Came here with my Yelp friend. It had been on my list forever, and I was so happy to finally try it. It's tucked away in the corner of a strip mall, and I've probably passed it a gazillion times and never even noticed it was there. My friend had called the day before to see if there was anything gluten-free on the menu. They were so helpful when we showed up. They had remembered her call and could tell her exactly what was gluten free. This is a very casual order at the counter kind of place. The dining room is simple, but that's okay because the focus is on the yummy food. They have single plates and double plates on the menu. I got a plate that had kalbi and kalua pork. It was served with white rice, macaroni salad, and kimchi. It was amazing! The pork tasted Smoky and delicious, the kalbi beef had just the right amount of sweetness to it. The macaroni salad was also perfect. I got quite a bit of food for my money. I was able to make it into two meals because there was no way I was going to finish it in one sitting. I really like Hawaiian food, and this one is so much better than some of the chain restaurants. It's slightly more in price, but it's 100% worth it. We sat and talked for a couple hours at least. Never judge a book by its cover. That's the theme for my work trip in Phoenix. Thought I knew something about Arizona. Turns out I didn't know anything. Well. One night on my work trip I was crazing poke. "Good luck with that" I thought. Turns out. There's a few good spots for poke in the Phoenix area! Hapa Food was my choice though as they seemed to have the right vibe. And right vibe they did have. Small shop with nice display cases. Food was very fairly priced! Nice. And the gal working the register was so nice. Great so far! But how was the poke? It was awesome. Vegas has tons of poke options. Hapa? They stand with some of the better one. They used a spicy mayo mix which was tasty. The kimchi was an awesome edition and reminded me of when I was a kid and mom would do the same thing. And the rice had the perfect texture and they used furikake. The final touch that made me say "yup, they know what's good." If Vegas is the 9th island then maybe Arizona is the 10th. The portion of rice was just right, and there was a slight sweetness coming from either the chicken or the rice that added an interesting twist to the flavor. The shrimp were impressively jumbo-sized--definitely bigger than what you normally get--and while they were just a tad undercooked for my taste, the flavor was still spot on. The garlic chicken was delicious and well-seasoned, and everything came together for a satisfying meal. Not a huge deal I will just double check my bag next time. I also felt like the ube was quite runny, where it should have been a custard texture. Guess that's irrelevant since I ate them all anyways.
