Happenstance is a woman-owned spot in Lawrenceville, which I genuinely love and want to support. The owner, Jill, is clearly invested in the business--any time I've seen her on site, she's greeting customers, checking in, and it's obvious she cares about people having a good experience. They catered an International Women's Day event for us last year and did a great job, and I've also been in several times on my own. When it's good, it's really good--but there is some inconsistency. I've ordered the same items on different visits and had days where it was excellent and other days where it was just so-so. My hope (and assumption) is that as staff gets more fully trained and gains experience, the quality will become more consistent. The space itself is very cute, and don't be fooled by how small it looks when you walk in--there's an upstairs and a back patio, which is a nice surprise. Pricing is a bit high for what you get, but that's pretty standard for Lawrenceville/Penn Ave. Overall, I'm glad this place exists and I'll continue to support it. With a little more consistency, it could be a standout neighborhood favorite. read more

What a fun hidden gem! We stopped in for espresso martinis, and they were fantastic, served in adorable teacups, which made the experience even more memorable. We also tried the earl grey old fashioned, which was smooth with a little lemon slice! The atmosphere was charming and unique, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Came across this spot while in town visiting some close friends, and I'm very glad I that I did! The staff I met were amazing and extremely friendly/helpful. The drinks, food, and atmosphere were all top notch. Throughout my multiple visits, I tried the Texas Two Step and the Breakfast Plate. Being from Texas, I know a good breakfast taco, and the Texas Two Step is just that. The aioli sauce was a great touch. As a usual straight black coffee drinker, I tried a couple of their specialty coffee drinks and was pleasantly surprised! A true hidden gem in Lawrenceville! I'm kicking myself for having not tried it sooner. I visited on a sunny spring weekend morning with a friend and we ordered at the counter and took our table number to the back patio. The patio is so charming - lots of tables and umbrellas and sunny spots! They also have some indoor seating and upstairs deck seating. Bigger than it seems from the outside! The coffee (I got an iced latte) was strong and tasty, and I absolutely loved my breakfast tacos and the amazing cinnamon roll. Theirs has to be in contention for one of the best in the city, I think. My friend tried the garden sammie on a bagel, and she really enjoyed it! The bagel/sandwich was massive, too. It's a great spot to meet someone for a coffee or a casual meal, and they seem pretty kid-friendly as well, as there were lots of parents with babies and toddlers present on the day I was there. I'd love to return for adult beverages in the evenings and lunch fare in the near future! This spot is such a breath of fresh air! read more

Stopped in for a few drinks on the patio on a beautiful evening. The place is quaint and unassuming from the outside. A quick trip to the back of the restaurant there's ample patio seating. The patio is beautiful, covered with lush greenery and seats with umbrellas. It was a perfect place to enjoy some delicious cocktails. The Lavender Lizzy was fresh and well balanced. It tasted like an egg, some bacon, and some tomato. Nothing special and I could've easily replicated it at home. There was such little aioli that I didn't taste it. Mama's Buttermilk Chicken Salad was my lunch choice and I was really impressed by the flavor and the croissant itself. Their croissant is absolutely one of the best I've had in PGH. I really enjoyed the pickle and fries too. The vibes here truly were amazing. The staff were very welcoming and even delievered our food to us on the 2nd floor. Chose this place for brunch with a friend last Sunday and we weren't disappointed! The space is small, as soon as you walk in, but they have a second floor of seating available. You do have a short walk outside to go up the stairs. So, I could see it being a little inconvenient on a snowy or rainy day. The owner came over and was chatting with us. She was very friendly and told us they've been open for about 6 months. We both ordered coffee and I also purchased a chocolate chip muffin and the yogurt bowl. My friend got a breakfast sandwich on a plain bagel. The coffees and yogurt bowl were out quickly. We waited 10-15 mins for the breakfast sandwich before asking where it was. They had either completely forgotten, or it was sitting in the kitchen for a few mins ready to be taken to the table. They apologized for the delay. The muffin was great; moist and had plenty of chocolate chips. The yogurt bowl was also good for a light breakfast or a snack. The granola had a nice crunch and there were some seeds in there. My friend especially liked the chipotle ? sauce on the breakfast sandwich. I'd come back to try something again and maybe check out the second floor seating. read more

It was a great portion size and really good selections! With dinner shared a half carafe of wine which was perfect and adorable, plus the wine was from a local winery and very good! For dinner had the fried chicken and croffles which is a crispy fried chicken breast atop a buttery croissant waffle dressed with rich bacon jam and a drizzle of hot honey maple syrup! It was insanely delicious! They use a croissant batter but make a waffle- GENIUS! Came in on a snowy day for a latte and some food, and I found a very nice barista behind the bar and a nice little vibe on the first floor.
