We love Hapa Izakaya! Every single thing on their menu has been delicious fresh and healthy from the sashimi salad to the tatakis, sake roasted chicken (despite it being unique for some), to the edamame, everything has been high in quality as Japanese food in Vancouver often is. Hapa Izakaya also has the best heated patio, no side coverings needed as they are in the center of the covered walkway and their heaters keep everyone warm even if you are seated in the seats closest to the entrance on a rainy day which makes Hapa Izakaya one of our favorite dog friendly spots to sit and enjoy a happy hour item, or few, or a full dinner after visiting Barking Babies around the corner. This is also one of the rare places to have a great glass of plum wine on ice if you are looking to try a glass. Their red wine on the happy hour menu is perfect too! WHEN: Mon @6:30pm It was conference week and some friends (old and new) were walking around looking for a place to eat when we stumbled upon this lovely spot. As much as we wanted to sit outside, just the one indoor was available. Since it was Monday, they have $2 CAD off All Hapa Sushi Rolls! Here's what my 4 friends and I shared: CHIPOTLE BEEF CURRY ISHI-YAKI - $19 CAD Rice, AAA beef, chipotle curry, lettuce, tomato, mozzarella cheese, fried egg; served in a hot stone bowl. It was mixed up at our table and the moist and favorable fried rice was really good. I love my rice meals saucy! I'm glad we chose the beef. HAPA ROLL - $20 CAD Torched aburi sockeye salmon, spicy mayo, avocado, cucumber, pickled daikon, asparagus. Oh yeah this was so good. Saucy though in and through out, no complaints! This roll was jam packed with all my favorite things of a sushi roll! The price is so good too! EBI MAYO - $16 CAD Tempura prawns, tobanjan mayo sauce. This can be a skip even though I enjoyed it. It's just fried tempura shrimp in sauce. Can't go wrong with that as an appetizer. KARAAGE - $20 CAD Deep fried boneless chicken, soy ginger sauce. I did not expect the pieces of fried chicken to be so huge! And it was all tasty and juicy! There was like 5-6 large pieces! TOFU CHOCOLATE MOUSSE - $10 CAD Tofu, dark chocolate, maple syrup, served with ice cream. I can't recommend this enough. From those ingredients I wouldn't have believed it to be so guilt free! So right, creamy, and not too sweet. The restaurant is really cute and stylish, but the food is just average. This was probably my least favorite meal in Vancouver. We came here on a Monday evening and there was no wait. I wanted to try different items, so we ordered a number of things. We ordered beef tataki, ebi mayo, soy honey garlic wings, stone pot rice bowl, mentaiko poutine, and the Hapa Roll. I didn't care for any of them. If I had to choose, my favorite was probably the wings, but they were just okay. For drinks, we got a bottle of hot sake. The food came out quick, which was a plus. A great Japanese tapas spot in Yaletown! I recently went on a trip to Vancouver with my team for the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat festival and since we had a big group, it was tough trying to find places in the area to accommodate 20+ of us. Luckily when I inquired about reservations for a big group at Hapa Izakaya, Justin and his team were able to make it work. However, I do would like to add that we did reserve on a Thursday night. For my table, we ordered a lot of tapas and they were all so good! Some of my honorable mentions include soy honey garlic wings, mentaiko poutine, and the takoyaki. Though I had many soy garlic wings in my life, I felt like this one took the cake for me since it was so crispy and full of flavor yet the batter was so thin, which I prefer. The mentaiko poutine was creamy and had so much mentaiko on it. The takoyaki was huge and crispy, you really cannot go wrong with takoyaki (also it was a happy hour deal item since we came on a Thursday). I also ordered their Hello Kitty cocktail (definitely got it because of the name) and it was so good! It was a vodka base mixed with strawberry puree, Calpico and soda. For my own entree, I ordered the Kinoko Ishi-Yaki which was a hot stone bowl rice dish with a variety of mushrooms. It was a very savory and umami dish however I wished I saw more variety in the enoki mushrooms since I only was able to spot a few enoki mushrooms. One line review: Great heated patio, terrific service, okay food. Here on the end of the covid emergency, we still need to be careful and are always thankful for a nice, openair patio. Hapa Izakaya has a beautiful, well-heated one. My wife and I split the green beans, the Ebi Mayo, and a couple of their stone pot rice bowl meals. She also had a beer, which she said was good. The food was beautiful but otherwise average. Particularly disappointing: The rice in the stone bowls never developed that crispy 'crust' that is point of the stone bowl! The hostess and our server were excellent and gave us first-class service. We were treated very well. Parking in Yaletown is often at meters and can be pricey. It pays to hunt a bit, as prices vary from free to $6/hour. We found parking about two blocks away for $3/hour. Bottom line: A bit pricey for the quality of food, but we did enjoy the patio and our time here. We would consider coming back. read more

The last standing location downtown!! Good food, good music and good vibes, and the servers are super sweet. The Hello Kitty cocktail is the best! Just giving them 4 stars instead of 5 because sometimes the lettuce the give you for the pork belly lettuce wraps (delicious) is .. unwrapable (see pics) but if that doesn't bother you or you won't order that, I still recommend it. It's so cute and cozy. It won't stop me from going back, or ordering this again, but have to be honest that it's not quite "perfect" sometimes. They also have a great late night happy hour after 9. If you love millennial mix tapes like me the music is a whole viiiiibe. Takes me longer to eat here because I'm too busy singing along with their awesome 2010's playlists. I came here with three other friends after watching a movie at the VIFF theatre, none of us had been here before, we picked the restaurant based on location and reviews. I am a bit disappointed because I expected tastier food with more authentic Japanese taste. Even though I have been going out with friends, I am still very careful with coronavirus precautions as I have to visit nursing home regularly. The spacing between tables in the restaurant was acceptable and the staff were all wearing masks. The staff were all pleasant and friendly. We ordered dishes a few at a time. First we had the Ebi Avocado Salad. I am not a fan of salads, but this one tasted good, the greens were fresh and the prawns tangy, I just wish the dish is larger. Then came the Kalbi, I didn't take a photo of it, it was disappointing as the beef was very dry. After that we ordered the Ahi Tuna, Agedashi Tofu, and the Spicy Pork Ishi-Yaki. They were all ok but nothing stands out. One of us had a coffee and the total bill split evenly was $34.55 each. All in all, I think it was just an average experience. read more

I had no idea that Hapa Izakaya is in Yaletown. I used to go to Hapa Izakaya all the time. I was upset when I heard their Robson, Kitsilano, Waterfront and Calgary locations all closed down within the same month. I thought they were gone gone. To my surprise, there was one location that still exist. B took me here for dinner after work. It has been so long that I went to Hapa and I feel like the menu was so familiar and new at the same time. The decor and everything looked the same as how the other Hapa locations looked like when they were still around. We got a sake chicken to share. B got the Chipotle beef curry Ishiyaki and I got the Unagi Ishiyaki. Japanese is one of my favorite cuisines. All three dishes came at the same time. The sake chicken was cooked to perfection. The flavor was somewhat light. It was not bad. I guess sake flavor evaporate when it is cooked. I had a tiny spoon of B's Chipotle beef curry Ishiyaki. It was spicy and was very flavorful. It had lot of sauce. B said it was very satisfying. My Unagi Ishiyaki was superb delicious. They were generous on the unagi. When mixed in all together with the Japanese pickle, it changes the dynamic and created a very interesting flavor. The flavor was sweet and vinegary at the same time. I didn't realize that tea is not free here like most Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. They charged $1.50 per cup. We each got one. The tea was ok. Refill is unlimited on the tea. Hapa Izakaya is not on Opentable. We were lucky to show up and have a table available with no wait. They are not as busy as they used to be. I guess competition has gotten fierce in Vancouver with many new restaurants opening up. I will be back that is for sure. read more

During my most recent visit, I had ordered the Hapa Chicken Salad, Ebi Mayo, Aburi Saba, Spicy Tuna Roll, Beef Tataki, and Hello Kitty to drink. If you haven't tried it yet you've got to try their Hapa Chicken Salad. It's a salty, sweet, umami mix of flavours that always leaves me wanting more. The salad is one of the big reasons that bring me back to Hapa time and again. The Ebi Mayo and Aburi Saba were both delicious (as always). The shrimp were fried nicely, which gave it a perfect crispy texture on the outside, and a nice snap from the shrimp on the inside. The saba was fresh and lightly charred on top. The heat really brings out the oily flavours of the fish, which makes it a perfect combo with the tangy and spicy mustard it's served with. It was my first time ordering the spicy tuna roll and was a little disappointed. Hence the 4-star rating this time. The spicy tuna roll falls a bit short compared to the other dishes. It was lacking just a bit of depth to the flavour, and missing just a bit of crunch. read more

We ordered beer and sake to share with the table too which was so much fun! I was in love with every dish that we tried! My favorite was the grilled calamari! It was so tender and soft. Hapa Izakaya is great for group gatherings but you need to make sure everyone arrives on time to keep your table. I rarely ever eat red meat because I'm just not a fan of it but for some reason I've been having these crazy cravings for it lately (probably because I'm low on iron) so we decided to get an order of Beef Tataki. We weren't huge fans of this dish because we felt that the sirachi-like hot sauce on top of the beef slices over took the whole plate. We didn't really taste much of the beef through the sauce :( Grayson rarely ever gets raw oysters because I don't like them so he took the opportunity to get some today. He thought that they weren't bad but he's had better. He asked me a couple of times if I wanted the other one but I said no because he also mentioned that there was a really ocean-y aftertaste. Wow. This place transports you to an Izakaya experience in Japan, and that's not surprising considering their history and a staff who have an authentic approach to the experience. Sad that multiple Hapa locations have closed down in recent years - it used to be a favourite for group gatherings and I remember celebrating my 17th at the Kits location. Happy hour is still great and so are my favourite dishes, the aburi saba sashimi and kinoko meshi! I wish the portions were bigger though. The aburi saba is seared in front of you so it's quite a spectacular sight. Kinoko meshi is mushroom rice and they also mix that up for you, so forget about the gram for that one! We also had the mentaiko udon - pretty average. Would also recommend the tuna and avocado dip (they used to allow me to substitute for salmon but not sure if this is still the case) and paper bag prawns - they seemed to be pretty popular when I went last week. read more

Tried their DOV a little while back but overall, the food was tasty and for a good price too! We were given the choice between a few appies and main dishes meaning we chose their beef tataki (which was a little bit too thickly sliced), miso baked sable fish was a small portion but buttery and finally the rice dishes were both filling and tasty (pork stone bowl didn't crisp up/a little too liquidy) and the salmon rice bowl had a bit too much rice. This tiny location is located in strips of businesses in Yaletown. Quite cramped, the location is extremely narrow but the restaurant extended deep. I would advise against parties larger than 4. The lighting is very dim inside, and outside, where we were seated, is also cramped. The food portions are pretty small and at the end of the night I wasn't satiated, but it was good enough. Prices are also pretty high but you're paying for the convenience if you have/had other plans in Yaletown before/after. No issues with service, however they seem to be very rushed. What an awesome restaurant! It's so lively without being "loud". Vibes were awesome, staff was great; I really appreciate having photos of each dishe on the menu. My favourite thing we had was Jalapeño Hamachi Carpaccio (make sure to add a squirt of lemon 10/10) and I really enjoyed the Beef Tataki.. the Goma-ae was lacking that strong thick peanut butter sauce; which personally love peanut butter but if you don't want it as strong, then you'll enjoy. If you're not a heavy drinker, like me, and you enjoy something light and fruity, I recommend the spiked pear lemonade. Gave this place a 2nd chance. Duck & beets - duck was dry and quite bland. Beets were okay. Served with some greens and sunflower seeds. Ebi avocado salad - special mention to the avocado. Prawns were mostly fresh. Salad is average. Ebi mayo - probably my favourite dish. Nice battered prawns, with a nice kick to the spicy mayo. Salmon sashimi - very fresh pieces. Another special mention. Portion size is quite tiny though. Dry ribs - nice and crunchy on the outside. Again, super tiny portion though. Served with lemon and a bowl of something. Potato wedges - covered with cheese, and mixed with green onions and Brussels sprouts. It tastes exactly like what it sounds like. Smoked oysters - wrapped in ham and served on a pile of mayo. Quite good, except they're the size of your thumb. Dish comes with a mouthful of salad. Sukiyaki - beef and mushrooms in a bowl. Broth was a bit salty. Beef was average. Surf & turf - essentially 4 shrimp dumplings (dim sum) with the prawn tails sticking out, and served with dark vinegar. Ishiyaki (rice in a stone bowl) - go for the spicy pork one. Maybe I'm just biased towards spicy mayonnaise. The chipotle beef one tasted like something I could get in a food court. Sure the atmosphere is nice here, but my biggest complaint is the lack of value. The food is severely overpriced, for what I perceive as mediocre quality. Even before drinks, it is easy to blow $40 a person here and still leave hungry. Lastly, this location does not have any drink specials. Something to keep in mind. For this, I recommend the Kitsilano location instead. read more

The food was well packaged, tastes great just how I remember it. I ordered their Negitoro, Hapa Roll, chicken kaarage, tuna tataki, ebi mayo, avocado roll and beef curry ishi yaki bowl. We came here accidentally we asked our concierge to make us a reservation at a different Japanese place but we decided to make the best out of the mistake a give this place a try. The service was sketchy at best it took forever to get someone to fill our water and we also had to flag someone down to take our order. It was a lot of small plates and a few maki options which we weren't big fans of having to do it tapas style. She couldn't give us a lot of direction regarding portions so we ended up with more food than we could eat and some duplicates we didn't order.
