We have been going the Pageant of the Masters for 8 years now and we used to eat here everytime we came out. Unfortunately the last two times we've eaten there it's been awful. The chef must have accidentally gotten Wasabi on his hands because every single roll we ordered tasted like pure Wasabi. When we said something the waiter did apologize but didn't give us any discount or free rolls. So we decided to give one more try next year, and the same thing. Wasabi smudges on all the rolls. It was horrible. The fish honestly didn't taste very fresh either, at least from the smalls amounts I could taste. It's too bad, such a cute little place. read more

This used to be my absolute favorite sushi place back in the day. I would call in my order and drive down from high school at lunch to pick it up. The chef who used to worked there knew me by name because I was there so often, and he would actually call me "Princess Courtney." He was fabulous and his caterpillar rolls were delicious. Unfortunately, Hapi Sushi has gone downhill just a bit since he left (I think another sushi place snagged him away). It is still great, usually not too crowded, and in a good area that is a little off the main strip in Laguna Beach. I would have given it a 4.5 in the past, but I really miss the old chef, so I have to lower that a bit. However, I think for someone who had never met him, the restaurant would still be a 4. I would absolutely recommend the California Rolls (somehow I have never had a California Roll live up to these ones) and the Caterpillar Rolls (if you like eel, which is my favorite)! read more

My uncle took me here after a day of tide pool walking and art gallery gawking. You might miss this place if you didn't know it was there...(I realize I say that a lot in reviews but I get lost (a lot!) so I'm just trying to help out!) It's a nice little hole in the wall with a funny chef at the bar. I particularly enjoyed the Japanese burrito and the 49 Special. The fish was fresh and combinations unique - though some sounded very sauce heavy. The soybean wrapper on the burrito was a nice change. The mint and lemon in the 49 made the roll surprisingly light and fresh without slapping me in the mouth, though I could have done with less (or no?) spicy mayo something on it. The hot house sake was nice, I would prefer it a little drier but it hit the spot. Will definitely go again when I'm in Laguna! read more

Went there for my first time a few weeks ago. It can be hard to find, since the place is TINY and there are tons of other sushi places in Laguna. The sushi chef was very friendly and personable with a thick japanese accent. He offered to make us some of his speciality roles (fried tuna roll) and salmon skin salad that were not listed on the menu. The rolls were moderately priced, and ALOT better than Maki Maki. My fave was the Japanese Burrito roll. The menu consists of only sushi, sashimi, and rolls. It seems like a local hangout, and I will definetely come here again on my next visit to Laguna. read more

I don't even want you to know about it. I've had only the most magical experiences here in the... oh god... 20 years? my family has been eating here. We started with California rolls for ten years, because we thought California rolls and gyoza were the end and beginning of sushi. It wasn't until I brought my first love here that I tried special rolls and seaweed salads and smelt eggs and sashimi and all of it. The more we came the more our favorite chefs warmed to us, and would make us their custom creations. Actual masterpieces, often based on things they knew we liked. I wouldn't say the service has ever been instantly affable in the way most people are expecting. We built a rapport over time (and now that I am no longer a local, I have to rebuild it each time I share the place). It's a tiny shop, a "hole in the wall," with the actual feel of being in Japan. I took my second love here on a perfect day for an afternoon meal. We had the place to ourselves, which began awkwardly but then he struck up a conversation in Japanese with the chef (mercifully translating for me) which charmed him. That's when, like years before, the extra special rolls and funny stories came in spades. I think if you want explicitly California rolls, a 19 year old girl to pretend she likes you and to make your movie on time, this is the kind of place that will drive you absolutely insane. After looking up sushi places in Laguna for a friend a few months ago, I discovered Hapi, but was not able to try it until this past weekend. We showed up around 8pm, and sat at the bar. The place was pretty empty for a Sat. night. It's a little hole in the wall that you would probably pass by if you didn't know it was there. The owner/chef was very friendly and funny. The joke above was made after he had been talking about the Korean speed skater on the television, and I took a look (and no I did not neglect my date). We tried edamame (not enough salt), miso (good, but unusual since it had a lot of noodles in it), reverse rainbow roll (really good), Philly roll (really good), and a Japanese Burrito (also good but spicy! ~ rooster sauce). All around the fish tasted fresh, and was some of the better that I have had in Laguna. The service was good as well, and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed, however, that could have been due to the late hour and lack of patrons. The only downside was that the prices were LITTLE on the expensive side of reasonable (~$70 for the above with a large beer and saki), but honestly not all that bad. All around, definitely a recommend if you are ever craving sushi in Laguna. read more

This is hands down, my favorite sushi place ever. The teeny tiny spot is almost hard to find. Its so narrow! but that's whats endearing about it. You are welcomed by very friendly chefs...with very loud signs on the wall asking you to turn your phones off. I always like to ask a sushi chef what he recommends because they know best people. There are no prices on the menu but I think it's fairly reasonable given its location, quality, and taste. We ordered the burrito roll *bomb*, the one that was fried, and a few others. I can't remember the names because they were numbers instead but I think one of them was the "97" roll. Anyway, I really enjoyed the fresh taste of the rolls. They were really unique and light-tasting. Nothing too heavy except for the sauce on the fried roll =). MmMm, reviewing it makes me miss the burrito roll!! It looks like their selection is pretty small, but actually, the chef will cook you anything if you describe it well enough. Don't let the lack of pricing on the menu be off-putting. The prices are relatively standard and affordable. Got mushroom stuffed yellowtail tempura battered with their special sauce for $9. Yeah, quite a mouth full, in more ways than one. Yumyum. Also got crunchy roll for $11. And it didn't make me thirsty, like most do. Visited Hapi Sushi today. It is a very small place with mostly sushi bar seats and some tables. There were two people at the sushi bar when we arrived about 2:30 pm. The sushi chef was attentive and professional. Sushi, sashimi, and rolls were good quality. A bit overpriced for what you get however. We had the crunchy roll, nigiri sushi, scallops hand roll, albacore sashimi, and yellowtail sashimi. Recommend all of these if you go. I dig the small, intimate vibe. The chef's here are fun and laid back but attentive to their guests. The last time I was in I inquired about a dish being served to another customer, and the chef said "That's the Super Expensive", when I asked how much it was, he said "You order and you find out". This place is a whole in the wall but it's fantastic. My two boys and I ate there two nights in a row because we liked it so much and we eat sushi a lot - and a lot of it! Sit at the sushi bar so Sato the owner can take care of you. Everything we had was awesome. The sashimi was great, try the octopus salad - its unique and delicious, and the calamari rings stuffed with grilled shishito peppers are insanely good too. The fish collar was great, 49 roll was superb, and the Nigiri was all excellent. His spicy tuna and yellowtail hand rolls have a great combination of veggies for crunch and are a deal at $4.50 each. This place was unsanitary and unprofessional. The person making the food was sloppy, not skilled and constantly pulled down his mask and was touching and talking without proper sanitation. Super gross. Absolute disregard for safety. The waitress started wiping the counter with eye watering bleach and water while we were eating. WTF. We STOPPED our order mid dinner. Not only did the guy barely speak any English (Spanish speaking individual), but he brought my order of tempura noodle soup where the tempura looked like they took a bunch of vegetables, dipped the whole clump in the batter and fried the whole thing together. It was a ball of vegetables - not the right way of making tempura. The noodles also looked the kind you buy in the packets at the market. I was completely unsatisfied with this dish. Lastly, I checked my credit card account and found they charged me about $8 more than they should have. The food is less than mediocre if you know what Japanese food is supposed to taste like, and how it is cooked. I cannot speak on behalf of their sushi quality since I did not order sushi.
