We stopped here on Saturday morning for some coffee. I saw that they had sandwiches in their cooler and asked if they were made that morning. "They were made yesterday." She said. I was surprised because for once, out of all the times I've asked that question, no one has ever said the honest truth. They usually reply with an "Uh, yeah we made them early this morning.". A little honesty in my opinion is an honorable trait so she scored huge points with me. She offered to make me a fresh one, but I was in a hurry and was content with a ham and cheese croissant, coffee and was on my way. (They were both good...she also offered to warm it up, which I would have taken her up on it, but again, I was in a rush...) I went back in today for some more caffeine and their doughnuts looked soooo good, I wanted to climb in the case and take a nap! Seriously. And they smelled heavenly. I haven't had a doughnut in a while, so I broke down and got a chocolate sprinkle. It was delicious and fresh. The owner was cheery, pleasant and didn't yell at me when I took pictures, and I get yelled at a lot :) She was very appreciative when I told her I was going to write a review for her shop on Yelp because I liked her doughnuts better than Uncle Joe's, which has been a staple in San Gabriel for a gazillion years. Just because someone says a place is "good" or the "best" doesn't mean a thing. What's important to me is that my coffee tastes good, my doughnut is fresh- doesn't make me sick and that the owner is friendly and honest about not trying to pass of day old doughnuts for fresh ones. She has a box of Day Old doughnuts bursting out of the box for $3.50. I was tempted, but the muffin top (mine, not the ones in the case) told me not to... I was doing enough damage already. This places deserves an awesome review! I've been going since I was a little kid traversing the mean streets of San Gabriel to get here. Actually Happy Donut is down the street from me so walking here is no problem. Now that I'm older and I can drive i don't have to walk here but it's nice to walk around the neighborhood. I don't go as often as I used to but I go once every two to three weeks. When you first arrive at Happy Donut, it is a donut shop that looks dated. It doesn't matter because the donuts they make are awesome. There is indoor seating as well as some outdoor seating. They used to have one of the old school Street Fighter II Arcade machines and as a kid I would always go down there to get a donut, play some street fighter and then go home. Their donuts are great. I always get a Chocolate twist or the sprinkled donuts. The sprinkled donuts change if there is a major holiday such as Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Their bear claws are always good and a safe bet to eat. I recommend if you're gonna go here a lot don't stuff yourself with a bunch of super fatty donuts. The price of the donuts are cheap and make sure you go in the morning when the donuts are fresh. If you don't go in the morning and go in the afternoon, the donut selection is limited. A true donut shop. Prices are very fair and cheaper than the 'chain' donut shops. The place is clean and staff is friendly. Now for the donuts: they have a good selection, not a crazy amount, but everything they make is delicious. Been going to Happy Donut since I was a kid. Never had a bad experience. Owner is very nice and always keeps the place clean. And the donuts are fresh. Prices are reasonable. The criticism about the glaze is not unfounded. The glaze is different on these donuts than on most others. There's a lot of glaze and sugar on these puppies, and it sometimes falls off the donuts like ice shavings. But it doesn't mean that the donuts aren't delicious. Some of my favs from Happy include: Jelly Filled, Glazed, Bear Claw, Apple Fridder. Coffee is pretty fresh here too. There's a reason why Happy has been around as long as it has. I love these doughnuts. They are light and airy and soo damn delicious. I was just there this afternoon to get my sugary doughnut fix, and for $8.20 a dozen--SOLD! These doughnuts will last me a week..okay..maybe 3 days. The lady behind the counter is super sweet, nice and always smiles to her customers. I've been going to Mr. Good's Donuts on Valley Blvd for years before I found this place. I love this place so much especially since I lived really close to it for a long time; I can smell the scent of sweet donuts wafting in the air around 4 and 5 am and it reminds me of home :) the business owners have been managing this place for so long now and they're so sweet. Where do i start? I love the fact that they open super early or in my case pate when im getting home in the morning. My favorite is the ham and cheese crossaint, totally worth the 2.95. Just came her recently. I feel a little let-down by the "high" reviews here on Yelp. I got a chance to order a cold-sandwich and a bunch of donuts. The cold sandwich wasn't bad- so-so, wrapped in a plastic wrap for $3, it's def. not presentable. However when I was eating it, it actually tasted decent. In terms of donut quality, I felt that the "glaze" here is very thin and does not have the thickness as other places. The quality is very "meh".. I feel that they charge a lot more for their donuts here more than my "usual" donut place but the quality is not as good. Also the guy who serviced me was not very friendly. Usually my other donut place is way better. My other place provides DELICIOUS fresh donuts at ANY time of the day..and very friendly service...so that held the bar very high. Really good donut shop. Apple fritter is very good, crunchy on the edges yet soft inside and not too much glaze. Old fashioned donuts are also very good with a nice crunchy outside but lighter and softer dough compared to other old fashioned donuts I've had. Really wanted to like this donut place. The apple fritters are just terrible though. Grocery store fritters are significantly better. As a point of reference, Pronto in Pasadena has awesome fritters. None of their donuts have enough glaze, which makes for a truly disappointing donut experience. I will say that the chocolate cake donuts are very good though, but that is not enough for me.
