Review Visit: February 14th, 2013 As I write this blog, I am eating some Cherry Garden! I was in Washington for a weekend and hungry so I decided to try Cherry Garden again; since I haven't had it since 2013. My previous visit was on Valentine's Day and I remember not being too excited with the food back then. I forget what I ordered but it was probably something like chicken fried rice or general tsao's, since those are my go-to orders. It was good but nothing great. I've talked to other people who live in the area and they love it, so it may just be a personal thing. But hey, things changed after 5 years, right? This time I ordered some ham fried rice since I got some at Golden Kitchen a few weeks ago and have been craving more since then. Did Cherry Garden scratch my itch? Kind of. The ham fried rice was pretty good but lacking that WOW factor. It's almost like they cook their food in a more... healthier fashion. With America's growing obesity issue, that could be a good thing! But I digress. The inside of Cherry Garden offers plenty of seating. The area where you order food to-go is separated from the seating area by some doors. So if you go to eat-in, you are secluded a bit from the traffic of people coming in and placing orders. With it attached to a strip mall area, there is plenty of parking, so that'll never be a concern. There is a website advertised on the menu but be warned when you visit it; my computer alerted me that it was a malicious website. Just think of one of those giant double-sided Chinese menus and that's exactly what this place offers. My fortune cookie was spot on though. It said, "Traveling at this time would be a good investment of time & money". Which is fantastic as I have traveled quite a bit lately and will be going to St. Louis soon to see a Cardinals game with my mom. So let's see what places I visit while down there! Ordered the cashew chicken with nuts. The "chicken" was 80% breading & when cut open you could see minuscule bits of meat. Best part of the meal was the steamed rice & canned nuts sprinkled on top. Waste of $14. Service was good & atmosphere was that of a typical Chinese restaurant. Will not be returning. read more

All the chicken tasted freezer burnt. The Pork fried rice as more like Mexican rice. We order Orange, General Tso and Sesame all three were the same. Dumpings and eggs rolls also tasted freezer burnt. The drinks were great. Restroom was extremely wet like they hosed the whole thing down and had a training urinal. This restaurant used to be our "go-to" place for Asian food in this area, and we have gone there for years and always loved it. But the quality has DRASTICALLY declined since it went under new ownership, and the food we had tonight was almost inedible. The shrimp dish we ordered smelled very "off", and the Hunan Beef dish had literally no meat in it, and the meat that was there was nearly inedible, tough, and tasted like no meat I've ever had in a dish like this. It was a total ripoff and waste of money. There are a lot of other recent bad reviews across different platforms, so I think there is a general consensus that this place has drastically declined in quality. Don't waste your money there. Fast hot food reasonably priced. Ordered General Tso's chicken, chicken and pork lo mein. Got dinner combos with pork fried rice, one with egg roll and one with crab rangoon. Not a big fan of the crab rangoon. General Tso's was not spicy at all. Nothing special in the sauce but the chicken was moist and tender. The pork and chicken lo mein were both fresh and full of meat. Would definitely recommend to satiate a Chinese food craving. read more

The food is good, and so is the service. But I wish they'd fix their phone. Whenever I call there to place an order, the connection is bad, and I'm told to place the phone closer to my mouth, as if I don't know how to use a phone. Consequently, they have to call me back to get the order taken--every time. The problem is clearly on their end, as I do not have this issue with any other number I call. I do wonder why the place is always freezing cold in the winter and overwhelmingly hot in the summer. read more

Worst "fried rice" ever. No flavor, period.

The food was very good. The portions are huge- enough for two meals. The dining area is clean and spacious. I had the broccoli Szechuan. It was labeled spicy but definitely was not. My husband had the sesame tofu. The sesame tofu was large chunks of soft tofu in a sauce similar to sweet and sour. Bathrooms need a little TLC. I really think a restaurant's restrooms are so important- it's where the employees clean their hands too! I would return if I was in the area. read more

After hearing about this place for awhile, a friend and I decided to give it a try on a random Wednesday night. When we pull up to the place, there are at least 15-20 people inside ordering or waiting for food. That is pretty impressive for mid-week in Washington!! At first we thought it was carry-out only but then saw the other side is all seating. We stuck to trying their maki rolls and were very impressed! I had the combo of 2 rolls for $8.95 and my friend just had 2 rolls for about $10. Besides being served tap water in a syrofoam cup with no ice (not recommended - just splurge on a bottle!) our rolls were very well wrapped with plenty of ingredients inside. My friend's roll containing seaweed salad looked really good. The Mississippi roll had eel and avocado which turned out to be too mushy of a combo for me. I look forward to trying more of their huge list of rolls! read more

What a disappointment this place has become . A couple of years ago, this would have been a five star review. We just called to place an order. If you want sushi, don't bother. Apparently, the way they produce sushi now is that they make certain things in the morning, and when they're out they're out. So many things wrong with this business paradigm. Where to start... first of all, who wants sushi at 6:30 p.m., that was made in the morning? Nobody in this family. We could get that at Kroger, but we don't. Because old sushi is disgusting. Secondly, they used to make it to order right in front of you. If you want to add anything, you are out of luck. Thirdly, if you have any kind of food issue or allergy, you are again out of luck. Because, again, nothing is made to order now. Let's not get into the flippancy or general malaise of the teen girl I spoke to on the phone. Let's consider her a blip in the continuum of restaurant staffing, shall we? Because in the end, it's not her fault that this establishment has gone downhill and is phoning it in, so to speak. Is it her fault that she cared not that Cherry Garden just lost a loyal customer? Is it her fault she had to check to see what sushi they "had in stock?" Always staff is an important part of the dining experience and I give this attentive staff 5/5 stars. Sushi here is awesome, and custom made to taste. You can watch them make it right in front of you or tweak them as requested. So for sushi this is the place to go. Prices are spot on too. However this is not the place to get cooked hot meals.The fried rice was bland & the pineapple chicken was soggy. If you want cooked Chinese food Go down the road about a mile to China House Buffet much better same price range if your not into sushi/ shushimi All in all for a sushi spot I give it 5 stars read more

Decent Chinese food and sushi are extremely hard to come by in this area. We decided to try this place out for the sushi and were pleasantly surprised. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but it's certainly not bad at all- considering that we are in Central Illinois. I normally get the shrimp tempura roll and it's perfectly fine here. The dining area isn't much to look at, I would consider this more of a take out place. I have not tried the Chinese food options. read more

Very good food! Have always been happy with it! Only bad thing is no one there seems to speak English, and they're not very friendly. My husband has never come home with the same dish packed in the same way. It's either really small or super huge. The kungPow beef somehow comes as a soup when we get it to take home versus ordering it to eat there. And be warned if you ask for sweet-and-sour sauce they will give you duck sauce, if you want sweet and sour sauce ask for the red sauce. And expect it to take a very long time! But like with anything you'd eat somewhere enough you'll hit at least one or two snags. I just happened to have a couple shards of chicken bone one time which bothered me since my two year old was also eating from my plate that night.
