Outside of China town this place is the best. Berwyn is a desert of mediocre Chinese restaurants so anything you find close is a bonus. While not in the city of Berwyn you could hit it with a pebble without trying hard. They have flavorful food, quality service and an expansive menu. Happy Chef is about 5 minutes away from my boyfriend's house, so when we want some tasty Chinese takeout, we order from here. They are friendly and fast. My favorite is the Kung Pao Chicken (we ask for it to be made spicy). It is always consistent and really tasty. I've also had the pot stickers which were a little on the thick side for me. The dipping sauce was very good though. I have also had the Szechuan Chicken and it was not my cup of tea. So, you ask why a 4 rating...well, because I crave the Kung Pao Chicken. It's my fav! In fact, I want it tonight (even thought I just had it 2 nights ago...but unfortunately I am not in the city tonight...damn!). Welp, you can't be the price, and now that Tsang is gone (another take-out joint right down the street that was so awesome you wouldn't even believe) there's not much else in the area. It's only average food, and you get like 10 times more rice and veggies than you do meat. They need to increase the meat portions and spice up their flavoring a bit. It's like the Dave Matthews Band of Chinese take-out: decent enough to make you want to stick with it for a bit at a time, but overall so middle-of-the-road as to be bad. I've been here twice in the last week! The food is good, plentiful, tasty and hot! Last week, I ordered the chicken with broccoli - yum! The gravy was tasty and the meal had plenty of vegetables. Tonight - I ordered their wings! I got 6 large, tasty wings for just $3.50! If I had gone down the block, I would've paid twice that much just for wings! This place has been my go-to for Chinese since moving to Chicagoland. The food is always good, and the prices are always right and the portions are HUGE. Like, I'm not sure how they make money. It's crazy! I always order knowing that I will have lunch and dinner set for the next 1-2 days. I've now tried a few other items off their menu that were not as great-particularly off their Thai menu. The thai egg rolls tasted nothing like authentic Thai egg rolls-they had some type of odd spice and flavor that I was not accustomed to. The red curry with chicken was flavorless. I've also tried beef fried rice in which they serve a generous portion with plenty of beef. The last occasion I tried beef with tomato pepper which came with zero tomato, but carrots instead....was not happy about that. Ordered the Crab Rangoon for the stepdaughter as well as an order for everyone else since it was so well reviewed here; have to say I was not disappointed- very cream-cheesy as well as onion and crab flavour. Also tried the Mongolian Beef which all found delicious! Meat was tender even when reheated, and not like shoe leather like I have had from some other places. This was a review I did for Yahoo on 7-29-12. Ugh! These guys are going to be in rough times. If their best foot is forward, they must be walking backwards because I did not like what I got. I like many foreign foods from Malay to Middle East and several countries in between. But like most people, I have a special place in my heart AND stomach for chinese and thai. I live 2 blocks away from Happy Chef and I am a fan of Tasty House , which is another two blocks further into Berwyn. Tasty House serves mostly chinese food (and there are a bazillion chinese restaurants in a 5-mile radius), but seeing that HC serves thai food was a huge plus (and if they were closer than TH, I'd be walking shorter distances and supporting a business in my town), so I was willing to give them a try. Now I'm not plugging TH in particular, but as far as chinese food is concerned, TH has set the bar because they cook food in a way that I like. They ALWAYS have business and they've been around for as long as I have been living in FP, which has been 8 years, which tells me that they are an established local favorite. So getting back to HC, I ordered a typical standard dish, chicken pad thai. I did not eat in because I believe that the quality of food for those who eat in, those who take out, and those who request delivery, ought to be the same (discounting the fact that the food is piping hot and fresh from the kitchen if you eat at the location). So having eaten thai for years in all sorts of restaurants, I know what fine-dine cuisine is all the way down to bottom-basement fare. I paid $8, so I am expecting a dish that is at least average in quality. The two closest thai restaurants I know of are both on Madison, one is in FP and the other in Oak Park by the hospital. I would be able to get the same dish for roughly the same price and those places have set the bar for thai cuisine. So how was the food??!??, you are all asking... The speed of preparation was reasonable. I expect the dish to be ready to walk out of there in 10 minutes, which it was. I brought it home and immediately upon looking at it, I was very displeased. It only got worse after that. If you know thai food, even well enough to cook it, it is not noodles and meat and nothing else. It is supposed to be a mixture of noodles with other ingredients typical for this dish. This means bean sprouts, egg, nuts, shallots, garlic, chives, and onions. The sauce should be made with tamarind and fish sauce to give it that characteristic pad thai taste. When I first saw it, the noodles were red like they were spiced up. But it was not spicy (I did not order spicy) and the taste was *not* pad thai. The appearance and taste looked something like it was cooked with ketchup. The noodles were not soft, but hard (like they were not cooked long enough). There was no egg, very little bean sprouts and onion. The taste was so bad (matched by the appearance, I just could not get over how red it looked!) that I couldn't finish it. It was like an insult to Thailand, I can t imagine the cooks being thai and making such a creation where the plate is patriotically as Thai as baseball is red-blooded American. Decided to give this place a second chance. It was a bitterly cold and snowy day and after working all day I wasn't in the mood to go food shopping or drive down to my normal Chinese take out place. Out of desperation I gave this place another try. I was pleasantly suprized. I orderd wonton. Soup which was very tasty as well as combo fried rice. This was also good, the meat was very tender and there was a good amount of each type(shrimp, beef, chicken,). It was also a very generous portion, I was eating it for at least 3 days after. My only complaint was that the rice was a bit bland when I did not eat it with a piece of meat. But I just added my own so no biggie' read more

I will not order from here again. The food is horrible. My sister touted about how they have thai food, and let me tell you, it's not thai food! I got thai basil spring rolls. Basically, imagine an egg roll in a different wrapper. No basil, nothing the made me think thai. The thai basil noodle was stir fry with a congealed lump of rice noodles, with some veggies and three pieces of basil. It was obvious the cook doesn't know how to cook with rice noodles. None of the veggies nor meat were mixed in with the noodles, they were just on the side. The ball of rice noodles was so compacted, I wasn't eating rice noodles as much as chunks I managed to break off. The thai iced tea even seemed off, which is really disappointing. For the sake of matters, I also tried their shrimp in garlic and black bean. Nasty. Needed more garlic, and the shrimp were worrisome. Some were done properly, others were over done. The beans in the sauce had an overpowering bitter taste. All in all, nothing tasted that great, and even if it's free, I don't want to eat here again. read more

I tried to leave a review on the Happy Chef-online ordering site and it would not post it. Nuff said. Overall the food was horrible and being a manager of a restaurant, I am very lenient in giving negative reviews as restaurants have a poor night etc. However, what we received was not an indication of a poor night, but instead of a poor restaurant. I ordered $45 in food (7 items) from apps (spice wings, egg rolls, pot stickers, shu mai) to entrees (shrimp egg fu young, vegetable lo-mein, and vegetable fried rice). Other than the veg fried rice, we literally threw everything away in the garbage, the food quality was horrible. I am only posting here after trying to reach the restaurant to no avail. I get businesses having a bad night. But for neither the restaurant nor the online service to contact me after leaving the similar review makes me bring it to the public. As a restaurant manager, I personally handle all Reviews (both positive and negative ) as they occur, and strive to correct / rectify the diners experience to prevent them from such a posting.
