FIRST VISIT! The establishment has a cleaning solvent smell upon entry; I didn't really smell any food. The menu is pretty broad & contains a lot of delicious Asian food options. I decided on the small hibachi chicken & steak. It comes with your choice of rice and veggies. I opted for the fried rice & all the veggies (broccoli, onions, carrots -cashier said zucchini, but there were none in my container). The chicken is precooked and stored on the prep counter, used as orders come through. The steak is the same but more was being cooked as I waited. The rice portions are big, the meats are placed in top of the rice and mixed veggies portioned out of stored container as well. The cook is very meticulous at sorting a certain amount of each vegetable placed in the containers. I do not like undercooked beef, cashier said I could get mine well-done, but I guess it wasn't noted! One piece of steak was pink -partially cooked - but cold in the center. I also got a medium green tea with peach flavor- - SUPERB!!! Would I return? Yes, but I would get something that absolutely must be cooked right at the moment of ordering. P.S. I have been coming to Happy Bowl for the past 2 years. I live on UNCG campus so the location is perfect, plus, they take flex which is a part of my meal plan. I have had mostly their hibachi items, but recently I have been LOVING their noodles. I get the noodle bowl with Thai chicken, zucchini, scallions, and carrots. I get the garlic soy sauce and spicy orange sauce. This has been my go to meal before work for the last 3 weeks. They are always kind here and the owner is so sweet and funny. If they are busy, they always work as quickly as they can and will make sure you are taken care of. Plus, the music selection they have playing is AWESOME. Overall I love it here, although it is a little on the pricier side than I'd like. I definitely am glad they take my meal plan because of that. read more

This place always hits, I come all the time while I am on campus. I always recommend this place to all my friends on campus. I enjoy coming here because of the nice customer service and the great AMAZING food! The bao buns were great, so soft and steamed hot when served. I went with the thai-style chicken, juicy dark meat atop a bed of perfect sticky rice, mango, kimchi, scallions and topped with a sweet soy glaze. I devoured the entire thing in short order. My wife's bulgogi beef bowl was equally impressive. The ordering here is easy... just walk up and select your goodies from a touch screen, while the team whips up your food fresh. This place is okay. Not sure I'll be back again. The lady on the register was looking at me like" you dont know what you want?" That answer would be NO. She wasn't too friendly. I ordered a chicken burrito with fried rice. The rice wasn't fried at all. I think they just put teriyaki sauce on it to make it appear "fried". I watched the guy make it and I saw him get the white rice out of the big rice steamer and add it to my burrito. After he added the rice, cheese, black beans, pico, mushrooms, and the chicken, he passed it to the grill cook in the back. The flour wrap was placed on the grill with everything in it and rolled. Needless to say, the wrap is soggy and everything is falling out, and it's also cold. Even the chicken. The wrap had a few grill marks on it, but it was still cold and everything inside it was also cold. This is an interesting place. Very casual and fast food style, Taco Bar bring a Mexican Asian fusion to a college campus. Today, I got the Bulgogi and Bang bang shrimp bao. I was overall surprised by how much I like the bang bang shrimp however I was disappointed with the bulgogi beef. The shrimp was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Topped with sweet cabbage, it was a tasty and filling part of my meal. Also, although it was advertised as spicy, it was definitely not spicy at all but I did not mind this. The bulgogi beef had really great flavor to it however the consistency of the meat was hard and chewy. I wouldn't get this again. Lastly, my friend tried their beans Bao and this is exactly what she got, just beans in Bao. She wouldn't recommend this either. This is a cute adorable place to go for a quick Asian cuisine. This is a great new place in Greensboro! The environment is friendly with the cashier being very polite. I got the Kimchi Fried Rice and an original bubble tea (milk tea). My friend got a Salmon Poke Bowl (cooked). Both dishes were good and filling. The Kimchi Fried Rice had a nice warm fried egg on top with a gooey yolk that ran over the rice. This place was so cool! It's right near UNCG with all the college feels. It's a fusion restaurant with you favorite Mexican foods mixed with your favorite Vietnamese food. If I was still a student at UNCG, this is where I would be between classes. I went there just to try the baos and they were delicious and very unique. This place is a Asian Spanish fusion, like a lot of the gourmet food trucks. Their buns and baos are so fluffy and they're not soggy. I can't wait to return to try their RAMEN. I believe this is the first place in Greensboro that sells Ramen! The owner and the employees are very nice and informative. You don't have to worry about being clueless or not knowing what to order. Like walking through lower Manhattan, passing through Chinatown, and the smells of the steamed buns forces you to stop and partake! In short....I'm in love with Taco Bao! Pronounced Taco Bao (Bow), this place is Asian Fusion/Korean and located basically on the campus of UNCG. With limited parking on the street only, you'll struggle to find parking, but it's completely worth it! Having heard good things, I came by this Sunday to find out what the whispers are all about. The interior is tastefully done with a bit of a higher class than typical cuisines of this nature. It's got ample seating for probably 25-30 people, and a bit of a fast food look without the fast food results. The menu is a bit confusing I must admit, however they are quite aware and are considering changing it up. Tacos that are done Korean/Asian style is their specialty with steamed buns serving as their taco base! If you've never had steamed buns in either NY, DC, San Fran, or Seattle then you've certainly missed out. We went with a few things to get a feel for what they're doing here. The three tacos, Bao style (steamed buns), was a must. Bang Bang Shrimp, Tempura Fish, and Kara Chicken with Chicken Gyoza as my selected side. The tempura fish with housemade tarter was incredible! The shrimp and Kara fried chicken were equally good as well, but perhaps the dumplings with their specially made sesame sauce stole the spotlight! This sauce should be bottled and sold to all of her customers! The other dish ordered was the Kimchi Rice with a fried egg and Bulgogi Beef added to the dish. The Kimchi speaks for itself, but the added egg and excellent Bulgogi Beef version just takes this to another level! Adding the Nori Fries, per their recommendation, was a pleasant surprise as this turned out to be a fantastic side item. Taco Bao is a fantastic addition to the subpar Asian Fusion/Korean scene in this area due to their excellent version of steamed buns....as tacos! If I had one piece of advice it would be to stick to what your great at doing. Their tacos are also available in corn and flour as well, which to me is not needed and shouldn't be offered. People need to experience this fine art of Korean cuisine that is unique to this area. Carry on Taco Bao, and whatever you do, don't change! read more

I wanted something different to try and when looking up Happy Bowl, I wanted to see it for myself. Unfortunately, it's not the greatest place when it comes to quality. I asked for Build your own Noodle bowl with Thai Chicken, seaweed alas, kimchi and broccoli. Along with a Beef Bao and an original tea. The tea was gross. When I tasted the boba, they were too old and were dissolving inside the drink. So I was drinking it with clumps of the boba, I didn't finish it. The Noodle bowl was okay, but they added too much sauce with it and it became too soggy. It was room temperature and that itself is already is disappointing. The bao was good. The beef had a nice flavor to it. The customer service lady was nice, but the cooks behind the glass kept on looking at me like I had a difficult order. This restaurant popped up as the new hot and new restaurant so I knew I had to try it. I ordered the rice bowl with Thai chicken, pickled jalapeños, fajita vegetables, and edamame. I thought the chicken tasted very much like standard hibachi chicken, however overall it was really good. The pickled jalapeños added a really nice touch to the dish, but they were also really spicy! I couldn't decide on a sauce so I had them put the Thai peanut and garlic soy on the side. Both sauces added a completely different flavor to the dish and both were excellent. The rice bowl was about $9, but it was a ton of food- enough for me to eat a complete meal for lunch the next day. Even though this place is on the UNCG campus, it's really easy to find. The woman serving us was very helpful in helping me navigate the menu and also very accommodating. Just a recommendation for the restaurant owners, because you have new summer hours posted, you might want to put the dates on that notice as well. I was a little confused as to when they closed because I wasn't sure when those summer hours actually took place seeing we are in the end days of classes. Either way, I would definitely go back. This little shop sits on the street level of Spartan Village on Lee St/Gate City Bvld but it's facing Glenwood St. It's an interesting mix of Chinese steamed bao buns, Korean flavors, tacos and kimchi noodle/rice bowls added into the menu mix. It's overly expensive for the quality and quantity of ingredients though. Major bonus points for having Cheerwine in the soda machine. I had high hopes going into it because I used to love getting bao from little Chinese place near where I lived in Atlanta. Unfortunately they were dashed as this place seems to just reheat frozen buns like you can buy at Super G. They didn't seem like they were made in house. I ordered the 2 bao combo with bang bang shrimp, Thai chicken and nori fries and drink for $11, not a very good deal at all. Each bao had a base of crunchy pickled veg slaw with red cabbage, carrot, cuke and green onion that would make an excellent veggie bao on it's own, it was great. They should add that as menu option, because I would order it for sure. You could then add a protein like bulgogi beef, Thai chicken, bang bang shrimp and a couple more. The bang bang shrimp had no bang and awful shrimp. The sauce was basically orange mayo with zero heat. The shrimp were those little breaded ones with more bread than shrimp like Mrs. Paul's or something. I don't even understand that, small IQF shrimp are super cheap and you can toss them with a little seasoned flour and fry for 30 sec to make something fresh and delicious, or just toss on the flat top with a little soy sauce for grilled shrimp. Very odd choice to me. The Thai chicken was very good, I would eat that again on a piece of cardboard. It used dark meat pieces which stayed nice and plump and juicy. The sauce had that familiar rich Thai-style peanut ginger dressing flavor. It mixed very well with sharpness of the veggies. My side was the nori fries which had a * for being spicy. I allow for my high chile tolerance since I start most days by picking a ghost pepper and putting half of it in my scrambled eggs, but this had zero heat to me. It did have lots of small shreds of nori though, and I love nori's odd briny wet-grass flavor, so these were a win even without the heat for me. The fries were just frozen bagged thin strips like MCD's, which I don't get again, because they're so easy and cheap to make, especially if you're charging premium prices like $11 or $14. I took an order of their Korean wings home to have later that night watching the fights, and I loved them. $6 for 6 big fat wings smothered in spicy gochujang sauce sprinkled with white sesame seeds. I fear getting addicted to these and making many trips into town just to get an order. I skipped the tacos because they were crunchy corn shells or flour tortilla and I don't really care for either of those. Bottled water is $2 each. I think that's a health code violation not to provide water upon request. The owner/manager was speaking sharply to customers (it comes with sauce--you don't get anymore) and her employees. I received the wrong order. They fixed it. My taco bao with beef was ok. The beef was over cooked. The shrimp on the shrimp bao was the processed fried kind that comes out of s box. More sauce on each would have helped but after seeing the sign etc I was not going to ask for any extra sauce! I ordered hot tea and there was no sugar to put in it. This is a clean, small, spot with seating for about 25 folks. The main menu is a fusion of Mexican and Korean foods and it is designed for you to build a meal, so it may take a minute to figure it out. Upon entry, there are a list of specials and always something that catches your eye. The most well known secret is the hidden menu (ask and give the secret hand shake and you will see it ). It's filled with various dishes that include fried pork, chicken, and rice dishes. It reads very well and tastes just as good. The pork dishes are good and kimchi is always a pleasant option. As you know, Kimchi varies in taste from region to region. Here, it is not fishy. Today's meal was pork with rice and kimchi. The pork was sliced thin, tender, and well flavored. The rice has that nice sticky quality I like. The kimchi has a nice tangy bite and not fishy taste (I prefer the fishy taste). The plate is topped with a fried egg with just enough yolk to moisten the rice, nice! It will take a while to experience all they offer, but I will get it all in. I am not in Love with it yet, but I definitely leave out happy and satisfied, wanting to return for something new. In my past visits, my meals usually cost about $10. Well worth the price. read more

Taco Bao recently opened at UNCG's new eating area on West Gate City Blvd. It's a very convenient location for students and for those who are driving, there is a small parking space in the back of the building. Both times I've been, I had a great experience and enjoyed their food. Their Baos are flavorful and thick with toppings and meat. My favorites are the Bang Bang Shrimp and Braised Pork. They offer numerous sides and my favorite so far has been the Nori fries! My friend tried their Kimchi Fried Rice and we both thought it was decent. It was pretty oily/greasy, so that kind of made it less enjoyable. I think it's a little pricey in my opinion, but a great place to come to if you want to splurge on Asian/Mexican fusion food!
