef (etc.) as you can cram in your yawning pie hole voids. So too do you get very friendly/helpful service and some lovely ambience (just be warned, it's super cheesy. Your favorite review Peter P. loves a little schmaltz, though). All things considered, pretty durn good for the price. Here's my one complaint. The menu is really geared JUST towards in-table bbq. If you wanted to have, say, some bibimbap or some bulgogi cooked in the kitchen and brought out to you as a single entree, you're out of luck. Most KBBQ places have at least an option to order off a kitchen menu like that -- and even sometimes a few tables with no grills whatsoever. I think at least a few kitchen-entree menu options here would go a long way (listen, sometimes Mr. Periwinkle is too tired to grill his own grub after a long day at his main job beautifying the gardens of little old ladies across the world).
