Went to Happy Hana today for the first time. The pork teriyaki portion was huge! We always order pork from teriyaki places and sometimes the meat can be a little dry, but not here. The pork was very flavorful and tender, and even though I forgot to order extra sauce, it had plenty. The owner is very kind and friendly, and even offered a cup of free egg drop soup while I waited for my to go order. I will definitely be back! read more

We ordered kang Pao chicken plate and it was stale and spoiled we can take the sourness in the food and the chicken tasted that it was stale and when we called and asked for refund we were told they will refund the card later we brought back the plate to show them they still gave us hard time refunding the money for that specific plate at the end they didn't ga to e us t the e full refund for that plate so be aware that they serve old food and sometimes spoiled we will never go back to that restaurant read more

This teriyaki place has the nicest people there's people that work there and and I think the freshest stickiest white rice and amazing chicken teriyaki I've had almost ever... In fact I cannot really think of a place that is better than this. They are always happy too to serve you and the food is hot and delicious. There to go time is very short for waiting to get your dish. They're in a convenient location shopping center in University Place. And they are just lovely people and really an example of christians of christians which they are it's really cool they play soccer play some worship music low in the background , and one time I heard it and asked, and their faces lit up because of the joy they have in running a honest good business with quality food and a lovely attitude. read more

My parents live in UP and really wanted takeout from here, so I went and picked it up. The reviews that mention how friendly the staff is weren't wrong -- SO NICE! Seriously some of the best customer service I have seen in awhile. Only minor complaint: The teriyaki sauce is REALLY salty. Made me super thirsty and all three of us noticed. Otherwise, good cashew chicken, pieces of meat in the teriyaki were good, chicken stir fry was tasty, and my strawberry bubble tea had very fresh tapioca. I would easily return! read more

Ordered a shrimp fried rice and a hot and spicy tofu to go. The tofu meal wasn't on the menu but they were kind enough to make it for us. The shrimp fried rice was good. I noticed that they didn't clean the shrimp so that was off putting and the veggies in the shrimp were the frozen peas and cubed carrots. The tofu meal was also just ok. The cubed tofu wasn't fried enough and the pieces were huge so when you would eat it fried outside would fall off and the inside had no sauce or much flavor. So if you are looking for a feast on a budget, then welcome to Happy Hana. My friend took me here when I was in town and I will forever go back. We both got a double meat plate. I got chicken teriyaki and orange chicken. My friend got beef and teriyaki chicken. The plates come with two heaping mounds of white rice and a nice side salad. I am not a big fan of salad but I quickly devoured everything else. The teriyaki chicken was moist and supple and they don't shy away from the sauce. The orange chicken was fried to perfection and smothered in orange goodness. The rice was so hot and fresh it was steaming when it arrived. I also got a coke which was as crisp as the day is long. We also got egg drop soup. I am not a huge fan since its basically chicken noodle with veggies but I could've drunk the soup liquid portion. It was so flavorful. One of the only places I actually like their soup. They played Christian music the entire time which was nice. Very family-friendly. The service was so passionately nice and caring I really felt taken care of. The tables were clean when we arrived and the entire restaurant was spotless for being the dinner rush. The owners really care. I will go back once I am in town. It is worth making a trip out. read more

My go-to for friendly service and great tasting food! I lived in Asia for 3 years, these guys make quality stuff, but honestly my fav part about coming here is seeing how great they are with their customers. They have regulars so that tells you a place is good when they keep their customers coming back. On my first visit, I saw the lady at the register run to the door to open it for an elderly patient exiting the restaurant. I then watched her hug another patient and greet him by name when he arrived for a pick up. It was very cool to see. We need more restaurants like this. read more

If you're craving teriyaki, you need to try this place! It's all about the sauce and smokey meats and this place does both right. You could drive past this place without noticing it's there, as it's in a kinda strip mall/ apartment building/ shopping area, and underneath the real estate building above it. It's worth the search. Best teriyaki in Tacoma area. The two ladies who work the register are very kind, especially once they begin to recognize you. The best items I've had there are the house fried rice, Szechuan beef, and broccoli beef! My friends are also real fond of the katsu. For a teriyaki place food and service are exquisite. I have eaten here many times, the food is fantastic and for the price, you get a lot of it! When I order, I decline the salad and they give me extra rice and then I take it home and add my own veggies to it. There is enough for 2 or 3 meals. I always get the chicken. I don't like the texture of the beef and I think the pork is really fatty. Customer service is good IF you order ahead. It seems really good if eat in too, but I felt they were really short with me when I walked in to place an order and then waited for it. Also, order before 8pm. They close at 9pm, but one evening I came in at 8pm to place an order and when the lady took my ticket back to the cook he started yelling at her in Korean and taking stuff out of the fridge. I now know that kitchens start cleaning up an hour prior to closing, so I guess thats what happened. Anyway, the food is just to good to pass up. read more

Bottom Line: inexpensive, solid teriyaki with attentive service in a clean, bright space. Punch card alert! Buy 10 meals, get one free. To be clear, I rank things "like against like". For fast food, Happy Hana is nothing unusual but it's solid. It's inexpensive, has a decent variety, the kids like it and is totally reliable when you need a quick lunch. There's a lot to be said about that holy combo of cheap, consistent and clean! The owners here are friendly and smart. The lunch menu is almost entirely $6 combos and cover the usual territory, teriyaki with katsu, gyoza, yakisoba, etc. The portions are generous. Speaking of generous, if you're a pop freak like me - you'll appreciate the aggressive way Happy Hana refills your soda. Taste wise: The chicken is good, but I would stay away from the beef teriyaki - it had the look and texture of having been boiled. The egg rolls are your typical, cheap egg rolls. All the fried food is fine - the gyoza and katsu were good, the tempura suffered from over thick batter(but was on par with most teriyaki joints). My daughter loved the yakisoba (her "go to" meal at these types of joints). This place probably is a 4 star for me but since University Place has somehow managed to loose a lot of its "good" restaurant in the span of the last 10 years I'd hate to see another one close up! The lunch specials are a great deal @ $5.95 which consists of combo plate meal and a canned beverage of your choice. I had the Teriyaki Chicken and Mongolian Beef Combo and both were pretty tasty. The portions are just right and everything is super fresh!! I will recommend dining in because I've noticed food seems to taste better right out of the kitchen on a plate vs being put in a steamy togo box. What a dynamite little place in UP. We've tried an assortment of things, from the bento box to the teriyaki to the sushi. Everything has been surprisingly high quality. The chicken in the teriyaki is still not quite as good as Teriyaki Bowl in Queen Anne (my absolute favorite), but everything else was great. One over worked but friendly woman taking orders and providing table service. It can take a little bit longer to get food (or in our case, our boba) but she does a hell of a job for one person. They seriously need to hire someone else up front. Only bummer was that our bubble tea was under blended (large chunks of ice) and the tapioca had not quite thawed. This made for some pretty terrible textures, but the flavors were still decent. Highly recommend this place for lunch or a cheap dinner, probably wouldn't order another boba though! read more

Hana is now pretty much a mainstay of University Place, being one of the few stable non-chain restaurants in town at this time. They are a typical American-style Teriyaki shop, with a light sushi selection. Most everything they make is decent - we've pretty much had it all. The menu isn't adventuresome, exotic, or in any way different than most such places - but at least everything they serve has a certain predictable quality to it. All of the lunch specials come with an egg-flower soup that's a little different but pretty tasty. They offer a wide range of the lunch combos as well, all of them including their signature chicken teriyaki. A few of the lunch offerings can be hit or miss - such as the Mongolian Beef + Chicken Teriyaki combo - the quality of the beef varies quite a lot it seems. The dining area is very small and can get crowded, and in the winter, with a North-facing door, can be very cold as people come and go. But most of the time, the table service is very nice - almost too much table service, with your server frequently returning to see how everything is - so you won't lack for attention.... except for the times when it all inexplicably falls apart and no one comes around. We've never figured out a pattern - they can go from over-the-top almost annoying table service, to having to go up to the counter to ask for something. They've done away with their "buy 10 lunch specials, get one free" and no longer offer a soda with lunch specials but that's just the way it goes. But they still have their "Hana Platters" - huge portions of food, family style - we used to buy them when the kids were at home and considered them a very good value. We will keep coming back - sure, there are much better teriyaki places around, but we live very close by and Hana is very conveniently located so we do eat here fairly often. Dave read more

Happy Hanna is located in University Place, in the same plaza as Albertsons, by the BECU. There were several things that struck me about this place. 1) They offer chicken breast options. 2) In actuality, this teriyaki place is Asian fusion. They have standard Teriyaki items, but also offers general tao's, Kung pao, and sesame chicken. And they also have bulgogi and kimchi. It's not bad, and not better than average. I would say this place is now my quick go-to lunch spot, when I'm at work. They are super quick and full of flavor for a teriyaki shop. Their portions are decently sized and their lunch specials are reasonably priced as well. Early today I called in for a pick up order, called for 5 entrees and the lady said it'll be ready in 10mins. I got there within 10mins (being so close to my work), she was literally packing my order, wow, talk about fast food. Don't bother calling to place your order, they don't let you talk they cut you off and don't let you finish your sentence or question multiple times then hang up on you. Half the damn time i don't even know if they heard me or just making whatever they want!!! Then when you go pick up your good IT'S WRONG, GO FIGURE!! I ordered us both Yakisoba, with chicken for me and combo for him.The lady that took our order was awesome! They got the food out quickly. At home we opened the container to see spaghetti noodles instead of Yakisoba noodles. YUK! This would have been a great meal, had they not used the wrong noodles. I love this place! Great food and always happy with me on the phone. I usually get the Bento 2 and gives me a bit of everything. The salad dressing is awesome and I love the California Rolls! In my opinion Tacoma is a great city but most of the restaurants lack in taste and effort. Happy Hana's an exception with tasty food.
