Cool takeout place. The food was really good. I enjoyed especially the pork fried rice, was very flavorful. I had the boneless ribs which were delicious and I enjoyed the steamed dumplings. Egg roll was nicely loaded too. The staff were very nice and courteous. The place has a few tables and seats despite being very spacious but otherwise, it's your basic takeout place. A typical Chinese fast food joint in Astoria with typical decor , typical menu and typical me will order take out for my slacker slob buddies on football Sunday . Made the call , ordered the spare ribs, egg rolls , chow mein , veggie fried rice , chicken with broccoli and a few other items my buds like but I can skip . Was told all will be ready for pick up in 30 minutes and lady on phone was right especially with the Cost of 83 bucks . I have had better , I have had worst , so I can say the happy garden has decent Chinese food and from the empty containers my boys would agree . Ate here today for lunch by myself during my lunch break while working full time and across the street as a teacher assistant at The 30th Avenue School (Q300). I had brought and ate one of the lunch special which was the Szechuan style shrimp, chose pork fried rice and wonton soup, can of soda and had a bag of fried wonton strips. It was good and delicious. The service there was fast, quick and attentive that I didn't feel rushed about what to choose a lunch special to try for the first time. I couldn't agree more. I've only tried 2 Chinese take out restaurants since living in Astoria (because Chinese people don't really eat Chinese take out food, like someone else mentioned, it's not "real" Chinese food). The other one being the Chinese place right next to the train station. I would say this one is substantially better! The one by the train station, my mouth felt so dehydrated after I ate there. Anyway, this place is conveniently located about 3 blocks off the 30th Ave N/Q train station. I ordered the beef ho fun with egg gravy. The lady was really nice and can speak both Cantonese and Mandarin, but she originally came from Malaysia. The food came out relatively quickly and I brought it back to my apartment to eat. There is sitting area there, just felt weird to sit there and eat by myself. By the time I got home, the container had opened up so the gravy kinda spilled a bit but since I was home it wasn't too hard to fix that problem. The entrée was just what I needed to fulfill my food craving. It was really good and I didn't feel like my mouth was dry afterwards (which is usually caused by too much MSG). The price is a little bit on the pricey side but I guess because I'm used to the Chinese food prices of Flushing/Chinatown. So I guess for Astoria, the prices are on par with everything else around there (aka slightly higher than normal). read more

It seems Astoria with it's vast array of culinary delights: Greek, Turkish, BBQ, Indian, etc., lacks a proper Chinese sit down restaurant. Maybe there is no demand for Chinese food in Astoria, LIC, but I see so many take out places that this is not the answer. Maybe because we are so close to Chinatown in Flushing. Maybe, who knows the reason. So, with lack of choices, we are left with these take out joints that seem to be located by every train station on the N line. We have 3 take out places on 30th Ave. and Happy Garden is one. It is your standard "Americanize Chinese" restaurant. It has standard food options. It has standard pricing. Even the menu seems to be standard among the American Chinese take out joints. Happy Garden serves a purpose. It participates in Grub-Hub, no more language barriers. They seem to get the order right, but half the time they miss the "hot oil" with my order. Not the end of the world, but come on man. Best part, deliver is fast. Real fast. I am only 500 feet from their front door. The quality of food is OK within the standardize American Chinese menu. Dumplings, ribs, chow mien, lo mien, general this and delight that. Standard beef, chicken, pork and shrimp dishes. I have learned over the years that you stick with the basics in American Chinese take out joints. Soup, lo mien, rice, chow mien and their lunch special, all Americanize dishes. I have learn to enjoy their roast pork lo mien, not bad. Tasty and not oily. Their pork fried rice decent. Also, tasty and not oily. Dumplings are just a filler. Nothing to write home about. Soups seem to be their best item. Always hot, tasty and not salty. Lunch special also very standard, $6.95 with entree, soup and soda. Overall, Happy Garden has a niche within the community. They provide inexpensive Chinese food for delivery and take out. While it is Americanize the food always seems to be hot, even on cold winter nights. I walk by their front door every day and I see that Magic "A", big plus with me. read more

This place is great!!! I was super cold and hungry the day before a snow storm and decided to come in here for a quick eat. Initially, I wanted to eat something Mediterranean considering that I was in Astoria, but ended up ordering chicken with broccoli (stir fried with no oil) and boy was it GOOD!!! More so, the white rice that came with my chicken and broccoli was amazing. Usually my experience at other Chinese Fast Food is that the rice is dry or of cheaper quality but the one here was cooked absolutely perfect. I was recommended the chicken cutlet pizza from you fine fellow Yelpers. And... whoaaaaa doggie! This is NOT diet food. It's a thin-ish crust pizza with strips of fried chicken cutlets. Yes, fried! I did not know this until it appeared at my door, greasy and gooey and pleading for me to try it. Did it change my life? No. Was it yummy? Hell to the yeah. Caveat -- it has a mild flavor. Not *bland* but subtle. I sprinkled it with red pepper flakes to kick it up, 'cuz I'm from Texas and crave heat. The small pie was $15.15 after tax and, regrettably, there's no way I will finish this thing as I would probably turn bulimic from intense guilt. Flavor factor: 3-star for a CHEAP, giant pizza. If you've got a house full of drunken bastards, you cannot do any better for the money. (Word to the wise: Do yourself a favor and drink beer with the pizza. The flavors are perfect together. As far as takeout Chinese is concerned, this place is better than many others in the area that I've tried. The aunties at the counter are so friendly, the place is kept very tidy and the food is really delicious. Also, the portions are gigantic for the great prices. In a recent visit, I was shy a couple bucks because I purchased more than I anticipated. The woman was very kind to let me pay them back next time. Her gracious attitude meant a lot to me and I'll always be coming back to give them service. Very rude delivery guy! I have been ordering in this establishment for years! And today for some reason they put a wrong address in my order, I waited for almost an hour for my food to arrive then they called me to request me to go downstairs to wait for the delivery guy because he attempted to deliver twice, I did go downstairs outside the Apartment to wait for him and called the restaurant, I found out that the delivery guy was in a wrong address I still patiently waited but when the delivery guy came he was so disrespectful mind you I even gave him a tip but he was so rude and threatening as if I was the one who gave the wrong address ( it was Shirley's sister who made the mistake and not me) I have been loyal to this restaurant for over 10 years but I think I will start eating somewhere else, I cannot stand the fact that I got so disrespected! read more

I Have been going here for 9 years, back when I was a young broke teenager, ahh the memories. The place is great. With their vast varieties of dishes on their menus you can have chinese, tex-mex or italian. But what I love most about Happy Garden is... the italian ices sold out the window on those hot summer days. What an utterly confusing setup. I've been to this place more times than I can count and had no idea it was connected to the Italian/Tex Mex place next door! I guess I can only speak to the "Chinese" side of the establishment, which is pretty standard as far as Chinese food goes. I'm sure we all have our ONE tried-and-true takeout place, and this is it for me. The woman at the counter is so sweet and knows my order every time. *WARNING* You have to do your own calculation when you order otherwise, they will charge you extra ! ! ! Twice this month they charged me more than what I supposed to pay. The first time I only calculated that I will pay $37 for my order, she charged me $53! I asked her if she could show me how she came up with that amount, then she said it is only $39.70 (still more from my calculation). The second time, my calculation is only for $22 (yeah i put taxes), but she charged me $23 when she even forgot to charge me for the soup that I ordered.
